State Ship Series: USS Alaska
There have been one ships commissioned named after the state of Alaska in the US Navy. The state of Alaska was admitted into the United States on January 3, 1959.
USS Alaska (SSBN-732), Ohio Class, nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine, in commission from 1986 to present.
There has been three ships named after the territory of Alaska in the US Navy.
USS Alaska (1868), sloop-of-war, in commission from 1868 to 1883.
USS Alaska (ID-3035), minesweeper, commissioned from 1918 to 1919. She was a steam-powered commercial fishing trawler that was chartered by the US Navy patrol for U-boats during World War I and kept her civilian name.
USS Alaska (CB-1), Alaska Class, Large Cruiser, in commission from 1944 to 1947. She provided AA coverage to the carriers. Scrapped in 1959. Awarded 3 battle stars during WWII.
