Look, I'm sorry, there's nothing to learn from this post, this is just me complaining about a lack of legibility and expertise available to the amateur.
I wish that international trade data were easier to make sense of. Sometimes you can go to the larger industry groups and get a PDF that breaks down what's moving where and why, but other times the data seems sparse on the ground, or it's just not public-facing, so I'm left with these statistics that don't actually tell me much.
I was looking up potato imports and exports, to win an argument online (of course), and found this in the list of largest import flows:
Imports to Canada from USA (1.52% of the world imports, $92 million according to external trade statistics of Canada)
Imports to USA from Canada (7.4% of the world imports, $447 million according to external trade statistics of USA)
So of the top 10 largest import flows for "potatoes, fresh or chilled", two of those spots are ... USA and Canada sending potatoes back and forth across the border?
Obviously there's got to be some kind of reason for this. The United States and Canada have a long border with each other, so maybe, in spite of friction crossing the border, it actually does make sense for certain parts of the United States to trade their potatoes to Canada, and in other places, for Canada to trade their potatoes to the United States.
Or possibly these are different types of potatoes, with certain kinds suited to growing in Canada and other kinds suited the growing in the United States, and those are what's getting traded across borders.
Or maybe it's the growing season, which is different between the two countries, so that it's a seasonality thing, and the flow of imports depends on the month, which would make sense.
Or the border simply does not provide all that much friction, and so we should expect that they just trade back and forth, because this is as meaningless as trade across arbitrary points within a singular country.
The data seems very scant though, and frustratingly, I feel like there's a potato farmer who just has this information at their fingertips. I am not averse to emailing random farms in Idaho, but I'll exhaust some other avenues first.
Like asking tumblr!
Are you a potato farmer, or do you know one? Can you make sense of the intra-industry trade thing for me with some specific examples of what's going on?

Somebody other than me cares!
For only the second time in the last decade or more, my personal obsession is in the news and I'm incredibly excited. "Below the fold," in old newspaper jargon, but at least somebody's trying to do something and some newspapers noticed. When you're as starved for validation as I am, it only takes that much attention to excite me.
Tumblr media
Amudalat Ajasa and Carolyn Van Houten, "Lead paint upended this boy’s life. Now the EPA is trying to eliminate the threat. The Environmental Protection Agency is about to issue strict limits on lead dust, which poses a threat to millions of children across the United States," Washington Post. Oct 19, 2024 (non-paywall link)
Lead was used as a paint additive from Victorian times up until the late 1970s for a couple of reasons. It made a bright white pigment that didn't fade quickly, it was shiny, and most importantly to the Victorians, it tolerated harsh cleaning chemicals well, which they thought was important to reducing the spread of disease.
(On a local note for here in St. Louis MO USA, it also almost single-handedly propped up the local economy in this town for that whole century, thanks to the huge lead mines south of town and our ability to export products to the whole world via our port on the Mississippi river. Almost all of the abandoned factory and warehouse buildings down here in South St. Louis are contaminated former lead-paint businesses.)
Lead paint though has an even bigger problem than lead pipes, though: over time, it starts shedding lead dust, and children are incredibly vulnerable to lead dust, breathing it in and/or swallowing it. And it takes very little lead dust to permanently damage a growing mind, destroying the parts of the brain that control impulses and the ones that down-regulate emotions.
This is why lead paint was outlawed in the late 1970s. But there was no law requiring it to be removed from (frankly, nearly all) surfaces. Instead, there was a voluntary lead abatement program, and even it only applied to residential property. Homeowners and apartment owners could borrow money from the nearest S&L, pay contractors to rip out and replace all the lead-dust tainted windows, carpets, plaster walls, and so forth and replace them with clean new vinyl-clad or latex-painted bits. They could then submit the receipts with their taxes and get a 100% refundable tax credit.
But they weren't able to make it mandatory because of intense lobbying by openly-racist slumlords, who didn't want to lead abate their properties even it was free because that's telling them what to do with their property, who didn't think their black tenants "deserved" refurbished apartments. That's also why it's illegal to disclose, in sales or in rental contracts, that your property has been through lead abatement; doing so is "unfair" to those '70s slumlords.
And besides, Reagan canceled the whole program halfway though his first term. To bend over backwards to be fair to Reagan, they weren't still getting many applications; everybody who was going to do so voluntarily already had. (Free money for home improvements has that effect.)
About a decade ago, a Reuters reporter used FOIA to demand state health departments turn over their records on childhood lead testing. Almost half of them don't keep any. Most only track it at the state level or maybe county level. Missouri's one of the only states that tracks it to the census-tract level, tracks where kids who are lead poisoned live to within a couple of blocks. And the map of apartments that didn't go through lead abatement, here in Missouri, perfectly maps onto the homicide data.
As someone who was pretty badly lead poisoned as a teenager myself, and as someone who's spent most of his life living in or near lead-poisoned apartments, I'm obsessed with this and ever since the Reuters article came out I've been begging every politician or candidate I interact with to bring back the late '70s lead abatement tax credit and this time make it mandatory to test before selling or leasing a home. Even when St. Louis, with its nominally, mostly progressive mayor got huge uncommitted funds dumped on her, from ARPA and from the Rams-relocation-fraud settlement, I couldn't get any politician to care about this. Their constituents weren't demanding it, so it couldn't be done.
The Washington Post reported, today, that the US Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a rule to do just that. No tax credit provision, so they're being fought tooth and nail by people who don't want to make property sellers and landlords pay for it out of pocket, but the proposed rule is on the docket, potentially to take effect mid next year. Somebody other than me noticed. Somebody other than me cares.
If you are like the average person (to my distress) the main thing you want to know is "what can I do to protect myself or my kids?"
This is a shitty way to think because let me tell you, if your kid grows up on the same block as a lead-poisoned kid, your kid is going to grow up with C-PTSD from the resulting violence. Your kids aren't safe until everybody's kids are safe.
I didn't convince you? You've given up on keeping everybody else's kids safe, too?
If you have a painted surface anywhere on your property that existed prior to 1976, you should assume that there is lead paint on it. Older chain-link fences almost certainly. Wooden single-pane windows, 100% likely. If you have plaster, instead of drywall, interior walls in your house, then neither the walls nor the floorboards nor the carpets are safe. They will tell you these surfaces can be rendered safe by painting over them with latex paint; anybody who tells you this is whistling past the graveyard.
Do not have or raise kids in a house or apartment like that. Either abate the lead or move. Yes, even if it's more expensive; the alternative is to raise a child who may never work and has a high likelihood of spending most of their life in and out of jail.
If it's too late for that, and your child is already lead poisoned, don't give up hope entirely, but understand that the interventions that show promise for such kids are hard to find and aren't 100% reliable.
The most important thing you can do is investigate the concept of "trauma-informed schools," and demand, as part of your child's IEP, that his teacher and any associated staff get trauma-informed schooling trained. (Your kid will not be the only one who benefits.)
Children with profoundly impaired impulse control and/or profoundly impaired emotional down-regulation skills can be taught to do better, but that requires that they be given the extra time it will take them to do so, and the privacy, and the calm quiet space, especially when they're very young and just learning. Their brains don't do this naturally, so they don't do them quickly; hold them to the same standard of behavior as everybody else but until they spend a decade or more practicing and grow up more, after you remind them, give them enough time to obey.
But believe me when I tell you this: lead abatement and behavioral education are cheaper and better than prison.

The trucking industry is one of the most regulated in the U.S. and Canada, which means compliance is always a top concern for transportation industries. This is especially true when it comes to cross-border freight. These days, border officials rely on digital documents to make the customs process smoother. Having the right software can make this process easy and reduce the risk of errors. Here are a few ways AVAAL eManifest software can make border crossing easy for your business.
Compliance Made Simple
To run a successful trucking business, compliance always needs to be a top priority. Not following the required customs process or accurately filling out documentation can result in lost time, reduced profits, and even legal consequences. Both Canada and the U.S. require carriers to submit their eManifests one hour prior and send their paperwork to customs brokers two hours prior to a driver’s arrival at the border. With AVAAL’s eManifest software, submitting this has never been easier. Our software is tailor-made to meet all the requirements so that you can cross the border without any hassles and be confident that you’re complying with all regulations.
Easy to Use Platform
Both the U.S. and Canada currently offer their own free eManifest portal. Unfortunately, these are difficult to use and not designed to support carriers that regularly cross the border. These platforms also don’t share data between ACE and ACI, creating issues for cross-border trucking companies. AVAAL eManifest is easy to use and reliable. It’s web-based software, meaning you can submit your manifests at any time and from anywhere. Our software also comes with 24/7 support, so we will be available to help you if any issues arise.
Tailored to Your Business' Needs
Not all trucking companies have the same needs, even when it comes to border-crossing. One thing that sets our eManifest software apart from others is that it can be tailor-fit to meet your company’s needs. Whether you’re a single operator or a multi-national company, we offer the greatest level of flexibility and have an eManifest plan to suit your requirements. We have a team of experts on hand ready to help you with all your businesses’ needs.
PAPS and PARS: How to Speed Up Your Cross-Border Shipments
PAPS (Pre-Arrival Processing System) and PARS (Pre-Arrival Review System) are essential components in cross-border trade between Canada and the United States. Let’s explore what they are and how they facilitate the movement of commercial goods across the Canadian and U.S. borders:
PARS (Pre-Arrival Review System):
Designation: PARS is used by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) to clear commercial goods through customs.
Functionality: It involves bar code labels placed on commercial invoices. CBSA agents scan these labels to determine whether goods need immediate release or further inspection.
Integration: PARS works with the ACI (Advance Commercial Information) electronic manifest system in Canada.
PAPS (Pre-Arrival Processing System):
Designation: PAPS is the U.S. counterpart of PARS.
Functionality: Similar to PARS, it allows U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to process goods as they cross the border.
Integration: PAPS operates within the ACE (Automated Commercial Environment) electronic manifest system in the United States.
Similarities and Differences:
Both PARS and PAPS serve the same purpose: facilitating the movement of goods.
The main difference lies in their geographical scope: PARS for Canada, PAPS for the USA.
Having similar systems streamlines importing and exporting between the two countries.
When Do You Need PARS or PAPS Numbers?
Any commercial shipments entering Canada or the U.S. by truck use PARS or PAPS numbers as the default shipping type.
The PARS/PAPS process involves carriers, shippers, and customs brokers working together to ensure smooth border crossings.
Here’s how it works:
A carrier assigns a PARS or PAPS number to a shipment.
The customs broker uses this number to request the release of the shipment from customs.
The carrier prepares an eManifest listing using ACI (Canada) or ACE (U.S.), referencing the PARS or PAPS number.
Only when both the broker’s entry and the carrier’s eManifest listing are accepted can the goods proceed to the border.
Customs officers verify the PARS or PAPS number to release the goods or refer them for inspection.
In summary, PARS and PAPS play a crucial role in expediting cross-border trade, ensuring compliance, and enhancing efficiency for carriers and importers.

Digital Media : Sources & Significance
Critical Analysis
H.. Desamsetti & K. Lal(2019) , “Being a Realistic Master: Creating Props & Environments Design for AAA Games”, Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics, Vol. 6 No.2
Introduction
The data I've chosen to analyze is an article on Being a Realistic Master: Creating Props & Environments Design for AAA Games, which is written by Harshith Desamsetti & Karu Lal from Asian Journal of Applied Linguistics (volume 6, No 2). H. Desamsetti is the Senior Software Engineer at Charter Communications in USA and K. Lal is the Integration Engineer at Ohio National Services in USA. Both authors have unique perspectives about this topic and have solid authorities in their fields.
The overall article talks about the process of creation and realistic environments for AAA video focusing on the techniques, limits and strategies involved in creating visually stunning and authentic environments. The authors states that “the games come to life because of a well-designed environment, which provides additional layers of depth, context and emotional effect to the narrative. And here, I’ve chosen pages 195-196. In these pages the authors have been discussed as two main topics, ‘Role of An Environment Artist’ & ‘Environment Design from Scratch’.
Role of  An Environment Artist
The duties and responsibilities of an environment artist can be discussed as two, ‘making the world & Teamwork’.
In the creation of game world the main duty of an environment artist is to create a realistic world which includes a variety of tasks such as designing the layout, creation of layout elements and props, and handling overall elegance. The size of the project (small independent game or AAA development) has a big impact on the artist’s performance. In small-scale manufacturing, the environmental designer may own a large portion of the pipeline, handling various activities from dressing & these impacts in scale effect. In the independent game development design to final product. AAA games can have a focus on specific elements like set decorating , the artist can be involved in the process of designing, blocking and creating the last form of props and structural parts. The process can vary greatly in AAA productions, with concept art providing the settings and level artists handling the blocking. Decorating the set, the addition of various elements to the environment for the quality of being real is the key point in both cases.
Working as an environmental artist play an important role in collaborations with other departments which includes working with level designers, art directors, concept artists, prop artists and animation directors to turn blackout designs into suitable form of levels, it is the result of Teamwork. These highlight’s the varied and dynamic roles of environmental designers, emphasizing flexibility depending on the scope of the project. Designer responsibilities range from world building to highly collaborative teams, reflecting their role on tangible aspects of the video game environment.
There are some departments that environmental designers often collaborate with to create a cohesive and immersive gaming experience.
Level Design: Responsible for playing the initial block at game level. Blockout collaborates with environmental designers to transform a beautiful and playful environment.
Prop Art: Creates props and additional content, including textures. He coordinates the export of props, which contribute to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the theater.
Animation: They keeps the spirit or order in the environment alive. The animation seamlessly integrates with the game world and collaborates with environmental designers.
Game Design: They focus on the overall design of the game. He works with environmental artists to showcase game elements such as weapon availability, player abilities, and other interactive elements.
Concept Art: Through conceptual art, he generates ideas and plans for the environment. Concept designers provide visual feedback and inspiration in the development of game worlds.
Art Guidelines: Collaborates closely with concept designers and other department members to ensure visual cohesion throughout the game. Art directors play an important role in shaping the overall artistic vision.
Technical Art: It ensures that the game works properly on different hardware platforms. Creates tools and products for environmental designers and other departments to increase operational efficiency and solve technical challenges.
Marketing: The one who is responsible for promoting the game. Although not directly involved in the making of sporting assets, the marketing department plays an important role in exposing the work of environmental designers to a wider audience.
Environmental Design from Scratch
The process of designing environment begins with brainstorming. ‘Google’ and ‘Pinterest’ can be used to collect a variety of visual references. That might be photographs, film, and conceptual art of people and ideas. The artist intentionally looks only for references that may be loosely related to the main concept. This’ll helps in creating unique and innovative ideas by drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources. A selection of screenshots and references have been compiled into a mood board. It acts as a visual collage encapsulating the aesthetic, style and desired perspective of the project. Artists then proceed to rapidly create images based on the collected references. These diagrams are a preliminary analysis of ideas and help visualize the overall layout. Depending on the needs of a project, artists can create a set of drawings or detailed utility drawings. This phase involves refining the baseline image to produce a more realistic representation of the suspected objects.
Artists use sketching as a problem-solving tool if there are already elements in the layer that need to be fixed due to artistic connection or technical limitations. These images were created with the specific purpose of finding answers to design challenges. The methodology described goes beyond the traditional steps of brainstorming, gathering reference data, gathering reference data, and creating a sensitivity score. Instead, the team immediately starts simulating the environment in the game engine. The team may work with little or no feedback, or they may only work in group sections selected by art direction. This simplified process shows a spontaneous and immediate way of translating concepts into the game environment. Sketching is sometimes used as a tool to find solutions for existing features in a layer. This includes addressing artistic confidence in a particular game universe, such as “for the sake of honor” or overcoming technical limitations imposed by level design. After creating a design on the engine, the team seeks approval, obtains it and proceeds to remove the asset. This includes ensuring appropriate calculations and making enough adjustments based on feedback from the art director. The modeling is then outlined, and high-quality renderings of the elements are created using tools such as ‘ZBrush or 3ds Max’. Then Unwrapping (UV mapping) occurs during or after the modeling process. The group continues to go first with materials, textures and lighting.
The team’s responsibility at Ubisoft focuses on modeling and level art. The team works independently across projects, and the workflow is more organic. Once the team is satisfied with the results, they move on to polishing the lighting, followed by polishing materials and designs to achieve the desired effect.
Conclusion
In overall, the authors discuss about the artist’s duties range from world creation to extensive collaboration across departments, demonstrating the significant roles they play in shaping the visual aspects of video game environments. While the environment artists work collaborates with several elements, such as level designing, animations and the overall artistic direction in the process of game creation. A graphic approach to problem solving and integrating different roles within the team implies a dynamic and iterative process in environment design.

Valsartan Prices Trend | Pricing | News | Database | Chart
Tumblr media
North America
In Q3 2024, the North American Valsartan market displayed a fluctuating trajectory, with prices initially rising before declining later in the quarter. In July, prices increased due to several key factors. Improved consumer confidence in business conditions bolstered a positive market outlook, which supported higher Valsartan prices. Additionally, supply chain disruptions stemming from blank sailings and rerouted ships around the Cape of Good Hope (COGH)—a result of severe port congestion in both Asia and North America—further contributed to the price hike.
By August and September, however, the market saw a notable shift as demand dropped at the fastest rate in recent months. To address this decline, many market participants reduced prices to stimulate sales, accelerating the downward trend. This movement was further influenced by a significant decline in inflation, primarily driven by lower energy costs, which reduced business overheads and enabled companies to pass on cost savings to consumers.
The USA witnessed the most pronounced price fluctuations in the region. By the end of Q3, the price of Valsartan (USP, FDA) CFR New York had settled at USD 84,780 per metric ton, underscoring the substantial market dynamics that shaped the quarter.

Asia Pacific
Valsartan pricing in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region experienced a similar pattern of initial increases followed by significant declines in Q3 2024. Early in the quarter, robust global demand drove prices higher. Strong export activities from Asia to key markets in North America and Europe played a central role, as foreign importers placed larger orders to preempt potential supply shortages. This proactive ordering further boosted prices.
However, by August and September, prices began to decline notably due to weakening demand. This decline was marked by slower export growth and falling prices, reflecting a broader economic slowdown across the region. Adding to the pressure were anti-dumping measures implemented by major markets, including the USA, Europe, and India, which reduced overall demand for Valsartan. By the end of the quarter, Valsartan was priced at USD 83,000 per metric ton FOB Zhenjiang, China, highlighting the challenges posed by regulatory actions and shifting market dynamics.
Europe
The European Valsartan market in Q3 2024 exhibited mixed trends, with Germany standing out as the most affected region. Prices rose in July, supported by positive consumer sentiment, increased purchasing activity, and peak seasonal demand. This period also faced ongoing capacity constraints and logistical challenges, particularly due to congestion in the Red Sea region, which drove up shipping costs and spot rates.
However, the upward momentum reversed in August and September as several factors exerted downward pressure on prices. Weakening consumer sentiment and reduced domestic demand for pharmaceuticals, including Valsartan, weighed on the market. Additionally, a decline in inflation, lower energy prices, and favorable base effects alleviated cost pressures, enabling suppliers to reduce prices for imported Valsartan.
By the end of Q3, the price of Valsartan in Germany had settled at USD 85,000 per metric ton CFR Hamburg, reflecting the complex interplay of economic conditions, logistical challenges, and regulatory influences shaping the market.
