First of all Excellent fiction!
Second, I always interpreted elves as having a similar range of intellectual capabilities as humans, just developing and aging biologically more slowly.
Yes, the elf might be *small* for longer, or just her growth never comes in growth spurts, just slow and steady from babyhood to full size at end-of-puberty whatever that means.
Humans have puberty (and a whole dump of hormones and emotions to go with it) either 8-12 or 12-16 depending on who you ask, and the definition of puberty, and possibly partly depending on race and gender.
We start getting an ability to 'reason abstractly' called things like 'algebra readiness' or several other things depending on which child-development expert you're reading. This starts around age 10 to 12 and developing over several years, partly naturally and party depending on practice.
Human children in a relatively habitable and fertile environment (in a world where the lore-required-to-survive-and-thrive doesn't take 15 years to impart) are perfectly capable of gathering enough food to survive from about age 7. And strong enough to also help with home building / home furnishing / animal husbandry from mid puberty or whatever.
(Child labor isn't horrible because 'children shouldn't work' but because a: 'no one should be exploited without their consent,' and we have to put an age of reason/age of consent/age of financial responsibility cut off somewhere. and b: in our technologically advanced civilization we've settled on a standard of generalized knowledge and a schedule to deliver it based on about 15 years (from age ~5 to ~20) and consider this a better investment on average than whatever financial reward the average child might earn before that / instead. In other words, the value of education has been deemed greater than the opportunity cost of whatever employment could have otherwise been found for them.)
Now then, lets look at elves. If we're multiplying everything by the ratio of 16->100 or to make things simpler math lets do 20->100, not because I don't think 16 isn't where coming-of-age would be for humans in a faux-medieval setting, but because I think that elf coming of age would be more like what we mean about age 21.
(Also because a ratio of 1:5 is a lot simpler to talk about, but feel free to adjust everything I say back to the 4:25 ratio if you like that better.)
Our elf and human still meet as toddlers. Being equally smart, they learn enough discipline to be allowed to attend school within a year of each other. (if their village offers school) by 7 to 9 they both have learned enough reading, 'riting, & 'rithmetic to qualify for an apprenticeship.
They hang out together after work. They both are very into mocking the nearby adults and their figurative language taken literally, they think this is the height of humor.
Somehow between 10 and 12, this stops being quite as funny to the human, as he gains proficiency with abstract reasoning & analogies and starts putting on the inches. While his elf friend still grows as imperceptibly as she used to, and continues to be as amazing as ever at memorizing poetry, and packing away all the verbatim knowledge she can get her hands, ears, or eyes on.
He starts writing songs for her. She learns every one, even if she doesn't really understand some of the more subtle similes.
At 14 he starts noticing girls, and by 16 he's chasing them, and thinking about qualifying for his journeyman to get a bit more freedom, and be a bit more attractive to potential mates.
She thinks he's taking an unjustifiably silly economic risk, her skills are plenty sought after, and she's taking a market-appropriate amount of pay home to her mother and saving to buy a fancy geography book.
By 18 he's registered at the guild as a journeyman, and has purchased or made his set of tools.
She's made a set of tools also, mostly because of his inspiration, she's still working for the same Master, but she's starting to take commissions because her work is recognized by the customers. They might take a bit longer to get their point across because they aren't anywhere near literal enough for her liking, but they also trust her not to cheat them, because they know it wouldn't cross her cute little mind.
Then again, maybe instead the way she was inspired to copy him was having a romantic fling, her 'partner' finds her stochastic and very hard to read. She's plenty smart enough to solve all the problems involved, she just isn't interpreting any of the same experiences through the same emotional depth.
But probably she just thinks she's wise enough to see all the pitfalls involved and thinks better of it, she has better uses for her time than investing all her time in a single friendship of dubious value, she sees no reason to invest that much time in getting her heart broken, or in setting herself up for someone else blaming her for breaking their heart, or whatever. She starts a geography club, herbology club, or something. More books, and interesting conversation partners.
Being a Journeyman is hard, the second illustrated volume of dragon slayers and their tactics can wait, she invests in her friend's business. Keeps him afloat through a couple of bad seasons. Eventually the investment pays off, and she finds other interesting places to put her money, supporting her library habit off her investment income instead. Not everything pays off, but enough things do. At any rate she's bought some good will. And she's just cynical enough that she's starting to lose her reputation as a soft touch.
At 28 he has started a family. She has discovered analogy. All those songs he wrote two decades ago are so much more funny or deep or interesting. So is most everything else she's memorized in the last 24 years. (Did you realize that those ridiculous Zeno song covers that Archimedes and the Parabolas re-released are actually about calculus) Now she knows calculus. And accounting.
She still copies maps for fun, but now she knows how to navigate by the stars, because there's a song about that which she memorized 20 years ago, because it was in the back of her book about dolphins. (or if there are no affordable books in this universe, because she heard a visiting bard sing about dolphins, and mermaids, and the perils of piloting while drunk.)
At 40 he's secured apprenticeships for all his children, maybe one or two of them in the same shop she works at. She's starting to notice men. (Not that she would ever make a fool of herself by chasing any, but she notices.) Especially the bards, and the wizards, the book sellers, and the people who buy her swords.
She teaches her fellow apprentice the songs that their father wrote, and other songs she's found useful. She laughs along when the girl mocks her father to her, and her to her father. He's good with his kids, and it reminds her of when they were both that size.
But he's starting to grey. It's starting to be obvious how rich and famous he is.
She's rich too, but it's invested all over town, and some of it with merchants on both roads, and some of it in ships. Rather than in her own shop, she's been told a dozen times that half her commissions would qualify her for journeyman if she'd just present one of them to the guild. She doesn't care, she is content with her work and her hobbies. She's writing poetry now, to help the youngins learn their skills.
A special commission comes in, the customer asks to see samples of everyone's work before he chooses which crafts(person/people) he wants working on his project. The customer likes her work best, she does the job.
It is a very very challenging project. Her boss watches her like a hawk, saying even less than usual. She fears jealousy might get the better of him this time. Or any of her other co-workers. But she's not prepared when someone outright steals it the night she finishes it. There is no time to start again.
She goes to her friend's house and gets monstrously drunk, he and his wife help her write a terrible song about workplace honesty and calling down curses on co-workers and bosses that steal your commissions and otherwise make one look bad in front of customers.
Someone comes from town to tell them something, (probably to keep their voices down), they aren't exactly up to opening the door and facing whatever violence their late night caller might have in store, so they don't open the door. Instead they go clumsily to bed.
She wakes up sandwiched between her human friend and his wife. She really shouldn't get so drunk as to need that much taking care of, but then she really shouldn't let her emotions get away from her like that, that was an unconscionable imposition also. And on the third hand, there might be much more to this 'comfort of a bedfellow' thing than she realized.
She returns dejectedly to the workshop, only to find the commissioned piece right where she left it. (Was she mistaken last night, looking on the wrong shelf, or seeing things in her stress to get everything finished?)
Either way, The customer arrives and she sells the thing.
The pay is enough to retire. As she contemplates how to invest it, she realizes that she could have *already* retired if she'd wanted to.
Well that's interesting.
She tries to decide whether to tell her mother or her friend first, she opts for her friend.
Her friends stare at her like she's gone mad.
The thing is she's not mad now, it was last night that she was out of her mind. He doesn't believe it. He investigates.
Her boss did steal it, temporarily. To present to the guild for her Mastery.
So now she has a Mastery, she never asked for, and twice enough to retire. And emotional turmoil that she cannot fathom.
Fathom.
Hmmm.
Maybe a trip to the sea? Aren't the Dolphins playing in Rumsport?
Her friend and his wife think travelling is an excellent idea. The music is good, the dancing is good, (the Dolphins will sing Zeno's ridiculous paradoxes for a little coin,) they're going to Clamharbor next and boat fares are cheap.
So at 55 they all go off on a mid-life crisis/adventure together, while the elf is ALSO GOING THROUGH PUBERTY, and can't keep her hands off the musicians, or the booze.
By the time the reach Clamharbor, she's forgotten more songs than she's ever written. Spent slightly more money than she really should have, and has a crush on an elf bard/smith she's never met (except in his songs), that she might could learn something from. (Or teach something to?) So they go haring off across the continent to find 'her' man.
Her humans think that she's lost her mind, but deep down they know that they were just as pathetic at 15, but at the time they didn't have the leverage of ready coin to get themselves halfway around the world chasing an impossible dream.
If she was at home, her mother hopefully could be talking sense into her, but she's not ... and in her experience she's always been the sensible one, so she's intermittently convinced that she's still the sensible one, it's a once in a lifetime experience to hear tell of someone as much better than you as this bard seems to be from his descriptions of his techniques.
But the bard turns out to be her father's elder brother, and romance is completely off the table. (Also he's 300 and she's 57 and would she please go away.)
So she ditches her friends and joins several different monasteries and a sex cult, each of which likes her money, and her passion, and doesn't like her teenage rebelliousness and ability to pick apart their dogmas with calculus.
Eventually she turns her steps towards home with an apprentice or two she picked up along the way somehow. One of whom might be into her, but he doesn't believe in star-chart math and hasn't memorized a map ever, and is just generally really annoying and twice as rebellious as she is. So that's needlessly dramatic.
And then she gets it. This is how her human friend acted when he was 13/14 and thinking with his emotions rather than with his logic and ethics and common sense. And if she's going to not get herself killed in some ridiculous way ( que: 1000 dumb ways to die.mp3 ), she's going to have to learn some form of meditation to get any thinking done in a brain currently soaking up hormones as fast as her blood can bring them there.
So.
Meditation is a thing, there are songs about that. She even knows half of them. She's done it before even (maybe?), but there's a difference between piloting a boat on the calm lake that her mind used to be, and on the rough sea that it is now. There's a difference between navigating a wagon on a flat plain, and pushing it uphill in a narrow crevasse.
So meditation is hard now, but the discipline to use it properly is even harder. Eventually, she manages. Eventually, she also gets home in one piece. She's 80 and an accomplished bard. But what she's currently most interested in is perfecting the art of making those short blades that sailors prefer for things, they need to be strong in a different set of directions, stay sharp of course, and is it possible to rust-proof them somehow, even against salt water?
She's 90 and starting her 3rd career, Her human friend is very very old, his wife will probably survive him, but probably not by very much.
Adult elves are starting to look at her like she's no longer too passionate for her own good, so she's probably doing the meditation thing correctly?
Wait a minute if elves take a hundred years to grow up that has some weird implications.
So… if we say a human comes of age in fantasy worlds at 16, that means it takes an elf 6.25 years to age one human year. If we say the age of maturity is 18 that’s 5.55 years.
So then… okay with people that live a long time have to see their human friends die and probably see them like pets yeah that’s been explored to death. But what about a human just seeing their friend not grow up?
An elf toddler and a human toddler become friends at a playdate. At the time the human is two and the elf is 13. Emotionally the elf is just a little older than the human. But then the human grows up. He grows up and as he grows up his friend doesn’t. Not much, anyways.
She’s still sucking her thumb and throwing tantrums the entire time that he grows up. When he reaches the age where he’d choose a trade or go to an academy he’s earning extra money by babysitting her. During his initiation into adulthood on his 18th birthday she’s there with her parents holding a stuffed animal. Later that afternoon he sees her being shown some colorful flashcards with letters of the elvish alphabet on it by her father.
The human gets older. He learns how to fight, he goes from town to town getting work. At some point he joins the army. Every time he visits his hometown he has at least one more scar and by the time he’s 30 and the elf girl is mentally seven by human standards she starts to understand that something is wrong. Even after he settles down to be a home maker for the local blacksmith something feels wrong.
And she watches him grow old. When she’s in her 80s she babysits his grandchildren for extra cash after school, coming over in her school robes and ruffling his hair. She doesn’t remember why she became friends with this human or when but a strange sense of jealousy fills her heart.
Now she realizes it. She realizes it too late, on the day her friend learns that he is dying. The first day of her 100th year and the start of his last. Humans’ lifetimes may only last for the childhood of an elf if they’re lucky, but they learn so fast. They do so much. They cram their days full of love and hate and learning and wonder.
He knew this was coming. He knew all of this decades before she did, because elves are slow. Not stupid, certainly not stupid, but very very slow. She holds her old friend’s hand as he lays down on his bed. A man that has led such an ordinary life but feels so extraordinary to her. Because he has always, always been there and now he just won’t. Because in her eyes he became so wise so fast and now he’s just gonna be gone.
On an elf’s 100th birthday they are allowed to choose a new name for themselves. It can be important, or not. Usually it will follow them until the end of time. She stands in front of her family’s elders and is asked what name she will be called from now on.
She names herself after him.
