Undiagnosed Cerebellar Dysfunction and Recovering Chronic Vestibulopathy

 Abstract

About 30% of adults suffer from some mild to severe vestibular dysfunction. Vestibular disorders can be expressed as an Acute Vestibular Syndrome (AVS), episodic vestibular syndrome. Only half of the sufferers can compensate for their dysfunction after three months after the onset, while the other half of them become chronic, the mechanisms behind this compensation remain unclear. Several behavioural studies have explored the role of the vestibulo-ocular reflex and saccades in the process, linking to the interaction between the superior colliculus and the cerebellum. Yet, despite cerebellar involvement in vestibular function and oculomotor adaptation, thus far, no studies have focused on the specific role of the cerebellum in the compensation process in vestibular dysfunction. In this study, we test the hypothesis that undiagnosed cerebellar dysfunction might hinder chronic vestibulopathy sufferers from compensating and recovering. We recruited 19 patients who had suffered from an acute peripheral vestibular syndrome (10 clinically recovered and 9 with chronic symptoms) and ten individuals with no history of vestibular alterations (controls). We assessed their implicit motor learning capacity with a visuomotor rotation task and measured by the angular aiming error, which showed an impaired implicit motor adaptation in chronic patients (7.04±1.6º) compared to recovered (11.06±1.94º, p=0.007) and control groups (10.89±7.96º, p=0.03). These findings indicate the involvement of the cerebellum in vestibular compensation and suggest that implicit motor adaptation of reaching movements could be potentially used as an early prognostic tool in Unilateral Peripheral Vestibular Dysfunction (UPVD) patients.

Sedatu y SSPC promueven la prevención de violencia y delitos contra mujeres en el espacio público

La Secretaría de Desarrollo Agrario, Territorial y Urbano (Sedatu) y la Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) firmaron un convenio de colaboración para prevenir el delito y las violencias de género contra las mujeres en el espacio público.

Román Meyer Falcón, titular de la Sedatu, señaló que es un tema de seguridad nacional tener ordenado el territorio e informó que de acuerdo a una primera encuesta realizada en los alrededores de los espacios públicos construidos por el Programa de Mejoramiento Urbano (PMU), 87% de la población considera que ha mejorado la seguridad para mujeres y niñas.

“En la Sedatu tenemos acciones puntuales en línea con la agenda de género, sobre todo por reducir la violencia contra las mujeres. Desde el 2019 nos hemos dado a la tarea de atender las regiones que han sido olvidadas por los gobiernos anteriores. El PMU no sólo atiende el espacio público, también el rezago de vivienda, tenencia de suelo y actualiza los programas de desarrollo y ordenamiento”, explicó durante el encuentro protocolario.

En su turno, la secretaria de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana, Rosa Icela Rodríguez felicitó al titular de Sedatu por el trabajo realizado, pues se nota lo que ahora se hace, sobre todo en la recuperación de viviendas y espacios públicos en colonias marginadas.

Recordó que la violencia disminuye cuando se recuperan los espacios públicos y de ahí la importancia de que las secretarías caminen juntas y trabajen en paralelo.

“Ahí en donde nos encontramos; es ahí donde nos coordinamos y pues también en el pensamiento del presidente de México; en decir, que si no hay una coordinación entre las autoridades, pues no habrá una pacificación del país. No hay un futuro para que se pare la violencia si no trabajamos de manera coordinada”, enfatizó.

Con la firma de este convenio ambas dependencias colaborarán en el desarrollo del proyecto piloto “Territorio de paz, caminemos unidas”, a través del que se formularán estrategias para inhibir las violencias de género, especialmente para prevenir el delito de feminicidio y fomentar condiciones de seguridad para mujeres, niñas, niños y adolescentes.

El documento refiere que ambas dependencias contribuirán en el desarrollo e implementación de ferias de paz y desarme voluntario como acciones conjuntas que prevengan conductas violentas y delictivas a través de cursos, talleres de sensibilización, entre otras actividades.

Como parte de este convenio y de forma simultánea, ya se realiza una jornada de mujeres y niñas en el territorio en Tijuana, Baja California, en donde se están llevando a cabo talleres de prevención de la violencia de género, empoderamiento de las mujeres, derecho a la ciudad para niños y niñas, así como actividades físicas para mujeres y niñas.

En la firma también participaron: Javier Garduño Arredondo, titular de la Unidad de Planeación y Desarrollo Institucional (UPDI). Así como, la titular de la Unidad de Prevención de la Violencia y el Delito (UPVD) de la SSPC, Tania Enríquez Mier.
