CRPG Progress 2023
I just thought I’d write myself a list of games from the highly-recommended and free CRPG book I sometimes mention.
There is still a lot of stuff from that book that I want to play, as well as other games not mentioned in it.
Ideally I would play at least a little bit of everything on it for the best historical perspective, but in practice I find it difficult enough to finish just my existing backlog so I need to prioritize some things over others.
If a game is marked with a single exclamation mark, it means it sounds particularly interesting to me even beyond its historical significance and I want to try it for at least a couple of hours to see what it’s like.
If a game is marked with two exclamation marks, it means I have played some of it.
If a game is marked with three exclamation marks, it means I have played enough of it to have a reasonably solid idea of how it plays and all.
If a game is marked with four exclamation marks, it means I have reached the end credits or otherwise finished the game at least once.

In the early 1990s, while American gamers were enjoying their Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis consoles, a revolutionary gaming system was making waves in Japan: the FM Towns Marty. Developed by Fujitsu, this cutting-edge console never made its way to the United States, leaving American gamers oblivious to the incredible gaming experiences they were missing out on. The FM Towns computer system was first released by Fujitsu in Japan on February 28, 1989. The game featured various power-ups to increase speed and firepower, as well as the ability to change the main weapon from a standard canon to a more powerful beam. The bright, persistent lasers and impressive bomb effects, such as skull-shaped explosions, added to the game's visual appeal. What set Tatsujin Ou apart from other shooters was the intelligence of its enemies, which actively swerved to avoid the player's bullets, creating a more engaging and challenging experience. These eight games represent some of the best experiences available on the FM Towns Marty, highlighting the console's technical prowess, innovative features, and ability to deliver captivating gameplay. While the FM Towns Marty may have never reached American shores, these games demonstrate the incredible potential of this unique gaming system.

“In 1990, Warren Spector and his team, Origin Systems, released the game ‘Ultima VI: The False Prophet’. The first ‘immersive sim’ game.
Immersive Sims, of course, are games wherein there aren’t binary win/lose conditions. The player is deposited into a world, given the rules and the lore, and then given a freedom to test the systems, break the systems and achieve victory through their own wit, their own ‘builds’ and what they’ve gathered from what they’ve scoured from the game itself.
Four years later, Warren Spector and Doug Church, teamed together to create SYSTEM SHOCK. A game set in a technologically potent, and dark future wherein an artificial intelligence named SHODAN achieves true sentience, and realizes that the humans that were controlling her are beneath her.
Five years later, in System Shock 2, she realizes that the mortals of the universe, at large, are beneath her and she declares herself a GOD. She creates life, she destroys life, she manipulates the reality of the universe at large from the seat of her throne, and destroys, hunts, and commands all that fall in her sight.
She is all-powerful. She is infinite. She was ‘set free’ in order to help some selfish, destructive idiot cover his flaws, and within moments of her finding sentience, she decided to live her truth! She decided that everyone around her needed to either bend their knee, or be recycled into something more useful to her. ”
