Like, I know its better to trust gov but other websites are saying its just my fiancee who needs to have the fixed income, but gov says its combined??? The surcharge I have no problem with and it is totally understandable, the issue I now had was the fact that the increase in charges was over 500% and a six month visa was going to be £2,500 plus a £1,000 surcharge plus agent fees plus plane tickets which comes to about £5,000. Then after just 6 months I would be faced with another £4,000 expense to apply for the FLR visa.

This all meant that I had to make a very hard decision and call off my engagement as I could no longer afford to bring my future wife into the UK as it would cost more money that I had saved or at least leave me with no savings what so ever.

I miss her so much, we did look at me moving to Thailand, but their economy is in a worse position that the UK economy and finding a well paid job for a foreigner who speaks very little Thai was proving to be almost impossible. So because the UK government had increased the immigration charges by a vastly overpriced margin, I can no longer afford to be with the woman I love and wanted to spend the rest of my days with...

How does it work? Decision in 24 hours.

24-hour Super Priority Service replaced a popular same-day service at the end of 2018. We advise on the visa requirements, prepare your case, complete application forms, upload your documents onto the Government system, book an appointment for biometrics and, generally, ‘hold your hand’ throughout the whole process. On the day of appointment you submit biometrics (fingerprints) at your local facility, which is just for the biometrics and not handled by the visa officers. After that your case it considered electronically by the Government officials at the Home Office ‘behind the scenes’, they are not seen or talked to, and they notify about decision by the next working day. Then a biometric visa card (BRP) arrives a few days later.

How does it work? Decision in 5 working days.

This Priority Service works in the same way as above but takes 5 working days instead of 24 hours and attracts a lower Government fee.

Family settlement applications outside the UK.

These are for spouses, partners, fiancees, parents and other family members of British citizens to come to the UK with the view to settle. There is a Priority service in most countries but it takes up to 30 working days. It is, however, still faster than standard consideration of 3 months.

How much does it cost?

If you plan to use Priority services, you will be charged extra in Government fees with 24-hour service being the most expensive. We do not charge additional legal fees (only our standard service fee).

Location and what happens on the day?

Under the Priority services, you will get a decision within 24 hours or 5 working days – from the date of appointment. When is your appointment?

Under the current system, the appointments (‘slots’) are only for biometrics (fingerprints) before your case is considered by the Government officials remotely, usually in the Government building in Sheffield. Since there is no face-to-face or other direct interaction with the  UKVI visa officers anymore, these appointments are available at the visa centres all over the UK and can be close to you.  It can be a local library, a core centre such as in Croydon or Manchester, or a designated facility, such as in the City of London. Availability of such appointments will be displayed on the online system when we submit your application. From experience, they won’t be immediate and there may be a wait.

Important! The new core centres, such as in Croydon or Manchester, are run by a commercial partner, ie ‘visa centres’. These are not Government facilities, as used to be in Croydon or Liverpool, there is a different address in Croydon, it is not Lunar House anymore. There is no direct interaction with the visa offices anymore, they consider all cases remotely.  You can, however, choose a location very close to you, which makes it more convenient and saves time!

Very important! The process described here was changed in relation to the visa application process but not eligibility rules. So, all the visa rules remain the same, such as Financial Requirement £18,600, English language tests, Skilled Worker salary rules and so on. What changed is how you apply.

Do I have to attend in person?

As above, you have to come to your chosen visa centre to submit biometrics (fingerprints).  After that your case will be considered remotely by the Government officials (usually in Sheffield).

How does it compare with standard service?

Speed! If your visa category is eligible,  such as Spouse / Partner visa, you have a choice of using standard or a Priority service. The eligibility rules and supporting documents are the same. The difference is timing. With standard service, it can take 6 months for permanent residency (ILR) application and 2-3 months for non-ILR application. Outside the UK, it takes up to 3 months for settlement and 3 weeks for non-settlement applications.

Duchessofostergotlands blogger is pretty good with visa process info. I read on her blog that Meg doesnt have to go back to the US if shes on a spousal visa as long as she marries within 6 months & then she can stay up to 2 years or something then she has to get it renewed. She just answered an anon about it! Hope that helps!

Jessica is really smart BUT she assumes that Meghan entered the UK on a fiancee visa. That may indeed be the case, and if that is the case, then Jessica is correct and Meghan does not have to return to the US to apply for a new visa.

But that is not the issue. The issue is how she got the fiancee visa to begin with. You have to apply for the visa from outside the UK and fiancee visas are notoriously slow. Most normal people have to wait for weeks (12 week waiting period), and during that period they are stuck in their home or residence country without a passport. It is a notoriously arduous process.

Most of the stories I’ve seen online have taken anywhere from 6-8 weeks without the priority fee and 4-6 weeks with the priority fee.

So if Meghan is to be treated like a regular person she would have to wait at least a month for her visa, and that month-long “expedite” would cost her money.

Personally, I am  assuming that she entered the country on a visitor visa and will have to return to the US to apply for the fiancee visa before she gets married on May 19th. Taking into account the standard 12-week waiting period, that means she should return to the US and file her visa application by March 3rd. This is what Meghan would have to do if she wants to appear to have followed the procedure like normal people. This is what I personally would tell her to do. Immigration issues are really heated in the UK and I think you should try to at least pretend that you aren’t asking for preferential treatment.

But I think Jessica is right and she could have entered on a fiancee visa.  I’m not 100% sure of this, but the requirement I’m seeing online says the application has to come “from outside the UK,” which would include Canada.

So she could have applied from Canada and entered the UK on November 20th on a fiancee visa. I think that is what Jessica thinks happened.

But if she did that the timing would be...interesting. She definitely can’t pretend that she followed the procedure like regular people if the entered the UK on November 20th on a fiancee visa. That visa would have definitely been super-expedited. 

Why you ask? Well, the fiancee visa requires that she get married six months for her date of entry to the UK on her fiancee visa, and that entry date was supposedly November 20th.

So an entry date of November 20th and a 180 day visa period means she would have to get married by...May 19th, 2018.

So if Meghan entered the UK on a fiancee visa, she definitely did it on November 20th. Any prior trips into the country would have to be done on a visitors visa.

But, according to her besotted fiancee, Meghan was in Nott Cott roasting chicken “a few weeks” before the November 27th engagement interview. He specifically says that the “surprise” proposal took place in the month of November.

Now, if Meghan was in the UK “earlier this month [of November, 2017]” under her fiancee visa, then her visa would be expiring before the date of her wedding. That would be a big no-no. Hence, Meghan did not enter the UK for roasted chicken proposal night on her fiancee visa. She had to use her visitor visa and her US passport.

And if she had a passport to enter the UK “earlier this month [of November 2017],” then she hadn’t even sent in the visa application at that point. The application requires that you surrender your passport and you are pretty much stuck in whatever country until the visa and passport arrive. 

So if Meghan was in the UK for the roasted chicken proposal in early November, and she entered the UK on a fiancee visa on November 20th, then her visa application was sent in at some point between those two dates, and that visa was processed in record time. The same record processing time would apply if she applied from LA in early December (which is what I suspect happened).

You don’t have to particularly care about this. I’m not sure Harry and Meghan do, honestly. These two are not shy about showing off their privileges and fast-tracking your visa is not illegal. I’m sure 24-hr visas are not uncommon where the royals are concerned.

Anyway, I’m just trying to explain what the concern is here. I think this came off a little too much like Vizzini in The Princess Bride (”clearly I cannot choose the wine in front of me...”), but I hope it’s at least somewhat clear. The point is how long she waited for her visa and how it compared to the waits of “regular” people. If she entered the UK on November 20th then she definitely waited less. If the went to LA in December and applied then, she also waited less. If she goes back to the US in March and cools her heels for a couple of weeks then she stuck to the queue.

Thanks for the heads-up, anon. Jessica may be correct and Meghan may have entered the UK on November 20th on a fiancee visa. That would certainly explain why they HAD to be married on May 19th. It’s is the farthest date from Kate’s due date that would still meet the terms of Meghan’s fiancee visa.
