What I learned about performance plastic this week
After looking around all day, and got so frustrated learning that salesmen are pretty much the same, but Plasticologist’s are a cut above. Salesman after salesman, and I got about the same not quite true sales speech were given. I remember these, that are now my favorite “Don’t worry most plastics are pretty much the same” and “You tried one type of plastic, you’ve tried them all”. I’m no plastic expert, I am sure that those two pitches are so incorrect. I require a plastic supplier that that has a basic knowledge of what they are supplying and not be just trying to make a quick buck. As a machinist, I will share that my lathe make great parts with Delrin, but I have to start from scratch on UHMW with the same settings, it does not machine the same. The waste chips get all sticky and are a pain to tear off. I learned from that little experience I know that not all plastic materials work well for me and my machines. After that, I began a quest to find the correct plastics for my machining application. I came accross a plastic ProfessionalWhile doing some research I discovered a Plasticologist. At first I was a bit skeptical mostly because I’ve never heard of the word before. But hey, if I’m trying to find accurate plastic knowledge why wouldn’t I go to a Plasticologist. I made the phone call and told him that I think I need acetal. I was surpised when he asked, “Which form of Acetal are you looking for? Do you want the POM-C or the POM-H?” Of course I have no idea what he is talking about. All I knew about acetal then was its black or white, and that it is a plastic. I let him know that I didn’t know there was a difference between the two or which material I would need, but that I thought I had been using the Delrin material. It's good to save money and now I have been improving performanceThis plastic expert was great, and instead of him trying to sell me the more expensive high cost material. He was kind enough to take some time and explain the differences between these two main types of Acetal. I seems that I could use the copolymer which is less expensive type of acetal instead of the more expensive homopolymer called Delrin. It was nice to actually talk to someone that had an accurate knowledge of plastic and was kind enought to share the knowledge with me. I. was curious so I asked him, “How do you know so much about plastic?” It turns out the company he works for has several of the best plastic experts in the Delrin Rod industry and with all their years of experience combined it totaled over 197 years; and that’s just with the inside customer service team. They are also trained and have recieved certification by the International Association of Plastic Distributors. They seem to take pride in what they do. I won't ever buy from a plastic supplier that hires just salesmen. From now on, I will only deal with a Plasticologist to gain my loyalty as a customer.

WHAT IS UHMW PLASTIC?
UHMW is ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene bar with excellent high abrasion and impact resistance properties. UHMW is a high crystalline, high-density polyethylene polymer with a median molecular weight that falls within the range of 3.1 to 5.0 million. UHMW machined parts will outwear all other materials like metals, nylons, or fluoroplastics. This plastic has the same qualities of other polyethylene plastics. Since the UHMW material resists wear, corrosion, and friction it allows for an extended equipment life and can cut maintenance costs. There are a variety of UHMW applications, including gears, rollers, wear plates, bearings, and more. 
UHMW MACHINED PARTS
Parts machined from UHMW polyethylene showcase an exceptional combination of outstanding properties. High abrasion resistance, low coefficient of friction, self-lubrication, non-adherent surface, excellent chemical fatigue, impact resistance, ease of machinability, and good noise dampening properties, are all inclusive of UHMW. Its outstanding characteristics embrace very high resistance to wear and abrasion, and high performance at extraordinarily low temperatures (i.e. liquid nitrogen -259 degrees C). Only when temperatures reach 185 degrees F, will UHMW start to soften and lose its abrasion resistance characteristics.
Because UHMW features a comparatively high expansion and contraction rate once subjected to temperature changes, it's not suggested for close tolerance applications in these environments
