June 10th
My alarm went off and I immediately got up to get ready. I cannot believe we were able to get tickets to this concert. It was sold out and we purchased two resold tickets by chance. I stopped over at my classmate's room for a few minutes to help her with her eyeliner and then we were off. This was going to be an epic adventure! Once at the bus station, we realized she forgot her phone charger so she could connect it to her battery pack. She was panicking, and so was I. We set out to find a charger. We stopped into every hotel and store, asking if they sold chargers. They did not have the kind that was needed. Luckily, right before we got on the bus she ran into a Centra and found the charger she needed!
While on the bus to the venue, I styled my hair for the concert and my classmate got some sleep. After a 45-minute ride we were there and had to prepare for the long walk ahead. By the time we found our section by the stage, we had 13,000 steps in already. It was so worth it though because we were in the third row of the pit. It also rained on and off but it didn't matter.
We arrived at Slane Castle at 10 am. It was beautiful and the land sprawled out as far as I could see. It would soon fill up with over 80,000 fans waiting to see Harry Styles take the stage on his Love Tour (picture 15). Harry wasn’t scheduled until 8pm. We enjoyed the music of Wet Leg, Inhaler, a DJ, and one of Harry's songwriters as we waited for him to take the stage. We caught glimpses of him standing outside the castle looking on as the crowd grew.
The long awaited intro music started and Harry Styles took the stage (pictures 1 - 10, 14). It was epic! His energy is so infectious and intoxicating. He was so close to us and he played music that I love but thought I wouldn't hear on this tour. He also played an unreleased song that is not played at many of his shows. He ended the show wrapping the Irish flag around him. Again, it was epic but the long walk back was not. After standing in the sun for 12 hours, we were tired and it was another 13,000-step journey to catch the first bus back and then the subsequent second bus. We finally arrived back at UCD at 2 am. A day to remember! One I probably wouldn’t have experienced in the States because of the rising cost of tickets. The tickets would have cost thousands more than the $300 we paid. Thank you Ireland!
June 11th
I woke up pretty late and in a lot of pain from the night before. So much walking and standing! The rush of the concert was still present as I got dressed to go to the Hurling Match. I think I may have underestimated the toll the journey would have on my body. I was so exhausted. I eventually got up and met with the group of five I was going to the game with.
We took the bus to the stadium in Dublin, where the match was being held. It was the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship . The Leinster Senior Hurling Championship started in 1888 after a man named Michael Cusack realized there needed to be one set of regulations in Hurling.
The match was so exhilarating (pictures 11 - 13). We sat in the front row and were right near one of the goals. The action was so close to us. We got to talking with a few fans from Galway, and they told us that Kilkenny wins every time. That made me root for Galway even more. I always like an underdog. Unfortunately, Kilkenny won but Galway played the game so well to stay in it for as long as they did. Right down to the last few seconds. I bought a t-shirt there to remember my time.
After the game, I was sunburnt and still so tired. I decided that I would go back to UCD and turn in early so I would be refreshed for the week ahead. I watched a movie, took a shower, returned the bag I borrowed from my classmate, and went to sleep.
June 12th
I woke up feeling refreshed today! I am ready for whatever this week brings and I am excited to visit Scotland this weekend. To prepare, we decided that we would each look into things to do in Edinburg on our own and then come together as a group to figure out what excursions we would book.
Today, I am supposed to meet up with my classmates to plan for a group project. We met and divided into two groups; me and the classmate I borrowed the bag from would work together, and the other three would be in their own group. We decided to do our 10-minute video on Hurling and the match we saw yesterday. We wrote out the entire script and then decided that we would film the next week when we had more time.
We all went our separate ways and got ready to attend the Irish Literature Class that we had that evening. Our teacher had described it as a pub crawl, and she was not wrong. We went from pub to pub, listening to our tour guide recite and sing passages and verses from various Irish books and folktales. He quoted stories from the Dubliners and took us to places that were mentioned in those stories. We were walking in history.
The night went by quickly. After the tour, we went back to one of the pubs for Baileys Cheesecake. Unfortunately, they were out so my classmate and I found something else to eat. After the pub, we went back to UCD, and I fell asleep quickly.

Astronomers discover supermassive black hole in an ultracompact dwarf galaxy
An optical image of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1399 and its satellite UCD3. Left panel: the image of UCD3 in F606W filter obtained by Hubble telescope. Right panel: an infrared image of UCD3 obtained using the SINFONI spectrograph. Credit: NASA/STScI/ESO/Afanasiev et al. A team of scientists from the Faculty of Physics and Sternberg State Astronomical Institute, MSU, leading an international collaboration with members from Europe, Chile, the U.S. and Australia discovered a supermassive black hole in the center of the Fornax galaxy. The results of the research were published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society journal.
Fornax UCD3 is a part of a Fornax galaxy cluster and belongs to a very rare and unusual class of galaxies, ultracompact dwarfs. The mass of such dwarf galaxies reaches several dozen millions of solar masses, and the radius does not typically exceed 300 light years. This ratio between mass and size makes UCDs the densest stellar systems in the universe.
"We have discovered a supermassive black hole in the center of Fornax UCD3. The black hole mass is 3.5 million that of the sun, similar to the central black hole in our own Milky Way," explained Anton Afanasiev, the first author of the article, a student of the department of the Faculty of Physics, MSU.
In the course of the study, the scientists used the data collected with SINFONI, an infrared integral field spectrograph installed at one of the 8.2 meter VLT telescopes in Chile operated by the European Southern Observatory. Having analyzed the observed spectra, the authors derived the dependence between stellar velocity dispersion and radius in Fornax UCD3. Velocity dispersion quantifies the average variation between the individual stellar line-of-sight velocity and the mean velocity of the entire stellar population. In the presence of a massive body such as a black hole, the stars are influenced by its gravity and accelerate in different directions. Due to that, their average speed does not grow, but the dispersion increases considerably. This is the very effect that was observed in this galaxy—the velocity dispersion in its center is so high that it can only be explained by the presence of a massive central black hole.
After that, the scientists compared the dependence of velocity and dispersion with dynamic models based on different assumptions of black hole mass. They found that the model suggesting the mass of the black hole being equal to 3.5 million solar masses agreed with the observations best. They also considered the possibility that no black hole was present there at all, but that hypothesis was excluded with the statistical significance of (99.7 percent).
The black hole discovered by the authors is the fourth ever to be found in UCDs and corresponds to 4 percent of the total galaxy mass. In average galaxies, this ratio is considerably lower (about 0.3 percent). Though there are few known examples, the existence of massive black holes in UCDs is a strong argument for the tidal origin of such galaxies. According to this hypothesis, an average-sized galaxy passed a bigger and more massive one at a certain stage of its evolution, and as a result of the influence of tidal forces, lost the majority of its stars. The remaining compact nucleus has become what we know as an ultracompact dwarf.
"To be able to say with complete assurance that this hypothesis is correct, we need to discover more supermassive black holes in UCDs. This is one of the prospects of this work.
Moreover, a similar methodology may be applied to more massive and less dense compact elliptical galaxies. In one of our next works, we will study the population of central black holes in objects of this kind," concluded the scientist.

【Eupholks】
youtube
【Bullsxxt】
UCD(MC)、 tommy(Gt)、Naruki Numazawa (Key,Syn, Vo)、Ecus Nuis a.k.a. Pam(Ba,Syn)、Shotaro Sugasawa (Dr,Per)。

【Ukico】
youtube
【LIA】
【LAND OF PEACE】
Ykiki BeatやSuchmos、D.A.N.
Drum : Harry

Many college students don’t know what textbooks they’ll need and how much they’ll cost until they’ve enrolled in courses and checked their professors’ syllabi.
But universities across California, especially in the 23-campus California State University system, have become more transparent about textbooks and more proactive in assigning free, digital or low-cost books to students. And some institutions, such as UC Davis, are working to revolutionize the textbook market and make it more affordable for all students.
California State University’s Affordable Learning Solutions’ initiative, which began in 2010, integrates library resources, digital books, low-cost publisher materials and open educational resources in college courses.
“Some professors don’t require textbooks because they want you to save money,” said Mayra Solorzano, a senior studying criminal justice at Cal State East Bay. Solorzano said she has become thriftier about textbooks with each year at the college.
“I spent a lot in my first year, probably around $300,” she said. But this semester, she spent $118 renting used books.
Solorzano said she was able to keep her costs under $150 because the campus bookstore sold out of one book and forced her to seek a solution on social media.
“I went on Twitter and found it for less on Slugbooks,” she said, referring to a website that sells and rents books to college students.
Students are more aware of textbook prices, especially as affordability plays a more significant role in their decision-making over which institutions to attend or even what career to pursue.
Whenever they have the option, students are opting not to spend money on textbooks. Student spending on course materials has declined by 31 percent over the past 10 years, according to the National Association of College Stores, or NACS.
The average college student spent $415 in 2018 on their course materials — $69 less than the previous year, according to the college stores association.
While most students choose to buy their books, more than half of students responding this spring to an association survey, said they are opting for less expensive options like renting or borrowing books.
Some of the declines in student textbook spending could be attributed to programs such as CSU’s Affordable Learning Solutions’ initiative.
Nearly 8,500 CSU course sections, of which the system has tens of thousands, were part of the initiative last year and saved students more than $50 million, said Leslie Kennedy, director of digital content and academic technology services for CSU.
Last year, the state Legislature also moved to lower the costs of textbooks by requiring all California Community Colleges and the California State universities to indicate on college schedules what courses offer “zero-cost” textbooks or digital resources. The Legislature requested the ten campuses in the University of California system to do the same.
Publishers also are working with CSU professors and bookstores to participate in the system’s Immediate Access Program, which gives free course materials to students by the first day of class.
Often students don’t have the money to buy a textbook at the start of term, so the Immediate Access Program gives them time to pay for the book until the course drop-date which is typically within the first couple of weeks of a semester.
And digital textbooks in the program are discounted up to 80 percent, she said.
Instructors at UCD are optimistic that a new way of purchasing textbooks will further help to drive down costs for students.
Next year, the university will launch a pilot textbook subscription service.
“Think Spotify, for textbooks,” said Jason Lorgan, executive director of campus recreation, Memorial Union and Stores for UCD.
The opt-in service would charge students a flat fee of about $200 each term for their course materials regardless of major or requirements. Lorgan said such a model could revolutionize the textbook industry in the way that the music industry changed how fans access and pay for music.
For example, instead of ordering 100 copies of a first-edition textbook for $300 each, the bookstores would purchase the same number of digital copies at $30 apiece every term. The cost to students would be the same regardless of how many books the student uses.
The digital content is cheaper for students because, like the music industry, students wouldn’t own the materials indefinitely but would only have access for the term or the year, Lorgan said.
University officials are optimistic publishers will sign up to participate in the subscription plan, which would also eliminate the need for the used book market.
Lorgan said the subscription service is optional for publishers and faculty can still require students use books that aren’t part of the service.
“If it’s $300 today, it’ll be $300 tomorrow,” he said.
UC sees the service as a win for everyone: publishers would make more money over time, students would pay less and faculty can continue to choose the textbooks they prefer without fear of sacrificing quality in favor of price, Lorgan said. The pilot service will start with all undergraduates next year.
“We think this will make a real difference,” Lorgan said. “Some of the other national models dealing with textbook affordability promote (free content) but that is still optional. We’re trying to take another look at the model and totally reinvent it, so we get rid of the things driving the cost up.”

Nonlethal weapons can kill you. Police crowd-control tools should be regulated
On October 16, 2004, about a thousand people gathered around an apartment complex in Davis, California, for a so-called "Picnic Day," an annual event noted for a lot of alcohol consumption. At some point, the streets became jammed with party-goers and illegally parked cars, and the Davis police called the UC Davis campus police to assist with crowd control. UC-Davis's finest showed up to help. Officers ordered the crowd to disperse, but the gathering was so raucous that many attendees could not hear the instructions. Others were pinned in by the hoard of partiers and were unable to comply with the police order to disperse. Unable to control the crowd, several UC-Davis police officers fired pepper balls (similar to pepper spray) from pepper ball guns. Timothy Nelson, a passive bystander, was hit in the face by a projectile and suffered a permanent eye injury.
Nelson sued the City of Davis and three UC-Davis police officers, claiming a violation of his constitutional rights. In 2012, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the firing of pepper balls at a passive, nonresistant crowd constituted an unlawful seizure and a violation of the Fourth Amendment. The court also ruled that a reasonable police officer would know that firing pepper balls at a passive crowd constituted unreasonable force. Did the UC-Davis police force learn its lesson from that lawsuit? Apparently not, In 2011, UC-Davis police officers sprayed pepper spray directly into the faces of passive protesters who were part of a nonviolent Occupy Wall Street protestant event. Several of the injured students sued, and UC Davis quickly settled the lawsuit for a million dollars in damages. But he local district attorney refused to file criminal charges against the officers involved. In fact, one officer, who was the chief offender, actually received a worker's compensation check for the psychological stress he claimed to have suffered while he was spraying students with dangerous chemicals. As the New York Times reported recently, the so-called nonlethal weapons that the police use to disperse crowds can sometimes cause severe injuries and even death. According to the Times, police in Austin, Texas fired rubber bullets that caused several people to be hospitalized and inflicted permanent brain damage to two individuals. I support calls for legal restraints on the police to keep them from recklessly firing tear gas, rubber bullets, pepper spray, or bean-bags as a means of dispersing crowds. Nevertheless, I am very sympathetic to the police, who put their lives in danger to suppress riots, looting, and arson. More than 300 officers were injured during the George Floyd protests, and at least two were killed. The police definitely need access to non-lethal force to suppress crowds who threaten public safety--arsonists, looters, and brick throwers. So I hope that the restraints on the use of tear gas and rubber bullets will allow police to use whatever nonlethal tools are necessary to prevent lawless mobs from burning down our cities.

Midterm Mayhem
I am currently finishing up my sixth week of classes at UCD, and, I must say, the academic system here is much different than anticipated.
First, it is typical to take 30 credits here, but this roughly translates back to 15 credits at Michigan. Luckily, I am only taking 25 credits here, but it transfers back to 14.5 at home. Nearly all classes are 5 credits (with the exception of a few being 10 credits), meaning that most people take six courses at a time. I am taking five, which I think is plenty, in comparison to my usual four.
Some of my classes are traditional lecture-style, some use a flipped classroom model where we teach the material to ourselves and then work on problems in class, and some have discussion sections or labs. Culturally, people do not stress the concept of time as much. Rather than waiting in your seat for class to start, all of the Irish students wait outside until the exact time the class starts, and sometimes they even all walk in a few minutes late. This makes it pretty simple to tell who the international students are, as they are the only ones waiting in the classroom five minutes early. Many of my engineering professors start teaching late or lecture past the time class is supposed to end. It may be an issue if you have back to back classes, but professors don’t mind people entering the classroom tardy either.
Equipment in my Material Science lab
Another major difference is the weight professors put on final projects, papers, or exams. This definitely makes it more difficult to keep up on work, but we also get lots of breaks in our schedule. We have a two week spring break coming up, and we also get a week off in April between classes and finals.
I am taking two humanities and three engineering courses. My two humanities classes include “Making of Modern Ireland” and “The Early Irish Drama Movement.” Both of these only meet once a week with a discussion section that follows. Each consists of a discussion section with a small participation grade, some small midterm assignments, and a final paper worth 70% of my grade or more.
My first engineering class is a Materials Science course, which meets the most of any of my classes. I have class three times a week, with a lab 3 times this semester. In this class, we have three lab reports each worth 10% of our grade and a final exam worth 70%. The lab is also much different from those at Michigan. Rather than executing the lab yourself, we were broken up into small groups of five or so students, where we basically just watched a graduate student complete the lab, while we took notes so we could write a report after.
My other two engineering courses are both chemical engineering courses. Again, the finals are worth the majority of the grade, with a few smaller assignments. The first is “Bioreactor Modeling and Control,” which technically is a Master’s level class here, but transfers back to a 300-level Biomedical Engineering class. My other class is “Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer.”
The view outside the engineering building
I am starting to have quite a few midterm assignments pile up, but I’m hoping to get them all finished by this weekend, as a few friends are visiting me during Michigan’s spring break. I’m also looking forward to our two week spring break coming up (once I get through all this school work)!
Thanks for reading!
