1. THE SHINING MY BELOVED- im a careeer hotel worker who got their start in a historic haunted hotel in colorado, six hours south from the stanley hotel as a matter of fact! and im still passionnate about and working in the industry seven-ish years later! i feel like the shining really captures the magic and mysticism that hotels have as liminal spaces and (i believe) as places where the barrier is thinner. having been doing this for this long, i can tell you that you wil sometimes just See Shit or have a room that has a weird story that everybody avoids because it feels bad, thats just part of it

2. and 3. are for the same reasons!! its two of his longest, under the dome and the stand. in both of them i fell in love with the huge cast of relatable or interesting characters with realistic and varied motivations, and the fact that the stories themselves have the supernatural element as a driving force but the story is primarily character driven! LOVE that shit give me a whole town of people to fall in love with and give each of them at least five chapters and im NOT kidding. I fucking adore your comic panelling, any advice on how to do it? Like specific ratios or ways to divide the page?

god there's so much advice i COULD give but i really dont wanna end up writing a book here. so I guess I'll say this: however you divide the page you should be CONSISTENT with it, i literally just learned/internalized this but it's made comic paneling soo much easier. when you break that consistency it will be more impactful. hold up lemme grab some pages.

so i recently started making loose stitches a 4 tier comic. it's not the exact same for each page cuz i'm lazy but i think it's made legibility way better. before i think it was kinda uhhhhh a little all over the place. not BAD but a little difficult to tell where your eyes supposed to go sometimes. which isnt great for a commic.

the page on the left in particular has always bothered me cuz i always read the top panels incorrectly and it's like. fuck man what is the paneling here why is it in two columns ????? that's so hard to understand. but the page on the right can be more or less easily understood (by someone who knows how to read comics) even without panel borders because it's just a simple 4 panel square.

one thing my comic professor really stressed was that he didn't like weird paneling or weird borders. for the most part, a square is fine. AND HE'S RIGHT. weird paneling is fun and cool but should be used sparingly or with intention, cuz if you do it too much then like. how tf are ppl gonna read your comic.

that being said there are a lot of cool ways to cut up panels even if they're just squares hold on lemme grab some examples

so the panels here are all square but the image in the one at the bottom is almost like a mural. one thing i really like to using is a lot of heavy BLACK, what can i say silhouette's have my entire heart.

in my fable comic, I used a 3 tier system. it wasn't the same exact size across all pages but all pages had 3 tiers of paneling. that way i can be a little more flexible with the SIZE of the panels to emphasize the more important things, without it feeling like it's all over the place

meanwhile in my comic final i used a 4 tier system where each tier was nearly the same across every page, but you can collapse tiers together for establishing shots and big reveals so that they're more impactful. it's still fully within the grid system I set up so it doesn't feel like it's messing with shit either.

ok i just spent a lot of time rambling about this one particular concept and it's probably not even what you wanted to hear about :') i didnt even go into ratios or anythinggg guhhhh sowwy

other than all that i'd just say you gotta keep looking at what comic artists have written and take note of how they use space and cut things up. there's this book called How To Read Nancy and it has all these exercises for understanding the building blocks of nancy. for real the author is OBSESSIVE and goes through everything of a 3 panel nancy strip from body language to spot blacks to the minutia of the background. we used this book in my class and did some of the exercises in the back and i think it's really good at getting you to THINK about what you're drawing. and you can easily pirate it if you're broke.

also try to make sure things dont get stagnant on a page. zoom out if you're only doing close ups (i try to make sure every page of loose stitches has at least one full body shot even tho I'm lazy and wanna just do talking heads- talking heads arent interesting!!)

also, take advantage of the fact you're drawing a COMIC. you can do shit in comics that you can't do in other mediums, try to implement them when u can! ALSO PRACTICE. you're not gonna get better just by reading and watching. you gotta do it lol. ok ok that's enough and you didn't even ask for that stuff you asked about PANELING sfdasfsd byeee

Thank you so much friend! Its messages like this that keep me going! Trust me I sometimes feel like posts flop at times and while people always tell you not to compare your shit to other people's shit, you're gonna do it anyway. Its human nature. You gotta really love playing this game honestly. You gotta really love this broken ass game to keep playing and posting. Just keepin it real lol I hate this game but I love how great of a creative outlet it is, love how corny it is and I love that I can use it to do basically anything I want. My point here is you realy have to LIKE the things you put out. Don't put a story or edit out unless you love it.

As for mutuals, etc. I honestly think that stuff takes time to build up. I've been playing around in this community for several years so it takes time to find mutuals, etc. Especially when you don't create cc (deadass). Find a sims story you like or gameplay and comment on what's happening. I always think its weird when I see a story post with no replies or very few. That's the best part! Never hesitate to be the first reply. It might even have a ton of reblogs and likes, which is cool, its getting seen, but I always think getting those replies and getting to talk about your OCs and the thing that happened is what makes folks stick around.

What kept me motivated goes back to the above. I am literally a geek for this game. I had no idea what "numbers" were. I just wanted to show off my game and have fun with other nerds. I'm a straight goofball and it comes off when I write and I really enjoy making other people crack up like I do at these pixels. Follow tags that you like, and then find sims stuff you like from those tags and start following people. Go from there in terms of replying, sending asks, etc. You'll get a base of mutuals in no time, friend.

i actually came across your work wayyyy back when i first got into jjk. i read "How To Be A Dog" and i still don't know what to say about it.

the best way to describe my feelings towards that fic is that it's like i got there late to the party. there's some meat left on the bones i haven't eaten. i don't think i've gotten everything out of it.

for example, i had to re-read some sections over again to fully parse what was going on with the reader's curse (i think it was a snake and i am saying that from memory, scout's honor). and the fic spends a lot of time in gojo's POV, which I very much enjoyed!

but most fanfics, especially reader-inserts, stick to the reader POV and are written to be much more immediately digestible than other forms of fiction. you know the characters, you know the setting, let's get to the MEAT of it.

but your fic was like, the type where you really need to Pay Attention to each and every line, because each line does contribute something distinct to the characters or tone. it was so DENSE and i was NOT prepared to run into that while cheerfully looking for noncon gojo/reader porn skjfhglhdsg.

it's rare to find a fic that goes that hard. like if you want your fic to be That Deep you gotta commit to it, you know? and you don't have to do that for a fic to be good or enjoyable, you just do it For The Art, because you see what the fic could be and you want it to be that way. kudos to you.

it was an amazing work of fiction. maybe one day i will have the attention span to read the whole thing and actually feel like i'm understanding everything and the fic will stop haunting me whenever i think about it

i think like. i love the genre of absurd stuff so much in my media consumption but ive always had a hard time finding space for it in fanfiction. so writing that gojo dark comedy fic was an attempt to make some room for it and try my hand out and it ended up being a person favorite piece despite how insane it is

as mentioned in my other reply, yeah of course he has! i also don't think i've ever been "canon" in my life on any blog ever. you've been following me since my fate fandom days, i still remember the "isn't it messed up a goblet is a tiny cup instead of a baby goblin" "you worry me sometimes, shinji" meme u made for me... and thus you know my long track record of looking at canon and grabbing a blowtorch.

wesker's characterization in canon is ... well, campy (endearing, terrifying, sometimes cringe) hes my pathetic meow meow and his RE1 dialogue lives rent free in my head STOP DONT OPEN THAT DOOR! ... chris??? stop it!!!! unforgettable horrible campy dialogue is what makes RE iconic, and wesker has been a staple of the franchise and we all know it. but he also went from a guy dual wielding jobs to the calculating mastermind to unhinged social darwinism and it felt sorta sloppy in the end, how capcom handled his final arc?

so i made it better lmao. because that's what i specialize in. i've learned to hone my craft and humble brag, i'm pretty good at what i do- and what i do is expand on characters by delving into possibilities in psychology, because also that's my JOB irl (psych nursing, maybe i should go into research). wesker's behavior, from a clinical standpoint, is fascinating to write out- his untreated mania and psychosis, the delusions of granduer, and the inevitable crash from the manic state? still line up with a great deal of what capcom gives.

it could be that deep, is what i'm saying, and even if it isn't, i'm making it that deep

idk uhhh is it unpopular to say that wesker's rather inexperienced in relationships? i know there are plenty of arguments for wesker being the suave "can get anyone in bed just by looking at them" sort of guy, but in my heart i know he's rather terrified of intimacy ... no doubt i'm sure he catches on very quick and would be able to blow any partner's mind, but! it just doesn't feel like his priority?

I enjoy coming to new york for the most part. I think.. I always have mixed feelings on this place.my friendships,the lifestyle, people, rent. It all seems like a blur though. It is quite an overwhelming place, I feel tired and hungover most of the time. perhaps it would be different if i lived here, i feel as if i cannot afford it.- yet seems as if every cool artsy sk9 person is here. wtf? how? it doesn't add up to me most of the time. rich kidds playground, or just poor for eternity. ugh. I try to make the most out of it. I say yes to most social obligations and a lot of it involves partying. I dont like partying. raised by an addict and half my friends growing up dead from drug related causes. None of my current friends seem to like it either, everyone seems tired and over it.. yet engage wit it. its unhealthy and will catch up eventually if it hasnt already. I feel like I cant hang here - in ways its threatening to my insecurities. i need 2 work on that. its better to spend a more intense time with one or two people rather than a bunch of others I dont know. yet I still long for new friendships or the potential. plus u gotta go to a bar here it seems. Sometimes I find myself in situations where I wish I was staring at a wall or could be anywhere else, but struggle to leave or take action on those feelings. Exhibit A- will just be my closest guy friend cuz I hangout with him a lot

I wanna explain each group and why I feel like idrk if I want these ppl in my life except for a small exception of exhibit B because they’re basically family. Only thing is they all use substances that really influence my decisions on whether I use or not which is not their fault but it’s toxic for me to be around that environment. Otherwise

exhibit A- started off as just a friendship, we both told each other about guys and girls we liked or wanted to be with. At first I felt bad but I’m so fucking sick of people feeling so bad for him because he’s so nice and he loves me so much. He’s a great person, but not for me. And idk why people can’t just respect that and stop making me out to be a villain because I don’t have feelings for someone. This is kinda my fault I guess but I used to change in front of him and I didn’t rly care cuz I thought we had established that we’re just friends. Well now when I ask him to look away he really thinks he has the right to go “no I’ve seen it before idc.” Or most the time he does look away but gives me a hard time. There’s even been times where he looked back and was like OH MY BAD I thought u were done like no u didn’t lol u just wanted to be a fucking perv. So obviously I’ve established new boundaries, I go to my bathroom to change, I literally scream at him when he touches me, I always talk about guys. That’s the funny thing too he calls me such a whore and I’m fake just cuz I don’t wanna be with him.

Exhibit C: I actually really love these girls. I’ve never had any issues with them. Tbh the only reason I ever debate if I should let them go is because I feel like I’ve been a bad friend. We all started to be friends because we worked at the same job and we all liked to party and we were all lowkey a little weird. We moved on in life and they both have full time jobs, both in relationships, and I’m still partying like a maniac so I think they just don’t want to be around that which I totally understand. I started to feel sad because they never invite me to places they go but that’s cuz they don’t always wanna be all drunk and fucked up and tbh I never ask them to do shit either so in the middle of this post I acc asked if they all wanted to hangout and play video games

Exhibit D: ok this group of ppl confuses the fuck out of me. Everybody talks about each other like someone’s always mad at one particular person in the group I feel like, or worried about someone. I’ve had one person in this group steal from me. She’s jealous of all of us. One of the girls in the friend group only talks to me when nobody else is really there otherwise I get ignored I feel like. Sometimes I feel like they’re just trolling me too but that could be my insecurities. These people never ask me to hangout anymore and tbh I don’t rly care lol I hung out with them when I was in a really bad spot in my life and although they’re not the reason for it I just associate them with that time unfortunately. last night i went to some random ass town called Gorizia on the border with slovania for work. The whole region was so slovanian that even in the market where we worked the signs and shit they were all bilingual in italian and slovanian.

slovanian lowkey gives off turkish vibes.

not so many of us came from padova so we just hoped on a black van and left. the driver who gave off strong leonardo vibes was playing twenty one pilots for the good portion of the time. i liked him kinda. i was lowkey admiring his long neck the entire time of the trip when i was sitting behind him liKE A FUCKING PERV YES IKR.

i didn't get to have much convo with him. i actually got none. except for the time when after legit 6 hours of work in the market he saw me and was like "lets go lets go lets go" without even looking at me for a sec thinking well since I'm speaking english the lil bitch is supposed to I'm talking to her ight?

there was this other guy from pd who i legit got to have a convo in italian with which felt nice and ... weird? cuz I'm never mentally prepared to speak italian?

and oh my god I'll never forget 'Vlad'. My team leader there.

he would see me across the hall miles away and shout my name "Paaaaaaaria" with theatrical eye rollings. And then see my work and be like "Maaaaarvelous. If you ever need any assistance (except for of course boyfriend material stuff) just call me. I'm used to be called with any consonant".

he once moved some stuff which made a loud noise i looked at him he was like im sorry i didnt mean to be this much dramatic *followed by yet another theatrical eye roll".

basta. when i got home and to my bed i was so tired i couldn't even sleep. i woke up at 11 am tho. went to mensa. got anxious. felt short (about that i was walking in portello some other day with hilal when a tall girl was walking towards us with her friend i heard her say "bassa" looking at me and the other "si sente" and looking down.

ladies and gentlemen. this happened. people are mean dead-inside assholes. They say whatever shit they want, making more space in your mind to wonder whether other people have always thought the same but never mentioned it.

although the pain the bitch inflicted was soon oddly compensated when hilal said "but girl you are average".

later that night when we were already drunk we decided to go to hilal's house and get more booze on the way because why not and also because hilal left italy to turkey on the following day.

we got there got more drunk. ade joined. we got high. I started speaking italian ade was like wtf you're at least B1.

before that hilal was talking about berfin and sometimes i get this feeling when other people are opening up to me deeply that okay but why do i not do that with them? like why do i find it so freaking difficult to open up about something that happened to me and was way more brutal but there my friends. is exactly where you start losing friends. so you keep your mouth shut.

but anyway. that night i realized it's different with hilal. when she opens up mi sento piu leggere invece.

i saw fatima today at mensa after a longass time cuz she was in cividale and i was just ... busy surviving the shitwave of shit of which I've had nothing but recently. She told me about this weirdass roomie of her who according to her has been hacked by some creepy dude for the past 12 fucking years. the dude even deleted his thesis and stuff. Fatima said i even once asked her to share her internet with me through hotspot and she was like no this is how my sister got hacked as well i dont recommend u do the same. i mean the whole fucking situation is so fucking creepily stupid we all dont know whether to feel pity whether to laugh cuz shit looks so fucking um .... surreal? or to call the police asap cuz i mean cmon.

actually ykw, hang on. doing some flash self reflection on this.

i made this as a joke, like a morbid little teehee at myself, but i realized something. back then i recall the spaces i landed in weren't NEARLY as volatile about light character interpretations as they were now regarding the rpc. back then i also had more confidence in my writing, which made it easier to just. jump in and do stuff. i wasn't looking to make connections back then, either, they just came to me and it was nice (i'm still friends with quite a few ppl from when i was like!! 14 or 15!!)

nowadays though i feel like i've been beat down many a time because i met some really mean ass fucking people in the rpc (granted at times they also met me and i feel awful, but i don't have any issue with them regarding it since that was my own doing). like. i've made a lot of new friends but i've also lost people over the dumbest misunderstandings and major lack of communication between us.

and it's like, even if you aren't part of some drama that's going on over personal connections, i can't tell you the number of times i've seen people, ADULT PEOPLE, get hostile over the smallest things (INCLUDING people who don't want to mingle with them because their formatting and blogs are unreadable)- like if your character interpretation isn't perfect to them or in gen u get mass blocked/avoided and it's absolutely abysmal.

i'm not saying you HAVE to be friends with people and follow/rp with them obviously but like... it's been so discouraging seeing how catty, entitled and toxic people have become over lil fictional dudes, especially since that's why a lot of my friends and other people i've observed have left the rpc. i really, really miss when it was easier to reach out and not feel like you're accidentally going to stumble into a minefield or be scrutinized because you're not writing college level character shit.

that being said, please, please don't give up or think you're a shit writer because it's not how someone else would do it. i think learning how to write and understand a character is important sometimes given the scenario, and improvement is sometimes necessary as well, sure, but u know what's also important at the end of the day? just having fun and not beating yourself up constantly because you feel like it'll all amount to nothing and that you look like a weird loser. take the time to write crack/ooc/shitpost stuff with ur buds as well. go ape. stop giving a fuck. use the block button liberally if u gotta.

me, a young teen, writing classic megaman characters with not a lot about them other than some brief card info: IT'S FREE REAL ESTATE AND I'M HAVING SO MUCH FUN!! if you don't like it fuck off, i like my guy and so do... a lot of other people, apparently. nice!

me now at 29, wanting to do the same for underutilized/low info d2 characters: mmmng what if people don't like it.... what if people get together with their buddies and talk shit about how bad my interps are... what if i get blocked and avoided by people i don't even know but like their stuff :(
