Oblivious - a tyrus oneshot
Cyrus and TJ have a sleepover and as usual are oblivious idiots.
———
———
Cyrus has been over to TJ’s house before but this was the first time he’d ever seen his room. And it was so perfectly TJ.
The walls were painted a medium grey, except for the one behind TJ’s bed was a navy blue. TJ’s dresser was covered with various nicknacks ranging from some colorful pens to basketball trinkets and an array of sports trophies and medals. TJ’s bed was centered in the room and pushed up against the middle wall, to the right of the room was a window and to the left was the door that led out to the hallway.
“Sorry it’s such a mess,” TJ commented, kicking some of the spare shirts out of the way as they entered the room. “I tried to clean up before you got here but you’re too damn punctual.” TJ joked with a nervous laugh.
Cyrus didn’t mind the stray sweatshirts that scattered the floor, or the clutter that filled the top of the dresser. He wouldn’t change a thing about this room.
“It’s okay. I don’t mind it.” He laughed back as he continued to look around the room in amazement.
TJ’s face was turned a pale pink at the sight of Cyrus admiring his room. He paused for a moment just staring at the boy before him. Eventually, he shook his head slightly and jumped onto his bed.
“So, my mom’s making dinner which should be ready here pretty soon, and it’s probably too early for a movie anyways,” TJ paused unsure of what they could do for the next 10 minutes. A few ideas came to mind, but he couldn’t exactly suggest them.
Cyrus sat down opposite TJ and looked at him trying to come up with a few ideas of his own, unfortunately though, not much came to mind. That is until he noticed the keyboard he had over by the window.
“You play piano?” Cyrus scoffed in wonder. Was there anything TJ Kippen couldn’t do?
“Well, um, not really. I got it for christmas one year and just kinda, mess around from time to time.” TJ sputtered. It wasn’t a total lie, he did get the keyboard for christmas, and if messing around is defined by years worth of lessons, then it was a pretty truthful statement.
Cyrus turned to TJ. “Will you play something for me?” He asked with a quiet excitement.
TJ was about to respond when his mom called them down for dinner.
“I guess not.” TJ shrugged with an innocent smile and then proceeded to get up from the bed and head towards the door. “This is not over Kippen.” Cyrus smiled as TJ held the door open for the other boy to walk through first.
———
“This is amazing Mrs. Kippen!” Cyrus exclaimed as he twisted more pasta onto his fork.
“Thank you Cyrus, and please, call me Emily.” She smiled.
It was just Cyrus, TJ, and his mom that night. Amber was out with her friends and TJ’s dad was working late. Which meant that most of dinner was rather quiet, but the three of them didn’t seem to mind. Occasionally, Emily would ask Cyrus mundane questions about his family or school.
TJ couldn’t help but smile at the sight of his mom and Cyrus getting along. He expected the silence to be awkward, but instead it was rather comfortable, which was refreshing, in a way.
The three sat there enjoying their meal until an idea popped into Mrs. Kippens brain, causing a playful smirk to spread across her face.
“So, Cyrus... Do you have a girlfriend?” She asked rather casually before taking another bite of her food.
Cyrus choked on the pasta he just put in his mouth as TJ almost spit his water all over the table. Mrs. Kippen couldn’t help but chuckle at the two boys clearly becoming rather nervous.
“Um, well, no.” Cyrus sputtered, not really sure what else to say.
“Have you got your eye on anyone?” Mrs. Kippen prodded.
“Um,” Cyrus stole a quick glance at TJ, sure that no one had noticed. “I guess so...” He said as he looked from Mrs. Kippen to his plate.
But Emily noticed the flash of his eyes towards her son, and she smiled before changing the subject to another small talk point. She had all the information she needed.
But while Cyrus and Emily talked, TJ sat there silent, simply staring at the white table cloth. He had seen Cyrus’ eyes flicker, but that could’ve been a trick of the light, right? Even if not, that didn’t mean anything. He could’ve just been looking at him for reassurance, as the conversation was rather awkward. Nothing happened. Right?
TJ’s over analyzing was interrupted by his mother waving a hand in front of his face whilst calling his name. He snapped out of his daze to see Cyrus giggling at him along with an amused look on his mother’s face.
“Cyrus and I were just talking about how your basketball season is starting up soon.” His mother informed him.
TJ let his previous thoughts find their way to the back of his mind as he started rambling about basketball. A look means nothing. He wasn’t going to let it get to him.
———
“I’m so bored of movies! Let’s do something else.” Cyrus whined as he paused the Netflix original that they had been watching. It was 10:30 p.m. and he was growing irritable. Usually he’d be tired by this point in the night but the ice cream he and TJ had after dinner was coursing through his veins.
TJ chuckled at the pout on Cyrus’ face. “What do you want to do?” he asked.
Cyrus thought for a moment before an idea sprung to his mind.
“Let’s play truth or dare!” He said excitedly.
“Isn’t that usually a game for a group of people?” TJ pondered.
“Yeah, but really you only need two people.” Cyrus replied. “Come on please!” He begged as he moved to face TJ on the couch they were seated on.
TJ gave in with a reluctant smile. “Okay, okay! Truth or dare?”
“Truth, obviously.”
“Okay... What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?”
“Teej, we both know that list goes on for a while.”
“Okay, what about this week.”
“Well. I walked into a glass door a couple days ago.” Cyrus answered with ease. TJ looked at him, unsure of whether he should be concerned about the nonchalance of the statement. It was a situation that happened a lot more than Cyrus would like to admit, but he kept that to himself and moved on. “My turn. Truth or dare?”
“Dare.” TJ decided.
Cyrus thought for a moment before a smirk appeared on his face.
“I dare you to play piano for me.” He challenged, crossing his arms.
TJ let out a groan as he covered his face with his hands. “Why did I agree to this?” He mumbled through his palms.
“Can’t back out now.” Cyrus teased.
TJ sat still for a moment more before he got up and headed toward the front of his house. “Well come on!” He said as he turned back to see Cyrus still seated on the couch. The brown haired boy laughed and jumped up to follow.
They made their way to a room by the front entrance where a piano sat by a window with couches lining the walls. TJ took his spot on the piano bench with Cyrus on the couch behind him. He took a deep breath and then began to play.
Cyrus’ jaw hit the floor as he watched TJ’s hands dance across the keys with such elegant ease. He was amazing!
“Mess around from time to time” yeah right. Cyrus thought.
TJ finished playing and turned around to face his friend behind him, who’s mouth was still propped open. TJ winced. “That bad?”
“Are you kidding?” Cyrus scoffed. “That was spectacular! Why did you never tell me you could play piano?” Cyrus asked excitedly.
“It never came up.” TJ shrugged. “Anyways, it’s my turn. Truth or Dare?”
Cyrus just stared at the blonde for a moment, basking in a pool of wonderment and shock. Eventually he composed himself enough to choose, “Truth.”
“Okay. What’s something you’ve never told me, your biggest secret?” TJ asked.
Cyrus’ stomach dropped. “You know what, I’m feeling rather risky tonight I change my answer to dare.” He said quickly.
“Okay. I dare you to answer the question.” TJ answered with a sly smile. He watched as Cyrus seemed to grow rather nervous and he started to feel guilty.
“Cy, I’m just messing with you, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.” TJ said, voice now serious as he moved to sit next to Cyrus on the couch.
Cyrus let out a sigh. “It’s not that I don’t want to tell you, it’s just that...” He paused, trying to find the words for what he was feeling. “I don’t know how you’ll react.” He eventually said. “I don’t want you to hate me.”
“I could never hate you Cyrus. You can trust me.” TJ smiled softly.
He wasn’t sure what came over him, maybe it was the look on TJ’s face, or that damned smile, but what the hell.
“I’m gay.” He blurted out.
TJ was taken aback. “For real?”
Cyrus nodded. Maybe this was a bad idea...
“Me too.” TJ’s voice was a mix of uncertainty and excitement.
The two boys just sat there staring at each other for a moment. Until they both started laughing.
“Oh my god, no wonder you got all nervous when my mom asked about a girlfriend!” TJ laughed as he poked at Cyrus’ arms.
“Hey! For your information I did have a girlfriend once!” Cyrus giggles as he swatted TJ’s hands away.
“Ouch. I’m sure that went well.” The blonde boy joked.
“She was actually great! We’re still friends, I just was never into her like that.” Cyrus said in his (and Iris’s) defense.
“I never had an interest in girls.” TJ stated. “All my friends would always talk about them and I just never understood what all the fuss was about.”
“What made you realize?” Cyrus asked, curiosity glazing over his voice.
“I met this guy. When I first saw him it was like...” TJ paused, trying to put into words how it felt the first time he met Cyrus.
“It was like my body had been invaded by butterflies... and I didn’t really know what to do. It caught me off guard. Then me and him started hanging out more and everything my friends had said about girls finally made sense to me.” He finished. “What about you?”
“It was actually my first girlfriend, Iris, that made me realize it.” Cyrus laughed. “It sounds awful, but I remember the first time we kissed, it was so forced and it felt off. It was hearing Andi talking about Jonah that made me realize I felt all of those things too, just not for Iris.” He remembered back to all the drama from two years ago.
“You felt them about Jonah?” TJ asked, although he already knew the answer. Cyrus nodded in response.
“Huh. I guess Jonah Beck really is the hetero cure.” TJ laughed as he recalled Amber calling him that when she came out to him.
“Oh my god he is!” Cyrus couldn’t hold back his laughter. “That is single handedly the funniest thing I’ve ever heard!”
TJ stared in adoration at the boy next to him who was still laughing hysterically. “Yeah.” He chuckled quietly.
Cyrus’ laughter eventually died down, giving TJ a chance to ask, “So, do you still like him?” a nervous hint to his voice.
But the nerves went away rather quickly as Cyrus started laughing again. “No way. That crush is long gone.” He clarified.
“I met a guy too. It was kind of like you with the butterflies. We also got to hang out a lot more and it was around then I realized Jonah Beck was long gone from my heart.” Cyrus said dramatically as he placed a hand over his chest, earning a laugh out of TJ.
“So... who is this mystery man that caused your gay awakening?” Cyrus half joked as he looked at TJ. He was preparing to have his hopes let down as he realized they were soaring rather high at the moment.
“Yeah... I’m not gonna tell you.” TJ said letting that fake innocent smile back onto his face as he jumped up from the couch.
“Come on! That’s not fair!” Cyrus whined, once again causing TJ to laugh.
“Let’s just say, he’s cute and nice and smart and...” His voice softened when Cyrus stood up and looked him in the eye with a small smile on his face. “And he’s made me a better person.” He continued, his voice much softer than he intended. TJ silently thanked the darkness of the room for hiding the blush that was burning his face.
“Well. Whoever he is should be honored.” Cyrus said as the two of them turned to go back to the living room.
“What about you? Must be some guy to one up Jonah Beck.” TJ said, trying to hide any jealousy that was trying to leak into his voice.
“Yeah. He’s amazing. He makes me so comfortable and being around him is the best feeling in the world.” Cyrus gushed about the boy next to him. “He’s kind of oblivious, though.” He added, feeling suddenly rather brave. However, this new found confidence didn’t stop his cheeks from reddening at his own statement.
“Yeah. So is my guy. I try to flirt with him but he doesn’t seem to get the hint.” They arrived back at the living room and plopped onto the couch, just a little too close to each other.
“Why are boys such idiots.” Cyrus said, making a grab for the remote.
“And yet, so very cute.” TJ added as he playfully grabbed the remote from Cyrus’ grip.
“Hey!” The shorter boy exclaimed as TJ held it way out of his reach.
“Sorry Underdog, you know what they say. The taller gay gets the remote.” He teased.
“Literally no one says that!” Cyrus playfully swatted at TJ’s arm before quickly giving up on retrieving the remote. “You’re lucky I don’t feel like getting up again.” He said with joking annoyance.
The two boys giggled at each other as the movie started playing again.
They watched a few more movies and gradually ended up sitting closer together than ever before. Cyrus felt his eyelids growing heavy and in his tired state, rested his head on TJ’s chest, not caring if this gave him away.
As he drifted asleep he felt TJ put his arm around his torso and softly stroke his hair. He barely had time to register what was happening though, because soon enough he was out for the night.
———
“And we ended up cuddling all night!” Cyrus said enthusiastically while looking at his two best friends on his phone.
He recalled waking up to the smell of TJ’s mom making blueberry pancakes and wanting more than anything to never move from the position he was in. Everything about that moment was perfect. The way the blanket had created the perfect temperature, the warm smell of breakfast cooking in the next room, but most importantly, the way TJ held onto him.
They had somehow moved from their sitting up position to a laying down one, but when Cyrus woke up his head was still rested on TJ’s chest. The taller boy had an arm wrapped around Cyrus and was sleepily drawing circles into his arm. Cyrus could’ve stayed in that moment for the rest of his life and been perfectly content.
However, TJ, who had woken up around the same time as Cyrus, began to move. He slipped a pillow under Cyrus’ head as he shimmied from underneath him, still under the impression that Cyrus was asleep. TJ left the room and a few minutes later Cyrus sat up, his face red not only from laying on one side of his face all night, but also from remembering their late night game of truth or dare.
The memory made him smile as Andi and Buffy watched his through the phone.
“So are you two dating yet?” Andi asked excitedly
“What? No. We’re just friends. Didn’t you hear me, he likes another guy.” Cyrus said, confusion taking over his face.
“But you just said you guys cuddled all night?” Buffy interjected.
“Well yeah but friends cuddle all the time. It probably meant nothing to him.” Cyrus said, a twinge of disappointment coating his voice.
With that, he heard his mom call for him from downstairs.
“Sorry guys I got to go. See you at The Spoon later?” He asked.
The two girls agreed in unison as Cyrus said goodbye and hung up the phone.
———
TJ was sat on his bed doing his homework when he heard a knock on his door. Before he had a chance to shoe whoever it was away, Amber was walking in with an excited look on her face.
“So... How was your sleepover date with Cyrus!” She asked all giddy.
“First of all, it wasn’t a date. Second of all, it was nice.” TJ said, the last sentence came out softer as he looked back down at his papers to hide the roses blooming in his cheeks.
“Oh come on! I’m gonna need more details than that!” His sister pressed on.
Eventually he gave in and told her all about their truth or dare session and Cyrus falling asleep on him.
“Oh. My. God. THAT’S SO CUTE! When’s your first date?” Amber yelled excitedly.
“What are you talking about?” TJ said with genuine confusion.
“He obviously likes you back! You... did ask him out, right?” Amber said hesitantly.
“What? No! Didn’t you hear me, he likes someone else. Besides, friends cuddle all the time. It probably meant nothing to him. He was probably thinking about Mr. One-Upped-Jonah Beck.” TJ sighed
Amber stared at him, dumbfounded by how stupidly blind her younger brother was. She simply scoffed in amazement at the idiot she shared DNA with before she left the room.
———
Andi, Buffy, and Cyrus were all sat in their favorite booth at The Spoon when TJ walked in.
Cyrus felt his heart skip a beat at the sight of his friend. “Teej!” He called, unable to hide the excitement in his voice.
The blonde turned his head and his face immediately brightened at the sight of Cyrus.
“Underdog! What’s up.” He said as he gave Cyrus a high five, their hands lingering together a little longer than what’s considered “friendly”.
“Not much. What are you doing here?” The brown haired boy asked.
“Just getting lunch. I’m gonna order but I’ll be back.” TJ said. He turned to walk over to the counter but was quickly joined by Cyrus next to him.
“I’ll come with, we’re almost out of baby taters and Amber has a lot of customers today.” He babbled nervously.
The two approached the counter and ordered their food and waited up there while it was being prepared.
“They are so whipped.” Andi laughed.
“They’re so disgustingly adorable. How do they not realize how in love they are?” Buffy added, mock annoyance in her voice.
“How did we end up taking care of two oblivious, gay, idiots?” Amber said as she walked over to their table, eyeing TJ and Cyrus at the counter, who were so deep in conversation they didn’t even realize their food was ready.
“I’m sure they’ll figure it out soon.” Andi said, trying to sound hopeful. The three girls looked at each other and laughed.
“Yeah. We’ll see how that goes.” Buffy scoffed as they turned their heads back towards the two boys.
“just friends.” Yeah right.

Note
just found out that my friend watches and mack and i asked her what her favorite ship was. she said "i love cj! they are so cute" it took me a couple seconds to realize that she was referring to tyrus and i internally cringed so hard lol. but seriously what kind of ship name is cj??
I remember when Josh preferred to call Tyrus “CJ” lol. For one thing, it doesn’t even sound like a ship name and it would be a bitch to tag. There would be a bunch of other junk cluttering the “CJ” tag, I’m sure.

A tyrus swimming one shot??
SEND ME FIC PROMPTS
When TJ stepped outside that morning he thought the sky might never have been as blue as it was before. The day was sweltering, sun beating down on the world and creating heat waves that made the pavement ahead all wavy. He was grateful he didn’t have to walk anywhere, but even for the five minutes that he was perched on the porch to wait for the others to pick him up were nearly unbearable.
They head down to the lake in the beat up old pickup truck that Jonah had received for his birthday that year. It always made TJ laugh when he heard it coming, it was so loud and cranky you knew it was on its way before it was even in sight. He had no idea why anyone thought it was a good idea to have such a big truck in Shadyside, but it made him smile. They’d all hop into the back and hope they didn’t get pulled over because on days like this it just made more sense to carpool. Since the group was pretty big Walker would drive too. He’d go pick up Amber, Iris and Gus because as much as they all loved the truck they weren’t completely willing to die by cramming everyone in the back. Reed and Lester would take their bikes down because they could - TJ probably would have too if it weren’t for the excited way Cyrus looked at him when they were making plans.
It was the Fourth of July and the whole group planned to spend the day down by the water. They’d been planning it for a couple of months now, TJ knew for a fact that Cyrus had been stockpiling bags of marshmallows for the campfire, and it was all Buffy had been able to talk about the past few days. He’d been pretty excited himself but work after school and picking up extra credit was pretty exhausting so he hadn’t had much time to think about it. However, when Jonah pulled into the driveway he pushed all stressful thoughts from his mind and decided that today was a day for three things only; sunbathing, swimming, and copious amounts of junk food.
Obviously, they weren’t the only ones with similar plans, because when they arrived at the side of the was packed with cars. Fortunately, they’d anticipated that, and they surpassed the cluttered side of the lake and drove around to the side they knew would be less crowded. Most people wouldn’t bother going where they were because there weren’t toilets, but Reed had valiantly volunteered lifts around to the bathrooms when the girls needed them.
When they all tumbled out of the truck it wasn’t long before the others pulled up behind them. TJ watched in amusement as Marty and Lester both immediately stripped off their shirts and flopped down on the grass. At some point, somebody dug out a set of speakers and filled the air with poppy summer tunes. Cyrus laid out a blanket carefully and patted the spot next to him, indicating for TJ to sit down. He dug out the sunscreen instantly.
“I already put some on before we left,” TJ complained.
“Skin cancer is no joke,” Cyrus said seriously. “Shirt off, please.”
He sighed and made a show of rolling his eyes but did as he was told while the others snickered at them in the background.
“It’s like he’s your mom,” Reed laughed, then laughed harder when TJ flipped him off. He could pretend to be annoyed all he liked, but he had to admit it secretly made him happy to be cared about so much. Cyrus went through the same routine as nearly everyone else except Iris, who was just as prepared as him and lecturing the girls about taking care of themselves and didn’t relax until everyone was suitably protected and armed with a fresh bottle of water.
The afternoon stretched on for what felt like forever. They slipped in and out of the water, chicken fighting and doing handstands in the shallower part, then swimming out to see how far they could get before someone gave in and turned around. It was maybe the most fun he’d ever had in his life. It felt like a summer straight from the movies.
At one point TJ fell asleep only to be woken up half an hour later by Amber armed with glitter and nail polish. He sighed and let her paint his fingernails red, blue and white so he could “get in the spirit of the holiday”, stretching back and listening to Cyrus and Iris passionately discuss Komodo dragons.
When darkness started to fall late in the evening they pulled on extra layers of clothes (though they weren’t needed too much it was still warm) and dug out the blankets. Watching Jonah and Reed argue over how to start a fire, only for Iris to end up doing it instead, was maybe the funniest thing he’d witnessed all week. Cyrus draped an extra blanket around d his and TJ’s shoulders and leaned into his side, allowing TJ to slip an arm around his waist. They stayed like that as they roasted marshmallows. It was inevitable that Jonah would pull out his guitar but when he did TJ groaned teasingly. Marty prodded him until he agreed to play a shaky version of the national anthem, the others singing along as terribly as they could, and then Reed caused a fuss by announcing he’d brought fireworks.
Evidently, that was the moment Cyrus decided it was best to make a break for it. He leaned in and spoke low into TJ’s ear, sending shivers down his spine.
“You wanna go for a walk?”
TJ nodded and stood, holding a hand out to pull Cyrus up. He didn’t let go as they walked away. He could feel Buffy and Andi’s eyes on them as they went, but the rest of the group was distracted by the chaos of the fireworks. It would be at least half an hour before they had them all set up and ready to go, probably under the watchful eye of a concerned Walker. He chuckled to himself. He loved his friends but boy were they idiots sometimes.
He and Cyrus silently weaved their way through the thickening trees slowly, fingers still entwined, listening to the crickets chirp. Around them fireflies faded in and out of visibility, giving the world an almost magical atmosphere. Eventually, they came to another edge of the water. They could see the lake stretching out before them, lights flickering on the other side where other people had set up their own fires and barbecues. There was still a slight glow of light on the horizon from where the sun hadn’t completely finished its descent, but that hasn’t stopped the stars from starting to make an appearance.
“Nice night,” TJ commented inanely. Cyrus had been unusually quiet this evening. It seemed as though he may have been a little lost in his own head. TJ wondered what he was thinking about that had captured his attention so firmly.
Cyrus hummed in agreement, then dropped TJ’s hand abruptly and tugged his shirt over his head.
He stared at him, baffled. “What are you doing?”
“I’m going swimming,” Cyrus said simply, pulling off his shoes next. “You coming?”
“You’re insane,” he replied, shaking his head, but started stripping off himself and followed Cyrus into the water.
It has cooled down significantly since the sun had gone down, but it wasn’t cold enough to make TJ regret all his life choices yet so he took it as a win. The two of them swam lazily out too a deeper part of the lake and then stopped, flipping over to float on their backs. TJ stared up at the stat-dotted sky. In the distance, he could hear the faint sounds of raucous laughter and music playing. The crickets continued to chirp and the waves lapped gently at the shore. The whole night felt so serene. It was so beautiful. He was lucky to be alive.
He startled when he felt something touch his hand, turning his head to find Cyrus watching him with his own hand stretched out. TJ smiled and entwined their fingers once again.
“You okay?” he asked.
“I’m great,” Cyrus replied, shutting his eyes and leaning his head back. It didn’t sound like he was lying but there was an edge of something that TJ couldn’t identify to his voice. The thought of something troubling Cyrus troubled him, so he decided to distract him from his thoughts.
SPLASH!
Cyrus made an outraged noise, turning himself upright and wiping at his face. He huffed as TJ laughed.
“Trust you to ruin a nice moment,” he said accusingly, before splashing him right back.
It devolved fast from there. They flicked water at one another, wrestling rambunctiously and trying (maybe failing a little) not to choke on half the lake as they went. By the time they’d tired themselves out TJ’s sides were sore from laughter and he was completely out of breath. Around Cyrus, he found that was often the case. Nobody else brought him quite as much joy.
He didn’t realise how close their faces were together until he finished blinking water out from his eyes. They were only inches apart, Cyrus still clutching his shoulders, legs anchored around his waist.
“So I’ve been doing some thinking,” Cyrus said.
“A dangerous pastime.”
He flickered TJ on the ear and laughed. “Shut up.”
“Sorry, sorry. So you’ve been doing some thinking?”
He nodded. “About us.”
“Us?” TJ said in surprised.
The way Cyrus talked was like he was laying out a business proposal. It was almost endearing. “Yes. I’ve been thinking about us. We spend almost every day together, I know you like the back of my own hand and I know you know me just as well, and I realised the other day that with anyone else that would probably bother me because like… personal space, y’know? But with you it doesn’t.”
“So…”
“So I came to the conclusion I’m in love with you.”
For a moment the world stopped. TJ seriously considered the idea that maybe he’d drowned while they were wrestling and this is some weird side effect of the afterlife.
“Excuse me?”
“I’m in love with you,” Cyrus stated clearly.
Huh. There was no way that he could really misinterpret that. He didn’t know how to respond. It felt a little like his body and brain had shut down. All he could do was stare at Cyrus with his mouth gaping open like a fish.
The thing was… he’d been in love with Cyrus since they were fourteen years old. This as a fact he’d come to accept, paired with the obvious fact that Cyrus didn’t feel the same way. Apparently, he’d been wrong about that.
“Can you please say something?” Cyrus asked, a hint of worry to his voice. “It’s okay if you don’t feel the same way. I just thought I should let you know.”
There they were floating in a lake, the world around them suspended in time, and Cyrus Goodman was in love with TJ Kippen. A brief flash of annoyance hit him, did this mean that he could’ve been kissing Cyrus this entire goddamn time? Then that feeling gave way to one of excitement and realisation.
“Oh my God,” he said. “Oh my God. Of course, I feel the same way. I’ve been in love with you for years.”
“You have?!”
“Yes,” TJ rolled his eyes. “I’m pretty sure you’re the last to find out.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh.”
Before he could say anything else, Cyrus was pressing their lips together. The kiss was tentative and unnecessarily wet from the lake water but somehow it still managed to be perfect. Above them, fireworks exploded to life filling the sky with thousands of colours. They looked up and laughed. It was the perfect day.

Usually, Cyrus loved Halloween. He loved dressing up and getting free candy and cute, glowing jack-o-lanterns. What Cyrus didn’t like was the scary part of Halloween. The after-dark spooks that jumped out at him from behind buildings and in bushes. The horror movies that he bailed out of after the first minute. He didn’t like that part.
And that’s why he didn’t love this Halloween.
The usual Halloween get-together at the Mack house had turned into a horror movie marathon. Jonah and Buffy had decided that, since it was their first year of high school, they were all going to “grow up” and watch horror movies. Andi and Cyrus were not so keen on this plan but were dragged along by the promise of milkshakes and baby taters picked up from The Spoon by Bex. And, of course, Cyrus’s final condition for a horror movie marathon: TJ.
Honestly, Cyrus had thought it was going to be much more difficult to get TJ invited to the Halloween party. Instead, it went something like this:
“Andi, Buffy,” Cyrus said, leaning on the table at their booth in The Spoon. “I would like to invite TJ to the Halloween party.”
Buffy, of course, frowned. “Why?”
Cyrus sighed. “Because, Buffy. He’s my friend.”
Buffy raised an eyebrow. “Just your friend?”
Andi elbowed Buffy in the side, and the two exchanged a look. “Of course you can invite TJ, Cyrus,” Andi said, smiling.
So, now, Cyrus was anxiously sitting in the living room, waiting for TJ to arrive. He didn’t know why he was anxious -- after all, it was just TJ. It’s not like Cyrus had a crush on him or anything.
“Cyrus,” Buffy said, looking over at him from the other side of the couch. “What’s up? You look nervous.”
Andi shifted on the couch next to Buffy, turning to look at Cyrus. Jonah did the same.
“Are you nervous about watching the horror movies?” Andi asked, frowning. “I’ll admit, I’m not too excited about them, either.” She shot Buffy a look, but Buffy just grinned.
“The horror movies won’t even be that bad, honestly.” Buffy rolled her eyes. “And, besides, I doubt that’s why Cyrus is nervous.”
“I’m not nervous,” Cyrus said. “Not about anything. Not at all. Besides, if I was nervous, what would I even be nervous about?”
Buffy gave Cyrus a devilish smile. “I bet you’re nervous about--”
She was cut off by the sound of the doorbell. Cyrus’s head whipped around to look at the door. “Who’s gonna get that?” Cyrus asked.
Andi stood up. “I’ll get it. I bet it’s just some trick-or-treaters.”
She crossed the living room and walked to the front door. Cyrus watched as the opened the door and grinned at the person outside. “TJ! Come in!”
At the mention of TJ’s name, Cyrus’s heart did a little flip. He ignored it. He was not going to make a fool out of himself. Not today.
TJ came into the living room, Andi walking behind him. He looked at the group, giving them a half smile. “Buffy, Jonah. Hi.”
Then, he looked at Cyrus, and his face broke into a grin. “Underdog. Hey!”
The group all waved to TJ, Cyrus more than the others. He gave an enthusiastic, “TJ!” However, his nerves made the enthusiastic comment more of a squeak, and he immediately cringed at himself.
TJ walked over to the couch and gestured to the empty seat next to Cyrus. “Mind if I sit?”
Cyrus shook his head. “Not at all.”
Andi rejoined the group on the couch, and they all turned to look at the television.
“Well,” Buffy said. “It’s time to start our horror movie marathon.” She clapped her hands together and grinned manically at the group. “Where should we start?”
--
By the time they began the second movie, Cyrus knew he wouldn’t be able to sleep for weeks. Outside, it had begun to rain, which only made the whole experience creepier. They had turned off the lights in the living room in order to see the television better, and now Cyrus couldn’t tell if the dark shapes in the corner were furniture, or if they were crawling demons waiting to come to kill him.
He shifted in his seat and realized that he had been leaning against TJ. Not just slightly leaning against him, but full-on, TJ-should-have-noticed-this-by-now leaning. Cyrus quickly sat up, then focused on the movie playing on the television. He would not look over at TJ. He would just watch the movie.
Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw TJ looking at him. Now, he figured that TJ had known Cyrus was leaning against him. He was probably too polite to have said anything to Cyrus.
Cyrus was freaking out.
In his head, Cyrus was chanting Don’t make eye contact. Don’t make eye contact. Don’t make--
He glanced over at TJ, and their eyes met.
Cyrus turned back to the television so quickly he thought he would snap his neck, and he saw TJ do the same.
This was bound to be a long night.
Outside, a bolt of lightning flashed, illuminating the room for a brief second. Cyrus saw Andi jump in her seat. “I think the power’s going to go out,” she remarked.
Buffy looked over at Andi and made a face. “It’s not going to go out. You’re just trying to get out of watching this movie.”
“I’m with Andi,” Cyrus said. “I think we should turn off the movie and go find some flashlights, y’know, just in case the power does go out.”
Buffy turned and glared at Cyrus. “Now I know that you’re just trying to get out of the movie.”
Cyrus shrugged. “Can you really blame me?”
Buffy rolled her eyes and turned back to the television. “Whatever. The power isn’t going to go out.”
Just then, a clap of thunder shook the house, and the television turned off. Cyrus turned around and saw that the lights in the kitchen had gone out.
“Buffy,” TJ said, grinning at Buffy. “What were you just saying?”
Everyone laughed except Buffy, who just scoffed.
The room around them was even darker than it had been before. If any demon was going to try to kill them, now would be its chance. Cyrus pulled his feet up onto the couch, not wanting to get dragged across the floor by some paranormal being.
“We should go try to find some flashlights. We don’t know how long the power will be out for,” Andi said.
“Okay,” Buffy said, standing up. “Where are the flashlights?”
Andi paused for a moment, thinking. “Well, we have some in a box upstairs. We also have a few big flashlights down in the basement.”
“Wait,” Jonah interjected. “You have a basement?”
Andi made a face. “Yeah. Didn’t you know that?”
Jonah shook his head, then realized Andi probably couldn’t see it. “Nope.”
“Well, then,” Buffy spoke up. “I think Cyrus should go down to the basement and get the flashlights. The rest of us can look around up here for flashlights.”
“What?” Cyrus asked. “Why me?”
Buffy shrugged. “You were the first person that came to mind.”
“That’s not fair!” Cyrus said indignantly. “I don’t want to get killed in Andi’s basement. I’m not going down there!”
“I’ll go with you, Cyrus,” TJ said from beside him.
Cyrus paused, contemplating, then spoke, “Alright. I’ll go.”
Buffy clasped her hands together. “Perfect! Now, Andi, you should probably tell them where the basement is so they don’t get lost.”
Cyrus tried to focus as Andi gave him the directions to get down to the basement, but he was torn between not wanting to be murdered in the basement and being happy that TJ volunteered to go with him.
Apparently, as Cyrus was thinking, Andi had finished talking. Now, Buffy was shooing them off the couch, and they were headed to the basement. TJ was muttering Andi’s directions out loud as they walked, which Cyrus couldn’t help but find adorable.
“Okay, we turn left here, and there should be a door leading down to the basement.” TJ reached out and felt for a door. “I think there’s a door here.” He fumbled for the doorknob, and Cyrus heard the door swing open with a creak.
“There’s a staircase leading down to the basement,” TJ said, stepping forward. “Don’t fall down the stairs, okay? I wouldn’t want to be alone in the basement.”
“I’ll try my best,” Cyrus said, and, though he couldn’t see it, TJ smiled at him.
They walked down into the basement, carefully making their way down the stairs. There were a few small windows lining the top of the basement’s walls, letting in a faint light from outside. Cyrus stayed behind TJ as they stepped down onto the concrete floor, thinking that TJ could probably fight off a poltergeist better than he could. “Alright,” TJ said, “let’s find the flashlights and get out of here.”
They walked into the middle of the room. Cyrus squinted at the cluttered shelves in front of him, looking for the yellow flashlights that Andi described. TJ searched the shelves next to him.
TJ crouched down slightly to look at one of the bottom shelves, and let out a triumphant “ah-ha!”
“Did you find them?” Cyrus asked, looking down at the shelf.
“I think so,” TJ said.
Just as TJ reached out to grab one of the flashlights, the door to the basement slammed shut. Cyrus jumped backward, knocking into the shelf behind him.
“What was that?” Cyrus asked, only slightly terrified.
TJ let out a chuckle. “It was just the door, Cyrus. It was nothing to be scared of.”
“Sorry,” Cyrus muttered. “I guess those movies made me a little skittish.”
“Do you need to hold my hand?” TJ asked, teasing Cyrus slightly.
Before he realized it was a joke, Cyrus blurted out, “yes.”
The two boys fell quiet, and Cyrus felt himself turning red, which, luckily, TJ couldn’t see. Cyrus knew he had just messed up big time. There was no coming back from this. TJ was probably weirded out now, and would probably never talk to Cyrus again.
Then, Cyrus felt a hand slip into his. Not realizing it was TJ, Cyrus jumped, let out a scream, and jerked his hand away.
TJ just laughed. “Cyrus, calm down. It’s not a demon, I promise.”
Cyrus let out a small laugh. “Oh. Right.”
In the dim light coming in from the basement window, Cyrus saw TJ hold out his hand. “Let’s try that again,” TJ said.
Slowly, Cyrus reached out and placed his hand in TJ’s. He felt the other boy shift his hand slightly, then laced their fingers together.
Cyrus almost passed out.
“Since it seems like we’ve got some time to spare,” TJ said, “There’s something I need to tell you.”
Cyrus felt his heart speed up. “What?”
Just as TJ opened his mouth to talk, the door to the basement swung open with a bang. Cyrus screamed again and practically dove behind TJ for cover. A flashlight beam cut across the basement floor, and footsteps began to descend down the dark staircase.
Buffy wasn’t exactly surprised when she entered the basement and saw TJ and Cyrus standing together. In fact, she almost laughed when she saw Cyrus cowered behind TJ and TJ with a smile on his face and his hand still holding Cyrus’s hand.
“TJ, Cyrus, stop fooling around and get the flashlights. Hurry up. We’ve been waiting for you.” Neither of them could see the knowing smile on Buffy’s face as she spoke.
“Sorry,” TJ said. “We just got a little scared.”
“Right,” Buffy said. “Just...get the flashlights and come upstairs.”
She turned around and walked back out of the basement. The moment she was gone, TJ turned to face Cyrus and let go of his hand. “I guess we need to get the flashlights now.”
Cyrus held up a hand. “Wait, TJ. What were you going to say before?”
TJ paused and looked down at the ground, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “I was going to say, uh…” he trailed off, glancing over at Cyrus. “Happy Halloween!”
TJ quickly moved past Cyrus, grabbing the flashlights off the shelf. Cyrus, meanwhile, was giving TJ an incredulous look. “That’s what you were going to tell me? Really?”
TJ made a face. “Yes?”
Cyrus frowned. “I don’t believe you.”
“You don’t?” TJ asked. “I thought I was pretty convincing.”
Cyrus rolled his eyes. “You weren’t.”
The two of them stood there, looking at each other in silence. Before he had the chance to stop himself, Cyrus moved forward and kissed TJ.
In the brief second that their first kiss happened, the power flickered back on. Cyrus could hear the faint sound of his friends cheering upstairs, and as he pulled away from TJ, he started to laugh.
“Guess we didn’t need the flashlights,” he said.
TJ looked down at the flashlights in his hands, then laughed. “Guess we didn’t.”

If you feel inspired, tyrus + discovering a shared hidden hobby/passion?
I read this and my brain went wild with possibilities but the only one I actually used was sharing an actual human person lmao(Also I just finished writing yesterday’s 5+1 fic and my brain is genuinely melting)
TJ dropped his house keys on the table next to his front door, holding it open for his boyfriend, who filed inside, looking around in wonder.“Anyone home?” he called out, his voice echoing around the house, only to be greeted with silence. “Guess not. Sorry it’s so small,” TJ apologized quickly, glancing around at the tiny house.“I like it,” Cyrus assured him, crouching to pet the cat winding around his ankles. “Who’s this?”“That’s Max. His sister Dani is around here somewhere,” TJ said fondly. “You named your cats after Hocus Pocus?” Cyrus asked, smiling.“In our defense, Amber and I were very young,” TJ said, picking up Max and scratching him behind the ears while he led Cyrus down the hall to his room. He nudged the door open with his shoulder, setting Max on his bed where Dani was already curled into his pillows.“Your room is… Not what I’d expect,” Cyrus admitted, turning in a slow circle.“How so?” TJ asked, sitting down on his bed carefully, shifting away from sitting on Max.“I don’t know, everything is so light and clean. I expected basketball posters held up with like three thumbtacks and a wad of gum,” he joked, causing TJ to elbow him gently in the ribs.“Psh, I could never pull that off in this household,” TJ said, absentmindedly putting books back on his bookshelf. “Amber would sneak in and clean it in my sleep, which she actually did once when we were seven, mind you.”“Fair enough. What’s it like having a twin sister? I always wanted one when I was little,” Cyrus asked, walking over to the record player in the corner and raising an eyebrow at the apparent lack of actual vinyls. “Oh, it has its ups and downs,” TJ said, pointing to the rows of crates, all holding books and vinyls, under his bed. “In some ways, it kind of sucks that we’re just stuck with each other. But on the other side of that argument, we’re also best friends, no matter what. I guess when we were little, it really sucked because we hated each other with a passion. But we grew out of that, and now it’s just really cool. However, she insists that the twelve minutes between she and I being born were the best twelve of her life, and I think she’ll always stand by that.”“Well of course, she was the favorite for twelve whole minutes.” Cyrus crouched, pulling out one of the many wooden crates under his boyfriend’s bed, rifling through the vinyls.“Exactly,” TJ agreed with a chuckle, nodding as he pulled out a second crate from under his bed, swapping it for the one Cyrus had. “Here, these are my favorites.”“You have like a thousand records,” Cyrus marveled, picking up an old Queen album and flipping it over in his hands.“And three thousand books, I know,” TJ finished his boyfriend’s thought for him, circling to the other side of his bed and pulling out no less than seven crates, all overflowing with books.“How on Earth did you find the money for all this? You work a minimum wage job, and insist upon giving most of your paycheck to your mom for bills or groceries- a very sweet gesture, but not one that leaves you with much money,” Cyrus asked, confused.“There’s a used book and record store 20 minutes out of town,” TJ explained. “I take the bus every Saturday, and buy as many as I can. I would buy my records at the Red Rooster, but there’s no way I can afford 30 bucks a record, so I usually find the ones I want there, make a list, then hunt them down at Crumpled Pages.”“Crumpled Pages?”“The book and vinyl store,” TJ clarified. “I’ve been going since I was eight. I used to have to sneak away from the library after my mom dropped me off every Saturday, back when she didn’t want me riding the bus alone. Every single employee knows me by name and favorite genres.”“Wait but today is Saturday?”“Yeah, but, and don’t tell Tolstoy or Gogol I said this, you’re more important than books,” TJ said, leaning across the bed to kiss Cyrus.“We could go to your beloved bookstore right now?” Cyrus asked, putting the crates back where he found them. “I don’t have to be home for a few hours.”“Oh! Are you sure? I know your ideal Saturday isn’t exactly taking a bus to Crawford for some books and vinyls.”“No, I want to see your special store!” Cyrus insisted, squeezing TJ’s hand. “It sounds like fun!”“Okay, if you say so,” TJ shrugged, taking Cyrus’s hand.“Yay!” TJ grinned, pulling his boyfriend down the hall.“I’m happy if you are, Underdog.”
“This is us,” TJ nudged his boyfriend gently, pointing out the window with a smile.“Cool!” Cyrus exclaimed, standing up as the bus rolled to a stop. TJ chucled, jogging off the bus with a quick ‘thank you’ to the bus driver, before pausing to intertwine his fingers with Cyrus’s.“Come on,” TJ said gently, smiling at how adorable his boyfriend was. “It’s just a few blocks this way.”The couple walked slowly, in perfect synchronicity, their hands swinging gently between them, chatting casually. For once, everything seemed right in the world. This was the first time Cyrus had felt so at peace since he was 12 and his aunt was getting married. There had been a moment at the wedding, when he and Buffy and Andi were sitting alone at a table, talking about their science project or something equally mundane, when he realized these two would be his best friends until the day he died. That they could spend hours talking about anything in the world, and never get tired of each other. Of course, the moment quickly dissolved into a debate on the validity of Pluto as a planet, but it was that moment that he decided he’d follow either of them to the ends of the Earth (or to Pluto, which he insisted was indeed a planet [“Just because it’s small, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be a planet!”], science be damned).“What are you thinking about?” TJ asked, looking down at his boyfriend, who was clearly deep in thought.“Well,” Cyrus started with a chuckle. “My aunt Edna’s wedding, actually.”“Your aunt Edna’s…”“Wedding, yeah,” Cyrus laughed, looking back and forth between crossing the street.“Wh-why?” TJ asked. “We’re literally on a date, Underdog.”“I swear, it’s actually a compliment that I’m thinking about her wedding,” Cyrus defended, following TJ as they turned a corner. “How?” TJ asked, laughing warmly.“That was the night Buffy, Andi and I stopped being best friends and started being attached at the hip. I loved that night.”“Fair enough,” TJ conceded with a shrug.“Wow, I just realized literally all I talk about with you is my friends, I’m sorry,” Cyrus apologized.“It’s fine, Underdog,” TJ assured him. “You three are a package deal.”“What do you mean?”“Cyrus. Our first kiss was literally in Andi’s grandparents’ living room at their Christmas party.”“Point taken,” Cyrus nodded, following TJ into Crumpled Pages when TJ held the door open for him. “Whoa.”“Yeah, it’s kind of cluttered, but their stuff is the cheapest around,” TJ reasoned, taking Cyrus’s hand yet again, and leading him through the store, winding through overflowing bookshelves and boxes of vinyls.“Thomas!” A lady Cyrus could only assume was the owner of the store appeared out of nowhere, sweeping TJ into a hug.“Addie, it’s only been a week,” TJ protested, his voice strained by the strength of the hug.“A week is much too long, Thomas,” TJ grimaced at the use of his full first name, desperate to change the topic before Cyrus brought it up.“Addie, this is my boyfriend, Cyrus Goodman,” he said quickly, pulling Cyrus in front of him. “Underdog, this is the owner of the store- and subsequently pretty much my second mother- Adelaide.”“I will be circling back to the topic of 'Thomas’ later,” Cyrus hissed to TJ, holding out a hand to Adelaide. “It’s lovely to meet you.”“Goodman?” Adelaide asked excitedly, taking his hand and shaking it. “Are you related to Leslie Goodman?”“Yeah, that’s my mom. Do you know her?” Cyrus asked, cocking his head slightly.“You’re Leslie Goodman’s son?” Adelaide asked, stepping back to look him up and down. “Oh, come here, sweetie!” She swept him into a warm hug, tears coming to her eyes. Cyrus looked at TJ confusedly as Adelaide cried into his shoulder, but his boyfriend could only shrug, his eyes wide. “Your mother and I were best friends in high school and college! How is she?”“Wait you’re my aunt Adelaide? She talks about you all the time!” Cyrus said, smiling as Adelaide wiped tears from her eyes.“Oh gosh, I can’t believe Leslie Goodman has a son!” Adelaide exclaimed, hugging Cyrus once more.“Actually, she’s pregnant, too. It’s a girl,” Cyrus informed her. “Oh my gosh! Let me get my phone, I’ll call her right now!” Adelaide rushed away to the back of the store, leaving Cyrus and TJ standing in between two bookshelves, watching after her. “You knew my aunt Adelaide this whole time?”“I guess so,” TJ shrugged. “I had no idea.”“…And your name is Thomas?” Cyrus asked, chuckling.“Thomas James,” TJ grumbled. “Please don’t make fun of me!” Cyrus shook his head, wrapping his arms around TJ’s neck.“I like it.”

Under the Influence
Under the Influence is a project that is entirely based upon independent work from myself as a graphic artist student. The final major project allows me to work by the inspiration of what I am purely interested in, in addition to using my interests to helping me develop my artistic abilities. This project depends on exploration and experimentation throughout.
What do I need to do?
I need to set myself a project proposal which will discuss within it a series of ideas I am considering to develop, before choosing a final idea to delve deeper into and explore.
I must make my own primary and secondary sources of research, based on whatever my final project will be after my proposal.
Set myself a timetable of all the activities I will go ahead with after choosing my final project idea. This will include setting out time to do my own primary and secondary research, making a springboard of my ideas and ultimately showing my ideas through a presentation.
Create a list for references and a bibliography to keep track of all the sources I have researched for my project.
Who/or what has inspired me?
Nocholas marlet is a character designer and has contributed in animated works such as the How to Train your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda franchises. He mixes organic shape with geometry in a way that makes his characters look, at times,  stylistically real. They are easy to identify as he picks up particular traits from animals and mixes them into the overall design (e.g. In Kung Fu Panda, the animals are obviously anthropomorphic, but have a sense of being their true feral representatives through design and mannerisms, as well as fighting choreography based off kung fu styles of whatever creature they are.) to give off a natural - though abstract - appeal. They work practically as well as aesthetically, for although they are animals, Nicholas Marlet has had some freedom to make the natural designs really stand out for creative benefit for the story/s.
Tyrus Wong was a concept artist for Disney films back in the early years of the animation studio`s growth. He worked on character designs for Bambi, as well as setting the overall look for the ethereal backgrounds in the film. I like Tyrus Wong`s work as it makes nature look more than what we`d expect. He gives off a magical vibe to his art, as though the backgrounds themselves play a role in the film and have more meaning to them rather than just being a plain forest or field. There is character where the audience doesn`t see it straight away, and I love how the background provide a kind of narrative structure throughout Bambi`s life. I may consider using Wong`s work as my inspiration for my project, to provide a character where people wouldn`t expect it, looking at a deceiving subject in the middle.
Douglas Carrel is a newly found inspiration I had discovered at the start of this year. He is a fantasy character designer and illustrator who is largely known for drawing illustrations for Dugald A. Steer’s Dragonology series, drawing dragons with a marvellous mixture of realism and characterisation and making each and every mythical species individual and full of personality; whether it be sly, cunning, charming or playful. It would be very easy to believe that the dragons are real due to the immense detail he puts into his drawings, but they are not so cluttered and are levelled with enough detail to still be pleasing to the eye of fantasy enthusiasts. Some of Steer’s books are laid out almost as though they’re field guides ( For example, ”Drake’s Comprehensive Compodium of Dragonology”) and go into a very thorough amount of depth about dragons all over the world, how to tell each species apart, how to track them, what their lifestyles are like, as well as the dangers of associating with them and even learning their own language that Steer made up, among many, many other subjects explored in the books. While there is a lot of content, the books are very intriguing and fun to read in addition to marvelling at Douglas’ plentiful illustrations. It is Dugald A. Steer who has inspired me to consider making a field guide for my own fantasy creatures, but of what I have yet to decide.
