Telltale signs that hint at a new tyre Purchase: Over time, the tires of a car have several chances to wear out. When the vehicle owner is unaware of the warning bells, potential risks can subject to damages and accidental mishaps. While bad tyres can be hazardous in good weather conditions, they may pose a catastrophic result to drivers and travelers too. Bikepacking the Hebridean Way - Part 4 - North Uist to Harris via Berneray
Read: Part 3
That morning met us with beautiful sunshine but when I woke up I couldn't really see that well out of my right eye. When I took a photo of my face it was because my entire face was swollen and my lip looked like I'd taken a right-hook the night before! It was blistering and swollen and my lip ring wasn't helping (although I can't actually remove it really). Have to admit I felt a bit sorry for myself and my lip was really sore in the wind; of which there was plenty!
We left our campsite for the night and I was a bit sad about that. It was a lovely location and while a rest day would have been nice it probably would be better to have one in a place with more resources. We originally planned to have a rest day in Tarbert on Harris but we were aware that the current clear weather we were enjoying was only going to last a few more days so that applied a little more pressure to keep riding while the weather was with us...although the wind was against us really. So we traced our path back to the Hebridean Way route, via the sandy paths amongst the dunes, over a section of beach, and across a little beach stream; one we took our shoes and socks off to cross.
Today we planned to head to Berneray and then make the ferry crossing over to Harris. The ride over to Berneray was beautiful and as it's accessible via a land causeway we arrived on the island ready to cross to Harris. As we arrived we discovered that the earlier ferry had been delayed due to fog so we took note of the delayed timetables and headed down the road to find some lunch. It turned out that Berneray Shop and Bistro was just around the corner so we arrived there, rather "sun-kissed", and headed inside for a break from the heat. I had brought factor 50 "children's" suncream with me but I didn't expect it to be this hot! The bistro was really lovely and looked an amazing place for dinner as well as lunch. Another couple of cyclists we'd seen over the last few days were two women who we'd said hello to at various points—mostly us riding by and then them passing us again when we stopped to fix a puncture. They were staying to explore Berneray and catching the later ferry but we decided to take the next crossing instead. After all, it was delayed and so we had plenty of time! We watched the ferry pass by to the port although we knew it would be setting off late so we ordered cake too, and another cuppa. We then thought it would probably be best to head to the ferry so we rolled around, full of lunch, to see the boat sailing away from us! They were delayed but decided to make up the time by leaving almost as soon as they arrived. Ah well, we got to explore Berneray!
We headed to the west beach which was stunning! I did find a sheep's skull which I thought would look really cool on the handlebars of my bike but I thought it's probably best to leave it where I found it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The others decided to ride up the beach and around but I had a hankering to look at the boats in the harbour; also I was really hot.
Tumblr media
So we agreed to meet around at the ferry for the next crossing. When we arrived at the ferry terminal we met the two women again and they said they thought we might have missed the ferry and saw us on the beach anyway.
I found another Hebridean Way route marker so stuck my finger into the Berneray hole.
Tumblr media
The ferry crossing was really peaceful and we arrived into a calm and sheltered Leverburgh on Harris. On the ride up to Horgabost we had our third puncture of the trip—really just a continuation of the first two—so a tube was inserted into the leaky tyre and we rode on. As it turned out there was no sealant left in the tyre. If you see a faint white trail up the Hebridean Way then that might have been us!
That morning I'd managed to score us some spots in a lovely campsite at Horgabost so I was really very excited to have a shower and wash my clothes. As it turned out there was masses of space in this campsite so it wasn't really the accomplishment I thought it was. In fact pretty much every site we visited had plenty of room for bike/backpackers. The site was absolutely beautiful and, most importantly, the showers were decent! They did take pound coins to operate although as I arrived in the shower block clutching my shiny coin the shower already had ÂŁ1.41 on it! SCORE!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It actually hadn't been that windy for the ride around the bottom of Harris so at least we'd had a bit of a break for the day, but the next few days would be a lot more exposed on Lewis.
Tomorrow we were going to make for Tarbert although we were conscious that there might be limited options for food between Tarbert and Calanish so we decided to do that 90km ride but stop off in Tarbert en route. I was excited to see Tarbert because I'd been following the story of the Harris distillery for years and tomorrow I'd get the chance to actually visit!
Another shower, some Vaseline on my lip, and some Scotch (although it did sting my lip, it was worth it), then bed. Mostly to avoid the midgies. ;)

We recently visited Canada and went on a breathtaking Pacific Northwest road trip, taking in Vancouver, Sun Peaks, Seattle and a few other small destinations in between. The journey was absolutely magnificent and merits sharing in the hope of inspiring you to book a flight, hire a car and take off on your own Pacific Northwest road trip. Use the Expedia planner below to check out the cost of hotels and flights.
Pacific Northwest road trip
Trans-Canada Highway: Vancouver to Sun Peaks via Kamloops
The Trans Canada highway is 7,821 km of tarmac connecting the west coast of Canada with Newfoundland in the east. We travelled just 200 miles from Vancouver, into the mountains north of Kamloops and it was utterly stupendous. Snow covered mountains, pine clad valleys, glacial lakes, frozen waterfalls and rippling rivers create a smorgasbord of views to feast on.
Every visitor to Canada should make a road trip on this epic highway!
Vancouver False Creek at dawn
Sun Peaks to Harrison Hot Springs
On our return trip from Sun Peaks to Harrison Hot Springs (well worth a detour for these views alone) the temperature increases from minus 14 to 5. A whole 19 C change in just a few hours. I’m constantly in awe of the huge peaks and river strewn valleys.
Fraser River in the sunshine
Crossing the Fraser river is a site to behold. Glacial waters stretch languidly to the horizon, surrounded by snow-clad banks and dramatic mountain peaks beyond. Just a day later, how things have changed as the river is barely visible from the bridge due to heavy snowfall. We stop to snap some pictures of the bridge in the gloom but it’s a far cry from the glistening blue of the previous day.
Fraser River in the snow just one day later
Harrison Hot Springs to Seattle via the US border
From Harrison, the land descends into farming land as we head towards Vancouver. The snowfall is so heavy, we can barely see. With poor visibility and heavy traffic speeds drop substantially, extending the length of our journey significantly. Please bear this in mind if you are crossing the border to head for the airport.
Harrison Hot Springs at sunset
The positive news is that drivers in Canada are exceptionally polite and sensible so we didn’t have to contend with crazy drivers as well.
Driving conditions on the Trans Canada Highway
Crossing the border
As you approach the border signs indicate the waiting times for the various border crossings. I’m starting to have serious doubts that we will make it to Seattle by this point however, considering how bad the roads are.
Sadly, our border employee clearly doesn’t like the look of us. He frostily tells us to park up and head into the customs building. We nervously enter, to receive a thirty minute interrogation. As the officer closely examines each of my passport pages, particularly focussing on my Middle Eastern stamps, I feel my blood pressure rising. Questions are coming quick and fast
A U.S interrogation
‘How can we afford to travel so much?
What jobs do we have that pay for so much travel?
What are we doing in Seattle?
Who are we visiting?
How do we know them?
Are we taking them anything?
Have we been on vacation in Canada?
Where are we flying from?
When?
Where are we staying?’
It goes on for what seems like an eternity, and honestly I just want to tell them to mind their own bloody business.
The third degree is frankly terrifying. We know we have done nothing wrong, but we still end up feeling like naughty children. US border staff are clearly taught to be incredibly intimidating.
Anyway, we eventually hear the comforting sound of a stamp in our passports and sigh with relief. The officer then rapidly changes into a chatty, friendly guy who seems curiously interested in my blog, whether I earn money or get sponsored stays. We practically leg it to the car, determined to get out of there before they change their mind.
On a plus note, once we successfully enter the States, the weather eases. The snow turns to rain and the temperature rises. Before long, the sun even makes an appearance.
Washington State, USA
The route between the border and Seattle is typical USA with mega malls lining the highway, interspersed with stretches of wilderness. Mounts Baker and Rainier beyond can occasionally be seen peeping through the trees and our excitement levels increase as we reach Everett, home of The Boeing Factory (we wrote about the best tour I’ve ever done there in a separate post).
Seattle to Snoqualmie
The short journey from Seattle to Snoqualmie is stunning and makes me seriously envious of my friends living in Seattle. Just a few miles from the city, we cross shimmering lakes with mountains glistening in the distance. Yet, Snoqualmie is a world apart, with a quaint western high street and an intriguing railroad museum in town.
Seattle by night
The piece de resistance is of course, the Snoqualmie Falls, a 268 ft waterfall cascading over a steep cliff. There are a variety of trails you can walk in the area, although many are not clear in winter.
Snoqualmie falls
Snoqualmie to Vancouver
Leaving the mountains, the land turns into arable farming pasture, and as we approach Vancouver, we are once again bowled over by how incredible this city is. It is literally surrounded by white capped mountains, glistening in the sunset. Reflections shimmer in the numerous waterways, from lakes to rivers, bays and sounds.
Pacific Spirit Regional Park, Vancouver
The return border crossing is particularly uneventful and considerably less hostile. In no time, we are back in Canada and dropping our car at the airport. By the way, if you want to take advantage of the considerably more attractive shopping prices in Canada, there is a MacArthur Glen Designer Outlet immediately next to the airport. Ensure you allow enough time to indulge, should you want to do any last minute shopping.
Things you need to know for a Pacific Northwest road trip
Car hire warning
Beware, conditions change fast on this road and you should ensure that you hire a suitable car. I booked a tiny car, and the employee at the rental company laughed at us when we explained our plans. It was an expensive mistake, as we had to pay an additional ÂŁ500 to upgrade to an SUV equipped with winter tyres. Seriously, do not make our mistake, as the roads were at times terrifying. I would have been a stressed out mess had we left the airport with the vehicle we originally planned to hire.
Weather conditions
For weather conditions, you can check the local radio stations and online apps. Our hotel, at the Harrison Hot Springs, also had a road update service providing details of any issues on surrounding roads. If in any doubt, I would recommend checking with locals in your hotel. We Brits are simply not accustomed to these weather conditions and we were certainly naive about how quickly conditions could change.
Harrison Hot Springs lake at sunset
On our journey from Harrison Hot Springs to Seattle, we experienced horrendous snow and poor visibility which melted into rain at the border. Shortly after, we were greeted by blue skies, only to experience further torrential snow five minutes later. The weather is far from predictable in this region.
Plan stops carefully
Other than the warnings about car type and weather, it pays to plan your stops carefully. This highway is not like the UK with regular service stations. It can be over 100 miles between petrol stations, although there are plenty of rest stops with toilet blocks. These rest stops however, often have no other facilities, so be sure to bring snacks and water.
A rest stop on the Trans Canada highway
Also, it would be sensible to have plenty of warm clothing with you. We saw the road get rapidly snow covered on our return from the mountains and major accidents could leave you spending long periods in your car where you will quickly get cold if you need to preserve fuel. We saw a huge truck jackknifed on the highway, and have to assume that was an experienced driver (unlike us!)
Why take a Pacific Northwest road trip
Despite these hazards, this is one of the most stunning road trips I’ve taken. With glaciers, forests, lakes, mountains, and volcanoes, this part of the world is just waiting for you to explore it. Here’s some more photos to tempt you.
North Bend, Washington State
This may be familiar to Twin Peaks fans!
Snoqualmie
Snoqualmie Falls and some selfie taker!
Harrison Hot Springs lake just off the Trans Canada highway
Frozen water at Harrison Hot Springs
Highway between Kamloops and the US border
Sun Peaks village
Hiring a car and taking a Pacific Northwest road trip is a great way for you to explore nature and sis over smaller places off the beaten track.
Prepare to be wowed on a breathtaking Pacific Northwest road trip We recently visited Canada and went on a breathtaking Pacific Northwest road trip, taking in Vancouver…

Back On Track: Cycling The Pacific Coast Highway
I did something unthinkable this week. Something so against the fibre of my very being that it makes me shudder to even say it. Come in close, because I’m going to whisper it… I got a bus. In fact, I got two buses. Faced with a choice between a shorter inland route directly to Reno (meh) or getting back on the original planned coastal route via San Francisco (wahoo) - I opted for the latter. And, rather than drill myself with 100 mile days to catch up, I came over all sensible. Fancy that?
THE OREGON COAST, AT LAST
From Portland I threw Boudica on a bus South to Eugene, where it was just 66 miles to the coast, I hopped off and did what the Pet Shop Boys told me to do. I went West. To the coastal town of Florence.
I’d been looking forwards to meeting The Pacific for over a week now, and in my head it was to be a spectacular affair. Dashing ocean views, sunshine, Highway 101 sweeping dramatically close to cliff tops - perhaps even a light spattering of fireworks. Alas, when I found the 101 it was foggy, spitting (not even real rain) and I couldn’t see head nor tail of the ocean. Had I ridden the wrong way?
It had been an early start, and I decided that I at least deserved pancakes and so rolled into a little cafe. There I met Dave and Ron, who, clearly bedazzled by the Pink bike, asked me to pull up a pew. They shouted me brekkie with a side order of conspiracy theory chat and Ron shared his ‘rule of thumb’ (complete with amputated thumb, naturally). “Be patient, or become a patient he said.” With that I was gone. Down highway 101, past the insanely beautiful and quite surreal Oregon Sand dunes and on the 50 miles to catch bus number 2.
THE COASTAL EXPRESS
Bus number 2 'The Coastal Express’ was a bit of a gamble. It was the kind of bus who’s website was in different sized Comic Sans, included a photo gallery of 'Mike at the wheel’ and as you waited in the car park of the local supermarket, you weren’t entirely sure if it was going to turn up at all. But sure enough, a little 12 seater mini van eventually rolled into view. Once aboard, I was catapulted into the slipstream of someone else’s life. It stopped to drop passengers off at their homes, everyone seemed to be called Randy or John, and they all greeted each other with knowing questions: “How’s Linda doing?” “Did your Mom come down to visit in the end?”. It made a fascinating ride. I could see Boudica bobbing safely around on the rack at the front, and I enjoyed listening to the locals patter to while away an hour down the coast.
I got off the bus with just 20 miles to ride, to finally catch up Lydia and a third friend of ours, Laura. It was getting dark, and I was determined to make it. I started down the road with a gritted determination. Suddenly 'booooooofffff!’ - my back tyre exploded, leaving behind a big hole.
OOOO OFFICER
As if by magic (I’m honestly not sure where he came from) a Highway Patrol officer appeared. “You okay there mam?”. I babbled something about the back tyre and a bus and in true McNuff’ll-Fix-it-herself style “Oh I’ll be okay, I have Gaffa tape.” Then I stopped. And thought. Actually, this sort of is his job. And I was losing light. So I accepted his offer to throw my bike in the boot of his patrol car and drive me to town.
The poor bloke. I’m sure he regretted his decision within about 5 seconds. He relayed something rather official into the radio back to base “Um this is 90214, niner, we have an 1148, chaperone to the shoreline RV park for drop off, and return to post, over”. Well. How exciting I thought. And then I noticed all the pretty lights on the dashboard. And it began. The kid in the candy store was unleashed:
“What does this do?” One word answer. “Ooooo. And this?!” Silence. “What’s an 1148? Am I an 1148?” Two word answer. Silence. “So… Are you into sports?” “No, not really mam” “Oh. Well. You must go to he gym or something - you look like you pump iron….” Wow. I actually just said that.
He finally dropped me off 20 miles down the road with a smile and a nervous wave. I’m not entirely sure he thought I hadn’t escaped from the local mental asylum.
CALIFORNIA - NOT WHAT YOU’D EXPECT
The California coast is so very very different from how I imagined it to be. And I love that. I’ve seen nothing of the white sandy beaches, endless sunshine and abundance of beautiful bodies that Arnie likes to tell us about on tourism commercials. I think all of that business happens south of San Francisco. Northern California, is rugged, foggy, damp and windy. For the most part the sands are dark and the currents of the ocean too dangerous to take more than a quick dip. At one point, as the route left the coast and entered farmland, I turned to the girls and said “I love this, it reminds me of home.” I’m not sure if it was the whiff of cow turd in the air, the terrible road surface, the drizzle or the rolling fields, but something just screamed of England. Ah Blighty. How I miss thee so.
REDWOODS AND THE SONOMA COAST
California is nothing if not varied. The Redwood National Parks in the North are mystical places. Even more so when caked in a thick fog. We rode for miles along the 'Avenue of the Giants’, clad in high vis jackets, surrounded by some of the biggest tree-beasts I’ve ever seen. Each one watching over us like old grandfather time himself. I thought about the things they must have seen in the 800 years they’d been standing. If trees could talk…
But the Sonoma coast took the bicycling biscuit for me. Route 1 is one of those car commercial roads - a baby smooth surface that wiggles its way round cliffs, in and out of coves and even takes you up above the cloud line. At one point we were riding with our faces only a few metres from soaring birds of pray. It. Was. Epic.
Finally, slowly but surely we began to see more and more people on the roads. We met the 'weekend warriors’ on their way out from San Francisco as we descended into the city ourselves. Rounding the final bend and seeing the Golden Gate Bridge come into view made my lil heart skip a beat. It’s only a bridge. But when you’ve seen something so many times in pictures, to arrive there having travelled (mostly) under your own steam, makes it just that wee bit more emotional.
We’re exploring the city for a few days now before heading to the desert, and state number 5 - Nevada. It’s going to be hot like the sun out there, and there’s some big passes to climb. I cannie wait.
