field notes (from DC to Chicago)
thurs: an accidentally long wait in Philly’s bus station, a place that’s all of America’s ugliness and none of her charm, with an overpriced Dunkin cold brew. there’s a girl with a springsteen shirt opposite me but we dont talk. then away on the bus, over the susquehanna river, through baltimore’s freeway nest and a long brick wall painted with letters that spell out ‘this must be the place’, because i cannot escape those five words, it seems, and then into washington where i load my back with bags and walk half an hour in overwhelming heat until every inch of me is wet with sweat. the hostel is not great: a lot of strange stuffy rules, like shoes at the door, and a weird office-cum-living-room where some bored european party teens lounge damply on a leather sofa. my room has no windows, i am the only girl, and it smells like old towels and lynx. a boy from chicago offers me weed. i head straight out again, into the muggy sunset, buy bread from whole foods and walk to the white house, which is much smaller than i expected (until i realise that the capitol and the white house are not the same building, which is an embarrassing discovery), and sit by the washington monument as the light dims. possibly my worst day of travelling so far.
fri: i sleep surprisingly well, though, and in the morning sit and voluntarily eat the chocolate chip pancakes the host cooks us, international travellers clumped round the upstairs breakfast table. he’s funny, i like him. ‘rhino guy!’ he proclaims when a guest walk in, because he is wearing a t shirt illustrated with a cute cartoon baby rhino. ‘i call him rhino guy because look at this t shirt, look at it. isn't it so cute?!’ everyone is laughing. hot hazy sunshine, and 20000 steps around the city, from the capitol down the national mall, scissoring in and out of museums and galleries (the hirshhorn is wonderful, the smithsonian castle tacky, the air/space museum like a boring theme park, the sculpture garden lovely, the museum of american history paradise for this nerd). i take my iced coffee past the ww2 memorial, which is so big you’d think america fought for six years too, down along the water to the lincoln memorial. i’m reading outside when i remember there’s supposed to be storms this afternoon, and then i notice how bruised the sky is behind the memorial, so after paying abe a long glance (thinking of everything i studied this year, in us history class, watching birth of a nation with prof cohen’s race and american film class, watching ford’s young mr lincoln for american music class...) i sit, back against one of the pillars warmed by the day’s sun, and watch the storm roll in all down the mall. a delicious cool scattered breeze and a darkening, and then there’s a mass exodus into the memorial’s innards as rain’s expelled from the sky. the kind of rain that sweeps across large empty spaces like army lines across a field. and forkfuls of lightning (more than once i hear, ‘now if that lightning just moved a little north and west towards the white house, and trump was in...’). i wait for the rain to ease and then i walk in it, to the vietnam memorial where there are groups in ponchos looking for the names of people they knew - it startles me a little, british memorials are so relatively old - and then stand under a tree (in a storm, smart) listening to the live version of the river where springsteen talks about getting his draft notice for vietnam and failing his physical. i was going to go to georgetown but it’s too late and wet now, so i wander foggy bottom instead, relishing the cool air.
sat: la colombe in a converted warehouse full of washington hipsters (who are distinctly less hip than their brooklyn/philly counterparts) and then the national art gallery (street photography, plath, gilded age portraits, arthur ashe, presidents), and then staggering with my bags from bus stop to station, buying unhealthy snacks. twenty hours on a greyhound from dc to chicago. some are armed with pillows. i eat two bagels and then the rest of the journey is a strange dream. ten hours of broken bus sleep, interrupted by layovers in pittsburgh and cleveland, where i droop against vending machines and stare at nothing. i see radio relay towers and the rock and roll hall of fame, but mostly i sleep, that kind of sleep where some part of you is always aware of how uncomfortable you are. my bones crumble.
(bus ride notes: Elderly Russian lady and her grandson eating doughnuts in silence Driver in aviators and lipstick Got stopped because of suspected dope on us. Had to wait for state trooper. Guy who complained in baseball hat and boots, very alert looking, stout and bald, highlighting what looks like a religious sermon. Trump alert? Everyone else moaning: 'it's not a big deal' Black lady in fifties going home to Detroit because she's homesick. Plays on the games in the bus station and wins a toy rabbit. she is wearing a white dress. Man feeds another man a bite of his apple. very odd. 'I've been in love with this band since 1979' - non stop talking man behind me on bus chatting up the poor lass next to him, loves rush, ‘i’m talking so much because i don’t want to fall asleep and miss my stop’) small boy at 4am - 'For dinner I eat STEAK! For dessert I eat CAKE! No, I eat ice cream. I eat key lime pie. Key lime pie's my favourite')
sun: sunrise in ohio. sleep. starbucks at 8am in indiana. chicago by 11, and back in my comfort zone of city subway systems. a man offers me assistance with the ticket machine but i’ve figured it out already. i can’t open the door to my airbnb and have to send some embarrassing texts and get a neighbour to let me in, and one of the cats bites me to see if i’m dangerous, but then i’m in and the bed’s soft, the AC cold, the bags dropped. so tired and disorientated by the overnight bus that i do not move for a few hours, and then i walk to the local park, get a coffee, find a cheap supermarket (chicago is by far the cheapest place for food i’ve found in the US so far). in the evening, lie under a patchwork quilt listening to a mexican family party next door and watch (stupidly) to the bone on netflix. worthless trigger.
mon: neighbourhood run, one mile in i trip and take off many layers of flesh from my wrists and elbows, bruise my knees and hips. showering is extremely painful now, as is a denim jacket on bare arms. head to wicker park, get werewolf coffee and then find an aldi - the smell is exactly the same as home and so are the prices, i can finally afford healthy food! - and wander streets as sun dips. the bloomingdale trail, which i take to get back to the el station, is busy with evening runners and cyclists, and in the warm twilight it looks idyllic. in a park people are doing yoga, while on the other side a bmx club squeeze tyres. i could live here, too, is what i’m trying to say. eat a healthy dinner, then undo all that with reeses cups. watch twentieth century women. my room is so comfortably and cosy. i could live here too.
