poly bear!ollie and cat!kimi with hybrid handler reader… do u see my vision (i need them so bad actually)
no bc same anon
you were prema's resident f2 hybrid specialist
maybe you started in 2024 so ollie and kimi were the first hybrids under your care
obviously they've both had a few handlers before as they made their way up the feeder series
but no one like you
for starters, you're actually taking care of their special enclosure at the prema headquarters??? you're trimming bushes and removing thorns and putting up scratching towers for kimi and tyre swings for ollie?
you're pretty new to being a professional hybrid handler, because you're probably only around their age too
anyway
you're so perfect and you take care of them so well that even when they're both signed to different f1 teams they're asking you to please still be their handler
prema is always looking for the best for their drivers and tell you that if you're interested in continuing to work with kimi and ollie that they'll release you from your contract (+ you'll always be welcome back to handle their other hybrid drivers)
so you get a new contract split between mercedes and haas
before you know it you're running across the paddock trying to stop cat!kimi from knocking everything off everyone's tables while trying to stop bear!ollie from either falling asleep on or trying to play with everyone
the only time you can take your eye off one of them is if you leave bear!ollie with bunny!arthur and the ferrari hybrid handler. they'll play and probably wreak havoc but they'll be safe and it means you can stop kimi from hissing at a reporter who flirted with your or ollie
they're chaotic and tiring and sometimes you wonder if you'd have more energy if you weren't their boyfriend/handler
but at the end of the day, you love them and they love you
and also the cuddle piles are annoyingly adorable

Tennis AU to start off the weekend anyone? @blacklaces they're idiots, your honour. Empty heads no thoughts. I also haven't really edited this, hopefully there's no mistakes lol
Part 1 | Part 12 | Part 14
Part 13
Max's eyes crinkled adoringly as Daniel stepped out of the changing room stall. The brunette smiled widely and did a little spin, popping his hip out to the side to pose cutely.
Max motioned for him to come closer and pulled his pliant body in for a hug, tucking his nose into Daniel's neck, the Velcro closure of the borrowed race suit brushing against his growing beard.
They were going karting, having helicoptered in for the afternoon. The track was empty save for them four and a few employees.
Max should have, but he honestly hadn't taken into consideration how he'd react, how Daniel would look in a race suit. Even a general, slightly ill-fitting one. Now, all he could think about was how Daniel would look in a fitted, navy RBR race suit. With his flag and name on his hip. With the nomex peaking out at his throat, the clashing bulls branding him as theirs. His. Max's
"You look good." He greeted, feeling against his skin as Daniel's smile widened.
"Yeah? I look like a proper racer now?" Daniel chuckled, not at all aware of Max’s possessive thoughts.
“You should wear one of mine.” Max kissed the column of Daniel’s throat, pressing himself closer into his boyfriend’s space. Daniel’s hand clenched against his shoulder.
“Yeah?” His voice was fainter, like he breathed out the word rather than spoke it. “Want to fuck me in it? Get me all messy?”
Max inhaled sharply, leaning back to lock eyes with Daniel. His dick was hard and his brain was overflowing with ideas, all the places he’s happily press Daniel down and fuck into him. He’d finish all over him, smearing cum all over the sponsor logos.
Max cursed, then lunged forward to press his lips to Daniel’s. Daniel’s hands scrambled against Max’s own baggy race suit, trying to locate the hidden zipper before his brain turned completely to mush.
“Oi!” Someone called to their right. Daniel groaned, knowing Blake’s disapproving mother call anywhere.
“Are you fucking kidding me right now?” Michael joined in, Max peeked over to see them stood at the door hands out in exasperation. “Can we really not leave you two alone for two minutes before you’re humping each other?”
“To be fair, it was like five minutes.” Daniel teased back, hooking his neck over Max’s shoulder to look at his two handlers blocking the doorway. He pressed his front to Max’s feeling how hard his boyfriend was and giving them both time to calm down.
Max snorted, but said nothing in his defense. He wouldn’t ever apologise for wanting Daniel.
“I dunno if I prefer you acting like toddlers or horny teenagers.” Blake groaned, pressing his forehead into a palm and shook his head.
“Can we go karting now? Or do we have to worry about one of you bending the other over a cone or something?” Michael asked dryly.
“Don’t give them ideas mate.” Blake groaned again at the same time that Daniel muttered “there’s an idea.”
They eventually did go karting, with Max winning the first two races. Unwilling to accept that the ‘inevitable’ Max Verstappen would wipe the floor with them in karting, the unimpressed losers banded together to win.
They drove the dirtiest they’ve ever had in their life; Blake and Michael cutting Max off at literally every turn to give Daniel the opportunity to slip up the inside and win a race.
Daniel distracting Max with lewd gestures and promises just enough for Blake to bump him in the tyre barriers and Micheal to eke out a win.
Michael taking one for the team and completely ruining his and Max’s race for Blake to win the final one the tournament.
By the end of the afternoon, they were all red faced and laughing. Curled in on themselves, holding their stomachs with boisterous belly laughs.

Patrick gets experience on canal transit as line handler on Jehol - by Patrick Dwyer
Original Blog posted: Saturday, 11 May 2013
"Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy" Norman Vincent Peale
Well we have been at the Shelter Bay Marina (Colon – Atlantic side of canal just inside the northern breakwater) for a few days for some well deserved R & R organising all the red tape to allow us to passage through the Panama Canal. Some of the other crew have taken line handling jobs on other yachts needing assistance taking their yachts through the canal. I decide to do the same so I have some first hand experience when I take my own yacht through next Tuesday i.e. practice on someone else’s yacht first.
The requirements are that all yachts need 4 line handlers in addition to the master of the vessel to be allowed to transit the canal. Further, yachts under 20 metres also require 4 mooring lines of at least 50 metres each and up to 12 car tyres wrapped in plastic bags with a bit of rope attached so you can attach to the sides of the vessel for protection against the canal wall or when rafted up to the other vessel/s.
I hear that Philippe the master and owner of a 53 foot super catamaran made by X Light Catamarans in France is looking for an extra line handler. He is just opposite us on the next marina arm. I visit his yacht “Axe Jehol” (Named after a famous Belgium race horse) and meet him. He gives me the job for his transit on the Saturday & Sunday giving me time to take the busses back from Panama City for our transit on the Tuesday.
His yacht is amazing. Over $2m worth of yacht in carbon fibre yacht with rotating mast also in carbon fibre (when rotating it he can get up to another knot of boat speed and also allows him to reef or bring the sail down when underway and not into the wind as most non rotating masted yachts do). It looks mean and fast designed to easily cover 200nm a day and often travelling at 15-18 knots for long periods. On looking inside everything is designed to save weight. It has a very spartan layout with no doors only curtains, no wooden draws or steps or other bits and pieces just pure unadulterated carbon fibre. Philippe was considering not even having a hard bimini for sun protection because the carbon fibre to make it would add 30kg. His engine controls are only on one side of the yacht because of the extra weight and no steering wheel just 2 tillers like on a 3m yacht just to save weight. How much weight is saved well his yacht is 6 tonnes and mine is 12 tonnes and his is about 3 metres longer. Say no more.
All this reminds me of an alleged quote from one Sydney to Hobart skipper who told his crew that they had to cut down the weight they brought on board suggesting they cut their toothbrush in half to save weight. Philippe has taken this to another level.
There is usually a compromise in most choices i.e. speed V comfort. Hestia will cover 160nm a day if things are going well so for 40-50nm a day difference in our yacht you have one ice box not 3 fridges and freezer, 4 generous single berths and one queen berth in saloon and one shower & toilet versus 4 queen sized cabins & 2 single cabins, one shower versus 5 showers, one toilet versus 4 toilets, 3 small batteries versus 7 large batteries and you see where the extra weight goes. The differences are many these are just a few of them.
Anyway the days fly by until Saturday afternoon arrives. I meet Philippe and his other crew at 1pm and depart Shelter Bay Marina for an area known as “The Flats” some 2nm away where transiting yachts wait for an advisor at 3pm to assist each of the yachts transiting the canal. Note that boats under 20m have advisors whereas vessels over 20m have pilots. Both have the same purpose.
We are then met by an advisor on a launch who is dropped off at our yacht and is equipped with all his paperwork, mobile phones and radios. Each yacht has its own advisor even though we are one of 3 vessels rafted up side by side at the rear end of a 600 foot container ship going through the first of the locks (The Gatun lock) that has 3 chambers each lifting the vessels about 10 metre per chamber. This lock is about 3 miles away from our anchorage at The Flats.
We raft up just outside the entrance to the locks and go through to the lock as one unit after the container ship we are transiting these locks with enters first.
Once inside the first chamber the lock door shuts and we are thrown a small rope called a messenger with a monkey fist (rope tided into a ball) attached to the end from about 30 metres away. The two line handlers on shore throws this missile at us and it hits the deck hard and is then picked up by the line handlers on board each of the outside vessels and is attached separately to 2 of the mooring lines required to be on board each vessel and is then hauled up by the line handlers ashore and secured onto a bollard. The fore and aft lines on both the 2 outside vessels ( the vessel in the middle just watches) are then adjusted by each of the line handlers on each yacht so that the vessels stay in the middle of the lock as the vessels rise as the waters flood into the lock. The water that is released is enormous and causes many whirlpools and disturbs the vessels creating a hazardous situation if left unmanaged. One of the 3 advisors on board the 3 yachts moves onto the centre yacht and gives commands to the other advisors, the masters of the 2 outside vessels (to put their engines into forward or reverse) or to the line handlers on the outside yacht to take up or let out their dock line.
We eventually get through the 3 chambers without incident and then unraft just outside the lock in Gatun lake and then move under our own power to a big muffin (the name we called the huge mooring buoys about 2nm away from the main shipping channel where we rafted up again and had a swim and cool down in the lake (avoiding any alligators alleged to be in the lake) before having dinner and going to sleep in my new crammed quarters).
The following morning we were greeted at 6am by a new advisor who walked all over the slightly damp boat in his printed plastic shoes making marks like an animal at an African water hole. I was following him around with a rag wiping up the brown marks he was leaving everywhere. He could see me and what I was doing but he wasn’t going to take his shoes off for anyone. He was in charge, or at least that is what he thought.
Then after giving him breakfast we were off at about 6.5 knots for the 5 hour transit of the lake following to the port side of the red channel markers. For quite a long time we did not see another ship as there had been some fog at the Miraflores locks (the first lock on the Pacific side) that had delayed the passage of some ships. I was amazed to learn that only 45 vessels of any sort transit the canal each 24 hours and of those 3 to 6 vessels are small craft like ours. The lake has a current minimum depth of 38 feet which they are hoping to soon bring it to 45 and then 60 feet to allow bigger vessels to transit. Many vessels now off load their cargo at either end of the canal and transport their cargo by rail to the other end to be loaded onboard another vessel for its continuing voyage.
On the way to the Pedro Miguel locks which has one chamber we saw many dredges keeping the channel at least 38 feet or to slowly increase the depth to 45 feet.
After around 5 hours we had arrived at the only lock which only has one chamber. We rafted up again and duplicated the previous manoeuvres. We stayed rafted up to the other vessels after transiting this lock as the final lock (Miraflores Lock) was only 1nm onwards. This lock has 2 chambers and like the preceding one you drop about 10m each chamber. This is less troublesome to yachts as there are much fewer whirlpools as the water is leaving not coming in.
After going through the final lock we were in the Pacific. Yahoo!!!!. Philippe opened a bottle of champagne that we all had a glass of.
As we motored to our anchorage at Flamenco we dropped off our advisor to a launch that picked up the advisors off the other yachts we looked up to see what looked like a flattened version of the Sydney Harbour Bridge another 2nm onwards
Having passed under this bridge we dropped off our mooring lines & tyres that were hired in Colon to a waiting barge and then continued on to our anchorage.
I stayed the night on the yacht doing a few things in Panama City the following morning before I took 2 busses back to Colon and then Shelter Bay Marina.
Now I have all the knowledge to do the transit on Hestia in two days time.

Been thinking more about this, and about how it develops in s3. So...Lila is a liar. She would probably be the first to admit it, cheerfully. Diego knows it. But although the first thing she does when she sees him again is to tell him a whopper of a lie about them having a 12yo kid, what does she then do? She disappears—despite the fact that she is doing this to "kick the tyres", check how he'll be as a dad before she admits the truth, that she's pregnant.
And I think that's for a good reason: she knows that, if she sticks around, she'll end up telling him the truth. Which is precisely what happens—they finally reunite (I doubt there's much deep conversation that night), and in the morning, while they're searching for Stanley, she inadvertently lets it drop that he's not really theirs.
I don't even think that it's because she can't resist those big brown eyes. I think it's because she's just...not that good at keeping up a lie. Her façades are mostly just the truth with ribbons on, and I think it's because her heart's not in it. She doesn't want to be her mother's secret agent, and while that's a familiar pattern that she goes back to, she's far more comfortable being uncomfortably truthful.
Although...sometimes, that's also a misdirect. She'll say something to stop people from digging deeper, because they're worried about what might come out of her mouth, and that's how she protects her inner self, her fears and—worse!—her hopes and dreams. She's had to hide those away from the Handler since she was a child, and that probably is instinctual now, not to give too much of herself away, so it can't be used against her.
(Also something she's bad at: the Handler sees straight through to her growing feelings for Diego. Either Lila is just not good at this shit, or she's chosen to hang out the most with the two people who can read her like an open book written for very dumb children. Ritu Arya is also telegraphing this to us, the audience, and her acting is superb, she could definitely play Lila as a convincing liar if she wanted.)
That's what makes her one of the good guys, in the end: she might be lying, but she's uncomfortable with it, and ultimately she wants to open herself up to the one person who means the most to her.
On of the things I love about Lila is her many layers of trying to throw Diego off the scent, when it (unexpectedly) turns out that he noticed her disappearing act. Like, she’s kind of a bad liar? It’s pretty obvious that she’s dissembling, and Diego isn’t fooled. But she just throws everything at him, like she’s working her way down a list, until something sticks:
“Trying to ditch me again?”
Denial: “What are you talking about?”
“Last night. Hey. Where’d you go?”
Defensiveness: “You really want to do this now?”
“Really.”
Guilt: “Fine. I went to the pharmacy to buy gauze for your disgusting stab wound. Is that allowed, or…?”
Misdirection: “As a matter of fact, you owe me $1.89. Or you would, if I’d actually paid for it.”
Distraction: “They’re playing our song!”
This last one finally works - maybe he’s distracted, maybe he’s decided it’s not worth pursuing right now, or maybe he’s just feeling a rosy glow about Lila at this point, and is prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt - okay, so she’s lying, but she also bet against him for lunch jellos and helped him escape the nuthouse and doesn’t understand yoghurt, so it’s probably no big deal, right?
It’s only later, after he asks for help - something that is rare and difficult for Diego - and she leaves him hanging, that he decides he can’t trust her, and parkours off into the bushes. But anyhow: they are cute, they are messed up, and Lila has had years of manipulative bullshit loaded onto her from the Handler, and yet she’s still…weirdly honest? It’s kind of obvious when she’s lying, even if people don’t know what she’s lying about.
#she's also pretty forthright with his siblings#she gives Allison a straight talk about how time travel fucks with you#and uh she's clear about how much she hates Five (until she doesn't)#anyhow#I love her your honour#lila pitts#diego hargreeves#tua#the umbrella academy#diego/lila#dielila#dilila

The Mosley Review: Bullet Train
You know when a film's trailer delivers a glimpse of the entire thing in a fun way? Its rare for a trailer to deliver the exact tone of a film so accurately isn't it? Well the team that designed the trailer to this film should win an Oscar for it because this film was everything it said it was gonna be and so much more. It is truly rare for a film to be this much fun and engaging from the opening montage to the closing credits. The action film genre can be a variety of things whether it be an action film that has a thin layered story with great set pieces or a great story that informs the set pieces and they work in tandem together. This film was the latter and I loved the story and all of its moving parts. It does take some influences from films like Snatch and Smokin’ Aces with the plot being centered around a person and object and it was great. There were multiple slivers of a family drama, dark comedy and revenge tale all mixed into this perfect storm of circumstance and luck. The characters themselves push the story and take you on a fun ride that you'll never forget. This film definitely features my favorite collection of characters this year so far.
Brad Pitt was excellent and having the time of his life as the "unlucky" character Ladybug. You want the guy to succeed and get off the train, but there's always something or someone pulling him right back on. He was charming and hilarious as he tries to stay so Zen throughout the mayhem. Sandra Bullock was fun and witty as his handler Maria Beetle. The two of them have such great chemistry and I love their heart to hearts after and sometimes during the action. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Bryan Tyree Henry were truly my favorite characters of the film Tangerine and Lemon. Their chemistry was electric the moment they were on screen together. Their banter was the funniest, insightful, quick and you truly feel their brotherly love toward one another. Tangerine was the perfect bruiser and Lemon was truly the brains and I loved every second. I kind of want a spinoff with those characters. Joey King was perfectly sadistic and cunning as The Prince. She has such command on screen and you love her even though she is so evil. Andrew Koji was endearing and wonderful as Yuichi Kimura and his story was one of the strongest pillars of the film. The great Hiroyuki Sanada was as awesome and elegant as his father The Elder. There isn't a role he's played where he doesn't bring such gravitas to each scene. Their chemistry was strong and I loved their strained relationship. Michael Shannon was awesome and a pure rockstar as the Russian crime boss The White Death. Once he's on screen, you just love every villainous moment of him chewing the scenery. The way his story is tied to everyone is wonderfully weaved throughout and its one hell of a payoff in the end.
The soundtrack in this film was excellent as we here the Japanese version of classic hits and they're all perfectly placed and compliment the tone of the story and emotional beats. The action in this film is perfectly choreographed to tell the story and deliver some great comedic moments and shocking twists. You have to appreciate when a director that comes from a stunt background, really shows how to shoot action the correct way. Visually the film is stunning and each train car has its own personality. Director David Leitch has made not only one of my favorite action films, but one of the best dark comedies of the year. I loved this film and I can't recommend it enough. Do stick around for one of the best story buttons in the mid credit scene that made myself and the entire theater cheer. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

so I am the president of my club because there isn’t anyone else really except the treasurer and she said it was too much pressure. anyway so we revamped all the training courses to be 6 weeks instead of 8 and I made the agility more streamlined.
I’m not very experienced, but there is literally no one else to teach agility. so I created a foundations class and an intermediate class with an outline for each so I at least know what I am doing when and have the resources to offer. hoping it is a success. when I took over the agility training last year, there was really no set plan and I found improvising to be difficult and it made the students a bit frustrated.
so anyway here are the two courses I wrote up, they are for 1 hour classes each week for 6 weeks. i expect each activity to be about 10-15 minutes. the idea is to introduce concepts and techniques. i will lay out expectations of homework/outside class training and they won’t be able to progress from foundations to intermediate without proving they are ready to.
if anyone had any feedback or wanted to get some ideas if they were needing to do the same thing for their club/business:
Agility Foundations
Week 1
Reinforcement (lecture)
Forward send (without handler motion)
Forward send (with handler motion)
90 degree turn on the flat

Chapter 8 | Chapter 10
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
“-ront door!”
Lizzy braked suddenly, causing everyone in the Jeep to lurch forward. The hadrosaur trumpeted in alarm and hastily moved off through the grass. Response calls from other animals, presumably the rest of its herd, echoed up to them from further down the valley.
Bloody hell, it moves just like an elephant though.
“Careful now, Armstrong.”
“Jesus, Lizzy!” Kathy grumbled. “Good thing I’m buckled in…”
“Sorry, sorry! It’s just-“ Lizzy rubbed her face furiously and tried to comprehend. “Do you even know how mad that sounds?! We have a T. rex!”
“This is going to change everything about how zoos operate.” Kathy said. “Who wants to go and see a lion or a tiger when you can see a frickin’ dinosaur!”
“Hopefully the palaeontologists won’t be out of a job.” Isaac added.
“They’ll have to switch to ethology” Lizzy countered excitedly. “A whole new branch of research just opened up. What are the dinosaurs classed as anyway? Reptiles?”
“I read they were more like birds.” Tom finally regained the ability to speak. “They’re in their own clade somewhere between the two. Guys. We just saw a dinosaur. It was right there.”
Lizzy was still fixated on the apparent T. rex, she turned to Muldoon. “Can we go and see it?” She demanded. “The T.rex in its paddock, I mean. Like, now? We all want to, eh guys?”
“Uh, yeah. Sure.” Isaac said nervously.
“That one’s a carnivore right?” Kathy asked. “Yes, I’d very much like to see a carnivore!”
“Can’t, she isn’t here yet.” Muldoon shut them down instantly.
“What do you mean? She definitely exists though, yes?” Lizzy continued her interrogation.
“Oh, I can assure you she’s very much real. But I can’t tell you why she isn’t on the island yet. All you need to know at the moment, is that she’ll be with us shortly. Keep driving.”
Mysterious…
Something about his expression told her not to push it any further, even though she was dying to find out. Lizzy moved on to her next question instead. “Right. So how do you know she’s female? How do you sex a dinosaur?”
“You’d need to ask Henry Wu in the genetics lab for the in-depth version, but essentially, all the animals out in the park are female.”
“Interesting.” She muttered, following the tyre tracks which seemed to be circling back around to the maintenance road.
Very much an artificial population. If the dinosaurs can’t breed, they should know exactly how many animals they have at any one time…in theory. How do they keep track of them all? Wonder how that impacts herd dynamics? Isn’t it stressful to the rest when new animals just appear?
Each question of hers that was answered just led her to ten new ones. She wasn’t done, nowhere near. “How many animals are there? How many species?”
“You ask an awful lot of questions.” Muldoon pointed out dryly.
“Yeah, and my sorry arse doesn’t know when to quit, so get answering.” Lizzy raised an eyebrow. “Can’t claim you weren’t warned about me.”
Kathy clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle a giggle. Even if Lizzy’s protests that she ‘wasn’t flirting’ were justified, it was sure as hell entertaining, watching an unstoppable force meet an immovable object.
***
When they eventually pulled back around to the visitor centre, Richardson’s Jeep was nowhere to be seen. They’d gone almost the whole way around the island, finding out what paddock belonged to what species. Some were lying empty, waiting for animals to fill them. Nothing had been as up-close as the hadrosaur, though they’d seen shapes moving around in the trees, and heard suggestive rustlings in the undergrowth on more than one occasion.
“Wow, first back.” Kathy exclaimed.
Muldoon reached for the radio again. “Richardson, we’re at the visitor centre. ETA?”
“…about 20 minutes. We’re heading back now, over.”
“See anything good?”
“…a few of the Styracosaurs came over to investigate. Getting a bit hot for much else. Over and out.”
Lizzy put the handbrake on and let the Jeep idle, stretching her legs out and wiggling her feet. Now what do Styracosaurs look like?
Muldoon thought for a moment. “Who’s brave enough to have a go at driving the Jeep while we wait for them?”
“Uh, sure.” Kathy volunteered. “I’ll give it a try.”
“Fine. Armstrong, get out.”
Lizzy did as she was asked, happy to finally walk around. She wandered over to the steps, Kathy wouldn’t thank her for looming too close while she was trying to get to grips with a new skill.
Kathy hesitantly climbed over into the front seat. The engine revved loudly. A thunk as she put it in gear. Then the Jeep lurched forward and stalled. “Oh balls.” She exclaimed.
“Try again. Easy on the clutch.” Muldoon advised.
“Yes. Good. What’s a clutch?” Lizzy heard Kathy ask.
A middle-aged man wandered into view around the side of the visitor centre as Kathy was revving again. He had a baseball cap, dark sunglasses and an impressive moustache. He took in what was happening, and then turned to Lizzy and spoke in an American accent. “What on Earth is Muldoon doing to that poor woman?”
The Jeep inched forward, Kathy clutching the wheel with both hands, stiff as a board.
“Teaching her to drive a manual.”
“God help her. Are you the new recruits?”
“Half of them, anyway. I’m Lizzy Armstrong. I’ve come over from Namibia.” She held out her palm to him.
He moved forward to shake her hand. “Gerry Harding. I’m the veterinarian here at the park. I’ve come over from San Diego.”
“Oh, neat! So does that make you the first paleo-veterinarian, I guess, in the world?” It hadn’t occurred to her yet, but of course they would need a vet on site. The sudden mental image of the hadrosaur in the surgery waiting room amongst the dogs and cats meant she had to suppress a cackle.
Harding smiled at her, it made his eyes crinkle delightfully. “It sure does. What’s your background?”
“I was studying African Elephant behaviour and herd dynamics for my PhD. Big herbivores is my area of expertise.”
He nodded in approval. “Nice. Say, do you happen to know my daughter by any chance?”
What was his last name again? Harding.
Oh shit.
No. No no no.
Lizzy swallowed and hesitated. “Wait, your daughter is Sarah Harding?”
Lizzy had met Sarah, a fellow ethologist, more than once over the years. She had to be finishing up her own doctorate by now. Lizzy wouldn’t class her as a friend, whenever they spoke, they inevitably ended up disagreeing over something. What started off as heated debates would without fail turn into downright fiery arguments, complete with threats of violence. Jeff had thought it hilarious and waited until they had almost come to blows before breaking them up. Now they generally avoided each other. They were too alike, both too proud to ever back down, far too stubborn. In a way it was a real shame that they didn’t share the same views.
Harding nodded. “Indeed she is. And you’re not the only one here who’s encountered her before.”
Let me guess…
“Muldoon too?” Made sense, everyone knew everyone after all.
“Yes, when I asked him he just swore and wouldn’t speak to me for the rest of the day. My Sarah is, ah, quite memorable.”
“That’s one word for her.” Lizzy said cautiously, and Harding’s smile got wider.
“It’s alright. I know she isn’t everyone’s favourite. But her work is excellent.”
Lizzy’s eyes widened and she nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, her work’s amazing! But she can be a right cow sometimes-“
She cursed herself as soon as the words were out, subtlety did not come easily to Lizzy, but she’d just insulted Harding’s daughter to his face.
Bloody put my foot in it again…
She hastily tried to backtrack. “Oh damn, sorry, that came out wrong-“
To her surprise Harding started guffawing in response. “No it didn’t! My daughter’s ability to spot bullshit a mile off comes straight from her old dad. I appreciate your honesty, really. I’ll let her know you’re on the island. That should brighten her day.”
“Yeah, to find out I’m finally on a different continent.” Lizzy was only half-joking.
Harding nodded. “Don’t worry, if she ever comes to visit I’ll make sure the rest of the team is in the storm bunker before she sees you.”
Lizzy grinned. “That’s probably for the best.”
“You have a good day now, Lizzy. I look forward to working with you.”
“You too, Gerry.”
***
A few minutes after Harding left, Tom came walking over to join her, apparently bored with Kathy’s progress.
“Are you not having a bash at driving?” Lizzy asked sweetly. “Want some help?” A low blow, but she hadn’t forgotten how he’d tried to aggravate her earlier. Two could play.
“No, I’m good. Kathy on the other hand, you got your work cut out teaching her.”
“First-day nerves, she’ll be fine.”
“Who were you talking to?”
“That was Gerry Harding, he’s the dino vet. Turns out I know his daughter.”
“You know everyone.” She didn’t like the edge that was creeping into his voice. “That how you got a job here?”
Lizzy corrected him. “Not really. I got recommended, sure, but it was Hammond who invited me.”
“Was it the other thing?” Tom asked after a moment of silence.
“What other thing?”
“Y’know-“ Tom made a circle with his thumb and forefinger of one hand and poked the index finger of his other hand through repeatedly. “That thing.”
Lizzy recoiled in disgust. She was disappointed, but not surprised that he arrived at that conclusion. Who did he assume she’d slept with? Someone in particular? Bloody all of them?! It wasn’t like she’d worked for years to build her name, stayed up until ungodly hours to meet deadlines, gone out into the savannah in the dead of night when the alarm call rang out that poachers were attacking. Yeah, he was right, she’d had an easy life. Not.
“Yeesh, just call it sex, Tom, honestly. Are you twelve?” She looked him dead in the eyes and responded coldly. “Like I’d do that, anyway. I’m engaged.”
“Yeah, so?” Tom shrugged.
“What the hell do you mean?”
He had a stupid, self-assured smirk on his face. She wondered if someone had put him up to this, or if he really was that much of a prick.
“You don’t act like you are. Come on, you’re telling me you’ve been all by yourself in Africa for years and you’ve never even thought about it?”
Lizzy’s eyes narrowed. Who’d he been talking to? No, there’s no way he could possibly know that. He was just stabbing in the dark, trying to hit a nerve. Lucky guess.
She changed the subject, meeting him head on. “What’s your problem with me? We need to sort this out or neither of us will get a Team Leader job.”
“Just don’t get comfy, okay? He’s-“ Tom jerked his head in the direction of the Jeep, still making jerky rotations of the visitor centre. “-going easy on you, but you’re going to have to work with Richardson at some point.”
Lizzy had had enough, tired of him being so hostile now they were out of earshot of everyone else. “Yeah, well. I like a challenge. May the best woman win.”
Tom was about to retort when the Jeep finally stopped and Kathy jogged over to interrupt them. “Hey! Muldoon says I’m, and I quote, ‘not quite as terrible as when I started’. Isn’t that great!”
“Knew you’d get the hang of it.” Lizzy smiled. It was an effort, she was quietly seething.
Kathy plopped down in the middle of them. “What have you two been taking about?”
“Just stuff.” Tom answered non-committally.
“Yeah.” Lizzy watched as Richardson’s Jeep finally appeared around the corner of the track and made its way towards them. “Stuff.”
