Well for starters, the play is literally built around falling in love with the one person you're meant to hate. And that enemies to lovers vibe we were promised did not happen with R&J so we went for the dudes with a homoerotic rivalry.

A lot of productions make the murder an accident which is a tragic troupe, and angsty ships are so fun. A lot of their dialogue can be played as flirtatious.

And lastly, but arguably most importantly - it'd be so funny. Can you imagine them explaining it to their friends? And how much they'd make fun of them for liking each other?? Hilarious

(btw I'm not saying any of this in a judgemental or mean way, I'm just explaining why I like it)
