I’m sitting out the front of a pokies venue and I look terrible. I’m in tracksuit pants and my bag is a mess, it’s getting hot. Randoms walk past and I feel embarrassed and I feel as though my bones are heavy inside me pushing down against my organs. In the shower I keep my shampoo and body wash and everything else looking perfect. I arrange them just right. I don’t like the colour of the toothpaste tube so I throw it up over the shower door and onto the floor. I love how nice everything smells like pine needles and sage and bamboo.
I’m on the street and walking very fast. I have a drink in my hand. My skin is nice and clear and my parents at home love me and I love them too. My mum is too hard to write about because I love her so much and my dad too, I've been awake for 4 days now.
For some reason I'm on top of a building, right next to the Manchester Unity Building, all gothic, which makes me think of my friend Jamie who I first met in grade 4 and he said he liked my Asics and dared me to throw my pencil into the fan, spinning above our table, keeping the classroom cool.
Im on top of this building and it’s so beautiful, the morning sky, lights twinkling, trams and cars and people below, all small. Im crouching on some sort of vent. I used to climb this barbed wire fence with my sister and then we’d walk up a steep hill covered in pine needles, they were so slippery. We’d go over the hill and there were huge concrete pipes, I don’t know why they were there, in tyabb. They were just lying there, under pine trees, bigger than us. You’d keep walking and you’d see the Melbourne water reservoir up on a hill like a castle or something, it had little towers on each end and no one was around. No one was working. We’d run across and up the hill, but it was so steep we’d stumble backwards a bit and try not to slip.
Im not a city slicker but ive been city slicking! Im on top of another building now. I can see flinders street and the river and the tracks. I just had a psychologists appointment on the phone and I really needed to pee and I went into the public toilet on Southbank and then that public toilet jazz music started playing and she heard and told me to call back when I was ready and in a safe space.
My sister and I would explore this place over the fence and one time we found a creek, I'm not sure if it was a real creek or perhaps the stream was coming from a pipe somewhere. One time it was nearly getting dark and we saw empty beers cans deep in the bush. It made me so scared. I didn’t think anyone else would’ve been in there, deep in the bush, so far from a road or houses or anything. I imagined a scary older man. Squatting there getting pissed, in the bush. On Melbourne water private property. I think maybe I cried and told my little sister “we need to go home. We need to get out of here. “How could anyone want to ever have sex? How could that possibly feel good! My friends and I sat around in a circle at lunchtime and said it. My mum gave me a book about puberty and I cried and cried and went red in the lounge room. I only wore Bonds crop tops and not bras. The word bra sounds gross. I wore liners and thought “when I get my period I'm only ever going to use these, I wont need those big ones." I got my first period and I cried and it hurt so much. We were meant to be going away for the weekend and were staying somewhere with a pool . I swam in it with the pad in my bather bottoms.
One night my friend and I were in Philip island and were staying in her grandparents caravan in the front yard, we left in the middle of the night to go meet Damo and pat, at the skate park next to the oval.
On our walk over a man in a long coat with long hair walked past us and said hello and we kept walking. I was wearing denim shorts from target that were in the colour coral and my top was the lost girls the teen offshoot of the brand mink pink that I bought at the surf shop. This was my first time ever having a phone and I think I was 14. I was so shy and I couldn’t really talk to the boys. Just staring at the ground listening. Tayla was giggling and acting crazy. An hour later a dark figure moved its way across the oval, the man in the long coat with the long hair had circled back, and was coming towards us. I felt so much adrenaline and we sprinted like athletics day 100m sprint. Damo stayed at the skate park and greeted the man and shouted guys he’s fine come back! We walked over and each shook his hand and said hello, he said he couldn’t sleep. We said goodbye and went back to the caravan.
I’m grieving now and I'm climbing a fence. I'm climbing scaffolding and pushing myself up onto the roof like I'm pushing myself up out of a swimming pool. I never wanted to stop swimming when I’d go to friends houses and they had a pool. My teeth would chatter but it felt so fun. One time at my grandparents friends house we swam around the pool and my uncle and sister laughed and said I was a walrus as I floated around on a lilo. They laughed and laughed and said look we’ve spotted a walrus in the wild!
Now I'm in some lounge room and a scary guy comes in who has probably killed someone. Some kid in Tyabb from my school was murdered by his dad, beaten with a cricket bat, at cricket practice. The next day at school, it was completely silent at lunch time. I’m walking up the hill of my street and I can hear children laughing and chattering and splashing around in a pool and in through the floor to ceiling window I see a book case and a big lamp and a fancy couch and concrete floors and a beautiful rug and high ceilings and I feel so jealous.
The last time I saw her I didn’t bring flowers and I’d been up all night and I vaped in the hospital room toilet whilst she tried to recover from a lung operation. I didn’t bring flowers because I didn’t want to be too sentimental, and rub it all in her face. I wanted to be chill, pretend we weren’t there. Just normal hangs. She never ever talked to me about it all until then, in 20 minutes she told me everything, we hadn’t been alone together in a long time. She didn’t talk about it with anyone. My grandma believes in the law of attraction so we weren’t allowed to talk about it. Some women at her work were bitchy towards her and I hate those bitches.

this is on anon so i don’t doxx myself but oh my god i wish i could beam your photography into my classmates heads. im at uni in bendigo and usually when i tell people where i grew up i just say moorooduc, when they inevitably look confused i just say it’s a little rural farming community. then when they find out im from the mornington peninsula they think ive lied about being from a rural area like ??? we seriously need to stop the “went to sorrento once for a fancy lunch and only drove along the beach the whole way there” industrial complex because now people up in bendigo don’t know the majority of the peninsula is agricultural land and small towns decaying. like i went to moorooduc primary school, you have to zoom out like five times before you see anything that isn’t just fields. and i went to dromana secondary college which is surrounded by massive blocks and farms, your as close to fucking red hill as you are to actual dromana (dromana to dromana secondary is like 5km and dromana secondary to red hill is 4.2 km) and there is literally nothing in red hill it’s all just farms for eons. like all of my friends growing up were from tyabb and moorooduc and somerville and bittern and merricks. my experience of the peninsula was purely inland and evil
“my experience of the peninsula was purely inland and evil” god im stealing that. and yeah the general public has just a. shocking amount of misconceptions about the mornington peninsula. especially as of recently with the massive hike in the price of realestate and people don’t get that it wasn’t always that way and alot of us down here are dirt poor or farmers just trying to ge by. but yeah ong i think anyone who’s only driven on the coast should be completely banned from having an on opinion on the peninsula

In Victoria, Australia, another successful Tyabb airshow has been notched up by the Peninsula Aero Club. As always the show managed to touch a remarkably wide diversity of aviation heritage and entertainment, despite challenges from weather and aircraft availability. The core element of the display was provided by Paul Bennet Airshows as contracted by the Aero Club, but the show could not have happened without the 160 strong volunteer team and numerous local individuals and aircraft owners and operators who went above and beyond.
