About Valaria

A world with two main continents and a smaller third continent: referred to as the western, central, and eastern continents, and numerous islands.

Valaria is populated by three dominant bipedal species (humans, elves, Draigo) and three known subspecies (devar, lycanthropes, sang) The magic system is based on spells, which are cast by writing or speaking runes. Only two groups can use runes: magicians and Stalkers. Magicians write runes using ink or blood, while Stalkers learn to speak runes through experimentation and thirst for power.

A Watcher (glorified detective/bodyguard) seeks out a magician to reverse a curse placed upon his apprentice. A thief steals a gemstone from the Draigo that is much more valuable than it seems. And a devar messenger, tasked with an urgent message, is instead drawn into the conflict between a Stalker and her prey. Contains: magic whump, knife wounds, arrow wounds, burns, gunshot wounds.

Draven Cozenson, an infamous lycanthrope hunter, is tasked to capture numerous werecreatures within the city of Zariya. At the same time, a devar acquaintance seeks his aid. A young teen is kidnapped from her home for unknown reasons. Contains: kidnapping, blood drawings, gunshot wounds, knife wounds, magic whump, monsters.

"Mm, it's wrong to think of this world as fair, because that would be saying everyone is fair to everyone and that is wrong," Taraka started to talk, head tipped towards the ceiling. "But, there's give or take. For example, remember when I told you about me putting my worth on my siblings?"

Hayu waited for him to continue, but he only did after she nodded her head.

"In a way, that is me putting a burden on them. In another, that is also them putting a burden on me. Is it fair? No. Is it some kind of give or take? Yes." At that, Taraka leaned forward, his elbows on the table and fingers weaved to support his chin. "To live, you have to give to people, but you also have to take your fill from them. Sometimes it will be fair, sometimes less so, but it will always be a circle and that's what's important."

"Wait," Hayu chimed in when there was a pause. "How can it be less fair if you give and you take?"

Tarak shrugged. "Sometimes you can take less or more, give less or more. Sometimes it's the other person who does that. Most of the time, it'll be fair when it's between strangers or lukewarm relationships and it'll be less fair when two people are closer."

"Uh." She tried to wrap her head around the concept. "How so…?"

"Imagine this. I will give you a plate of food, maybe two slices of toast and an egg. The next day, since we're not close and you're afraid the food will cost you something, you give some food to me. The chances are bigger that you give me the same amount of food as I gave you the day before."

"That's … I guess that makes sense. But when it comes to someone anxious like me, wouldn't it be the same whether or not the person is close to me? I would be afraid of owing too much to them anyway."

Taraka tapped his finger to the table, his expression thoughtful. "I suppose when it comes to giving, people would generally say that they wouldn't differentiate people. But, back to the previous example. If I gave you food, would you accept a plate just like that? Would you question me or try to refuse because it's a burden to cook for you?"

"Oh, I wouldn't dare assume that," Hayu said. "If it's someone like you, they won't do anything they don't want. If you offered me food out of the blue, I'd first assume you're just in the rare mood to do so."

"Correct. Good. Now imagine the same scenario, but replace me with Binatri. Would you take all of the food she offers you? Would you give back the same amount, or more? Would you even take it at all?"

"No, I–" She blinked. The answer was instinctive, pulled out of her like a coiled spring that was finally released. Her forehead formed creases. "I would give back to her more."

Taraka waved his hand at her, as if saying 'there you go'. "And like that, it's already unfair. But there's still a circle of give and take going on, so it's mostly fine. If you're starting to give more and more but feeling bad to take anything back, the circle will break and your sense of self will be lost. The other way around is also the same."

In general, how did you come up with the Tales of Valeria series, and what is its premise?

Well, it wasn't intended to be a series in the first place, little twelve-year-old me had no clue when she started writing a backstory for her human ranger that a story like The Watcher and the Thief would appear almost of its own volition. It all began with that backstory, and then I renamed rangers to Watchers to separate from D&D, and then I expanded the world of Valaria, and then Octavian sprang into existences, and then I introduced magicians and Draigo and devar, and then the first draft of The Hunter, the Myth and the Cure was written, and then I wrote Magician's Bait, and then I began revising both TWatT and THtMatC, and now we here.

Tales from Valaria is a collection consisting of two novellas and currently one short story that takes place on the fictional planet of Valaria.

The first novella, The Watcher and the Thief, is a story about a Watcher named Hector Epsilona whose apprentice and nephew, Luc, gets cursed by a magician and seeks a way to reverse it. It is also about a thief known as Rift who attempts to steal an artifact from the Draigo, a mysterious semi-immortal species of great political and historical power. I like to refer to it as the worst two weeks of Octavian de Silv's life.

The second novella, The Hunter, the Myth, and the Cure, takes place about a decade after the events of TWatT and a plague of lycanthropy descends upon the population. It follows Draven Cozenson, a human gunslinger and well-known lycanthrope (werewolf) hunter, Octavian, an elf skinwalker and former Draigo messenger, and Reese Takari, a thirteen-year-old girl who gets kidnapped for reasons known only to her abductors. Draven seeks to get his work done, Octavian seeks the fate of the Draigo after the outbreak, and Reese seeks escape.

Magician's Bait is a short story occuring about four years after the events of THtMatC. The crown prince of the city Caenum, Damian, is abducted by someone known as a Stalker, a magician who broke the rules of magic and seeks nothing but more magical power. She intends to lure the city's magician into a trap and take her magic by force. Seventeen-year-old Reese is recruited by Luc (the same Luc as TWatT) to defeat the Stalker.

Well, since I’m once again in my Geoff era as we speak… I finally watched End to End. I approached it with little to no expectations other than seeing some beautiful landscapes but I ended up SOBBING.

First of all: kudos to those 3 boys for having the guts to walk so many miles and surviving in the Highlands. Going on adventures like that was always something I would love to do at some point in my life but would I REALLY do it? Maybe, but not alone.

What hit me the most is… the meaning. I can relate to many things George said there. The evergreen quote “it’s not the destination but the journey” was brought up (as you’d probably expect), but I’ve never been able to truly appreciated it until I saw this documentary.

SIDE NOTE: See, my overthinking nature doesn’t often let me appreciate the moment I’m currently living in. Everything is black or white and the grey area doesn’t often play a big role in my perception of the world, time, or my own life. I want to achieve things, I want them now, but when I do, there’s the void asking me: “What now though?”. And the overthinking starts again.

The correlation between their long hike and George’s experiences as an artist was very beautiful and I loved the transparency of his own words about touring, fears, feeling in certain ways, etc. I empathize with all of it. I’m not a popular songwriter in any way, shape or form but I have an artistic background and I TRULY understand what he tried to communicate through that documentary.

Interviews with local artists, amazing landscapes, realistic moments of the hike that are nothing to do with the perfectly curated IG profiles of many travel influencers, emotional moments, acoustic playing and singing next to a fireplace, a little bit of storytime and visiting Bristol… All of it did something to me.
