The channel was awarded a licence from the National Communications Authority of the Republic of Ghana in December 2007 and started broadcasting on December 12, 2008 on 6 p.m. The first programme on the channel was the movie Duma, followed by The Cosby Show, Friends and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

Viasat 1 was MTG's first venture in Africa and became the fifth terrestrial television network in Ghana after GTV, Metro TV, TV3 and TV Africa. In December 2016, MTG sold African business (Viasat 1 (Ghana), TV1 (Tanzania) and Modern African Production (MAP)) to Econet Media Group.

It is mainly a comedy show that takes place in a dysfunctional boarding school, mirroring the style of many American sitcoms. This show was aired on SABC3, or the commercial South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) television channel which carries programming in English and Afrikaans. Its main viewing audience are people ranging from 18 to 49, showing shows not only from South Africa, but also the US and UK. SABC3 inherited many shows from TV1, or South Africa’s “white-only” channel that existed before the apartheid. This clip features both the English language and the native Afrikaans, demonstrating how the channel is oriented more towards viewers that have had a bilingual education; furthermore, demonstrating cultural imperialism, based on how it imports media from western producers in the USA and United Kingdom.
