#Turians as mermaids

Commander Geordi LaForge beamed into a convention!

Among other things (including petting a baby dinosaur, repairing a Droid, meeting mermaids and a Turian, doing a quick graffiti, and contributing to two lightsaber battle Jedi victories while remaining unharmed), I found Data there... Hold on, has he been having secret Holmes game sessions without me?

And...

I met these guys! Their panel together was unhinged in the best way. 😆

They were excited to see me walk into the photo booth (I was the only Geordi at the big con). They exclaimed "Geordi! Geordi's here! Geordi, my friend!"

I got the professional photo signed by them all on Day 1 with a little time to talk with them. I also was able to catch them on Day 2 when their table lines were empty and have relatively long chats with them all one-on-one about various things.

I saw these and couldn't pass it up. So now I also have a new mission- meet LeVar Burton and have him sign his character shirt.

It was lovely meeting them. They're friendly and funny, just all-around great people. 💛

What I did in June

The writing routine, that elusive bitch. Still haven't nailed that one down.  

Anyway, I wrote some bits for two original stories but I'm not nearly close to anything publishable. I also wrote more on the Dom/sub fic, which has now developed feelings and inclinations of seriousness as if a silly fic is the right place for this. I might have to scrap it all to save the porn from the serious plot.

I published two things in June:

As part of the Handers Reverse Big Bang 2018 by @handers-time, I wrote a story to this image by @kitsunebaba:

The story is called Parting at the Veil and features Justice having the chance to go back into the fade, separating from Anders and what that would mean for Hawke’s and Anders’ relationship. 

I managed to only work on one other fic and it’s really just a short teaser chapter: 

Yin to Yang got a little teaser chapter, hinting at the little heist Grunt and Jinaya are going to pull off.

What did I read? Too little, that’s for sure. 

Open Book by @hollyand-writes. For Handers Reverse Big Bang 2018, a wonderfully written story about the deep bond between Hawke and Anders. 

Fathomless Depths by @wafflesrock16. A Mass Effect mermaid AU!!! How can you not love this? With turian mermaids and high seas and a shakarian romance, I’m totally smitten with this.

Submission or Violence by @amervalk. Also for the Handers Reverse Big Bang 2018, this rewrites the last battle of the mage rebellion in Kirkwall and gives Orsino a much better role.

A mysterious shaman has taken up residence on the Normandy and the crew put Primarch Victus’ plan into action.

-There is no way there isn’t some kind of...sci-fi mass effect-field generated hover motorcycle in this universe. She had one of those. That was her idea when she brought up “share a hobby” with Jaal because she liked working on her bike herself. Not exactly the same as modding a sniper rifle, but...it’s a start.

-She was part of a “girl gang” biker club before enlisting, although it was more of a volunteer group (it’s still on her resume). Mostly asari, few turians, some volus that rode in the passenger side...every now and then a quarian on Pilgrimage would wander in, curious about the technology used recreationally, and they would get to be honorary members.

-Twice River got emails from Quarians saying it helped them get through their Pilgrimage and what a big help they were 

-Saying goodbye to that group was the hardest part about leaving the Milky Way.

-Favorite animal is the otter. Yes, I know, but you can’t have a name like River and not have *some* appreciation for aquatic life.

-Has love for both the deep sea and deep space. Would joke that she ultimately chose space exploration because finding an alien to date was becoming more likely than finding a mermaid to date.

-When she was very little she took piano lessons, to help her focus. For a while she thought she would be a musician...part of her reasoning was because...there was no way she would ever accomplish what her parents did in the science field, so why bother?

-Still considers herself an artist. More that than a scientist, anyway. She gave up on that because she was never amazing at it, although she still plays from time to time, to relax.

It’s Mer-May! Turian Mermaids, anyone?

I’m back on my bull-shit and working on the sequel to Fathomless Depths. I’m nowhere near ready to publish anything, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t share something for this month. So here’s a snippet from the first chapter:

The volus were penguin herders who split their time between the glacier choked ocean and snow strewn shores. They flourished in the near permanent freeze, bundled in feathers, skins, and furs, as at home beneath the waves as the flocks they attended.

Their seas were too cold for permanent merian outposts. During the summer when the ice pack retreated, scouts would investigate and report any changes or resources of note. But they always returned before the biting jaws of fall, with ice nipping at their tail fins. 

It was considered the worst assignment in the merian military. No matter how intense the sun’s rays the waves always retained an uncomfortable chill. 

Now, despite his heightened station in the world, Garrus found himself swimming the frigid waters with an envoy of merian scholars and soldiers. An aggrieved growl stuttered in his chest. Whatever the volus herders had found had better be worth this trip, he thought irritably. 

The Normandy had been forced to turn back by heavy ice flows. Not built to sustain bludgeoning or gouging by glaciers, their merian escort had pressed on alone. 

“This water is disgusting,” an older merian commented. “What’s the human phrase? A frozen hell-hole?” 

Garrus hummed in annoyance. Lorik Qui’in had proven to be an invaluable asset when it came to negotiation with pirates or patrol discipline. The amber eyed merian was, however, a man accustomed to certain luxuries. Warm, tropical waters being one of those. 

“Do you think it’ll be colder near the island?” Lorik wondered aloud, adjusting his own fur seal cape. “I cannot imagine bare rock holding much warmth.”

“Quiet, Qui’in.” Garrus admonished subvocally. The old man’s bitching was starting to rub off on the rest of the envoy and the last thing he wanted was to listen to muttered complaints the rest of the way to the volus capital. 

Thankfully, Lorik kept his mouth shut and after what felt like a lifetime of plowing through the heavy waters, the rocky sea floor rolled up beneath them. Their arrival was heralded by the squawks and cries of thousands of penguins, their sleek, black and white bodies leaving trails of bubbles in their wake as they soared beneath the surf. 

The water smelled like guano and Garrus watched Lorik gag in revulsion as a passing penguin shit right next to him. Where was the fucking volus chieftain they were meeting? Garrus felt like he wanted to crawl out of his plates.

Up ahead, the squat, round forms of the volus finally bobbed into view. They were heavily layered in penguin pelts, heads adorned with crowns made from seashells and brightly polished stones. Garrus could barely make out the bulbous, yellow eyes from beneath their trappings when the most ornately decorated of the bunch swam up to him. 

“Tsk,” the chieftain slurped. “Greetings Palaven clan. I am Din Korlack, leader of the majestic Irune tribe.” He gestured stubby fingers bound in kelp at the other volus behind him. “Welcome to our shores. Your haste in this matter is most appreciated.”
