Tumblr Assignment #5
For this project we are to focus on Ceramic + Other. One component must be ceramic while the other component can be any other material. For this project I chose to create a "light house" building. I wanted to focus on decorative aspect of the clay. The design of the building was taken into consideration with understanding how the lower light base would project through the windows of the building. Not each window is carved out to give the idea that only certain windows or rooms are illuminated. I treated the surface with slips and stains to help give a rough, decorative texture of an older building. The body warped a little more than expected but I am fairly pleased with the outcome of the colors/texture. I will upload a picture with the light base at a later time.

"We are welcomed into sexuality by the scary equation that sex=death"
On pg 175. of Generation Me, Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D, attempts to explain the biggest potential risk associated with the hook up culture- STDS. More specifically, HIV/AIDS. Jean then continues to describes that contracting HIV/AIDS will not determine what your future will be like, but whether or not you will have a future at all. Scary.

The question I chose was "Are casual sexual experiences being normalized?"
I chose to use the video "Sext Me Later" to answer this.
I do believe that casual sexual experiences are being normalized. This video makes it sound like casual sexual experiences are pretty much the norm. They talk about how students are feeling like they're being pressured into casual hook ups by their peers! That makes it sound like it's the norm.

Hooking up as been facilitated by technology like the Internet and cell phones. It's pretty simple - if you're a teenager, you can meet lots of people on line, and then you ring them on their cells so you don't have to talk to their parents
This is a quote from the "Generation Me", by Jean Twenge.
Technology plays a large role in the way that Millineals interact with one another. Communication through the Internet and text messaging allows for relative anonymity - teenagers may informally talk about a variety of intimate topics without the pressures of face-to-face interaction, as body language and tone of voice have profound effects the emotional impact of a conversation. The perceived informality and constant interaction that technology provides allows teenagers to learn a lot about one another's lives in a short amount of time, creating a level of comfort that facilitates sexual encounters with people that have only known each other for a relatively short amount of time.
Relative anonymity coupled with the generation gap presented with technology allows teenagers to explore his or her on sexuality without fear of (harsh) judgment from parents, or any other older generation who appears to be sexually repressed by comparison.

Technology is definitely changing the way youth engages in relationships. It makes it much easier for youth to communicate and meet one another and does not require as much energy and thought for someone people to pair up.

"If we didn’t have these instant forms of communication (like text messaging and IM), hooking up would be dating because you’d actually have to put more than just minimal effort into making something happen." The Internet helps too, with its myriad hookup sites. Thousands of options are at the click of a mouse, many with pictures and erotic banter in a quick little profile."
This is a quote from Sex: Generation Prude Meets Generation Crude, which illustrates the role of technology playing in the ways youth engage in relationships. For example, as the Internet becomes more popular, more young individuals choose to pick their love partner online. This leads to an increase in hooking up among the youth.

What role does technology play in the ways youth engage in relationships?
“...‘if we didn’t have these instant forms of communication (like text messaging and IM), hooking up would be dating because you’d actually have to put more effort into making something happen.’ The Internet helps too, with its myriad hookup sites. Thousands of options are at the click of a mouse, many with pictures and erotic banter in a quick little profile” (Twenge, 169).
This quote shows that without the instant forms of communication, everything would be more complicated and as a result would not simply be hookups, but rather, relationships. This shows that technology makes it easier for youth to engage in relationships that hold less commitment. Youth engage more in hookups thanks to technology instead of dating.
