This #photobook by #吉行耕平 #KoheiYoshiyuki remains one of my cherished #books in my life. Thank you for documenting something that most people don’t want to document. Rest In Peace. The following text is from a statement realised by his gallery: “Yoshiyuki was born in the Hiroshima Prefecture in 1946 and passed away on January 21, 2022. Now beloved as one of Japan’s most important photographers, Yoshiyuki broke ground with his photographs taken in the early 1970s of couples engaged in sex acts in Tokyo’s public parks, often accompanied by voyeuristic onlookers. His daring documentation of forbidden acts forced viewers to reckon with their own private lives and desires as well as the psychic unease felt collectively by the Japanese people following decades of loss and defeat for the country. It was not until 2007 that these photographs resurfaced in The Park, the artist’s first U.S. show at Yossi Milo Gallery. Photographs from the exhibition have been exhibited around the world, including at the Tate Modern, London’s exhibition Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera; the 5th Berlin Biennial and 7th Gwangju Biennale; the 2012 Liverpool Biennial and 9th Moscow Photo Biennale; and in the 55th Venice Biennale exhibition curated by Massimiliano Gioni.” In correspondence with Philip Gefter, who wrote a shining review of The Park for The New York Times in 2007, Yossi Milo wrote “The photographs are specifically of their time and place and reflect the social and economic spirit of the 1970s in Japan. Yet the work is also very contemporary. With new technologies providing the means to spy on each other, a political atmosphere that raises issues about the right to privacy and a cultural climate obsessed with the personal lives of everyday people, themes of voyeurism and surveillance are extremely topical and important in the U.S. right now.” (at Tokyo, Japan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZapNp6v0JQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Francis Alÿs “There is something peculiar about the times we live in, and with them, a different expectation of the artist's role. When the structure of a society collapses, when politicians and media have lost credit and terror invades daily life, society turns toward culture in pursuit of answers. The painter is expected to look at its reality without any filters … yet, is the artist able to assume those roles from a moral, intellectual, and emotional point of view?’’ - Francis Alÿs, Visual Artist. During the Middle Ages all dogs were driven from inner cities for hygienic reasons. The disappearance of dogs from city life was once the subject of a project by Belgian student of architecture - Francis Alÿs. Alÿs has lived and worked as an artist in Mexico city for over two decades. He is both a critical and poetic writer of chronicles about city life. His drawings, paintings, films and objects touch on Latin American culture and heritage. Art may not be able to save the world, but it can be a cause for reflection. Alÿs country of birth remains unaware of his talents, but internationally Alÿs is a renowned artist. A new exhibition of Alÿs work ‘As Long as I’m Walking’ will be shown at the ‘Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts’, Lausanne, Switzerland. This solo show presents an overview of the artist’s video work from the last thirty years, with an emphasis on one of the central themes in Alÿs’s practice - walking. In 2022 Alÿs will represent Belgium at the ‘Venice Biennale’. ‘As Long as I’m Walking’, ‘Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts’, Lausanne, Switzerland, October 15, 2021 - January 16, 2022. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #antwerp #mexicocity #architect #walking #political #drawings #paintings #films #objects #latinamerica #culture #surreal #humour #muséecantonaldesbeauxarts #aslongasimwalking #visualartist #francisalÿs (at Lausanne, Switzerland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWkx8X5s2dE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Francis Alÿs “I think that when you are young you are more arrogant: you just do it without trying to justify it and sometimes you hit it right and sometimes you hit it wrong, it doesn’t matter. When I talk to young artists I am very envious of them: it’s very difficult to regain that moment, you lose that immediacy. It still happens, but it’s more of an effort to achieve and maybe the work becomes too complex, and I am afraid of that. There is a part of not understanding that happens when you are producing that is important: sometimes to name things kills the joke and you can lose that creative openness.” - Francis Alÿs, Visual Artist. Francis Alÿs (b. 1959, Antwerp, Belgium) lives and works in Mexico City. Alÿs originally trained as an architect but it was the confrontation with issues of urbanisation and social unrest in his new country of adoption, Mexico, that inspired his decision to become a visual artist. He consistently directs his imaginative sensibility towards anthropological and geopolitical concerns. These are centred around observations of - and engagements with - everyday life. Alÿs has described his works as "a sort of discursive argument composed of episodes, metaphors or parables". His multifaceted projects include public actions, installations, video paintings and drawings. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #antwerp #mexicocity #architect #walking #political #drawings #paintings #films #objects #latinamerica #culture #surreal #humour #muséecantonaldesbeauxarts #aslongasimwalking #visualartist #francisalÿs (at Lausanne, Switzerland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWkxnTJsrj2/?utm_medium=tumblr
