I went to a friend’s graduation (undergrad and masters) at Tulane University this weekend and it was an absolute mess.
there was a cringe speech from a white male keynote speaker that basically was full of empty platitudes like “you youngsters shouldn’t spend so much time in front of your phones and should not get all your opinions from your little twitter” and “one day you’ll be the civil rights leaders of the future !!” as if they didn’t disband the encampments just within the month. They also introduced the keynote speaker with a James Baldwin quote, which cracked me up. And there was so much talk of “tense” or “interesting” times the students exist in, and referencing the suffragettes and 1960s civil rights movements in comparison to the graduating class… all while refusing to name the Palestinian elephant in the room.
and then a whole plane flew a banner of the Israeli flag around the stadium for like a half hour
It was absolutely mind blowing.

It was hot yesterday, so I holed up underneath the stadium parking garage. Good thing it makes for some interesting scenes.

2024 NFL Draft: Five takeaways from National's 16-7 win over American in Senior Bowl
Tumblr media
MOBILE, Ala. -- The National Team defeated the American Team, 16-7, in the 2024 Reese's Senior Bowl on Saturday at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the campus of the University of South Alabama.
The game capped off a week-long job interview, including three days of practices, for more than 100 of the 2024 NFL Draft's top senior (and select underclassman) prospects.
Here are five takeaways from the 75th annual all-star contest.
The early star on Saturday was South Carolina's Spencer Rattler, who threw a pretty 29-yard touchdown pass on a fade to Georgia WR Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, giving the American Team a 7-0 lead. Rattler worked the first two series of the game, completing 4-of-4 passes for 65 yards and the TD. Rattler was named the MVP of the game on Saturday. He threw a pick on the first day of practice this week but otherwise had a very respectable showing, arguably as the most consistent QB throughout the week.
Oregon's Bo Nix also led a touchdown drive to tie the game for the National Team, fitting in a tight-window pass to Minnesota TE Brevyn Spann-Ford for a 2-yard score. Nix started slowly this week but gradually improved, especially in red-zone work.
Notre Dame's Sam Hartman had a tough game, completing 7-of-25 passes for 69 yards and a pick. He took the majority of the National Team snaps with Washington's Michael Penix Jr. not playing in the game. Hartman was under duress on several snaps and never really was able to get into a passing rhythm. Tennessee QB Joe Milton III completed 9-of-13 passes but struggled to get much going. He took a sack deep in his own territory on his first snap, misfired on an open checkdown pass and threw an end-zone interception, one of his two picks on the day. The other one was a clear overthrow right after he'd had his best stretch of the game.
Neither Tulane's Michael Pratt nor South Alabama's Carter Bradley (son of Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley) had much success either. Pratt (4 for 10, 45 yards, INT) and Bradley (1 for 6, 6 yards) both suffered from poor protection.

Memphis: 2023 Liberty Bowl Champions
Tumblr media
Memphis football had not won a game as an underdog all season, but the Tigers dispatched Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl 36-26 on Friday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
Memphis (10-3) jumped out to a 19-0 first quarter lead and held on during some precarious moments in the fourth quarter to get to a rare double-digit win season.
Quarterback Seth Henigan was excellent again, breaking the all-time passing record for Memphis football in the third quarter. He finished 24-of-34 for 364 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for a touchdown to pace the Tigers.
Iowa State (7-6) fought back after the rough start and had some momentum near the end of the first half. But Memphis did just enough to stay out of striking distance.
The Cyclones entered as 10.5 point favorites but struggled through most of the game, and the Tigers earned the win in their home stadium in front of an announced 48,789 fans mostly split between Memphis and Iowa State.
Memphis football came out swinging The Tigers would've been hard-pressed to put together a much better start. Henigan hit Demeer Blankumsee for a 70-yard touchdown on the opening drive, and then the Tigers defense came up with a fourth-down stop to get the ball right back. Henigan rushed for a touchdown and then found former Iowa State receiver Joe Scates for a 51-yard touchdown, and the Tigers were flying. Slow starts have been an issue, but almost everything went well out of the gate.
Seth Henigan etched his place in Memphis history Henigan finished his third season as Memphis' starting quarterback by setting the Tigers' record for career passing yards. He found Scates for a 17-yard gain late in the third quarter to pass Brady White as the leading passer in Memphis football history. Henigan has 10,773 career yards and announced before the game he'll return for next season and will be well-positioned to break basically all of the Tigers' career passing records.
Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht had success Memphis had been worried about stopping freshman RB Abu Sama III, who rushed for 276 yards and three touchdowns in Iowa State's last game against Kansas State. The Tigers defense shut Sama down early, but could not contain receiver Jayden Higgins, who had five catches for 140 yards in the first half.
Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht threw for 446 yards and three touchdowns and improved as the game went on, but Memphis always had enough of a lead to keep the Cyclones in check.
The Tigers defense impressed Memphis had spent most of the season engaging in shootouts and generally struggling to stop its opponents. Defensive coordinator Matt Barnes left for Mississippi State before this game, so linebackers coach Jordon Hankins was serving as interim defensive coordinator.
Iowa State couldn't get its running game going, and the Tigers were able to get pressure on Becht throughout the afternoon.
Memphis has momentum heading into next season The Tigers will no doubt be among the favorites and possibly the favorite heading into next season's AAC title race. Of the three teams that finished ahead of them, Tulane lost its coach, UTSA lost its quarterback and SMU is headed to the ACC. The stakes will be higher with the expanded playoff, and Memphis will have real expectations at the beginning of next season. Friday's win gives Silverfield and his staff something concrete to build off as they prepare for a critical 2024 campaign.

Scientists Finally Solved the Mystery of How the Mayan Calendar Works!
We were thinking too small all along.
— By Tim Newcomb | April 20, 2023 | Popular Mechanics

Scholars show how multiple planet movements tie into the 819-day Mayan calendar.
The 819 days of the calendar must be viewed across a 45-year time period to fully understand.
The movements of all major planets visible to the ancient Mayans fit into this extended calendar.
The Mayan calendar’s 819-day cycle has confounded scholars for decades, but new research shows how it matches up to planetary cycles over a 45-year span. That’s a much broader view of the tricky calendar than anyone previously tried to take.
In a study published in the journal Ancient Mesoamerica, two Tulane University scholars highlighted how researchers never could quite explain the 819-day count calendar until they broadened their view.
“Although prior research has sought to show planetary connections for the 819-day count, its four-part, color-directional scheme is too short to fit well with the synodic periods of visible planets,” the study authors write. “By increasing the calendar length to 20 periods of 819-days a pattern emerges in which the synodic periods of all the visible planets commensurate with station points in the larger 819-day calendar.”
That means the Mayans took a 45-year view of planetary alignment and coded it into a calendar that has left modern scholars scratching their heads in wonder.
While ancient Mayan culture offered various calendar types, the one that baffled scholars the most was this 819-day calendar discovered in glyphic texts. Researchers have long believed this calendar was associated with planetary movements, especially the synodic periods—when a planet appears visually to return to the same location in the sky, as seen from Earth—of key planets. However, each planet moves quite differently and matching up multiple planets into an 819-day span didn’t seem to make sense.
But it does when you look at it over 16,380 days (roughly 45 years), not just 819 days. That’s a total of 20 819-day timelines.
Mercury was always the starting point for the tricky timeline because its synodic period—117 days—matches nicely into 819. From there, though, we need to start extrapolating out the 819 number, and if you chart 20 cycles of 819, you can fit every key planet into the mix.
And Mars may be the kicker for the overall length. With a 780-day synodic period, 21 periods match exactly to 16,380, or 20 cycles of 819. Venus needs seven periods to match five 819-day counts, Saturn has 13 periods to fit with six 819-day counts, and Jupiter 39 periods to hit 19 819-counts.
“Rather than limit their focus to any one planet,” the authors write, “the Maya astronomers who created the 819-day count envisioned it as a larger calendar system that could be used for predictions of all the visible planet’s synod periods, as well as commensuration points with their cycles in the Tzolk’in and Calendar Round.”

A group of terrorists, mostly three kingpins of diabolical intent: Lander, Dahlia, and Fasil, have orchestrated a horrific plot to drop bombs at New Orleans Tulane stadium. This occurs on Superbowl Sunday, amidst trifling delays from the inferior Sugar Bowl Sunday. They have secured a blimp and an explosive made from plastic. The President of the USA will be attending, and secret service are in desperation to thwart a terrible calamity. As Thomas Harris pulls you through the story, he never lets on whether the hit will succeed. Coming from the author of ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, he has a lot of pull to deliver a gruesome conclusion. The thrill of it is, wondering whether Black Sunday will play as planned, rain or shine. Special Agent Kabakov is in charge of averting disaster, and he has brutal means of doing so… after all, you would beat a terrorist by stooping down to his level. This means drugging the perps, having them secured in maximum security hospital beds, euthanasia.. but Lander and Dahlia are the smiths, Bonnie and Clyde, &tc. If the blimp implodes without a hitch, what is their aim? Maybe they’ll kill the president. The maximum number of casualties possible is the best bet. They just need to get the balloon from South Libya, and they need to retain the plastic as Kabakov sniffs it out. Will the antagonists achieve their goal, even while blimp-infiltration units and bomb squads close in on them from all sides? #blacksunday #thomasharris
