Collection Connections: Horse Series
Lon Megargee
American (U.S.), 1883-1960
 Wild Horse Race
 woodblock print
Gift from the Bernard and Jeanette Schmidt Estate, 2012. 2013.5.11
Megargee evokes the spirit of a wild horse race with the sweeping, curved lines and stark color contrast.  He utilized the concept of using positive and negative space in this woodblock print. In a sense, using negative space creates a visual effect that tricks the eye to see an image. Here, there are horses and cowboys full of action and excitement.

Some pics from this past weekend’s show at the #tucsonmuseumofart #holidaymarket ... a great way for #solitaryartist like me to spend time with other #tucsonartists and friends. I remembered to take selfies with a number of people I hadn’t seen in a long time... the weather was perfect too- not too hot, but sunny. Here’s to having great creative friends! #artfestival #tucsonarizona #downtowntucson #metalsmith #handmade (at Tucson, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5T44NDh0p5/?igshid=tm6teavfowhq

Leaning into the rainbow. . . . I've been very busy this week! I started a new day job continuing my career as a web developer at @anchorwave and I'm doing a lot more freelance photography lately picking up assignments for @visittucson and @tucsonmuseumofart as well as some portrait shoots and editing shots of a recent wedding. I've also been hitting the gym close to every night in the long process of getting into shape. I am definitely ready for a great weekend. ___________________________________________________ #igers_tucson #ig_arizona #whyilovewhereilive #sanctuarycove #arizonahighways #az365 #arizona #weroamarizona #koldnews13 #arizona_landscapes #capturearizona #arizonahighways #canon_photos #ig_southwest #visittucson #conquerarizona #fox10phoenix #Beon12 #explorearizona_ #abc15 #exploring_arizona #westbysouthwest #tucsonnewsnow #azhiking https://ift.tt/32tVe25

Collection Connections: Horse Series
Richard Thorpe McLean
American (U.S.), b. 1934
 Banana Beau, 1980
 serigraph, 211/250
Gift of Sarah Schuster. 1995.233
Though considering himself a still-life painter, McLean’s most popular theme are realistic horses and their riders. Basing many of his images from horse magazines, whether of racehorses and jockeys, horses on a farm, or military horses, the artist’s work has hyper- realistic, photographic qualities.

For the past two weeks I’ve been working on re-designing and rebuilding my old clunky #jewelry #displaycases from the 1970s… I first wanted to make them lighter and more easy to move… Then they needed to be taller so the work was more visible . . . . First I took out the bottom brace board and heavy heavy stack of drawers… Then, I added removable shelving (and other places to put shelves) underneath the display box… After that I added 8 inches of height by putting the entire thing on stilts with casters. Although I love the wood, it was getting pretty beat up looking and needed a facelift- I wanted to make the coloring more neutral so that the work would shine, so I painted all the outside with chalkboard paint. The only thing left I need to do is design a banner that I will use for the skirt which shall have some close up images of my work and my Design Collection name: #cosmosmoonjewelry. . . . This is a project that I wanted to do for about eight years now and I finally had the energy and time to get it done before my holiday shows and sales. I will post a photo of them all finished once the banners are installed and we are at the #tucsonmuseumofart #holidaymarket ! . . . PS: I I asked around about display heights and read that approximately 38 to 40 inches is good for jewelry displays at shows. My new cabinets height are 38 inches – I decided to make them a bit shorter because I am only 5 foot one) #redesigned #artdisplays #artjewelry #furnituremakeover #tucsonartist (at Cosmo's Moon Jewelry) https://www.instagram.com/p/B35ImzFBlXm/?igshid=3sfrcq32pmez

Last month our 'Forbideen Cuba' team was welcomed to the Arizona International Film Festival by a warm phone call from KXCI (Tucson Community Radio) asking us if we had 15 minutes to talk about our film on the air. As we had just landed and were scheduled to screen that night, we were more than happy to preach chapter and verse from the 'Forbidden Cuba' bible. Director Art Jones and co-cinematographer / co-producer Raphael Duverney grabbed a cab straight to the funky-in-the-best-way downtown were they let the faithful know. Later that evening we had a sold out screening and a very lively 45 minute panel discussion. I also learned that KXCI is home to one of the best blues reviews around. Tune in Saturday afternoons and give Marty Kool a listen. Watch this space for news of the 'Forbidden Cuba's' continued film festival run. supporters. -- Thursday, April 27, 2017 @ 4:30 PM #ArizonaInternationalFilmFestival #GrandJuryPrizeBridgingCulturalDiversity #BestOfFestNarrativeFeature #AIFF #Tucson #ForbiddenCuba #ArtJones #GuerillaFilm #RaphaelDuverney #JeremyMikolajczak #TucsonMuseumOfArt #GuerillaFilmBrigade #BenWolf #AndrewJernigan #CocoVincon #Havana #Cienfuegos #Vinales #Santiago #WeCantGetArrestedByATrombonePlayer #GillBigelow #TheFrenchman #TedFuller #TucsonRocks #BackToVisitSoon #Mission Forbidden Cuba - Trailer https://vimeo.com/158077339 Many thanks to our tireless cast, hardworking crew and very generous Kickstarter supporters: Art Jones, Raphael Duvernay, Corentin Vinçon, Joe Foley, Benjamin Wolf, Andrew Jernigan, John Downing Bonafede, Noah Wehle, Pascal Akesson, Julia Gorbach, David Marantz, Rafael Garcia, Mila Matveeva, Matt Gordon, Raphael Kourilsky, Fox Cie Marty Kool's Blues Review https://kxci.org/programs/blues-review/ (at KXCI Community Radio)

Collection Connections: Horses Series
Oscar E. Berninghaus
American (U.S.), 1874-1960
Team of Horses
pencil on paper
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Mitchell. 1985.6.5
Best known as a member of the Taos Society of Artists, Berninghaus looked at the Southwest with a keen eye for elements of detail, shape, and color. This image of a pair of horses evidences the artist’s focus on the horse on the left and its gear. It can be a challenge for artists to render horses because of their unique body forms, but another degree of difficulty is added with the placement of the harnesses, bridles, and bits.
The transportation of people and goods occurred for centuries via horses pulling carriages, wagons, and carts. In the West, wagon trains and Conestoga wagons moved across the plains and mountains for trade and settlement. Berninghaus traveled via train, and significantly, Overland trails so he was exposed to horse travel.
