Should every marketplace build its own reputation system or “outsource” this task? While many marketplaces are building systems tailored to their specific needs (...), advocates of using standalone trust systems argue that there are universal trust parameters that are consistent across different sharing verticals.
Trust in the sharing economy: who will succeed, and how?
Really interesting article on the key aspect of the sharing economy : Trust and reputation. Many companies are entering this area to design a one and only place where you could see the "reputation profile" of your interlocutor.
Until now, many have failed as "One of the main challenges they name was convincing p2p marketplaces to integrate their system into their platform."
Facebook has recently hired the two co-founders of Legit, a startup that has been developing an online trust reputation framework for the sharing economy. This interest confirms it is going to be an important aspect of our human interactions in the near future. Facebook and its amount of data about its users, their life and habits could have a huge advantage on the online reputation system.
But as the author points out:
do we want one company controlling our online identity and becoming the sole gatekeeper of our online reputation? Aren’t there alternatives?
Great question to explore...

>The biggest issue the new sharing economy is currently facing is one of trust. After issues like the Airbnb debacle and high-end car sharing service HiGear’s closure due to theft, it's clear that trust issues are the main barrier preventing sharing from becoming mainstream. >The answer that everyone seems to be looking for is a some sort of global reputation system. There has been a lot of talk about a single "reputation score" that you could take with you in any new service. At a first glance the idea seems like a winner: with every action you do in the web affecting the score, it would be easy to find the rotten apples. >However, it turns out this idea is fundamentally flawed. Do current reputation systems like Klout or Trustcloud do an effective enough job of establishing trust to work for collaborative consumption services? Shareable: Aggregation, Not Algorithms, Is The Key To Establishing Trust Online
