What do you think of people saying that John had an eating disorder? The First time i came across This i didnt think much. I remember that Yoko addressed This in Interview and negated the claim. But them there is Elliot casually commenting on John use of diet pills. But also, If he had an eating disorder other people would have Said something about his behavior.
T/W: eating disorder
Hi @dopebananadetective!
I think they’re 100% right.
The problem with male eating disorders is that they were not properly understood then and even now they get nowhere near the proper recognition. That means that people can observe the behaviours of an eating disorder but not realise what it is. But people did comment. May was horrified looking at him in the late 70s being all skin and bone, Robert Rosen in Nowhere Man talked about John’s obsession with weight, Seaman talked about their diet and Paul was angry when Yoko picked the healthiest option off the menu for John in the late 70s. Even back in the early 70s Paul’s critical in Too Many People of ‘too many people losing weight’. Who do you think that’s directed at? Yoko may say he didn’t have one but Yoko says lots of things that are incompatible with reality. Admitting John had one would also shine an unpleasant light onto to the fact that she probably also had an eating disorder and definitely encouraged him at his skinniest to look like that and encouraged him on his diet (this latter part isn’t speculation, she’s talked about it in interviews about how great he looked in 1980 as if it was a dual project). It’s not just one way either, John hiding her chocolates when pregnant spring to mind.
I don’t want to get into it too deeply but as someone whose had an eating disorder, John’s is visible from a mile off. It’s the excuse of just needing to lose that ‘extra five pounds’ at 135 pounds 5’10, his obsession with fat Elvis and his own ‘fat Elvis’ period, waxing lyrical about the highly controlled diet and that all his bones are visible despite not historically having that build. I’m similar to John in the fact that I’m not naturally stick thin. I know what it takes to get that skinny and keep it. It isn’t pretty.
If you know what you’re looking at, it’s as clear as day. Elliot to me was just another in a long line of people confirming what I could already tell from pictures alone.
