The Sarcophagus constructed around Reactor 4 after the accident was built by Sredmash, the Soviet ministry responsible for building nuclear weapons and power stations.
Sredmash unit US-605 was formed with the specific task of constructing the Sarcophagus. The personnel in the unit rotated out in two month shifts to minimize radiation exposure, as the worst radiation conditions in the zone were found in the area immediately surrounding the husk of the reactor, known as the “Special Zone”. Radiation levels only allowed liquidators mere minutes-or just seconds in some areas-to complete their assigned tasks. Especially dangerous was the pile of debris on the north side of the reactor, a tangled mess of concrete, pipes, fuel, and graphite, all dangerously radioactive.
The work of clearing debris and contaminated soil had to be conducted remotely by robotic bulldozers or armored combat engineering vehicles normally used to clear mines. The two large cranes in the first image are DEMAG cranes, imported from West Germany at enormous cost specifically for the construction of the Sarcophagus. Operators for these cranes sat in their cabins protected by lead sheets 15 centimeter thick. They worked in total darkness, lifting the enormous prefabricated pieces of the Sarcophagus into place using only CCTV footage from a camera mounted on the hooks and radio instructions from Sredmash commanders sitting in a nearby command bunker.
It was far too dangerous to send up welders or riveters to join the pieces, so concrete pumps were used to cement the prefabricated metal parts of the Sarcophagus in place. Parts of the Sarcophagus would arrive from foundries, then be lifted into place by the cranes. Concrete was poured into and on them by concrete pump trucks until the section was considered to be adequately secured. Engineers then detonated remote control explosive bolts attaching the crane wires to the section, and work would begin on the next section. Construction was conducted 24 hours a day, floodlights illuminating the site at night. The frantic pace was set by insane Communist party deadlines and concern over continued emissions of radionuclides. The Soviet government was eager to restart the other three reactors to regain some of their tarnished reputation and show the world that Chernobyl had been made safe. Ultimately, the Sarcophagus would be officially completed on November 30th, 1986, seven months and four days after the explosion.
[Image description: the Sarcophagus, an angular construction of black metal, sits completed over the gaping maw of the hole left by the explosion. It has three sides; a northern and western wall, as well as a roof. The Cascade Wall, the southern wall, is a series of four terraces. It covers a pile of debris blown out of the reactor as well as a sizable hole in the wall of the reactor hall. The western wall is a reinforcing structure for the reactor hall walls, with several buttresses running up its face. The roof is slightly sloped and covers the hole left in the roof by the explosion and prevents the emission of more radionuclides from the remains of the reactor. The area around the reactor is level earth, brought in to cover up the contaminated soil. Heavy construction machinery is scattered throughout the image, with two enormous tracked cranes on either side of the reactor. They tower over the twenty story reactor building.]

Excavators (hydraulic) are large construction machines with a boom, dipper or stick, bucket, and cab mounted on a rotating platform called the “house.” The house is supported by a track or wheeled undercarriage. They’re a natural progression from steam shovels, and they’re often referred to as power shovels.
Hydraulic fluid, hydraulic cylinders, and hydraulic motors are used to perform all of the movements and functions of a hydraulic excavator. Hydraulic cylinders operate in a fundamentally different way than cable-operated excavators, which employ winches and steel ropes to achieve movements.
Diggers, motorized shovels, and 360-degree excavators are all terms used to describe excavators. “360” is a commonly used abbreviation. By comparison with the backhoe, tracked excavators are also referred to as “trackhoes.”

What Is Best In Our Putzmeister Concrete Boom Pump
Extended hoses are required because a standard truck-mounted pump cannot spread concrete straight from the hose tip of the pump line above the fourth or fifth story. A placement boom gets around this restriction. The structural engineer or building inspector may forbid dragging a hose across a post-tensioned deck due to their concerns regarding the post-tensioning cable profiles.
A placement boom can frequently feed concrete from a central location to the entire floor, depending on the scale of the project. A crane and concrete bucket is a popular substitute, but it is sluggish and ties up the crane. Although the place and finish crew are paid a fixed rate, their inefficient functioning lengthens the cycle time between bucket loads. The crane can only bucket concrete; it cannot perform any other tasks, which hurts the general contractor and other crafts. The complete assembly departs the construction site until the next deck pour, when the boom is remounted on the pump truck at the end of the pour. Using our putzmeister concrete boom pump and a specialized laying boom that stay on the jobsite for the life of the project is the second option. The positioning boom and pump are available for monthly rental. It is utilized to install all raised decks and vertical concrete, and it becomes a set monthly expense. Despite being significantly more expensive per cubic yard than just renting a traditional boom truck, this method uses all of the concrete, which minimizes the cost per cubic yard.
Boom-related components There are numerous bases to which the placement boom can be fastened. When mounted on a tower crane mast, a placement boom can be placed inside or outside the building's footprint. Because of its strength and adaptability, it can be utilized in situations where extending a pump truck's outriggers with its base outside of the building footprint is not feasible due to adjacent electrical wires.

Advantages Of Concrete Boom Pump Truck
Concrete pump trucks are utilized on construction sites where obtaining concrete is challenging or when a significant amount of concrete is needed. In addition to saving time and labor costs, the concrete pump truck can be used on building sites with restricted access, including skyscrapers or basements. The basic idea behind our concrete boom pump truck is simple: the truck has to pour the concrete. Large, diesel-powered trucks with a strong pump and an extensible sectioned boom or cylinder design are the most common type of concrete pump truck. The concrete is carried to the pump truck by a cement mixer, also known as a truck mixer or batching plant. The cement mixing machine must rotate continuously to keep the concrete from hardening or building up. Additionally, a small amount of water is required to keep the concrete from solidifying. The truck mixer will discharge the ready-mixed concrete into the truck's bay while the pump is operating.
Why choose us
Large buckets of concrete were lifted to the required location by cranes on the enormous construction sites. The crane's limited capacity to lift a single bucket at a time which typically only held two cubic yards of concrete was the largest obstacle. Consequently, a concrete pumping machine was needed. Concrete pumps were so created. A concrete pump, to put it simply, is an essential component of every construction project since it moves liquid mixed concrete from containers to the job site, where it has to be filled. Two fundamental varieties of concrete pumps exist. One is larger, known as a boom or truck-mounted pump, and is utilized for large road and highway projects. It is often installed on a truck or semi-trailer and uses an automated robotic arm to precisely put the concrete where it is needed. For smaller tasks like constructing a sidewalk or ground slab, the other type of pump also known as a trailer, line, or stationary pump is employed. Steel or flexible hoses are used, and they are fastened to the pump's outlet. These connected tubes lead to the location where the concrete must be laid.
