CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY 2005

There is a play with a very similar concept! It recently ran under the title Tweets aus Versailles (Tweets from Versailles).

Google indicates that it was staged as early as 2022 and has since toured Germany with two different actors, Franziska Troegner and more recently, Gisa Flake.

The one-woman show in which "Liselotte" breaks the fourth wall to tell the audience about her life revolves around a script based on her letters, excerpts of which are grouped together according to topics (e. g. Liselotte trying to get used to life at Versailles, her marriage to Monsieur, her relationship with her children, looking back at her life and times as she grows older). Each topic represents a stage in her life and is underlined by a change of costume. Contrary to Glorious, Tweets from Versailles operates with modern clothes, but those were so well-chosen and reflected Liselotte's present state of mind and/or age so well that I really enjoyed it. My favourite was a brocade evening gown worn during a segment on court life.

Whenever Liselotte leaves the stage to change, a band of musicians and a singer perform music from Liselotte's lifetime. In the performance I saw, and I cannot tell whether this was scripted beforehand or improvised in the moment, Liselotte, telling the audience about her son and how proud she is of him for being such a clever, talented young man who even plays the flute well, focussed the band's flautist and gave him the most "mummy loves you" smile. From then on, every reference of her son was followed by an enthusiastic smile and nod to the flautist - needless to say, the audience was in stitches.

There is of course some dramatic license and scripting necessary to make a play out of Liselotte's letters, and additionally to that, some stellar acting to avoid the event becoming a very static traditional reading. Personally, I was awed by Gisa Flake actually drinking from a "wine" bottle and (intentionally very disgustingly, absolutely mannerless, I might add) eating, or rathr, defiling a box of chocolates on stage while also managing to still deliver her lines. That is no mean feat, and I for my part have to say that Gisa Flake brought Liselotte absolutely to life.

Tweets aus Versailles is sporadically performed across Germany at music festivals and the like. I was really happy to have had the opportunity to go see it.

The music (by lautten compagney BERLIN) and singing (Alice Lackner) were just as stellar as Gisa Flake's performance and added another facette to the immersive experience of Flake's Liselotte monologically conversing about her life and times with the audience.

Here's the trailer, which, needless to say, is in German, but I suppose you do get a feeling for Flake's portrayal of Liselotte and of course, the wonderful music, regardless of whether you speak German or not.

Das DDR Museum freut sich auf Frau Troegner!

Bei unserer morgigen Veranstaltung werden wir die bekannte und beliebte Schauspielerin Franziska Troegner zu Besuch haben und wir freuen uns schon sehr! Im Rahmen unserer Veranstaltungsreihe „Schäfers Stündchen“ wird der Schauspieler und Sohn der Schauspiellegende Gerd E. Schäfer, Alexander G. Schäfer, ab 19 Uhr mit Frau Troegner plaudern. Zusätzlich liest die Schauspielerin aus Ihrem Buch „Fürs Schubfach zu dick“ und steht den Gästen anschließend ausführlich Rede und Antwort.
