Note
For the character asks, Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Favorite thing about them: His fate of falling into the chocolate river and then being sucked up the pipe that takes the chocolate to the Fudge Room is colorful and memorable. The perfect outlandish "punishment" for a child who eats too much candy in an over-the-top dark-comedy morality tale.
Least favorite thing about them: Two words: fat shaming. The portrayal of his vice hasn't aged well since 1964. Instead of emphasizing that eating nonstop junk food is unhealthy and that Augustus is harming himself, the book's apparent viewpoint is just that fat people are disgusting and overeating is sickening to watch. At least his lapping up the melted chocolate from Wonka's river, not caring that the chocolate is going to be made into candy that other people will eat, shows that he's rude and selfish too, so the disgust aimed at him isn't entirely about his overeating or his weight.
Three things I have in common with them:
*I love food to a fault, especially chocolate.
*I'm overweight.
*I sometimes impulsively broke rules as a child.
Three things I don’t have in common with them:
*I'm not a little boy.
*I make an effort to eat healthy most of the time.
*I'm not German, as he is in most adaptations, though I do have some German ancestry on my mother's side.
Favorite line:
From the book, as he laps up the melted chocolate:
"This stuff is fabulous! Gosh, I need a bucket to drink it properly!"
From the 1971 film, when the TV reporter asks him how he feels about finding the Golden Ticket:
"Feel sorry for Wonka. It's gonna cost him a fortune in fudge."
From the 2005 film, when he recounts finding the Golden Ticket:
"I am eating ze Vonka bar, und I taste something that is not chocolate or coconut or valnut or peanut butter or nougat or butterbrittle or caramel or schprinkles, so I look and I find ze Golden Ticket."
brOTP: Possibly his mother, though she's brought him up badly.
OTP: None.
nOTP: Any adult.
Random headcanon: After his traumatic experience at the factory, he'll give up candy and grow up to be a fitness and health food guru – yet be just as obnoxious about it as he was in his junk food greed.
Unpopular opinion: I wish the adaptations wouldn't always portray him as German. It's blatant borrowing from the 1971 film, and I'd like at least one adaptation to get out of the 1971 film's shadow, more than any of them have done so far.
Song I associate with them:
The first iteration of "Oompa Loompa" from the 1971 film:

"Augustus Gloop" from the 2005 film:

The Choccy Awards 2021 Winners: Part 1/2
Thank you Everyone for voting! It's been so exciting watching the winners change, and keeping track of it all, so now we announce the winners for each category- the ones you most voted for! This is all for fun, so please don't be offended if what you voted for did not win- it means virtually nothing.
Best Portrayal of Charlie Bucket
West End
Yes, it has been selected that the West End perfomance of Charlie Bucket was in fact, the best. This includes perfomances from Jack Costello, Tom Klenerman, Isaac Rouse and Louis Suc among other amazing child performers. These Charlies have such a sweet sound to their voice, and are portrayed with such energy that they win the overall best!

Second Place: Freddie Highmore
Best Portrayal of Augustus Gloop
Broadway
And so the Broadway performance of Augustus Gloop has taken the lead! Played primarily by F. Michael Haynie who brought both a funny but also monsterous perfomance to Augustus, making him more fit for his disturbing demise up the pipe. And did we mention that 'More of him to love' is a bop?

Second Place: Phillip Wiegratz
Best Portrayal of Violet Beauregarde
AnnaSophia Robb
This fiesty girl with a blonde bob wins the best portrayal of Violet! In the role, she acts strong-headed and always with her eyes on the prize. Her performance in this role means she must be crowned queen of the Violets!

Second Place: Broadway
Best Portrayal of Veruca Salt
Broadway
What makes a good Veruca Salt? well, clearly a Russian ballet dancer with a bunch of sass gets you there. Broadway Veruca (Primarily played by Emma Pfaeffle) is en pointe with her performance showing excellent ballet skills in both 'When Veruca Says' & 'Veruca's Nutcracker Sweet' and the personality given for the role was incredible!

Second Place: Julie Dawn Cole
Best Portrayal of Mike Teavee
Broadway
It seems like Broadway Mike Teavee is winning! Played Primarily by Mike Wartella, he takes the lead with this perfomance. He's a funny role to watch, and when he hits the high note in 'What could possibly go wrong?'. Incredible- no doubt a winner.

Second Place: West End
Best Portrayal of Willy Wonka
Christian Borle
Now, it's very hard to pick the definative best for this classic role, but Christian Borle took the lead in the end, for his charming, yet whimsical and strange perfomance as Wonka. He captures the magic even if the sets fail to, and his voice is just delectable in this role.

Second Place: Gene Wilder
Best Overall Cast
Broadway
This turn of events still does not surprise me with the amount of Broadway cast members voted for best of each character; seems the cast of the adaptation are well loved! They bring so much energy and life to the stage in this one which is just captivating to watch!
Tumblr media
Second Place: 2005 & West End
Best Cast Member for 1971
Gene Wilder
It is to no surprise, been selected that Gene Wilder, the first to play Wonka in this long line, is the best cast member for this adaptation. With his charismatic nature and whimsical take on the character, he stand before the others as the best within this movie.
Tumblr media
Second Place: Julie Dawn Cole & Denise Nickerson
Best Cast Member for 2005
Johnny Depp & Jordan Fry
It seems we have a joint first place, with Johnny Depp, playing Wonka and Jordan Fry, playing Mike Teavee as the winners. Johnny Depp's strange perfomance of Wonka charmed many, so he'd no doubt be one of the best cast members in this version, as did Jordan Fry with his anger-filled Mike Teavee.

Second Place: Julia Winters
Best Cast Member for West End
Douglas Hodge
Following the pattern of incredible Wonka perfomance, brings Douglas Hodge as best cast member for the West End show. His slightly deranged and nutty version of the beloved character really shines in this adaptaion, so it's not wonder he's the best cast member for this show!

Second Place: Iris Roberts
