mostra le sembianze di una giovane donna, compatibile con i cantieri federiciani delle aree di Termoli, isernia, Ferrazzano e Foggia, e riprodurrebbe il viso della innominata Contessa del Molise, sorellastra di Costanza d'Altavilla, frutto di un rapporto tra re Ruggero II ed una sua concubina di corte.

La donna si maritò con il conte Ugo II de Moulins, già collaboratore ed imparentato con la stirpe del re normanno di Sicilia, confusa per secoli con il nome di ''Colemenza'', preso dagli storici del tempo, da quello della contessa di Catanzaro, con la quale condivise la rivalità del contendente Camponello, sopraggiunto nel momento in cui la contessa rimase vedova di Ugo II, durante le grandi rappresaglie dei nobili calabresi contro gli Altavilla.

Opera della prima metà del XIII secolo, originariamente parte di un capitello, forse della facciata di una basilica (cattedrale di Trivento), oppure di un palatium, riusato e sbozzato per uso civile nei secoli successivi, forse durante le ricostruzioni del terremoto di Santa Barbara del 1456.

L'indovinello pietracupese

Risulta davvero arduo poter trovare un qualche significato univoco, nella piccola epigrafe posta nello spigolo destro del portale trecentesco di San Gregorio Magno, chiesa ex-parrocchiale nell'agro antistante il centro abitato di Pietracupa.

" R • I • TR • I - TR • C^ • G "

Le lettere, leggibili ancor oggi, annerite dalla patina del tempo, parrebbero recitare, come si era già detto mesi fa, due acrostici con una unica affermazione, che, se contestualizzata al tipo di opera, una commissione, mostrerebbe l'uso comune di rimembrare illustri figure del potere laico ed ecclesiastico, esistite al tempo dell'esecuzione.

Di solito si tratta di pontefici, oppure di Regnanti e di Conti, ed in questo caso, potremmo già trovare una mezza soluzione.

Questo perché, essendo il cantiere stato commissionato dal feudatario Roberto di Pietracupa, al magister Riccardo, per il quale già si era ipotizzata l'appartenenza degli stemmi ai lati dell'Agnus Dei, viene da sé, volontariamente od involontariamente, il collegamento delle lettere nel suo nome, con quelle della prima frase.

Potrebbero infatti voler recitare la parola:

"R(obertus) (comit)I (pe)TR(acupensi) (fieri) (fec)I(t)".

Prendendo per buona questa via identificativa, seppure ipotetica, il collegamento alla frase successiva dovrebbe mantenere il medesimo senso, e di solito in queste epigrafi, la dedica, come già si era detta, avrebbe riguardato delle alte cariche, sotto la cui reggenza, o mandato, venne posto in essere il cantiere.

Con ciò, si potrebbe postulare la lettura della parola " T(empo)R(e) ", o "pro Tempore", seguita dalle iniziali del nome rimembrato dallo scalpellino.

Credevo di aver trovato una strada meno tortuosa, ed invece sono spuntate le radici delle sequoie, perché problematiche sono proprio quelle lettere C^ e G, divise da un punto, perciò parti di due parole, e con un trattino verso l'alto, a destra della C, che potrebbe attestare l'importanza che rivestiva questo individuo sconosciuto.

Dopo alcune chiacchierate con l'amico don Domenico Fazioli a Trivento, proprio nei riguardi del contesto diocesano, ci ha voluto rendere noto un suo parere, per cui il l'architrave potrebbe essere più antico della data trascritta dal Riccardo, oppure l'epigrafe stessa, successiva a tutto il resto, con l'idea che volesse pronunciare le iniziali di C(arolus) (re)G(ie), ipoteticamente Carlo II d'Angiò o Carlo III di Durazzo.

Naturalmente è impossibile se non insensato tutto ciò, perché l'asimmetria del frammento, le caratteristiche dell'epigrafe e il senso del testo, non lasciano dubbi sul fatto che si tratti solo e soltanto di un individuo vissuto al tempo di Roberto e Riccardo, ed in carica nel 1360.

Non è da escludere una importantissima informazione tratta, come molte altre, dal saggio storico; "Quelli della Pietra Cupa, mille anni di una comunità molisana", pubblicato dalla storiografa locale Aurora Delmonaco nel 1989, un testo essenziale, che nei confronti del signore Roberto, parla di un documento davvero molto importante.

Una bolla episcopale, dell'anno 1361, conservata nel fondo dei Caracciolo di Torchiarolo, Archivio di Stato di Napoli, e dove si elevava alla carica di abate di Sant'Alessandro in Pietracupa, il napoletano Giannotto Coppola, tutto rogato in presenza del feudatario Roberto.

Fino ad ora, il nome di questo esponente del clero locale, parrebbe essere l'unico che più si avvicina alle lettere abbreviate, però solo se questi fosse stato, per qualche svariato caso, inciso all'inverso, come C(oppola) G(iannotto), ed è una prospettiva davvero inusuale.

La possibilità è comunque da scansare in quanto, l'architrave venne ultimata nel 1360, ed il Coppola venne nominato abate solo nell'anno seguente.

Da questo punto partono solo dei vicoli ciechi, poiché nessuna signoria od alta carica di quel tempo a noi pervenuta, possiedono dette iniziali.

Tra i rappresentanti del potere secolare vi era il papa di origine francese, Innocenzo VI, mentre il vescovado di Trivento, era presieduto ancora da monsignor Pietro dell'Aquila, dell'ordine minorita.

Resta un'altra ipotesi, seppure molto forzata, che vedrebbe la dedica, non ad un personaggio singolo, ma ad una istituzione, religiosa per esempio, come un Capitolo (Capitolo Diocesano e Capitolo Abbaziale di S.Alessandro), per cui le iniziali, potrebbero completare le parole "C(apitulo) G(eneralis).

Una prospettiva insolita, che resta per altro sospesa nell'assenza di ulteriori dettagli, sul tipo di Capitolo, sulla direzione stessa di questo, di un pontificato, di un episcopato, e così via.
