#Triton just doesnt like Percy

I'm still disappointed that we never got to explore Percy's family dynamic with Amphitrite, Triton, and basically his entire sea folk side of the family. I need this.

just some headcanons i have for the pjo triton i fantasize about in my head

okay so the main thing about triton is that he takes his role as prince and heir SERIOUSLY. like you dont see any of zeus’ kids rattling on about how they’re the prince/ss of olympus right? they’re gods before they are monarchs, but triton is built different. his primary loyalty is towards serving atlantis and his father-king, poseidon, rather than personifying his mantle as the god of calm seas.

this also means that triton doesn’t really care about messing with humans like the other gods do. in fact he doesn’t really care about humans at all. he cannot fathom why poseidon has so many human affairs and why he regularly leaves atlantis to meddle in the mortal world. for triton, having rule over all the earth’s seas and oceans is a large enough domain as it is without worrying about whatever the land dwellers do. 

actually triton doesnt much care for anyone outside of the sea, other gods included. why would he? he spends all his time in the ocean. this also means that though he acknowledges zeus’ role as king of all gods, he does so grudgingly. he’s more likely to see zeus just as poseidon’s annoying younger brother rather than anything as familial as uncle or anything as reverent as the most powerful.   

because triton takes his princely role so seriously, it makes him a bit... haughty? dude’s just used to constantly being surrounded by people who have to respect him and take care of life’s meager hardships for him. he’s prideful and he doesn’t really see that as a fault

look, he’s really proud of the fact that he’s a prince, okay. he looks at the other gods like ares and hermes and apollo and he thinks, “these kids are not acting like they are children of the king god.” triton embracing his princely status is, to him, embracing the responsibility of what it means to be a child of the sea and a child of poseidon. he knows that a lot of creatures and communities depend on the sea to survive, and making sure that sea is eternally habitable for all of them means stepping the fuck up. poseidon is the king of the ocean, and the ocean harbors so much: both beauty and monstrous things, the bright colors of the surface and the dark denizens of the deep. and because poseidon is his father, triton believes that his duty as a son is acknowledging the weight of that responsibility and doing his part in keeping the peace. part of that philosophy bled into how he raised athena, and he’s the main reason why athena takes her role in giving wise counsel to zeus so seriously too: they’re both well aware of the fact that their fathers are very powerful gods and often far too carefree with their power.

so triton can come off as rather straight-laced, and blunt, and a bit of an impatient dick that’s willfully ignorant of anything outside the ocean. but all that stems from a deep sense of duty, and to the citizens of atlantis at least, triton is a fair and just ruler that they can always count on to take over when poseidon isn’t around.

and like, at least part of that duty was instilled in him because of amphitrite. poseidon may be the ruler of the seas but amphitrite actually is the sea itself, and when the waves crash and hurricanes form and the tide wanes both amphitrite and triton feel that echo in their godly bones.

he’s the only one of his siblings that is primarily worshipped in connection to their father -- as poseidon’s herald -- rather than his domain, so by nature he feels a stronger pull towards atlantis than they do. he’s also a bit of an ass to his siblings tbh. in his view, they’re all neglecting their duties in some way and he’s eternally resigned to picking up the slack.

and because i think of triton as dutiful, i also think his contempt of percy is less because he’s jealous that percy is the favorite, and more because he knows percy doesn’t truly understand what it means to be poseidon’s son. like yeah yeah he’s the son of the sea god and he exhibits great and fearsome power over the waters blah blah, but does percy know the power structure in atlantis? the daily lives of their people? does percy does his duty as the son of the king and assist in atlantean government and politics? no! and triton is sick of the way that poseidon’s demigod children never seek out to help atlantis, and the way that poseidon has never really cared about pushing his demigod children to even care about their kingdom. 

once triton warms up to percy though, he takes it upon himself to teach his younger brother everything he needs to know. and yes he thinks that percy is annoying and a brat but he also sees that percy is genuinely caring. one of his new favorite things to do is teaching percy how to fine-tune his control over the currents, which is a skill the demigod has never really needed to develop overland. it helps soothe the grief he still carries for pallas. 

i subscribe heavily to the idea that percy had to stay in atlantis for a while to cope with tartarus. and i also see poseidon instructing triton to watch over percy as he sleeps, mindful of the nightmares that he always has that had only gotten worse since his time in the pit and the way that percy can sometimes lose control of his powers during them. as the god of calm seas, triton knows a thing or two about soothing a storm. as he grows to like percy more and more, he also takes it upon himself to play a light lullaby for his brother, the music filled with a calming magic that lets percy rest without fear. 

by the end of percy’s stay, percy gets convinced to visit atlantis more regularly. and triton always shows up to take him to and from the palace every time.

When its one of those long days where and Werco are just slugging through the day waiting for the sun to finally set so.

Today were one of those slow days where Nico and Will didnt feel like talking much. Will, busy moving around, rearranging and checking things in the infirmary. Nico, back resting against a bedframe with his legs and arms glomping Percy they just sat there cuddling in one of the beds and Percy is ranting about one of his underwater adventures, skin ice cold from recently coming out of the water "then i told em no ur the weird one who tf casually unhinges their jaw..." if you'd call em that...? Doesnt rlly matter to Nico it was entertaining while he idly fiddles w Percy's hair "-and you wanna call my toes weird???"

Theyre just barely making through the slower than usual day by chanting in their heads 'just a little bit more'.

At times like these, Nico is really thankful. Their relationship has never been complicated, they simply comfort in the others company. The silence isnt awkward no need for forceful smiles or replies Nico could prolly sit there grunting a reply to them all day while they talk endlessly or simply moving about doing something or nothing at all and they wouldnt bat an eyelash, vice versa. It was that simple.

It was soothing them just doing their own thing with the comfort and presence of the other. Will is still moving about mumbling about restocking certain things and listening to Percy while also giving equal amounts of hms and grunts as answers.

You might think its abit cold, weird or even awkward for Percy but it really isnt. Its just how they work. Percy wasnt even expecting an answer just wanting talk about anything while they wait for the time to pass, infact if Percy had stayed silent just enjoying the warmth and shadows Nico offered it wouldnt be out of the ordinary either.

"...-other thing triton said i sleep like a parrotfish- i- is that a compliment or an insult??? ..."

Percys may or may not know but their small rants about their underwater adventures helps both Nico stay afloat and Will anchored instead of his head swimming with too many information and stress.

Although Nico and Percy prefers if they were in the comfort of the Hades cabin huddled in pillows, blankets and semi-darkness.

No matter how increasingly weird each story got...

Some days itll be Nico's half angry indecipherable rants while Percy lazes or even Wills ramblings/rants about his siblings or other campers etc while Nico is moving about due to restlessness or Percy doing homework for both school and extra assignments Annabeth had given him to do "nothing wrong with always being 1 step ahead seaweed brain" she always said.

As you can probably tell they do this often everywhere and anywhere.

But the infirmary bed will do for now.

big three kids headcanons

this is my 2nd time writing this since my computer is a bitch but i still want to bc these headcanons live in my head rent free 

anyways imagine if after the war the big three kids become like royalty as their parents accept them into their familys (kinda zeus is a bitch he j gives his kids more powers) and are gifted expanded powers and a higher place in the world like they’re considered prince and princes of the air/sea/dead/earth and so they get fun crowns and animals and weapons and like a avatar state type thing where their power expands tenfold and they become even more op with the whole glowing eyes thing aang gets yk and they get like crowns they can show at will and yea 

jason/thalia

- thalia doesnt get the same ranking simply because she already pulls rank as artemis’s lieutenant and so like she already has these powers 

- jason now has an eagle (the eagles name is brian bc jason doesnt understand pet names lets be real)

- he also gets a weapon from his father that is almost like the master bolt if you see it out of the corner of your eye it seems like jason is holding lightning but when you look at it head on its just a sword or a spear

- because he had so much time with lupa when he goes into his god state thing he grows fangs and claws

- i am a big fan of feral jason simply because of course he would be feral 

- jason seems to command more respect and has an aura of power at an even bigger degree

- when he goes into his god state his eyes glow bright blue like lightning and his voice kinda sounds like wind almost like he is becoming one with a storm

- he learns the langauge of the air and when he speaks it ,it sounds like the wind 

- he has greater control of wind spirits and they defer to him because he is a prince after all

- he doesnt show his crown that much but when he does its always to protect his loved ones and he wont hesitate to pull rank if he thinks it will help him 

- his crown is gold and looks like a circlet of lightning when he shows it he seems to become more princely

- again jason is feral and all romans seem to be a little bit feral because of their trials with lupa but he’s that to the extreme 

hazel and nico

- they represent their dads respective spheres of power

- nico gains an even greater control of the dead and shadow travel

- he also has hellfire black flames that seem almost cold 

- he gets a scepter to better control the dead also and his animal is a screech owl named  elmo bc he’s dumb

- his crown is made of stygian iron it seems to radiate darkness

- when he goes his god state his eyes glow silver and when he speaks it sounds like the earth shifting and his form becomes blurry as he is becoming more connect to the earth and the dead 

- both he and hazel learn the language of the dead and while hazel cant really summon the dead she can speak to them 

- hazel gains a greater control of the mist and is kinda scarily poweful

- none of them 7 are scared of her and they treat her like a little sister

- she gains a greater control of metal and can even manipulate her enemies weapons and she can manipulate earth almost like an earthbender

- she gets a serpent and names the serpent lucifer bc she’s an edgy 13 year old

- she gets a sword she can manipulate at will (even easier the other metals) and it changes shape as she fights 

- her crown is made of opal and seems to shift if you look to closely

- her god state makes her eyes glow gold (he eyes are normally brown cuz fuck u rick) and her voice sounds becomes more ethereal and sounds like rocks scraping like she is becoming the earth and the mist 

- she gains a room in plutos palace like nico

- both of them don’t hesitate to pull rank as royalty if necessary 

percy 

- as the only known child of poseidon and also his dad’s favorite so he gets even more special treatment then hazel and nico

- he learns to use a trident and is just as much a natural at that as he is with a sword it helps him form hurricanes and cause even bigger earthquakes

- he now can cause earthquakes at will 

- percy already has a bunch of pets but his dad gifts him two more a shark named taco (bc percy has a dumb sense of humor) and a bull named oreo ( he really likes food ok)

- he learns the laungauge of the sea and can easier communicate with naiads, nymphs, nereids,other royalty, and even oceanus who only speaks the langauge of the sea

- he can transform into a merman :)

- he can use siren songs much like pipers charmspeak and his voice is  ethereal and kinda scary when he sings but beautiful

- his power over water increases even more so like homie is super powerful

- he gets a room in his dads palace and even starts to get along with triton and  amphitrite

- his crown is silver and is shaped like waves it 

- while in his god state his eyes glow a deep green and his voice sounds like waves crashing onto shore

- his powers are crazy man

- he really hesitates to pull rank but will if absolutely necessary 

all the new campers are really intimidated by the big three kids in both camps but the seven and old campers literally don’t care they’ll be grumpy and instead of being intimidated one of the seven will be like go take a nap homie and its kinda funny

i’ll put a keep reading again bc, again, spoilers for people who join the fandom after the show comes out:

You are completely right, and the OP-ness of his raw power is part of what makes me find his character so fascinating

So a little background information about me: i absolutely love characters that can have their personality traits dragged in so many different directions using plot points, but still retain a few core aspects of their personality no matter what and thats what makes them in character. It’s what kept me in the BNHA universe for so long: there are so many different aus for Izuku midoriya out there, so many different ways his character can be changed by editing a few points in his story. But a core aspect could be, for example, his determination. (Or the more fanon character traits that focus on his intelligence.)

It’s not quite as clear with Percy, but with how much we know about his character growing up, there are so many things about him that we know comSo what if he went to camp earlier? What if he decided he’s a wa? (Shout out to ATLOP: trial by fire lol) What if he met Triton growing up? What if he went to Hogwarts? What if everyone in the seven died? What would happen if he were betrayed? What if his fatal flaw wasn’t loyalty? What if Annabeth died? What if Annabeth died in Tartarus? What if Kronos got to him first?

because, as i said way up at the top there, the OP-ness of his raw power is fascinating: because unlike… Nico, for example, who is weakened by drawbacks on his powers, imo Percy isn’t absolutely OP because of his own mind.

Because think of the powers Percy has: could Percy bloodbend? Its not like it isn’t possible: he overpowered the goddess of misery by using her own poison on her. But he doesn’t use this power because it scares him, and it scares Annabeth too.

And it’s his fatal flaw of loyalty that keeps him from being manipulated and joining Kronos, right? At least in part. Then again with Gaea. Can you imagine if that fatal flaw was used against the gods? With some manipulation on Kronos’s part and assurance that his mom/grover would be safe (grover if he’s already at Yancy by the time Kronos finds him)… Percy could have been absolutely terrifying. He is absolutely terrifying to monsters.

who would Percy even be without his defining character traits? Well he wouldnt be Percy at all really because, again, *defining* character traits, but still. His level of power given to a character with much looser morals? Terrifying.

i dont really know what my point is beyond: If Percy weren’t the type of person he is, he’d be so freaking terrifying.

he’d experiment with his powers more i think, because imo the reason why he doesnt has to do with the first few lines of the very first book: he never wanted to be a demigod. he wouldn’t be afraid of anything he could do… so honestly once hes older what would be stopping him from looking at the gods and going “huh, youre really not that great at ruling” and just… Going berserk. He defeated the goddess of misery… far too easily for him not to be able to do worse if he really tried.

then again, how much of his strength comes from his loyalty and love for those he sees as his own?

id like to clarify this is me going off on a tangent and i may have gone a bit ooc for how percy’d act in these situations because well…. Im me lol

I just realized… percy is weirdly powerful compared to the other kids of the big three, isnt he?

out of consideration for those who will join the fandom when the disney+ show comes out ill put a read more here, bc spoilers.

i mean consider: Thalia’s powers are along the lines of calling down lightning and… minor air control? Jason can fly, although i cant remember if he can control lightning at all for some reason. Nico’s stronger, with his control over basically anything thats undead + the shadow travel, but using his powers is a lot more dangerous for him. Hazel can control precious gems and the earth’s mineral resources in general, but most of her power comes from her learning about the mist fr/ hecate.

and then there’s percy:

He can control boats, he can do the coordinates thing while he’s at sea, he can talk to all sea animals and horses and for the most part they’ll listen to anything he tells them to do. He can even talk to zebras, right? I don’t know how closely related horses are to zebras but i think I remember seeing something once about how they definitely weren’t as close as i had thought before seeing said thing-i-saw-once. He blows up mt helens (mt st helens?) by either summoning a huge amount of water from within himself like when he cleaned out those stables in the…. 4th book? Or by creating an earthquake.

He evidently can control most if not all liquids, considering he turned a goddess’s own poison back on her in tartarus (did he even have water around at this point to give him a power boost? or did he just do that on his own?) Speaking of the power-boost he gets from water, it basically gives him fighting skills in the first book. (The rain when he defeats the minotaur, the waterbottle when he can suddenly face luke in training) He defeats a god at 12 years old… but the reason why he was able to do that is more because of his powers than anything else. He can create hurricanes, he can breathe underwater, he automatically recognizes things that come from the sea (based on how he recognizes the conch shell being blown in the first book as a conch shell). He can also heal in water… im not sure if i mentioned that.

his weaknesses seem to be mostly psychological: hes afraid of drowning, his fatal flaw is loyalty, he can be reckless. Hes limited by both distance and stamina, but this seems to be able to improve over time (unlike nico, who definitely gets stronger but is in danger of literally fading away if he uses his powers too much)

(maybe its just a child of poseidon thing? But then why isn’t tyson weirdly powerful, right? Maybe because tyson is a cyclops?)

and anyways on that note, evil percy would be absolutely terrifying, and after percy i feel like they should actually be the most scared of nico (of the big 3 kids) because despite the huge drawbacks of his powers i feel like power-wise he’s actually the closest to percy in strength.
