Tris's Nightmare

Tris slowly drifts up from sleep, reluctant to leave the comfort of the soft mattress and warm quilt… that she shouldn’t have? Dark wood paneling interspersed with silver sconces holding glowing gemstones the size of her fist. The bedframe was wrought iron, and the mattress she now knelt on, well, she could have laid down and spread her wings and not had even the tips of them go off the edge. She scooted herself up to the headboard, putting her back to it and continuing to look around the room. The bedside table, wardrobe and desk in the room continued the theme of opulence, being a shade or two lighter wood than the walls, and having gilding on them. The desk was piled with books, and she stared at them, half entranced by the leather covers and crisp looking pages. A knock sounded at the door, then it swung open. The hallway outside the door was just as brightly lit, and standing in the doorway was, “Kai?” Tris’s voice broke slightly on the name, he looked exactly as he had the last night she saw him, before the Duke took his story. She scrambled off the bed, and her feet barely touched the floor before the half-orc spoke. His cold voice and the expressionless mask that was his face stopped her in her tracks. 

“Father wants you dressed in your library best for dinner tonight. He says you may peruse the books he left in your room until then.”  

“Kairius, I-“ as Tris spoke, Kai faded away to nothing, leaving a blank wall behind him where the door had been. She hurried over to where he had been, feeling the wall and finding no way to open it or any indication that a door had ever been there. She turned slowly, a realization dawning on her. She was in the Duke’s manor. Somehow she had been transported there, and was now under his control, and she had no idea how it could have happened. She started pacing around the room, thoughts getting more and more frantic. She had to find a way out, a way back, to Mira and Sarina and Ephraim and Conall and Montbelliere. She stopped at the chair pushed under the desk, forcing her thoughts to slow down. “As long as I’m stuck here, I might as well read something. I might find something out.” She pulled the chair out, moving to one side and sat down.

At a dinner table. She froze, looking around. She had just gone to sit at the desk with the books, and now she was at a table laid with a feast. Evnyssian sat at the head of the table, beaming at her. She looked down, mortified that she would somehow be in her sleep skirt still, and saw… her festival clothes from when she lived at the library? A crisp cream colored shirtwaist with ribbon ties to hold it against her front, and an earthy brown full skirt over a generous petticoat. She looked back up, confused, and saw there were now others at the table with her and the Duke. A lady in a large sun hat and comfortable looking gown, absently reading through a book with heavy parchment pages. Kairius, eyes dead and staring at her. And, at the place of honor next to Evnyssian, an overlarge skull, resting on the table half on a plate. She looked down at her place setting, trying to find what level of ettiquette to go to, but nothing in front of her was familiar at all. The plate and cup were surrounded by utensils and oddments that seemed to serve no purpose. The Duke was talking, laughing, carrying on a full conversation with the lady next to him. She didn’t even try to hide her disdain for him, pushing the food on her plate around. Kai continued to stare at Tris, unblinking, ignoreing everything else. His gaze was feeling increasingly hostile. Tris looked down at her setting again, only to find it full of food she had never even heard described before. She hesitantly reached for one of the utensils only to have a booming voice come out of the skull on the table. 

“WRONG, TRISARA. YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER.”

She jumps, looking around, and she is suddenly sitting alone at a much smaller table, a bright light shining on her and leaving everything around her in darkness. A paper filled with her meticulously neat writing sitting in front of her, with many charcoal marks on it, crossing out things. From all around her in the darkness voices rang out.

“Trisara, you should know better. You have an entire library to find the answers.”

“Ignorant girl, mind your manners!”

“What good will learning all the rules of nobles do? You won’t ever need to use them, low born as you are.”

“Keep yer nose in yer books and outta trouble, it’s whats best fer ya. Don’t be runnin’ off.”

Echoing voices of people both past and present, getting louder and overlapping until Tris yells herself and pushes away from the table.

Pushing herself up in the bed. Delmira beside her, the mattress and blankets the same ones she remembered from Neirca. Delmira made a small inquisitive noise, still mostly asleep, and Tris gently ran her hand across the rigidatal’s shoulders as she sat up. Getting carefully out of bed, she sits on the small chair near the fireplace, staring into the coals and muttering to herself. “A dream, it was just a dream, not real, just a nightmare. Just a dream.” She leans her side against the back of the chair and watches the coals flicker, shaking her head occasionally to keep herself awake until the night outside the shuttered window starts to lighten.

A warm light

Three weeks, or so she thinks. Might be off by a day or two, but it had been three weeks. The worst days were the ones where she was woken up by Tony, with some new way to torment her. Then the couple times she had been taken to see the man claiming to be her master. There was always the times the Fae Duke had appeared, but those tended to at least help her, for the most part. And then there were days everything was quiet, no one came in to her cell, and she was left alone with her thoughts. At first it seemed like a reprieve, to not have Tony or the Duke come in. But the longer she was trapped, the longer she had to think, the more she came to resent the quiet days. Her mind always drifted into memories.

It was late summer. Her group, the Parliament, the messy lot of them, had settled in as dusk started to fall. Sarina and Conall scouting perimeters, making sure there were no obvious threats around. Ephraim and Delmira setting up tents, getting things secured and settled. Tris and Kai collecting everything needed to make a fire and cook the groups dinner. Breakfast was hit and miss for them, some people loved being up early, and could eat. Lunch was usually taken while actively travelling, unless they had come across an inn with a decent food selection. But dinner, that was almost always shared with everyone, either around the fire or around a table. There was an unspoken seating order, that they had all drifted into. Going in a circle, it would be Mira, then Tris, Kai, Conall, then Sarina and Ephraim, although those two would often switch. Fireside was always her favorite. It was more relaxed, and she could be relaxed around them, not feeling the need to hide behind her manners or a book. After eating, it would often turn into a bit of time where everyone would relax. Delmira would usually be chatting with Conall, Sarina and Ephraim about the next move, the next area she wanted to stop, or any supplies that needed to be picked up. Tris was usually sitting near her, a notebook out to jot down anything, but mostly just unwinding. And Kai would be sitting right next to Tris, usually leaning against the log she was using as a stool, and also writing, or reading, or sketching. He never liked to sit idle, and he always found a reason to scoot closer to Tris, until she laid a hand on his shoulder, or wrapped her wing around his back. As the fire burned lower, they would start drifting to their tents. The watch was normally Conall and Delmira, then Sarina and Ephraim, and the dawn watch was Tris and Kai. Every few nights, Tris would wake up in the dead of night to someone sneaking into her tent, and she would open her arms to have a shivering Kai scoot himself into her embrace, and she would hum gentle melodies until he could drift back to sleep.

A loud bang from outside the door, and she snapped back into her current reality. Chained, bruised, and lamed, she sat in her cell warily watching to see if someone would enter. It would take close to an hour of nothing happening before she could drift back into meditation deep enough to let her mind wander again.

This time, a specific moment, as opposed to a series of memories blending into one scene. In the swamp, she walks among a group of weary, battered fighters. They had prevailed against the group of undead, but it had been a hard fight. She stumbled slightly, and an arm is suddenly under hers. Looking over, she sees Montbelliere, somehow looking cleaner and more put together than anyone else, although she had seen him fighting along side the others. He smiles as her, and she can’t help but return one of her own. He keeps her hand on his arm as the continue to wend their way down the steep hill towards the town. As they get near the bottom, a human comes up to her, the healing mage, dressed in his white and purple robe. Montie’s arm pulling in close, almost trapping her hand as he looks at him suspiciously. She felt a little rush of warmth in her chest. And as the human mage asks her some question, for some help with some task, she wonders why. What was that feeling? She answers vaguely, and then realization hit her. He was protective, and she felt safe with her hand on his arm. She let that feeling glow gently in her chest, reveling in the peace it gave her.

The door slams open, and she jumps, startled out of her reverie. Not Tony, thank the gods, but one of the other guards with a cup of water and a half stale small loaf of bread. He walked in, set the ‘meal’ on the desk in the room, then walked back out again. The sense of safety and peace shattered, she got up and limped over to the desk. She ate and drank mechanically, taking the cup over and setting it near the door when she was finished, then walking awkwardly back over to the bed. Laying down, she closed her eyes, trying to get back into her memories to no avail.
