Kapoor Haveli

Kapoor Haveli is the historic home of Kapoor family, in Peshawar, Pakistan[1] a prominent Indian family with a long history in Hindi cinema. Many members of the family have been successful actors, film directors, and producers. It was constructed by Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor, father of Prithviraj Kapoor. Among the notable members of the family, Trilok Kapoor, Prithiviraj's younger brother and Raj Kapoor were born there. It is now being converted into a museum by IMGC Global Entertainment in Pakistan with the support of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

History

According to a wooden slab inside the entrance, the construction of the house was started in 1918 and completed in 1922. The Kapoors are Hindus.[3] Raj Kapoor was born in this haveli in 1924. Two of his younger siblings, who died early in 1931, were also born here. Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor were born in India, but they visited and lived at the mansion at times. After the Partition of India in 1947, members of the family, like other Hindus, left the city and the house. It was purchased in an auction in 1968 by a jeweller Haji Khushal Rasool from Charsadda town in the North West Frontier Province under the settlement clause and then sold to a resident of Peshawar.

Haji Israr Shah, the current owner of Raj Kapoor's home, said his father had purchased the house in the mid-1980s. Area residents say they used the building for events like marriage celebrations. Local resident and former mayor Abdul Hakim Safi said "The house has been empty for about 12 years as its present owners visit rarely".[7]The owners of the historic house demolished its top three storeys two decades ago due to cracks created by an earthquake in its upper portion due to its location on steep mound. The house is surrounded by commercial buildings, posing serious threat to its body.[8]Raj Kapoor's younger brother Shashi Kapoor, and sons, Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor, visited Peshawar and their old family home in 1990.[9] They also took some soil from the compound to remember their heritage.

Architecture

The multi-storey house has about 40 rooms and its front is adorned with exquisite floral motifs and 'jharokas' or overhanging balconies.[11] Many sections of the facade have begun crumbling.

Memories

The elders of Dhaki Munawar Shah still recall the days they spent with the Kapoor family. Abdul Wahid, a bedridden 75-year-old shoemaker, stated "I used to play with Raj Kapoor". He remembers when he enjoyed cold drinks with Raj Kapoor from Binori Lal’s shop situated near the mansion.[12] Mohammad Yaqoob, a 90-year-old resident of Dhakki, remembers Raj Kapoor. "He was my buddy back in the 1920s. He was a year younger than me. We used to play a game of sticks called gulli-danda. We went to the same school". The Kapoors moved to Mumbai in the 1930s, and their occasional visits to Peshawar ended completely after the partition of India in 1947, he says.[13] Some of the family friends of the Kapoor family have visited the Kapoors.

Prithviraj Kapoor's gold medal

The Kapoor family has preserved the memory of their ancestral hometown. Ranbir Kapoor has inherited the golden medal from Peshawar that was given to Krishna Raj (Raj Kapoor's wife) by her father-in-law Prithviraj Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor explained the history, "The medal was given to Prithviraj Kapoor in the 1920s. It was for a performance in Peshawar during his youth. He gave it to my mother after her wedding in the 1940s. He had put it around mother's neck and told her to keep it with her. It has since become a family heirloom. It was something grandfather had won for his talent." The senior male members of the Kapoor family still wear the traditional Peshawari Pagri on special occasions like weddings.

Family homes of movie stars

Several of the well known movie stars of the Hindi film industry have ancestral houses in the neighborhood,[16] including Dilip Kumar (see House of Dilip Kumar, Peshawar), a childhood friend of Rajkapoor,[17][18] Shah Rukh Khan[19] and Anil Kapoor.[20] Amjad Khan and Vinod Khanna were also born in Peshawar as was Madhubala's father.

Pakistan Government To Buy Ancestral Houses Of Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar

PESHAWAR: The provincial government in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa plans to buy 25 pre-partition era buildings, including the ancestral houses of legendry Bollywood actors Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, which have been declared as the national heritage, the sources said. Raj Kapoor's ancestral home, known as Kapoor Haveli, is situated in the fabled Qissa Khwani Bazar. It was built before the Partition of British India, between 1918 and 1922, by the legendary actor's grandfather Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor. Raj Kapoor and his uncle Trilok Kapoor were born in the building. It has been declared national heritage by the provincial government. Veteran actor Dilip Kumar's over 100-year-old ancestral house is also located in Peshawar's Qissa Khawani Bazaar. The house which is in shambles was declared as national heritage under the Federal Antiquities Act in 2014 by the Nawaz Sharif government. The provincial government has allocated Rs. 61 crore for buying 25 pre-partition era buildings, having archaeological importance, including the ancestral houses of actors Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, they said. The Department of Archaeology will be given a grant of Rs. 70 lakh to prepare a feasibility report of the buildings during the current fiscal, they said. After the approval of feasibility report, the process to buy these buildings will begin, they added. Remembering Prem Adib, the Ram of the Hindi Silver Screen, on his 103rd birth anniversary today.

Prem Adib was acclaimed as one of the top actors of the early 1940s, along with Pahari Sanyal, Ashok Kumar, PC Barua, Master Vinayak and others. He was a popular actor of Hindi cinema who has portrayed numerous mythological roles on screen. During a career span of 25 years, he acted in over 60 films. Adib is best remembered for his role as Lord Ram in Bharat Milap (1942). Prem Adib became popular after playing Ram in Bharat Milap (1942) and Ram Rajya (1943).

Even though many actors like Shahu Modak, Mahipal, Trilok Kapoor, Abhi Bhattacharya, Manhar Desai, Anant Kumar, Baalakraam and Chandrakant have time and again played the role of Lord Ram on the Silver Screen, no one really made the kind of impression Prem Adib did on the public. He essayed the role of Lord Ram in about 8 films. Bharat Milap (1942), Ram Rajya (1943), Ram Baan (1948), Ram Vivah (1949), Ram Navami (1956), Ram Hanuman Yudha (1957), Ram Lakshman (1957) and Ram Bhakt Vibhishan (1958).

It is well known that the only film Mahatma Gandhi saw in his lifetime was ‘Ram Rajya’. This mythological film, released in 1943 was a ‘Prakash Pictures’ production, directed by Vijay Bhatt with lyrics by Ramesh Gupta and music by Shankar Rao Vyas. The actor who played Lord Ram along with Shobhna Samarth (as Sita) in this film was Prem Adib, a name that is still afresh in the memories of Hindi Cine buffs of that era.

Prem Adib died in 1959 at the age of 42.
