Writeup: Forcing Minecraft to play on a Trident Blade 3D.
The first official companion writeup to a video I've put out!
youtube
So. Uh, yeah. Trident Blade 3D. If you've seen the video already, it's... not good. Especially in OpenGL.
Let's kick things off with a quick rundown of the specs of the card, according to AIDA64:
Trident Blade 3D - specs
Year released: 1999
Core: 3Dimage 9880, 0.25um (250nm) manufacturing node, 110MHz
Driver version: 4.12.01.2229
Interface: AGP 2x @ 1x speed (wouldn't go above 1x despite driver and BIOS support)
PCI device ID: 1023-9880 / 1023-9880 (Rev 3A)
Mem clock: 110MHz real/effective
Mem bus/type: 8MB 64-bit SDRAM, 880MB/s bandwidth
ROPs/TMUs/Vertex Shaders/Pixel Shaders/T&L hardware: 1/1/0/0/No
DirectX support: DirectX 6
OpenGL support: - 100% (native) OpenGL 1.1 compliant - 25% (native) OpenGL 1.2 compliant - 0% compliant beyond OpenGL 1.2 - Vendor string:
Vendor : Trident Renderer : Blade 3D Version : 1.1.0
And as for the rest of the system:
Windows 98 SE w/KernelEX 2019 updates installed
ECS K7VTA3 3.x
AMD Athlon XP 1900+ @ 1466MHz
512MB DDR PC3200 (single stick of OCZ OCZ400512P3) 3.0-4-4-8 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS)
Hitachi Travelstar DK23AA-51 4200RPM 5GB HDD
IDK what that CPU cooler is but it does the job pretty well
And now, with specs done and out of the way, my notes!
As mentioned earlier, the Trident Blade 3D is mind-numbingly slow when it comes to OpenGL. As in, to the point where at least natively during actual gameplay (Minecraft, because I can), it is absolutely beaten to a pulp using AltOGL, an OpenGL-to-Direct3D6 "wrapper" that translates OpenGL API calls to DirectX ones.
Normally, it can be expected that performance using the wrapper is about equal to native OpenGL, give or take some fps depending on driver optimization, but this card?
The Blade 3D may as well be better off like the S3 ViRGE by having no OpenGL ICD shipped in any driver release, period.
For the purposes of this writeup, I will stick to a very specific version of Minecraft: in-20091223-1459, the very first version of what would soon become Minecraft's "Indev" phase, though this version notably lacks any survival features and aside from the MD3 models present, is indistinguishable from previous versions of Classic. All settings are at their absolute minimum, and the window size is left at default, with a desktop resolution of 1024x768 and 16-bit color depth.
(Also the 1.5-era launcher I use is incapable of launching anything older than this version anyway)
Though known to be unstable (as seen in the full video), gameplay in Minecraft Classic using AltOGL reaches a steady 15 fps, nearly triple that of the native OpenGL ICD that ships with Trident's drivers the card. AltOGL also is known to often have issues with fog rendering on older cards, and the Blade 3D is no exception... though, I believe it may be far more preferable to have no working fog than... well, whatever the heck the Blade 3D is trying to do with its native ICD.
See for yourself: (don't mind the weirdness at the very beginning. OBS had a couple of hiccups)
youtube
youtube
Later versions of Minecraft were also tested, where I found that the Trident Blade 3D follows the same, as I call them, "version boundaries" as the SiS 315(E) and the ATi Rage 128, both of which being cards that easily run circles around the Blade 3D.
Version ranges mentioned are inclusive of their endpoints.
Infdev 1.136 (inf-20100627) through Beta b1.5_01 exhibit world-load crashes on both the SiS 315(E) and Trident Blade 3D.
Alpha a1.0.4 through Beta b1.3_01/PC-Gamer demo crash on the title screen due to the animated "falling blocks"-style Minecraft logo on both the ATi Rage 128 and Trident Blade 3D.
All the bugginess of two much better cards, and none of the performance that came with those bugs.
Interestingly, versions even up to and including Minecraft release 1.5.2 are able to launch to the main menu, though by then the already-terrible lag present in all prior versions of the game when run on the Blade 3D make it practically impossible to even press the necessary buttons to load into a world in the first place. Though this card is running in AGP 1x mode, I sincerely doubt that running it at its supposedly-supported 2x mode would bring much if any meaningful performance increase.
Lastly, ClassiCube. ClassiCube is a completely open-source reimplementation of Minecraft Classic in C, which allows it to bypass the overhead normally associated with Java's VM platform. However, this does not grant it any escape from the black hole of performance that is the Trident Blade 3D's OpenGL ICD. Not only this, but oddly, the red and blue color channels appear to be switched by the Blade 3D, resulting in a very strange looking game that chugs along at single-digits. As for the game's DirectX-compatible version, the requirement of DirectX 9 support locks out any chance for the Blade 3D to run ClassiCube with any semblance of performance. Also AltOGL is known to crash ClassiCube so hard that a power cycle is required.
Interestingly, a solid half of the accelerated pixel formats supported by the Blade 3D, according to the utility GLInfo, are "render to bitmap" modes, which I'm told is a "render to texture" feature that normally isn't seen on cards as old as the Blade 3D. Or in fact, at least in my experience, any cards outside of the Blade 3D. I've searched through my saved GLInfo reports across many different cards, only to find each one supporting the usual "render to window" pixel format.
And with that, for now, this is the end of the very first post-video writeup on this blog. Thank you for reading if you've made it this far.
I leave you with this delightfully-crunchy clip of the card's native OpenGL ICD running in 256-color mode, which fixes the rendering problems but... uh, yeah. It's a supported accelerated pixel format, but "accelerated" is a stretch like none other. 32-bit color is supported as well, but it performs about identically to the 8-bit color mode--that is, even worse than 16-bit color performs.
At least it fixes the rendering issues I guess.

My concept art will be targeted at Art Directors and other Game and film concept Artists to be the inspiration for game designs. These processes will be presented in my Blog
My intention for the project dissemination is to connect with other concept artists in my desired career path for feedback on my work once it's complete. Additionally, I will create a tailored online portfolio pack to send to potential companies (employers). However, I won't focus on this aspect during the project, as my priority is to meet the deadline. I intend to use platforms like ArtStation to reach out to artists and companies.
My concept art created as part of my project will be shared on Thumblr,Artsation and my blog to allow my audience and wider group of people to view and interact with my concepts.
Blog assignment and Publicity platform in Tumblr:https://huanyukang.tumblr.com/
Only publicity platform in Artsation:
My project will be a solo project with no contributions from others.
My career goal is to work within the film or game industry as a freelance concept artist in China. This project will help me begin my journey. The outcome I want to achieve at the end of this assignment is a fully polished project that I can display on my ArtStation portfolio. My passion has always been creative and imaginative, and concept art fuels that fire. This is the reason why I chose this MA course to begin my dream journey and produce a professional concept art project

I have finally decided to get all the thoughts and ideas down for the Dream SMP Soul Eater au I have. Most of these ideas are from a convo I had with @bargledblocks back in January, but some ideas I have come up with myself since then. Also, because I said I would, @myketheartista, here is that au I mentioned during one of Shep’s streams...
Also, I am open to not only talking about other ideas involving the Dream SMP members here, but also Hermitcraft, Yogscast, and Team Crafted members, if anyone wants
Pretty much canon divergent from the original Soul Eater plot. Treaty with Witches where the only Witch souls allowed to be taken are those who are actively harming people, peaceful Witches can live and do work anywhere, including DWMA. Also, fuck canon, Witches can be any gender. Kishins are pretty much the same as in the series. Minecraft non-boss hostile mobs exist as monsters summoned by Kishins and evil Witches. DWMA as a school has up to traditionally college aged students/classes, and has a few elementary age students/classes, mostly Weapons learning control.
-Death Family-
Philza: The God of Death. Physically in his early 30s while in human form, thousands of years old in reality. Only uses his God form when acting as Lord Death, otherwise prefers his human form. Principle of DWMA. 5'11 in human form and 10' in God form.
Kristen: An immortal crow Witch. Married to Philza. No one quite knows how Kristen gained her immortality. Often encourages pranks. Vice principle of DWMA.
Dream: Phil's first biological son. The first Kishin with a literal cult following. Physically in his early twenties, is actually about a thousand years old. Barely escaped being sealed with major injuries, went into hiding for a long while. Can shift minor parts of his appearance as well as his physical age. Resurfaces several years before the story pretending to be an orphan, adopted by Puffy. Posing as a meister.
Ranboo: Phil’s second biological son. 15-16. Hair is half black and half white due to being a Grim Reaper. Is also heterochromatic, with his right eye being green and his left eye being red. Has memory problems and blacking out episodes from an unknown source Dream. Used to occasionally wield Techno and Wilbur, until circumstances involving Dream caused Tommy to no longer be able to resonate with Tubbo, which causes Ranboo to become Tubbo’s meister later on. 6'6.
Technoblade: Adopted by Phil as a toddler alongside his twin, Wilbur. Older by two minutes. An axe weapon, but usually prefers to wield Wilbur. Sometimes lets Ranboo act as a meister to him and Wilbur. Early twenties. Naturally pink really long hair in a braid. Needs glasses to read. Sleeps a lot. History and English nerd. A very skilled meister.
Wilbur: Adopted by Phil as a toddler alongside his twin, Technoblade. Younger by two minutes. An axe weapon, usually wielded by Techno. Can temporarily match wavelengths with anyone. Early twenties. Knows how to braid hair. Natural pink hair, dyes it brown. Wears glasses because his vision is shit. Theater kid to the extreme. Grigori soul
Tommy: Adopted by Phil as an infant after being found in the ruins of a town attacked by a Witch. A chakram weapon. 15-16. Formally wielded by Tubbo until the incident involving Dream, is now partnered with Purpled. Very loud. Limited knowledge in how to self wield.
-Meisters-
Punz: Early twenties. Purpled's older sibling (he/they). Can temporarily match Soul Wavelengths with anyone, can't use Soul Resonance. Infected by Black Blood.
Purpled: 15-16. Punz's younger brother. Became Tommy's meister when Tommy was rescued from Dream. Stays in the dorms, even though Punz has an apartment.
Sam: Late 30s. Ponk's meister and husband. George's adoptive father. Combat teacher at DWMA, also head of the school's security. 7'4 for some reason. Almost got infected with Black Blood through Ponk, but managed to not get affected.
Bad: Late 30s, assumingly. Skeppy's meister and husband. Sapnap's adoptive father. History teacher at DWMA, also part of the school's security. 9'6 because he isn't human. Infected with Black Blood.
Niki Nihachu: 17-18. Jack's meister. Sweet but deadly. Stays in an apartment with Jack. Dyed pink hair.
Karl Jacobs: Looks to be early twenties. Sapnap’s meister as well as boyfriend, along with Quackity. Sort of just, showed up one day, with no memories other than his name. Has multicolored purple and green eyes. Stays in an apartment with Sapnap and Quackity. Very good at writing stories, although they are unsettlingly close to actual historical events.
-Weapons-
Ponk: Late 30s. Giant garden shears weapon. Sam's partner and husband. George's other adoptive father. Second combat teacher at DWMA. Infected with Black Blood.
Skeppy: Late 30s. Scimitar weapon with a blue blade. Bad's partner and husband. Sapnap's other adoptive father. Natural bright blue hair. Infected with Black Blood through Bad.
Jack Manifold: 17-18. Rocket launcher weapon. Niki's partner. Right eye is blue and left eye is red. Wears 3D glasses. Stays in an apartment with Niki.
Schlatt: Late 30s. A bladed shepherd's crook weapon. North American Death Scythe, Phil’s personal weapon since 12 years before the story. For some reason, has ram horns. Secretly working with the Cult of Dream. Adopted Tubbo at the insistence of Phil, cares for Tubbo distantly, but not enough to not betray everyone later on.
Jordan Sparklez: Deceased. A trident weapon. Formerly the North American Death Scythe and Phil’s personal weapon. Tubbo’s biological father. Was considered too much of a threat to be alive, so was lured out on a solo mission and then vanished.
George: Early twenties. A greatsword weapon. Dream’s partner. Adoptive son of Sam and Ponk. Colorblind. Stays behind at first when Dream’s secret is discovered and he is forced to leave, but eventually leaves to join him.
Sapnap: Early twenties. Flamethrower weapon. Karl’s partner and boyfriend, along with Quackity. Adoptive son of Bad and Skeppy. Prone to arson. Stays in an apartment with Karl and Quackity. Used to be close friends with Dream, feels betrayed when Dream leaves. Likes pandas.
Tubbo: Adopted by Schlatt after the disappearance of his father when he was three. Half trident weapon. 15-16, is a few months older than the rest of the minors. Used to be Tommy's meister until the incident involving Dream, is now partnered with Ranboo. Natural brunet but dyes his hair blonde. Shortest of the minors. Feral. Grigori soul.
-Witches-
Puffy: Late 30s. Sheep witch. Adoptive mother to Dream, Foolish, and Michelle. Has rainbow colored hair, ram horns, and light green goat eyes. Works as a counselor/therapist in Death City.
Fundy: Late teens. Fox witch. Has fox ears and tail. Mostly just pulls pranks on students of DWMA and other Death City residents. For some reason, calls Phil ‘grandpa’ and somehow got Wilbur to act like his father. Used to have a crush on Dream.
Quackity: Early twenties. Duck witch. Has duck wings. Karl and Sapnap’s other boyfriend, lives in a Death City apartment with them. Has a scar on his face that goes over his left eye, rendering him blind in that eye. Tends to join Fundy in pulling pranks.
Antfrost: Early twenties?. Cat witch. Has cat ears and tail, as well as able to transform into a cat. Stays with Bad and Skeppy. Part of DWMA’s security team. Gets infected with Black Blood.
-Other-
Foolish: Seemingly early twenties. No one actually knows what he is, but he is a true god of life. Can manipulate his age and appearance aside from his bright emerald eyes and sharp teeth. Wanted to experience life like a mortal.

Graphics cards
Desktop computers
Laptop computers
Custom build computers
When going through the suggestions in this post, remember that a powerful graphics card is crucial to achieving a good experience with Lumion. CPU, memory and other specs also play a role, but a good experience begins with the graphics card.
The following suggestions are not influenced by any hardware manufacturers. Lumion has zero partnerships with hardware manufacturers and brands.
Our goal is to showcase hardware, without outside influence, that we know will give you an amazing experience when rendering with Lumion. It’s still essential to review every desktop computer or laptop before purchasing, and further down in this post, you’ll find detailed information about how to make the best decision.
Graphics cards
In this section, we’ve made suggestions for Nvidia graphics cards. The Radeon AMD cards will work just as well, but the Lumion team simply has more experience with Nvidia cards, and that’s why we’ve included them here. If your allegiance is with AMD, then of course feel free to choose comparable cards.
Example of a graphics card. Sure, it looks like a brick, but this is the hardware with the most impact on Lumion performance.
If you are unsure of what graphics card you need, you can find more information in the Graphics Card Buyer’s Guide further down in this post.

Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti (Avoid the GTX 1050 non-Ti version)
Desktop computers
What makes a good desktop computer for running Lumion?
You can get a more detailed answer in the “Custom build computer” section of this guide, but it essentially boils down to a fast GPU. You need a great GPU for fast 3D rendering and performance in Lumion, and when shopping, always pay attention to this specification.
A good desktop computer for Lumion also has enough CPU to back up the graphics card, suitable system memory, the correct power supply and a 64-bit Windows 10 operating system.
Example of a Lumion-ready desktop computer - the Origin Millenium.
When shopping for a Lumion-ready desktop or laptop computer, there are few important details you should know:
There are different models, configurations and tech kits available for many desktop and laptop computers. Many desktops, for example, are customizable and let you choose the technology you want inside of it.
Screen resolution has a big impact on performance. A 3840x2160 screen, for instance, is very demanding on a graphics card, even with a GTX 1080. If it’s an option, consider a 1920x1080 screen.
Here are a few great performing desktop computers at varying price points. These are only a sample of different workstations, and there are other, equally powerful desktop computers that can be evaluated.

Getting a custom build computer?
Building a computer from scratch, or getting someone else to build your perfect architectural design and rendering computer? There are several ways to ease the process of building a Lumion-ready computer.
youtube
In this video, Lumion expert Mike Brightman shows you how to remove your old graphics card to make way for your new high-end GPU card.
First, it’s a good idea to read the rest of this post to uncover some specific details for optimizing Lumion performance. Secondly, if you’re heading to your local computer shop to ask the crew there, you can simply provide the following details:
I have an open budget and want the best Lumion-ready workstation money can buy

CPU: i7-8700K
System memory: 64 GB (3000 MHz or higher)
Power supply: Minimum 750W (80+ titanium-rated)
OS: 64-bit Windows 10 with all updates installed
I have an average budget and I’m looking to optimize the performance/price ratio
Graphics card: GTX 1070 Ti
CPU: i7-8700
System memory: 32 GB (2666 MHz or higher)
Power supply: Minimum 650W (80+ gold-rated)
OS: 64-bit Windows 10 with all updates installed
My budget is tight but I need a reliable workstation for complex scenes (large park or part of a city)
Graphics card: GTX 1060 (with 6 GB onboard memory)
CPU: i5-8600K
System memory: 16 GB (2133 MHz or higher)
Power supply: Minimum 550W (80+ gold-rated)
OS: 64-bit Windows 10 with all updates installed
My budget is tight and I render moderately complex scenes (moderately detailed buildings and interiors)

Can your current computer or laptop run Lumion?
When you want to know if your current computer is fast enough to run Lumion, the first step is to check its specifications.
There are essentially four computer specs that you need to know to ensure optimal Lumion performance on your computer, including:
Graphics card (GPU)
Central processing unit (CPU)
System memory (RAM)
Graphics card memory (VRAM)
If you already have Lumion, you can find these details by running a benchmark on the Lumion home screen. The benchmark will tell you if the performance is too low, good enough or ideal.
To run the benchmark, simply follow the steps in this video:
If you don’t have Lumion, finding your computer specs is still extremely easy, but how you find them may vary based on your current Windows operating system. The method outlined in this guide uses the DirectX diagnostic tool (DxDiag) on Windows 10.
Locate the Run Command
Type in DxDiag
Open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Write down the Operating System, Processor and Memory
At the top of the screen, click on “Display” or, in some cases, “Render” to view your graphics card details
Write down the graphics card name and the VRAM (often written as “total approximate memory”)
By having this data, even if you don’t fully understand what it means, you’ll already have a huge headstart in upgrading the graphics card or other components and getting the best performance possible out of Lumion.
How to get the best performance out of Lumion?
Below are the basic computer requirements for achieving fast, non-laggy and stable performance in Lumion:
A powerful and fast graphics card with an 8,000+ PassMark Score (more on this below) and 6 GB memory or more. The graphics card should be compatible with DirectX 11 or later.
CPU with more than 4.0 GHz. You can run Lumion with a CPU that clocks at 3.0 GHz or higher, but if you have a fast graphics card, a low CPU will essentially block those extra benefits you would have received.
16 GB of system memory (RAM). If you are only doing simple scenes, however, you can get by with 8GB of memory, but once again, this is not ideal for large, complex scenes.
64-bit Windows 10 operating system
A Gold- or Titanium-rated 80+ power supply
40 GB of free storage space on your hard drive (Lumion needs about 20 GB of free storage space)
Keep in mind that these are the recommended specifications. Lumion will still run with the minimum specifications, which you can find on the website.
Graphics Card Buyer’s Guide
Because Lumion runs on advanced 3D graphics technology to create high-resolution, interactive 3D environments, the performance of your graphics card will affect the speed of the real-time visualization as well as render speeds.
The following real-time visualization, for instance, showcases this level of quality powered by the graphics card:
Real-time visualization
Final render
There are hundreds of graphics cards available on the market, but when choosing the right graphics card that balances price and performance, there is one detail that can help ease the browsing process: the PassMark point.
PassMark points are used to rate the performance of a graphics card. The higher the PassMark, the higher the performance of the card. For instance, the following graphics card PassMark chart is an easy-to-follow guide for categorizing graphics cards:
View the full list of graphics cards and their PassMark scores.
In the following section, we’ll show you a concrete example of how the graphics card, as well as the other system specifications, can influence render speeds.
How fast is ‘fast’ rendering?
Between the GPU, CPU, and RAM, the GPU carries a significant amount of influence when it comes to rendering speeds.
However, if a GTX 1080 graphics card is rendering a scene in 20 seconds, it doesn’t mean you’ll experience the exact same results. Things that may affect render speeds could include everything from the apps you have running in the background to the size and complexity of the scene you have in Lumion.
To give you an idea of the variation in render speeds using different computer hardware, we ran a few render races on the following three scenes using computers around the office.

Glitches
Yoda’s Lightsaber Walking Stick Glitch
NOTE: THIS GLITCH REQUIRES DUAL WIELD; CHEAT CODE = C4ES4RFirstly, go into Extras and make sure Dual Wield is turned OFF. Now change into Yoda and make sure your light-sabers are away. Next, simply turn Dual Wield ON and half of Yoda’s walking stick will be a light-saber handle. This is a really cool glitch and I use it every time I play this game.
General Grievous Or Asajj Ventress Lightsaber Glitch
NOTE: THIS GLITCH ONLY WORKS WITH GENERAL GRIEVOUS AND ASAJJ VENTRESS. Firstly, change into General Grievous or Asajj Ventress and make sure your lightsabers are away. Next, go into an elevator and just as the screen goes black, hit Z to get your lightsabers out. If timed correctly, and depending on which character you’re being, General Grievous should only have one green lightsaber out and Asajj Ventress should only have one red lightsaber out. This may take some practise to get the right timing, but it is a really cool glitch and I use it every time I play this game.
Rapid Fire Glitch
You’re going to need 2 players for this glitch. First get player one (or 2) choose a custom character that doesn’t have a machine gun, but he has to have a gun , choose him then have player 2 go to the custom character place on the good ship, go to the character that player 1 is, then have player 2 switch player 1s gun to machine gun, go back & if you hold the attack button player 1s gun will start firing real fast! Its really helpful for getting rid of retards that attack you. (Note: I’ve only done this on Wii).
Yoda Floor Slam Glitch!
NOTE: THIS GLITCH REQUIRES DUAL WIELD, YODA AND TIMING SKILLS! Firstly change into Yoda and go next to any elevator. Next, turn on dual wield. Then go into elevator ( With Light sabers off ) and as soon as the lights go black, press the Z Button. If done correctly, Yoda’s Light saber blade should not be attached to his Light saber hilt ( You shouldn’t see the blade at all ) until you move. Once you are out of the elevator Yoda should have only one light saber. Then, Dubble-jump and press the B button or swing the remote ( While in the air ) and Yoda will do a Floor slam.
