Two former Colombian soldiers, Alexander Ante and José Aron Medina Aranda, were detained in Venezuela during a stopover while returning from fighting in Ukraine. Following their arrest in Caracas, both were extradited to Russia, where they now face charges of having fought against Russian forces as mercenaries. A Moscow court has ordered their provisional detention, which could lead to a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. The family, who had been waiting for their return in Colombia, were devastated to discover that they had been sent to Russia without warning.

A layer of dirt and grime covered every surface of the Red Rocket Gas Station. Outside the sun blazed down, covering the Wasteland in a blazing heat. The wind gave an occasional whistle as it blew more dirt into the gas station’s broken windows. Though you were paying attention to none of that, you were focused on the sound that should not be there.
The thumping of heavy footsteps on broken concrete.
So with your back against the checkout counter you reload your gun and cussed Ma June. If this ‘simple favor’ didn’t kill you, you were going to ring the older lady’s neck.
As the heavy steps get closer your finger tightens around the trigger of your gun. The old bell chimes above the door and heavy footfalls turn into light steps as the newest customer to the Red Rocket navigates around the debris littering the floor. The footsteps grow quieter as the person heads towards the other end of the gas station.
Taking the opportunity, you slowly crawl towards the open door a few feet to your right. The manager’s office was threadbare, a simple desk and chair sat in the middle of the room with a few filing cabinets sitting behind the desk. It did not offer many hiding places, however you had no interest in hiding. You were interested in getting the piece of tech Ma June was searching for and getting the hell out of the Red Rocket.
After waiting a moment, with bated breath for the sound of footsteps to draw closer. You were surprised when they never did, coming to the conclusion that the person must have left. Likely abandoning their search when they came up empty handed. Not that you minded, The less people here, the less bullets you would have to use to make it back to Filly.
Pushing the other person from your mind, you began going through the drawers of the desk. Where you found a handful of plastic forks, a loose cigarette and four caps. With another glance to the open door and a pause to listen for steps, you turned your attention to the filing cabinets behind you.
The first cabinet was a bust, holding nothing but trash. You had moved onto the second cabinet, only starting to pull the first drawer out when the hairs on the back of your neck rose and a pit of dread opened in your stomach. Before you could turn to inspect, the hammer of a pistol was pulled back. The click echoed off the walls of the dusty gas station.
“My, my,” A low voice drawled out behind you. “What’s a pretty little thing like you doin’ all alone out here?”
The voice was low, gravely, distinctly a man’s voice. It trickled down your spine like ice water, setting off every nerve ending within you. But deep down, there was a familiarity in the voice. A familiarity that had your heart tightening in your chest.
“Just surviving,” you replied., hand tightening around your own pistol. “Wasteland’s a rough place.”
You tried to keep your voice level, not wanting to give away any of your intentions or give the stranger a reason to pull his trigger. At this point you were ready to call this mission a bust, sure that the tech Ma June was after was not worth your life.
“Stand up, leave your gun on the ground” the man demanded, leaving no room for arguments.
Complying with the man, you left your gun in the dirt and stood. Muscles aching and protesting from being squatted for so long. Once fully stood you began to turn around. Wanting to see the man who was likely going to shoot you down.
The man, no, the ghoul in front of you was menacing from looks alone. A long, leather trench coat covered the rest of his outfit, an ammo belt stretched across his chest, and a weathered cowboy hat was pulled low on his head. A sneer stretched his lips across yellowing teeth and fire burned in deep brown eyes.
As you locked eyes with the Ghoul a weight of emotions crashed into your chest. If silence hadn’t consumed the gas station you would have thought he shot you.
“Cooper?” The name fell from your lips before you could stop it.
The sound bubbled in the space between the two of you. Growing with the tension in the room before popping with a deep growl from the man.
Quicker than you could realize, he was on you. A heavy arm pushing against your throat as he slammed you against the hard metal cabinets behind you. A handle dug harshly into your hip, surly going to leave a bruise. However, you could not find it in you to care. Not when Cooper Howard was standing before you two hundred years after you had seen him last. Two hundred years after you were sure he had died.
“How do you fuckin; know that name?” He growled, pushing his forearm harder against your throat.
“Coop, please,” You coughed out, struggling to breath past the pressure Cooper was putting on your neck. “It’s me.”
His eyes darkened, a predator staring down at you. “Bullshit.”
The arm not holding you to the cabinets began to raise, The metal of his gun was cold as he placed it to your temple.
“I’m only gonna ask one more time.” He pulled the hammer back with a sickening click. “How do you know that name and why are you wearing her fuckin’ face?”
He was nearly shouting at the end of his question. Fury beginning to take over his composure.
Knowing you only had one more chance to prove to Cooper that you were standing in front of him, you dug into your memories with Cooper. Going back to a place you had long wished to go back to.
“I told you I loved you for the first time the day the bombs dropped,” you choked around the words, “I had a meeting at the studio and you were getting ready for a birthday party. We were standing in the driveway and you were wearing that damn cowboy getup, but I couldn’t wait anymore so I blurted it out.”
The fire in his eyes diminished as another emotion took over. With a small sigh, your name escaped his lips in a whisper. Like a prayer he had long since forgotten.

Is there a more or less direct translation of the English verb "to suck" as in "this thing is bad and I don't like it"? I've seen apestar being used this way, but I'm not sure. If there isn't a single verb you can use in most cases, how can you phrase it without having to say no me gusta every time. Sometimes, when I tried to make a sentence, a simple no me gusta sounded weird.
A few examples for phrases that I struggle to translate:
I'm sorry, I can't translate this, my Spanish sucks.
This pen sucks, better use the other one.
Urgh, it sucks so much that my train is always delayed.
"No me guste que el tren siempre tenga una demora" doesn't really hit the same way.
apestar is the default way they tell you to do it
The other default ways are ser malĂsimo/a or as an adverb (or adverb) fatal like escribe fatal "he/she is awful at writing" or lo hablo fatal "I'm terrible at speaking (it)"
You can also say no servir like no sirve para nada "it's useless" or "it doesn't work at all" [or said of people it's "good for nothing" basically]
Sometimes people will use qué fastidio for "that sucks" instead of apesta though it's more like "what a pain" or "that's so annoying"
...
I'm not sure what the more colloquial words are for it. Followers?

State of Terror: Life After Venezuela’s Electoral Uprising
In a voice message to the ruling party leadership, Maduro summoned PSUV militants and his remaining supporters to defend his rule: “Coordinate with National Police (PNB) and Guard (GNB) to restore order,” he commanded. “We have to grab this by the head. Act immediately. Every little fire that starts must be extinguished.”
On the morning of July 29th, while the Comando por Venezuela celebrated a de facto triumph of more than 30 points over Maduro—after processing 73% of the voting tallies—demonstrators returned home under the watchful eyes and cannons of colectivos and security forces.
On July 28, Venezuela’s government—perhaps dazzled by its own misreading of the situation—became exposed to electoral reality. The barrio, emerging as a new agent of change, slapped chavismo in the face, forcing it to embrace the only version of sovereignty Maduro understands: the power to dictate who lives, who dies, and who goes to jail, echoing the words of Cameroonian social theorist Achille Mbembe.
In a context where hundreds of thousands of people volunteered to defeat Maduro at the polls and then protect the evidence of their collective will, the brute force unleashed since July 29 seeks to destroy the spirit and hunger for change that Machado’s campaign activated.
As Chávez statues were toppled and Maduro posters torn down, the government, from its trenches in Miraflores and Fuerte Tiuna, tried to convince international mediators that Amoroso’s announced result wasn’t up for discussion. At the same time, it turned on all engines of its war machine, including an overblown rhetoric that doesn’t even pretend to be logical. Maduro, Diosdado Cabello, and Jorge Rodríguez have labeled those who oppose them—from local politicians to foreign governments, even on the left—as Nazis or fascists, describing demonstrators as drugged criminals from the U.S. and cells from the international criminal organization Tren de Aragua.
A week after the election, human rights NGO Foro Penal confirmed 1,102 arrests, with 170 of them in Caracas. Monitor de VĂctimas reported 23 murders so far, with colectivos responsible for at least 9, operating in total sync with State security officers.
Like paramilitary forces fighting a hybrid war, colectivos work as PSUV’s fist in the areas where the chavista State holds more economic and social power over a population now turning its back on them. Their priority is to defend their government sponsors at gunpoint.
The offensive reached the doors of those who took to the streets the Monday after the presidential election. A video from that day shows a man on a bike recording himself while chasing demonstrators, saying to the camera: “Here we are, prepared to defend peace and our principles. We want peace, but we are prepared for war. In Venezuela, it was our president Nicolás Maduro who won. Guarimberos (a slur for protesters) ran to hide in their homes. From now on, we take over the streets that have always belonged to us, not to oligarchs!”
Communal councils and what’s left of the Hugo Chávez Battle Units—PSUV grassroots structures forming a sort of parallel chavista State—have been ordered to identify, locate, and point out anyone who called out the election fraud in different communities.
Under this war logic, anyone who poses a threat to those in power becomes a target for colectivos and security forces: demonstrators hiding in safe houses, people who showed their voting tallies or denounced the fraud on social media, and community leaders and members of comanditos who promoted participation and defended votes for Edmundo GonzĂĄlez.
On Tuesday the 30th, in the densely populated (and formerly very chavista) 23 de Enero area, PNB detained four boys—three of them teenagers—who were banging pots on the eighth floor of a building. Caracas Chronicles obtained voice notes sent by leaders in communal councils in Distrito Capital. In one of them, a woman hoped that someone would “shoot escuálidos (classic chavista hate speech for opposition folk)” to get them in line “while Maduro decides to call the army. At least I saw colectivos giving them hell. If they catch anyone, they will make a pulp out of him
and they are hiding between our buildings.”
A WhatsApp chain message shared with neighbors in San JosĂ©, in downtown Caracas, read: “We call on mothers, families: advise your kids and don’t help the Right. After all this, the opposition leaders wash their hands and continue their trips and lavish lifestyles while our young people fall under the weight of law and order. We can’t cry after that happens. Women, defend your households and protect them from destabilizing plans.”
Caracas Chronicles reached out to one activist who organized volunteers in Western Caracas on July 28, who has since gone into hiding along with about eleven colleagues. Colectivos started hunting for her the minute after the opposition rejected Amoroso’s results. From her hiding place, the woman sent videos showing how CICPC and DAET patrols have assisted colectivos in taking over the barrios.
DAET, which replaced the infamous FAES death squads, highlights the scope of Maduro’s policy against the poor, which has progressively mutilated human rights and living conditions for those with the least. Meanwhile, the regime sustains an oppressive minority of party militants, colectivos, CLAP clerks, police officers, and intelligence personnel with privileged access to institutional networks and State resources.
According to psychologist AndrĂ©s Antillano, these inequalities within low-income groups generate fear, distrust, and resentment in the barrio—where chavista groups impose the status quo by marking enemies and controlling those who criticize the government.
A noticeable pattern in this repressive wave has been the indiscriminate attacks on teens and young people who have known no other president than Maduro.
Last week, late at night, the DGCIM posted a reel on their Instagram account announcing their new “campaign” and security operation, “Operación Tun Tun,” with the hashtag #sinllorader (#nowhining). In the background, a song played: “Children take care! Please be aware. All that you’ve done will come to bear!”
“Operación Tun Tun,” which translates to Operation Knock-Knock, isn’t new. Diosdado Cabello first announced it on his TV show “El Mazo Dando” in 2017, during three months of Venezuelan protests, to target people he considered “terrorists.” This time, the DGCIM, along with other police forces like the CICPC, led by Douglas Rico, not only released this video with its intimidating song but also shared images with WhatsApp and Signal phone numbers, urging people to report anyone allegedly involved in a “physical or virtual hate campaign through social media.”
This operation targets everyone who worked on election day as witnesses or as part of a “comandito” (the opposition grassroots group involved in collecting voting records), those who protested, and even people posting on social media in support of González Urrutia, Machado, or anyone expressing disagreement with chavismo.
On Saturday night, Cabello showcased various Venezuelans detained under “Operación Tun Tun” across the country on his TV show, using the hashtag #PeaceHasArrived.
Other security forces, like the Táchira Police, published “wanted” notices with pictures of young men, labeling them “leader guarimberos.” Even before the elections, Nicolás Maduro had warned that there would be a “bloodbath and fratricidal civil war caused by the fascists” if he didn’t win on July 28.
In addition to raiding homes, various security forces, including DAET, PNB, GNB, and local police, have set up checkpoints in different Venezuelan cities to seize and inspect mobile phones.
The surveillance, targeting, and persecution of citizens extend to other social media platforms like Telegram. Public figures and activists have reported the existence of various Telegram channels created to post pictures of people involved in election day activities or peaceful demonstrations. Some of these channels, like “Caza Guarimbas” or “Controla las Guarimbas,” were shut down by the platform after being reported for promoting violence.
In these channels, users could see messages like “Edmundo is a killer” or pictures of young individuals accused of being responsible for hate crimes (as defined in Maduro’s Hate Law).
This manhunt has created a new environment in the country. People are deleting WhatsApp chats, activating disappearing messages, and sending important information to relatives abroad so they can spread the word about what’s happening inside the country. Some have had to leave their homes and find places to hide.
The situation has also changed how people gather in the streets. For example, during María Corina Machado’s demonstration last Saturday, journalists refrained from recording participants’ faces. Even Machado, who had recently expressed fear for her life in The Wall Street Journal, appeared in public covered with a hood before climbing onto a bus.
Understanding that loneliness and despair are fertile ground for totalitarianism, Maduro and his elite are trying to break the connections people have built, isolating citizens once again from the democratic cause—even more so those who directly promoted and defended the vote in the presidential election.
How can we fight this? If terror seeks to deny what happened at polling stations on July 28th and the intrinsic political condition of voters, the first step is to raise the voice of truth, convinced that, no matter the violence that followed, on that day, Venezuelans spoke with resounding clarity.
Secondly, being strong and resilient doesn’t only mean protesting in the streets. To remain active in defending the true results, we must protect ourselves, stay alert, and manage our energies carefully.
For those who risked their lives in the last several weeks and months of campaigning, protection from state terror means moving between hiding places and waiting for an embassy in Caracas to process dozens of refugee requests.
For others, staying in the streets protesting to the very end is just impossible. “Now, the end of this is in God’s hands,” said Richard, who volunteered on the 28th and went out to demonstrate in Catia the next day. “I’ve been running around on my bike and saw things are getting quiet again. We already took a huge step.”

THOMAS FANON MAKING TIME! Here's a little doodle I made the other day. We don't see many electric engines in TTTE so here's a bit of a concept for how I think they're dynamics would be, since britian never really had electric trains on a wide scale until modernization we never really got to see how engines of that type see things, which where mainly in the US and continental europe. "Steam ain't going away kid, we tried that in 1905..."
Tumblr media
Electric Locomotives hold a bit off an odd place in the wider social world of the railways. They're almost as old as steam engines, the first beginning operation in 1899 and many of them initially acted similarly to how we see diesels do around steam engines in the show/books. "It's the 20th Century teapot! Electric traction is the future, New York may have been the first to realize how messy and outdated you things are but soon every city and country in the world will follow!" but overtime that kind of mindset went away as the 20th century ground on and those early electrics realized steam wasn't going anywhere I'd imagine later 1920s and 1930s like say a GG1 built types would harbor no ill will towards their steam counterparts. (if I ever see another ttte story set in the northeast and a gg1 is an asshole to a steam engine I am going to SCREAM there are steam engines younger than this thing for crying out loud!)
Tumblr media
I would imagine 1950s/60s things would change though. The electric locomotives built in that period shared a lot with the diesels that where replacing steam, in appearance and mechanics. I'd imagine they might ally themselves with diesels but maybe they'd be hostile to both steam engines, steam era electric types, AND diesels. Either way I feel like older electric engines would ally themselves with the steam locos due to already having some comradery with them and facing the same fate of scrap. But to the probable surprise of all parties involved, a lot of those steam era electric locomotives survived way longer than the engines the time they're from is named after, with a lot of examples of things like old boxcab electrics and things like the gg1 lasting into the 1980s, but overall that just made their fate come later than the steam engines they once knew. So yeag electric trens really cool and good consider em in your thomas stuff since it's something i don't see touched on.

Dark Hunter Locust (he/him). For years this sentient Rahi was being studied and experimented on by Makuta Chirox in his lab on Destral. As Chirox was studying Locust, the bug was studying all the other Rahi that Chirox made. Locust was often given masks, something none of the other Rahi were ever given. Sometimes when the masks were worn he could breathe underwater or see through walls. One day Chirox got a new test subject, a Tatoran named Torau. she was from the Tren Krom Peninsula and made a deal with Chirox to be his test subject for getting out of there. Torau taught Locust how to speak matoran. Soon Torau and Locust became close friends. then one day Makuta Gorast destroy the lab. In the chaos Locust got his claws on a Huna and was able to sneak out of the lab. When trying to go back for his friend he saw Gorast taking all the Matoran from the lab away. Locust tried to fallow them but was not able to get to them before the air ship left the island. For many years Locust searched for his friend but no Matoran wanted to help a beast of Rahi. Some were only willing to trade information for doing mercenary work for them. Over time word of a Rahi that can use Kanohi and was good mercenary reach the island of Odina. The Shadowed One sent for Locust to be brought before him. finding out about Torau he promise to help finder her if Locust swore loyalty to him, Locust was more than happy too. The Shadowed One gave him a Faxon to help him take out his targets. Little did Locust know that she had been killed the day she was taken in front of her Village to make point to never betray Gorast. The Shadowed One's agents discovered this information and reported it back, the information did not upset him at all he was going to have the Tatoran killed anyway. Now he had info that can weaponize Locust fully against Gorast need be, until that day the Shadowed One can just string Locust along.

Vohmekii: I heard that when Mutran went to Tren Krom’s domain, he carved “Mitrann waz heer” into a tree like a crazy person!
Some Matoran named Seradoka visited me, telling me that he went there, and read the message thinking that it was signs of children going to the area. Tren Krom apparently tried to lure Seradoka in by pretending to be a group of steltian orphans, yes, a GROUP of them, that were for some reason stranded on the island, and hadn’t left in years.
"I would it be surprised mutton did that, as for Seradoka? I have never met a matoran named Seradoka. Who are they?

đŸ‡ș🇾 SebastiĂĄn de Romero Radigales was a Spanish diplomat who, in April 1943, arrived in Athens as Spain's Consul General during World War II. From the outset, Romero committed to saving Sephardic Jews in Greece, managing to protect their assets at the Spanish Embassy and offering them Spanish nationality. His resistance led to a confrontation with the German ambassador GĂŒnter Altenburg, who unsuccessfully tried to halt Romero's efforts to prevent the deportation of Jews to concentration camps. Although 48,000 Jews from Thessaloniki were deported between March and June 1943, Romero managed to evacuate 150 Sephardic Jews on an Italian military train and continued fighting for another 367, who were finally transferred to Spain in February 1944. In 2014, the Yad Vashem Museum recognized Romero as Righteous Among the Nations for his bravery and humanitarianism. Other Spanish diplomats, such as Ángel Sanz-Briz and Eduardo Propper de CallejĂłn, were also distinguished for their heroic actions during the war.

A Colorado management company has shared brutal surveillance footage and a photo of a bloodied employee to illustrate its ongoing problem with a violent Venezuelan migrant gang.
Brooklyn-based CBZ Management, which operates 11 complexes in Colorado, has said that members of Tren de Aragua commandeered entire apartment buildings in Aurora by threatening its employees and tried to extort the company for a cut of rent money in exchange for their continued operation of the properties.
One of the company's buildings made national headlines earlier this year after surveillance footage showed a heavily-armed group of men, allegedly members of the Venezuelan prison gang, making their way through The Edge at Lowry apartments and speaking in Spanish.
The most recent footage shows one of CBZ's representatives being assaulted after he refused to accept a bribe at the Whispering Pines Complex at the end of 2023, the company told Fox 31.
The company wrote on X that the employee found a group of male squatters in a recently vacated apartment and would not accept $500 to "overlook the situation."
The man was beaten so severely that he had to be treated at a hospital, the company said.
"I think they were trying to kill me. I don’t know how I got out, but I got out," that representative, whose bloodied photograph was shown by the management company on X, told Fox 31.
After the attack, the company said, the employee began to receive threats via text message that included his home address and spouse's name.
A police report from the incident obtained from the 18th Judicial District Court by Denver 7 shows that one of the company's property managers was assaulted by documented Tren de Aragua member Yoendry Vilchez Medina-Jose in November 2023. It was not immediately clear if that was the same incident.
After the incident, the company said its representatives met with members of the FBI. The agency allegedly confirmed that members of Tren de Aragua were behind the text messages and the building takeovers but that the issue was a "blip on the radar" due to the Venezuelan gang's growing national presence.
The FBI could not immediately be reached for comment.
CBZ also said that the gangs took over a tenant's apartment while on vacation, forcing the tenant to find a new place to live when he returned home.
"Gangs have taken control of several of our properties in Aurora, Colorado," the company wrote in a thread on X last week. "In an attempt to discredit this fact for political purposes and avoid governmental accountability, some have spread false information about our situation."
The firm said that it has had to pull its workers back from its apartment complexes in Aurora.
"Despite clear evidence, many still deny the reality of the situation, sometimes using us as scapegoats. That’s why we are no longer staying silent," the company wrote. "We will continue to counter falsehoods with simple facts and evidence. Yes, gangs did take control of our apartment complexes in Aurora, Colorado, and the government did nothing. That is the real story."
The Aurora Police Department told Denver 7 that it has "not yet obtained evidence of a gang takeover at any CBZ properties."
"We’ve acknowledged it’s likely gang members have and/or are residing at CBZ properties, but as you know from experience you could say the same about a lot of different gangs and a lot of different properties throughout the metro area," a representative told the outlet.
Likewise, a spokesperson for Aurora told the New York Post that the company's claims were "exaggerations."
"These delinquent property owners, managers and/or ‘investors’ conveniently fail to acknowledge that their own bank lenders took them to court in the last few weeks where a judge ordered some of their problematic properties into receivership," the spokesperson said. "That means a judge has given the legal authority to a third-party receiver to actually manage the properties, and who the property owners will be forced to compensate."
Last Friday, former President Donald Trump visited Aurora and linked the alleged gang problems in the city to the Biden-Harris administration's border policies.
According to Denver 7, CBZ Management has a history of citations dating back to 2020, with violations ranging from mice infestations to dozens of illegally parked cars to ceiling damage. Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman characterized the management company as "slumlords," KDVR reported.
"It’s a little late to play the Venezuelan gang card," Coffman said. "Certainly, there are other parts of the city that we’re looking at, that we’re concerned about that. But the problems in this building certainly precede any problems with Venezuelan gangs."
CBZ Management said that the city "drummed up 'code violations'" to cover up the presence of the foreign gang, according to its posts on X. The company said it "received a perfect inspection in 2022 and 2023," and that any violations have been "dealt with."
"The only violations that weren’t dealt with were when the gangs took over and we didn’t want our 6 on-site staff working there — for their safety," the company said.
Media and government officials are downplaying the impact of Venezuelan gangs in Aurora, one woman who moved out of her apartment earlier this year due to increasing violence told Fox News Digital.
"I feel like it's a slap in the face," Cindy Romero said. "How many gangs is OK to have in Aurora? How many properties is OK to take over? How many people, who are citizens paying their bills, is it OK to displace?"

Failure, fear, mistake, and secret for my husband Tren
Alright I expected you’d ask about him. Here we go:
Failure - Greatest failure?
As a Zevdie (an original glitch demon species), he’s had to possess innocents in the past. Normally this isn’t a major problem for him to co-exist alongside humans while disguised as one
until a particular possession forced him to jump from the body of a dying father into the man’s young daughter who Tren had absolutely gotten attached to during the time. Unfortunately possessions by Zevdie result in the host’s death and he realized that too late, blaming himself years later for cutting her life far too short.
Fear - Greatest fear? What do when confronted about it? Tell or hide?
His greatest fear is probably his abusive ex finding him again. Especially after the threats that were made prior to him possessing his last host. If confronted about it, he initially tries to ignore the question but will crack with enough prodding and talk despite how uncomfortable it makes him.
Mistake - Worst mistake? What led to mistake? Fixed it? How have moved on?
Tren’s worst mistake was probably being naive enough at first that he attracted the wrong attention and was
pressured into a relationship with another who took full advantage of him. Given the only periods of escape he had was while he was possessing others, he still has yet to completely get away.
Secret - What’s one secret doesn’t want anyone to know?
Tren isn’t exactly a complete Zevdie. His power levels don’t match up with the rest of his supposed kind and, above all else, he has that unique back tattoo of a tree
