Mvelo Mahlangu in NYC, Day 4
The beautiful sun showed it face today and bathed New York in sunshine. From the apartment, the illusion was that it was warmer out. I was very wrong. It in fact felt a little bit colder than the previous days.
Today, I was headed to Brooklyn again for a class in Tree pruning & care. Once I got out the train station in Brooklyn, I knew where I was. I was right by the Domino Sugar Refinery that I saw from yesterday's cruise tour. I definitely knew I wanted to stop by the factory after the class. Walking towards the community garden, I noticed a little Japanese convenience store and quickly went in. I felt like I was in a genuine Japanese store back in my grandparents hometown and when I saw all the deserts, nostalgia hit me.
With an onigiri in one hand and packaged mochi in the other, I happily continued the walk. I really liked the area of Brooklyn I was in. It was a lot more quiet, not a lot of tall buildings, and very residential areas with many coffee shops around. In Manhattan, it's very easy to feel isolated, where as here, I felt like I could bump into an old friend.
The community garden was a little slice of nature surrounded by residential buildings. It was refreshing too see as I haven't seen any parks or open land yet. The instructor William started talking to us about trees and how they grow, what organs they have and their functionings. Sometimes in the rush of life, it's easy to forget that trees are also these living organisms that are trying their best at each moment to survive and are not just in existence for the purposes of humans. William spoke to us on why we prune trees, what to identify and what tools are needed. The primary reason we prune trees is for human aesthetic choices, then comes the other reasonings like keeping tress healthy or giving it the best chance to live longer.
As we went around pruning and sawing parts of the trees off, I must say, I really did think about how we humans keep trying to bend nature to the confines of our society. Cutting or 'pruning' a young trees branch off because we predict it to grow into the building next to it which will cause a problem in the future... If there were no buildings around would we still do the same thing? Supposedly pruning does not harm the tree if done correctly and is done in winter as opposed to summer to avoid infection & disease from entering the 'wound'. So another question begs "At what point do we let nature run its course and at what point do we step in to intervene?"
I'm definitely caught in this thought that we've separated ourselves so much from nature that we forget we are a part of it too.
After the freezing walk about and pruning of trees, I decided to quickly walk to the Domino Sugar Factory. It was refreshing walking based on line-of-sight as opposed to constantly looking at my phone for directions. The building was incredibly huge. What fascinated me the most was the relationship between the former original brick exterior and the use of glass as the new interior/exterior. So almost like a glass box with a dome above, nestled into a big brick box. That is the best use of architectural coexistence in preserving history that I've seen so far. I need to do more research on the building to contextualise and understand its functions better.
I sat by the river, ate some lunch and made my way back to the apartment to go rest. Body clock is still adjusting so I was really exhausted. Once I got to the apartment, I extensively cleaned the space and prepped for the last activity on my calendar which was a guided meditation class. I took a 15 minute nap only to wake up 3 hours later and 20 minutes before the online class. feeling a bit drowsy I pushed on into the meditation class which helped me relax more as I called for affirmation "I forgive myself and everyone" amongst other affirmations. Apparently each area of your body houses a chakra which taps into different aspects of emotion/feeling. This took me back to the conversation the night before I had with someone who also attended improv jam where he spoke on chakra's and how his meditation journey has helped keep him looking and feeling youthful.
Right afterwards, I fell asleep and reminded myself to watch the movie "Into the woods" in the morning.

the truth about love
summary: Mr. and Mrs. Higgins meet Race for the first time.
read on: archive of our own
warning: mild mentions of homophobia, badly translated italian :)
Wind pushed against any second thoughts, whispering taunts and epithets of cowardice. Commitment had been confirmed. They had volunteered themselves to rejection.
Spot glanced at Race, forcing himself not to be tense. Race was worried enough, anxiously tapping his foot as he looked at the world outside of the car window through unfocused eyes.
The wind was rustling the auburn leaves of the highway trees, disturbing their comfortable peace. Spot scowled at the crackling branches. They didn’t know upheaval. They weren’t driving their boyfriend to his parent’s house for an Italian Catholic Sunday dinner. Trees didn’t need to come out to their parents. How rude of them to even tremor.
The New York suburb of Race’s childhood was just forty five minutes out of Brooklyn, just forty five minutes from the dorm which Spot and Race shared. Race’s parents were delighted that Race had found a closeby college with friends whom he could be close with. They were pleased when Race had asked them if Spot could come over for dinner. It would have been a disgrace to lines of ancestors if Race had left his roommate without dinner on a Sunday. He had to come.
But Race knew he had to be honest. Race knew who he was. Race knew what Spot meant to him. Race knew that last night’s sleepless thoughts of self-encouragement had made him as ready as he knew he ever would be. Race did not know, however, what would come of his open revelation.
The green sign screamed at the pair from overhead. Exit 43. Ten minutes left.
Spot reached to Race’s knee, resting the back of his hand on the fabric and inviting Race’s fingers to join his own.
How you doing?”
Race felt the warmth and pressure of Spot’s hand before turning towards the driver’s seat to respond.
“I am preparing for the world to end.”
Spot chuckled, eyes still on the road as he guided Race’s hand to his lips.
“Happily?”
“With you?” Race joked, quivering in his smile.
Spot turned slightly to raise his eyebrows at Race.
Race sighed, “This is gonna happen. I just gotta...do it.”
Spot smiled, though grim. His grin was trapped beneath the windshield, as the outside world was full of ridiculously typical family homes. One on the left, two on the right. Backyard on the left, helmeted family biking on the right. Race was looking green.
“That one. Pull in there.”
Spot obeyed the quiet voice and rounded into the drive. Park. Brake. Engine off.
Their hands were curled into each other, together, empowering.
“I love you.” Race quaked.
Spot lifted the corner of his mouth. An unsteady breath with a safe, present clutch of hands.
Spot let Race open his own door and enter his old world. His feet traced his childhood steps, with the foreign Spot balancing slowly behind. Race took a deep breath as he lifted his hand, curled into a cold, distant fist. One last glance at Spot for lovely fortitude. He would knock. He would, he would-
“Antonio! Amore mio, oh, come here.”
Race was stunned into a hug, hand still clenched in preparation for the latent knock that never came. He peered bashfully at Spot through a hole in the entwined embrace, receiving a jesting eyebrow raise in response.
“Oh, Antonio. I heard your car pull into the driveway and I could not wait. It’s so wonderful to see you!”
Race weaved his way out of the hug, still holding his mother’s arms as she grasped his.
“Hi, mamma.”
“Oh, it’s so good to see you.”
“You too, mamma,” Race replied, wanting to mean it. His mother’s eyes were so warm and her hands so protecting. He wished he could be what she wanted.
“Oh, and this must be Sean! It’s so nice to meet you, come here!.” She jerked Spot into a hug, drowning his thin Irish bones in Italian skin. Race laughed and felt too comfortable. He was glad he was who he was, if only to love this moment.
She gripped Spot’s shoulders as she let go, veiling his shaking muscles with her wild grip.
“Come, we must eat!”
Race brushed Spot’s hand as he lead him into the foyer. It was full of framed photographs of gap-toothed school pictures, lining a white hallway that led to a cornucopian kitchen. Spot smirked at the young face of Race before turning to the grown, slightly flustered countenance. Race was composed enough to wink at Spot before his mother whirled around to haul the boys to the dining room table.
The table was set, with wildflowers in a sky vase in the center. Clean chinets were placed on vinyl mats at four seats. One end was empty and the opposite was full of a wide man. He had thick eyebrows that were set atop his eyes, comfortably judging with authority.
“Hello, Antonio. How are you?”
It seemed like Race should have bowed or offered a sacrifice. But he just grinned carefully and chuckled a bit.
“Hey, Dad. I’m good, thanks. It’s good to see you.”
Spot smiled at the scene. He’s sure he saw this in a classic sentimental painting. Alas, he knows there is more beyond the ornamental frame.
Mr. Higgins shook Race’s hand, crinkling his eyes though hiding his closed-mouth smile beneath his pruned moustache.
“You must be Sean.”
Spot froze in the shadow of the door frame. He let his eyes seek comfort in Race before balancing his body on his spine, assuming military posture.
“Yes, sir. It’s nice to meet you...sir.”
Race rolled his eyes, too fond to notice how awkward the communication was. Mr. Higgins just chuckled, like a mafia gangster might, and reached out his hand. He was not leaving the head of the table.
“And you. I am glad that Antonio got a roommate that he didn’t hate.”
Spot raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah...me too?”
Mr. Higgins chuckled again in the same gruff, superior manner.
“Good kid.”
Mrs. Higgins shuffled in with too many dishes of various sauced foods.
“Sit down, boys, eat!!!”
The smell forced them to oblige.
After dinner, they sat around the dirty dishes, laughing over small talk. Spot hadn’t said a word, only listening to Race relax. Spot had heard of storytimes and holidays and game nights and laughter. Race loved his parents and his parents loved the Antonio they knew, Spot knew that much from his first loud, Italian dinner. If only love lasted.
“So, Mamma...Dad...I have something...to tell you guys.”
He looked at them, eyes naturally drifting to meet Spot’s as they moved from his sauce-soaked plate to the dark eyes of his parents.
“Antonio?” His mother leaned onto her toes, ready to leap into a comforting hug or a defensive battle. His father’s expression remained blank, hidden behind thick walls of shadowed hair.
“I’m…” His eyes left the room. “I’m really happy to be here...at home...here...with you guys.”
Spot’s exhale surprised him.
Race’s mother leaned back, clutching her hands to her heart.
“Oh, Antonio!”
“He just wants to get out of doing the dishes,” Mr. Higgins retorted, mustache twitching with a scoff.
Race laughed timorously and looked down. Spot’s skin itched.
“Oh, be quiet. He’s worked hard and deserves a break. You boys go on upstairs. Your video games are still plugged in, Antonio. Allora avanti! Go on!”
Race looked at Spot and Spot looked back, both too stunned to grin. Slow motion filtered their movements as they pushed in their chairs and left the dining room. Spot murmured an unheard thank you before following Race out of the room and up a set of carpeted beige stairs.
One corner turned and a door opened before Spot was leaning against a navy wall, watching Race shove his hands in his pockets and sit on his bed.
Spot chuckled at Race’s careful smile, leaning his head back against the cold wall. Turning, he watched Race’s childhood unfold on the walls. Calendars with ancient years, photographs of laughing boys, band posters.
“Thank you for coming with me.” Race breathed, rocking the springs so that they screamed.
“Not a problem.” Spot slowly led his legs lead him across the room. “So I heard video games.”
The two took themselves to a bean bag for some Mario Kart, which Spot lost miserably because “They don’t call me Race for nothing!”
Race had leaned into Spot’s shoulder, laughing in his ear. Spot’s raised hair chilled his body. He had left his skin in Brooklyn. His tongue chapped his lips, anticipating interruption. He would not kiss Race, he would not kiss Race, “Swept the round again, Spot!”, God, he wanted to kiss Race...
“Ciao, boys! Dinner is all cleaned up, come down for dessert!” Mrs. Higgins broke the fragile safety. Spot’s blood left him.
“Sweet, Mamma, thanks.” Race was getting up, smiling at his mother, eyes away. Mrs. Higgins smiled, pleased, and returned downstairs.
Race gave Spot his hand, raising Spot from the engulfing bean bag to stand in front of him, so close he could have felt Spot’s breath if he wasn’t holding it.
“Hey.”
Exhale.
“Hey.”
“We should probably get going in a bit, if we want to leave before five,” Race said to Spot’s eyes.
“Yeah.”
“I find it amusing how much more composed I am than you. This is my coming-out dinner.” Race was joking, fingers following familiar patterns on Spot’s palm.
“I’m nervous so you don’t have to be. It’s called support, Racetrack.”
Race laughed, letting his lips find Spot’s cheek in less than a moment, before tugging Spot towards the door.
“C’mon. I miss biscotti.”
Spot watched Race walk to the door, toes curling around nineties carpet.
“They love you, you know.”
Race didn’t turn around.
“Yeah. For now.”
Mr. Higgins hadn’t moved. Spot spent the first few minutes of dessert trying to guess how tall he was while Mrs. Higgins entertained herself with Race’s academic affairs, proud and contented. Race was telling his plate of biscotti his grades.
“And you, Sean, what are you doing at school?”
Spot’s nerve ran around the house. Upon its return, he cleared his throat.
“English.”
Mrs. Higgins’ pink face rounded as she smiled, but Mr. Higgins spoke first.
“English?”
Spot felt his blood pool in his feet. Maybe he’d melt.
“Uh...yeah. I like to read, sir. Mister.” Men horrified Spot. How ironic.
Mr. Higgins only nodded as Mrs. Higgins fussed.
“Don’t let him frighten you, caro. He used to read plenty before numbers and math took over. Reading is so cute!”
Spot blinked.
“Er...thanks.”
“I have a boyfriend.”
Slow followed the rapid confession. Not one heart dared to beat.
“Sean. Sean is my boyfriend.” Race was only loud enough to be audible, unwilling to repeat himself.
Mr. Higgins choked on his throat’s surprise, murmuring “Jesus Christ.”
Mrs. Higgins veiled her eyes, pressing them tight, pressing her mouth tight. Silence. Spot responded to their silence with silence. Race tried to do the same, but was breathing too hard.
“We should go,” Race stuttered and stood, pursuing Spot’s willing hand and planning to be in Brooklyn by the end of the minute.
“Antonio?” The tense air pressed the word to Race. He froze at the front door, his old front door, the entrance and the exit.
“Yes?” Spot only saw Race’s words.
“Where are you going?”
“Back to school.” If Race closed his eyes, they would release his years of disguise. His mother looked back at him.
“I don’t want you to leave.”
Spot stepped forward, building protection, prevention. Race let himself slink into his next words.
“I don’t want there to be a first time that I am hurt by my parents.”
Mrs. Higgins felt her heart twitch.
“I don’t want to hurt you. If you left now, you would be making that decision for me.”
“But God...the crosses...saying grace before meals, going to Church every week, sin, sin, sin.” Race’s skin inundated red. Spot used his wrists to tie his hands unmoving.
Mrs. Higgins took her son’s hand, looking to Spot before contact. He raised his chin, watching so she knew she was being watched. He was there.
“My God believes in love.”
Race’s heart hovered and soared, ending in a gripping hug with his mother, his first hug.
Alive in the foyer, they all caught sight of Mr. Higgins, standing for the first time at the end of the hallway. He was taller, scarier than Spot had expected.
“Thank you, Antonio, for telling us.”
Race blinked, embracing his tears now and letting his years of loneliness dance away.
Race tripped over to his father and grasped the beginning around his wide shoulders.
“It’ll…” Mr. Higgins cleared his throat, trying hard to find appropriate words. “It’ll take some time before I’m used to this. Before I get it right.”
“I’m glad that we have time.” Mr. Higgins let his arms down and hugged his son back.
Spot suddenly realized he was being hugged by Race’s mother, listening to Italian words in a sweet, desperate voice. She smelt like pasta sauce, the same pasta sauce Race made on rainy weekends. He felt his life rewind and start again, with hugs.
After Race had embraced his parents a few times more, words light and light bright, his hand joined Spot’s.
“Thank you for dinner, mamma. We’ll come back.”
“Grazie, amore miei.” My loves.
They floated down the walkway, together. Spot thought once and opened Race’s door for him. Race waved at his parents through the windshield as Spot walked around the back of the car to the driver’s side, never planning on standing between family.
Race stared at his house through bright eyes, through the chipping garage door, through the freshly opened walls, to freshly opened hearts.
Spot started Race’s car, an old friend from the gift of high school years.
His hand rested on the gear shift. Race’s hand rested upon Spot’s.
Spot looked towards Race, Race looked towards Spot. They both looked towards the future.
Spot smiled and laughed a little.
“Well, that went well.”

Brooklyn’s 100-Year-Old Japanese Garden Is Like a Living Painting
Photo by IIP Photo Archive, via Flickr.

A slender path rambles through Japanese white pines and Fullmoon maples, over rock terraces, and up to the threshold of a Shinto shrine, before lapping back down to the banks of a koi-filled pond. It winds over a manicured wooden bridge, a serene waterfall cascading beneath it, and passes by stone lanterns. Viewers who stroll this path are privy to the dynamic design of the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, what plant curator Brian Funk calls “a complete work of art that involves art, architecture, and horticulture.”
“It’s kind of like entering a special world,” Funk continues, nodding to the otherworldly experience of meandering through the tranquil space. And rightly so; it’s one of the oldest and most visited Japanese public gardens outside of Japan, and it’s in the heart of Brooklyn.
Bordered by Crown Heights and Prospect Heights, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is perched on the edge of Prospect Park, just a quick walk from the Brooklyn Museum and the formidable Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza. But spend some time under the foliage and wisps of wisteria, and the bustling noise of central Brooklyn seems to dissipate. Only upon exiting does the question arise of how the Japanese gem ended up in Brooklyn.

The garden’s designer, Japanese landscape architect, Takeo Shiota, arrived in the United States in 1907. While growing up in Japan, he had explored the country by foot, in search of natural beauty. The resulting discoveries and knowledge of gardens that he gleaned during that time would inspire the Brooklyn oasis.
The garden is something of a Japanese-American hybrid, Funk explains. Constructed between 1914 and 1915, the Hill-and-Pond Garden was the first Japanese garden to be built inside a public garden in the United States.
In contrast to most formal European gardens, which typically employ perpendicular lines and symmetry, Japanese gardens mirror nature. “It’s a dynamic landscape, so your eye is always moving, so there’s usually not one main focal point,” Funk explains, “it changes all the time.” With the Brooklyn garden, Shiota aimed to mimic Japan’s mountainous landscape and rocky coastline.
In addition to a viewing pavilion resembling a tea house and a waiting bench, both of which are used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, the garden is home to an authentic (priest-blessed) Shinto shrine, along with various stone lanterns that peek out from excavated grass hills and an undulating shoreline. The architect employed a technique called “hide and reveal,” Funk explains, “where things are purposefully hidden so you have to turn corners and walk around hills and trees, to see the rest of the garden.”

Amidst the 19th-century craze for Japanese culture and design in the West—known as Japonisme—once the country opened its borders in 1853, interest in Japanese architecture flourished as well. Funk notes that Japanese art and design began appearing in exhibitions and World’s Fairs across the U.S. It was through one such fair that a traditional Japanese tea house landed in Philadelphia’s Japanese Garden, Shofuso, after it exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1954.
However, the tide quickly changed. During World War II, anti-Japanese sentiment erupted, resulting in widespread discrimination and ultimately, internment camps. The same rampant fanatic nationalism propelled the temporary shuttering of the Hill-and-Pond Garden, among similar sites across the country that had become popular in the century prior.
In 1938, the Shinto shrine was set ablaze, and shortly after, the gardens closed—although Funk posits that because the fire occurred prior to Pearl Harbor and U.S. entrance in the war, it may have only been an act of vandalism. The wrecking and closing of gardens, however, proved widespread. “It happened everywhere in the country,” he explains, “it wasn’t unique to Brooklyn.”
“I think every Japanese garden in American was closed during the war and for sometime after,” Funk says. “They mostly didn’t recover until the ’60s or ’70s.”
Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden. Photo by Louis Buhle. C. 1916. © Brooklyn Botanic GardenCourtesy of Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Only after the war, starting in the late 1940s, were the gardens restored by Japanese-American gardener Frank Masao Okamura, who also cultivated the Botanic Garden’s renowned Bonsai collection, after his own release from an internment camp in California. A total revamp of the Japanese gardens at the turn of the 21st century restored the Shinto shrine and the Hill-and-Pond Garden to Shiota’s original conception. (Around the same time, Funk became the garden’s plant curator, tending to its various foliage, from Snow Azaleas to Peacock moss to Japanese Water Irises.)
The Hill-and-Pond Garden’s spirited landscape has served as the canvas for a variety of artists in recent decades, including steel and rock sculptures by Isamu Noguchi in 2015. Today, it’s host to tea ceremonies on its pondside viewing pavilion. While not a proper “tea house,” Funk says a Japanese structure like this one “would have been perhaps a side building of a mansion back then, owned by feudal lords, so this would have been a place to kind of escape to.”
If you kneel down at the entrance to the pavilion, Funk notes, you can see what he considers the best view of the garden, in his words, “a three-dimensional painting, framed by the rectangular architecture,” or put simply, “a living painting.”
While spring, in time for the famed cherry blossoms, is perhaps the most popular season for the garden, fall, too, is particularly stunning. It’s rife with autumnal bursts of yellow and pale orange leaves. The occasional delicate pink blooms of Camellia sasanqua frame the waiting bench, while Japanese maples fill the garden with brilliant shades of crimson and violet—a natural phenomenon that has been fodder for myriad poems and songs in Japanese history.
And even winter sets the stage for an unexpected-yet-enchanting experience of the garden’s charming flora and vegetation.
The trees, Funk explains, were intentionally planted on a 45-degree slant by Shiota, and they’re pruned to hold snow. “It’s actually called cloud pruning,” Funk says, gesturing to the somewhat Seussian shapes the trees take on. “I think they look best when there’s a little snow.”

Mercedes Elgarte in NYC, Days 24, 25
On Saturday I went back to Brooklyn to visit the Botanic Garden, Public Library and Prospect Park. I walked around the park by myself and then I had a guided tour that was amazing. The lady that guided us was so passionate about plants and their particular way of living, growing and reproducing, it was interesting to listen to her; and some aspects that she pointed out were pretty much philosophical issues about life. There were two things she explained that I founded fascinated. At The Bonsai Museum, she showed the different techniques of pruning and soil that allowed humans to create miniature trees. However, you can manipulate the growth and size of the roots and branches, but not the size of the flowers, which were out of scale. “We can manipulate many things in nature, but not everything”, she reflected. Then she showed us two trees (a bonsai and an apple tree) that were half dead and half living. She said that life and death are two sides of the same, coin but somehow nature always tends to live. The shapes of the trees finding the way to survive were incredible.
At night I went to contra-dance lesson and dance, with live music. Many of the activities programmed put me in a place of an absolute beginner (especially the dancing lessons). At first, it makes me uncomfortable, but then I find it stimulating. Contra-dance it quite difficult, the choreographies are complicated and you have to spin around a lot that sometimes it makes me dizzy. Still, I managed to dance for almost 3 hours! I was surprised about how welcoming people are, the experimented dancers were encouraging the new ones to dance and guided us somehow! So I didn’t feel set aside for not knowing, on the contrary, everyone was cool and willing to dance. I had that same feeling with my group at the Panorama challenge.
Sunday morning went to the Empire State building, invited by Thomas Keltner, a charming and very interesting man that works for the company and had the chance to meet some days ago. The sights were magnificent. I liked the welcome to everyone’s banners written in different languages. This is one of the main NYC attractions, so you may think that is the reason. But that same banner was placed in the Brooklyn Public Library, that is not so tourist, so I would say that there is a spirit of welcoming typical from New Yorkers.
Sunday afternoon went to a Hula Dance lesson, it was very fun and difficult, the movements are continuous and subtle. There is a basic movement called HALU (hope the spelling is correct) that comes from the belly button and repeats into any direction. I enjoyed the class.
Finally, I went to a Hare Krishna Ceremony. It was very joyful, people danced, played instruments and sang for almost 3 hours. There were also children running and dancing. Every hour, a lady walked around splashing water and another lady walked with a flower in her hand and invited people to feel the scent. I found this really beautiful. Later there was a vegetarian meal that was delicious. The Hare Krishna mantra was so catchy, it stood on my head for many hours. Many times I felt I wanted to leave, the repetition was difficult, but I stayed. It was a good exercise of patience. Then I thought that the Hula dance is a kind of mantra of movement as well.
