Now Arek is stuck as king, a role that comes with a magical catch: choose a spouse by your eighteenth birthday, or wither away into nothing.

With his eighteenth birthday only three months away, and only Matt in on the secret, Arek embarks on a desperate bid to find a spouse to save his life—starting with his quest companions. But his attempts at wooing his friends go painfully and hilariously wrong…until he discovers that love might have been in front of him all along.

Review

Sooooo I finished it. And I'm not happy. Let's get to by starting with my biggest gripe, namely

The Characters

who are all really bland and don't exceed their initial stereotypes. Arek is the typical chosen one protagonists who becomes the new king of Eres after defeating the evil wizard. He's sarcastic, dimwitted and brave. Matt, his love interest and sidekick, is the typical booksmart mage. Bethany the beautiful bard is flirtatious and... flirtatious. And beautiful. Sionna is the stoic warrior. Rion is the stoic, virtuous knight. Lila is the thief, so she... likes money. The side characters are cardboard cutouts as well. I would write more about them, but I don't remember a single one by name, except Meredith, who is... Sionna's girlfriend and that's it. The most memorable side character was the wise wizard mentor who nopes out in the beginning and is never mentioned again.

So our merry party is a bunch of one-dimensional misfits whom I did not care about at all. We usually see them interact with Arek, and they all have the same manner of bantering with him, except Rion who was not into wordplay and thus dubbed the slightly boring one. I believe he got the least focus in the book, too. They told me they grew together as a family, but I didn't really get that impression. They were continuously horrible to each other, which I will get to now as I'm moving on to

The Story

which initially sounds promising! Arek and his friends defeated the evil wizard, Arek gets crowned king and everyone becomes a council member fitting to their respective strengths (Bethany is the diplomat, Rion trains the knights, Sionna heads the castle guard, Lila is the treasurer and Matt the court mage). But it turns out that Arek is now cursed and needs to be married before his 18th birthday or else he'll die, so some romantic shenaningas ensue as he tries to woo one of his friends while also grappling with his one-sided love for Matt.

The execution of the story is where it all falls apart though, and that has two main reasons:

1) Arek. A lot of the plot could have been avoided if he had a brain. He's just genuinely stupid and misses important facts even as they are directly told to him. It's not the endearing kind of stupid, it's really aggravating. Furthermore, despite being dubbed "King Arek the Kind" and Matt continuously reiterating how selfless Arek is, he... really isn't? He plots to woo one of his friends (without ever telling them about the curse) and enlists Matt to help him. Im his desperation he really doesn't care who he'll end up with, so he quickly jumps from Sionna (who turns out to be a lesbian) to Bethany (whom, he randomly decides, he embarrassed himself too much to woo her), Rion (who didn't give him any signs) to Lila. And honestly it was Lila where the book lost me completely, because he essentially drugs her so she reveals her heart's desire, which has to be the most selfish thing he could have done (instead of just TALKING to her!). She reveals her feelings for someone else and that's it. He gets a stern talking to and that's it, and he even makes light of it by saying that it turned out fine for Lila so what does it matter that he breached her trust and potentially could have humiliated her???? And Lila even agrees with him! Anyway, after that he woos some random people he doesn't care about because he only loves Matt, but somehow is just too stupid to do anything about it. He was the worst thing that happened to this story, seriously.

2) The Plot. I don't know how it's possible to have so much happen all at once while also not have anything relevant happen at all. So they slay the big bad, Arek becomes king, he gets attacked by snipers, gets cursed, has some diplomatic affairs, Arek concocts his romance plots using a dead princess's diary as a guideline, they get attacked by an octopus, they get attacked by a crow (Lila's pet), Lila gets drugged, they throw a masquerade ball, the end happens. That's a lot for some 330 pages, but all of it is so inconsequential that it felt all pointless! The characters didn't grow from any of this, they didn't learn anything, and each "action sequence" ended with Arek fainting and waking up next to Matt who chastises him. It all felt very disconnected from each other and didn't give me the impression of one cohesive story - it felt a bit like old cartoons with a "monster of the week" gimmick. The octopus attacked, they fought it, it was never mentioned again. Enter the crow, enter the next love quarrel section, nothing matters here! The story was just very inconsequential, similarly to

The Worldbuilding

which honestly barely existed - and the existing parts were stupid. So we're in a vague fantasy world, precicely the Kingdom Ere of Chickpea, which had been ruled by Barthly The Vile One, an evil wizard. There are pixies, fae/elves, giant octopi and other monsters. Apart from that, the world is not described at all so I imagined a generic fantasy RPG backdrop scenery tbh.

Magic users are often discriminated against because regular people fear them - and honestly I get it, because the magic in this world is just super random and unpredictable. The primary magician is Matt, who can practically do anything: Repair stuff, clean stuff, set up magical barriers, turn people into toads (which he often threatened), blast enemies with fireballs, poison his friends with weird flowers, etc. On the other hand we have very rigid magical rules that just exist because. One is the throne succession which can only achieved by killing the previous ruler (thus making Arek the next king since he killed Barthly) and the other is the magical soulbinding law which very explicitedly states that the ruler has to marry before they turn 18 and bind their soul to another. Allegedly, Matt researched those laws to no avail, so our explanation to all the "how?" and "why?" questions remain unanswered. Same goes for the prophecy which basically foretold the entire plot of the book in great detail. The best thing about the prophecy was the allusion to several oracles making up a bunch of prophecies pf varying accuracy, and even having each oracle have their own precision statistics, but here, too, the "how?" is never explained. The prophecies exist and some are accurate and some aren't, but if there are any rules to that - we'll never know. The author needed the laws and prophecies to exist to make the story "work" and that's the gist of it.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, I had high hopes for the book and I'm left disappointed and, even worse, angry. The execution was so lackluster that it was almost offensive - same goes for the writing style in general. The banter was occasionally fun, but it was always the same so it got old really quickly. The Lila thing almost made me throw the book out my window. I just cannot forgive that, no matter how hard the author made her characters tell me how it wasn't that bad. No. It was awful. The characters lacked depth and charme, much less creativity and originality.

So This Is Ever After didn't read like an actual, edited and reviewed, printed book. It read like the fanfics I wrote when I was twelve - and that is NOT a compliment.

Down Syndrome children were referred to as “mongols.” Some even speculated that the condition resulted from alcoholism or some form of impropriety on the parents’ part. It wasn’t until 30 years after Anne de Gaulle’s birth that another devout French Catholic, Professor Jerome Lejeune, and his research team discovered that Down Syndrome was caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21.

In the 1930s, it was common for French families to place disabled children permanently in hospitals that were woefully ill-equipped to care them. Charles and Yvonne de Gaulle, however, refused to send Anne to live with, as he would say, “strangers.” In de Gaulle’s words, “God has given her to us. We must take responsibility for her, wherever she is and whatever she will be.”

The de Gaulles worked hard to build a place for, to use de Gaulle’s expression, “a child who is not like the others” in their family. From all accounts, Yvonne de Gaulle adopted a matter-of-fact approach. She focused on the practicalities of caring for a disabled child. Charles de Gaulle’s contribution was to envelop Anne in a web of affection. According to his son, de Gaulle wanted to give Anne the assurance that he loved her just as much as her older brother and sister--that her disability meant nothing to him.

The tall army officer infamous for his air of haughty disdain as leader of Free France during World War II and later as French President didn’t hesitate to unbend to play on the floor with Anne. De Gaulle sang to Anne, told her stories, and even allowed her to play with one of his most treasured possessions: his officer’s kepi hat. De Gaulle also said prayers with Anne in the evening. Painstakingly, she would repeat each word after her father. “You see,” de Gaulle proudly informed his relatives, “she knows her prayers!”

When away on army business, de Gaulle constantly inquired about Anne’s well-being. On one occasion, Anne had an operation while he was absent on maneuvers. De Gaulle telephoned incessantly to ask if she was in pain, whether the procedure had succeeded, what the doctors were saying, etc. Anne seems to have been aware of just how much she meant to her father. Her first governess recalled that Anne adored him and would be visibly upset when his responsibilities took de Gaulle away from his family.

Though the de Gaulles valued their privacy, they didn’t view Anne as an embarrassment. There are pictures of her standing awkwardly with members of the de Gaulles’ extended family. Most striking, however, is a photo of Anne taken at a beach in Brittany in 1933. She is sitting on her father’s lap. He, dressed in a homburg hat and three-piece suit, gently holds her hands as the five year-old girl looks intensely into her father’s eyes. It’s an image of unconditional love.

While Anne lived, the de Gaulles took her everywhere with them. That included less-than-hospitable locations such as the French mandate in Syria and Lebanon. De Gaulle was posted there in 1929, partly because some of his superiors wanted to sideline an officer who asked awkward questions about France’s readiness for the next war. There was, however, no question of leaving Anne behind. Instead she went with them, with the de Gaulles hiring a full-time governess to help them care for Anne.

There was, of course, a cost to all this. Though Charles de Gaulle came from a minor aristocratic family and his wife from an upper-middle class background, the de Gaulles were not wealthy. His modest army pay was their main source of income. Hiring full-time help was subsequently an enormous financial liability, but one they didn’t hesitate to assume.

This brings into focus another factor of which Charles de Gaulle was undoubtedly aware: how the National Socialist regime treated the disabled. Eugenics was part and parcel of the Nazi view of the world (and most Western liberal opinion for decades). And, as the Nazis made clear right from the beginning, the disabled had no place in a National Socialist world. They were lebensunwertes leben (life unworthy of life).

Starting in September 1939, the Nazi government began removing Down Syndrome children and infants suffering from other disabilities from their parents. These children were taken to “health facilities” and killed by lethal injection or gas poisoning. In the name of “racial health” and other eugenics nonsense, the regime murdered thousands of disabled children. Among them was a 15 year-old Down Syndrome cousin of the future pope, Joseph Ratzinger.

This would have been Anne de Gaulle’s fate if she had ever fallen into Nazi hands. Although de Gaulle never referenced it specifically, it’s likely that the brutal treatment of the disabled was one of the things he had in mind when referring to the evil of the Nazi regime. When de Gaulle refused to surrender in 1940 and was branded a traitor by France’s political and military elites, it was certainly the act of an intensely patriotic man unwilling to accept his country’s abasement by the Nazis. But de Gaulle’s act of resistance also concerned safeguarding his defenseless daughter from those who viewed her as sub-human.

Like many Down Syndrome children, Anne de Gaulle died at an early age. Her brother Philippe recollects arriving at his parents’ house in 1948 to find the entire residence immersed in silence. No one, he writes, dared to say anything to his grief-stricken father. Anne was subsequently buried in the cemetery at the de Gaulles’ parish church in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises. Her mother joined them in 1979.

That, however, wasn’t the end of the story. Back in October 1945, the de Gaulles raised enough money from private donors to buy the chateau de Vert-Cœur in the department of Yvelines, not far from Paris. They then began creating a home for intellectually disabled girls. A few months after Anne’s death, the Fondation Anne-de-Gaulle opened its doors at the chateau. Staffed by nuns, funded by the considerable royalties generated by de Gaulle’s memoirs, and presided over by Yvonne de Gaulle until her death, the Foundation continues to serve the disabled today.

One of Charles de Gaulle’s biographers, the late Jean Lacouture, records him as once saying, “Without Anne, I could never perhaps have done what I did. The American Dental Association supports dental offices reopening — with added precautions — in states where COVID-19 cases are declining. It notes that patients are better off if they have their regular dental services. The dental group says many dental practices are being hit hard financially because most of their regular patients aren’t coming in for routine care.

But many health experts question whether states are moving too fast.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to advise patients to limit dental visits to emergencies. The CDC said it has no data yet about the possibility of coronavirus “transmission during dental practice or to determine whether [dental health care providers] are adequately protected when providing dental treatment using standard precautions.”

Matt Crespin, president of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and a Milwaukee hygienist, also said it’s not time yet. His association believes dentists should postpone all elective and nonemergency care until dental offices have enough equipment such as masks to safeguard all employees and there is more testing to gauge the spread of the disease.

“We have some hygienists who are ready to go back to work and follow the guidance to keep themselves safe and their patients safe,” Crespin said. “But we are hearing from other hygienists worried about going back because appropriate protections are not being put in place” and offices have limited supplies of protective gear.

Infection control experts said patients, dentists and their staffs need to weigh their risks — which vary by where they live, their age and other factors.

“Just because you can be going back to the dentist doesn’t mean you should automatically go,” said Pia MacDonald, an infectious disease expert with RTI International, a nonprofit research institute in North Carolina. She said patients should talk to their dentists about what precautions they are putting in place.

For dental practices, like many other small businesses, the shutdown has been financially devastating. An ADA survey of 17,000 dentists found that by early April more than 9 of 10 dentists said their patient volume was 10% or less of normal, and just under half had stopped paying their employees. Nearly 20% of dentists said they had concerns about sustaining their dental practice if current restrictions are kept in place until the end of June, according to the survey.

“We are going to see more dentists file for bankruptcy if the restrictions go into June,” said Margaret Gingrich, president of the Michigan Dental Association. Like many dentists, Gingrich received a Small Business Administration loan to help her pay rent, utilities and payroll.

Even when dentists get clearance to resume regular visits, it’s uncertain how many patients will postpone out of fear of coronavirus infection. An April survey by the North American Dental Group, which operates 230 dental offices nationwide, found 71% of respondents were uncomfortable going to the dentist for a “non-time sensitive” dental procedure.

“I don’t feel comfortable being in the chair with my mouth open for an extended period of time,” said Marian Hollingsworth, 66, of San Diego.

Adding to their financial woes, many dentists plan to see fewer patients per day to reduce the number of people in their waiting rooms and give staff more time to disinfect areas between cases.

Matthew Roberts, a dentist in Crockett, Texas, who reopened his practice to routine patients last week, said dentists are accustomed to handling germs that can cause infections.

“While we are not used to this novel virus, we deal with infections all the time,” he said. “Patients should have no qualms” about returning.

In addition to wearing N95 masks and gowns, he and his hygienists now use face shields.

When patients arrive at his office, staff members take their temperature to make sure they don’t have a fever, which could signal a COVID infection, and screen them by asking questions about their health.

Roberts said he has been pleasantly surprised that many of his patients have chosen to book appointments once he reopened. He attributed that to his rural county having few COVID cases and patients wanting a return to normal. After being closed for six weeks, Roberts said, he has a backlog of 300 appointments to get through. He’s scheduling patients into September.

Matthew Messina, a spokesperson for the ADA and a dentist in Columbus, Ohio, said that, with added precautions such as having patients wait in their cars instead of small waiting rooms and dentists wearing face shields, people should feel comfortable about going to the dentist even if they are elderly and at high risk for COVID complications.

“The dental office is a safe place for patients,” he said.

MacDonald, the infectious disease expert, recommended, however, that older people consult with their medical doctor about whether a routine dental visit is worth the risk.

“Dentists are uniquely positioned to handle this,” said Thomas Paumier, a Canton, Ohio, dentist who reopened last week. With a shortage of N95 masks, he said, he is using high-quality surgical masks and a face shield.

“Ever since the HIV experience in the 1980s, we treat every patient who walks in the door as potentially infectious,” Paumier said.

Like many other dentists, he donated masks and gloves to area hospitals. But recently, his were returned because they were not needed.

Still, other dentists are concerned about getting adequate supplies. Michael Hoffmann, a dentist and treasurer for the Greater St. Louis Dental Society, said many practices there are “not opening to full capacity — because there’s not enough personal protective equipment.”

He said his own practice has about a month’s worth of supplies. “Once we run out, we’ll have to close our doors until we can get more,” he said.

The society recently used a salesperson Hoffmann had previously worked with to order 100,000 KN95 masks — the European version of N95s — from a supplier in China. But the masks arrived in boxes stamped “nonmedical.”

“When we were trying to fit-check them, they leaked horribly,” Hoffmann said. “Nobody was able to get any kind of seal, and we knew they were fraudulent.”

The group received its money back, and Hoffmann said they will refund the dentists that preordered.

“Dentists are uniquely positioned to handle this,” said Thomas Paumier, a Canton, Ohio, dentist who reopened last week. With a shortage of N95 masks, he said, he is using high-quality surgical masks and a face shield.

“Ever since the HIV experience in the 1980s, we treat every patient who walks in the door as potentially infectious,” Paumier said.

Like many other dentists, he donated masks and gloves to area hospitals. But recently, his were returned because they were not needed.

Still, other dentists are concerned about getting adequate supplies. Michael Hoffmann, a dentist and treasurer for the Greater St. Louis Dental Society, said many practices there are “not opening to full capacity — because there’s not enough personal protective equipment.”

He said his own practice has about a month’s worth of supplies. “Once we run out, we’ll have to close our doors until we can get more,” he said.

The society recently used a salesperson Hoffmann had previously worked with to order 100,000 KN95 masks — the European version of N95s — from a supplier in China. But the masks arrived in boxes stamped “nonmedical.”

“When we were trying to fit-check them, they leaked horribly,” Hoffmann said. “Nobody was able to get any kind of seal, and we knew they were fraudulent.”

The group received its money back, and Hoffmann said they will refund the dentists that preordered.
