💰Coin Divination 2.0💰
I keep coming back to coin divination because I really like it's simplicity. It's a form of divination that's quite portable and effecient. I've been playing with it more to turn it into more of a fully fleshed out divination system, something that could speak to a wider array of topics. Previous posts I've written have talked about how to use it while fully contextualized by a question or series of questions but I wanted it to be capable of being used for general readings or in place of cards in spreads.
In the process, I wrote up a post that makes me sound a bit like the red string guy but I offer it here in case it makes sense to someone who isn't me, someone who can make use of it in their personal practice.
I've gotten several questions over the years from people living in conservative or fundamentalist Christian homes about how to learn divination and I think nothing beats coin divination. Coins are everywhere and no one would really think it's that weird if you have one in your pocket. Artisan coins are becoming a popular EDC item to carry. It's something easy to take with you if you have to leave or find once you get somewhere.
Yes playing card divination is another one of my favorites, but I know some homes are so strict in their rejection of gambling that they ban cards altogether and all the meanings can be tricky to memorize. With this version of coin divination I hoped to create something where the basic meanings could fit on an index card that could be hidden behind a phone or somewhere else fairly safe.
I didn't mix geomantic figures with this system as they didn't fit well with the other moving parts. I think the focus for geomancy is on the figures created rather than the meanings of the coin results itself. Given this it is possible to have two forms of divination - something I recommend every magically operant person know - in a single coin. One could use this coin divination system and geomancy separately (perhaps with a geomancy cheat sheet on the back of the index card.) Magical minimalism meets mass accessibility.
Basically, I think this has real potential, especially for folks who need to travel light or who are living in repressive circumstances.
The Subject Compass
A compass or 8 point figure seems like an obvious choice to divine on but as I looked for one that was rooted in western esoteric traditions, I struggled to find one that was semi-consistent and had areas that were helpful for divination. So I came up with a model loosely inspired by the 4 orienting points of an astrological chart - ASC, IC, DC, MC and combinations of meanings there of.
W - ASC - Self + Health
SW - Family + Resources + Spirituality
S - IC - Internal + Root/Past + Home
SE - Sex + Children + Pets
E - DC - Other + Partnerships
NE - Education + Community + Coworkers
N -MC - External + Aspirations + Journeys
NW - Reputation + Work
To decide the direction, establish some part of the coin as the point. For coins with human or animal faces, this can be the direction the eyes point. For other coins it could simply be the generally agreed upon top of the coin. If a face has none, it may be necessary to file a notch into the coin or mark it in some way permanently. Whichever direction the point most faces, that's the subject being discussed.
Using heads for positive/active and tails for negative/passive and the meanings of these areas, combinations cam point to specific areas. For instance a heads in the East could mean a new or generally positive relationship or friendship. A tails in the S could indicate a new challenge or difficulty at home. This can then steer the question phase or further clarify confusing answers received during it.
Yes/No Questions
The format I use to answer questions is to flip a coin 4 times and use the following results to determine an answer:
4 Heads - 0 Tails - Strong Yes
3 Heads - 1 Tails - Weak Yes
2 Heads - 2 Tails - Neutral/Ask Later
1 Heads - 3 Tails - Weak No
0 Heads - 4 Tails - Strong No
I think this format in particular is great for spirit work since it necessitates something conversational and quick. Cards can actually be a bit of a drag in these situations where quick to the point answers are needed. You can keep it to just this or you can layer in other meanings as you need for your purposes.
The main thing I'm adding here is this: extrapolating from aspects of geomancy, one could also read into the order in which you got your heads and tails for more meaning and specificity. Taking heads as generally positive/active and tails as generally negative/passive, you can see where a given result might be most relevant. This could also be used to further clarify a subject before asking questions.
First Position - Head - Fire/Plasma - Spiritual
Second Position - Neck/Chest/Arms - Air/Gas - Mental
Third Position - Core/Organs/Groin - Water/Fluid - Emotional
Fourth Position - Legs/Feet - Earth/Solid - Physical
Difference in Points
This is probably my most red string of all the meanings. Basically, when you start given reading you decide what point of the compass your reading most aligns to. We'll call this the heading. Then as you flip the coin, you count the difference between the heading and where the point landed for that toss to get a number. At the end, you add these numbers up to get a numerology number that can also be interpreted using those principles. I honestly find combing through the vast majority of numerology information on the internet a real drag so I just use the numbers from Tarot loosely as my basis:
Beginnings, seeds, new, solitary - start something new, reflect in isolation for a while
Balance, partnership, preparation - make needed preparations, balance or rebalance
Creation, community, education - create something new, learn from your community
Stability, stagnation, temporary - this too shall pass, loosen your grip, give back
Turning point, challenges, woe - be transformed, remember what is truly important
Follow through, past, go, do - take right action, right your prior wrongs, be fair and just
Pause, illusion, tend - wait it out, there's a lie or delusion in the mix, water the garden
Crossroads, journey, binds - Free yourself and journey onwards, make a decision and commit
Luck, manifestation, completion - put a bow on it, cause and effect, mourn it's end
General Reading
With these added layers of meaning, it opens up the possibility for a general reading. One could flip a coin 4 times and note the result and the direction of the point without any question at all. For example:
Heading - W
H - NE - 5
H - S - 2
T - S - 2
H - N - 6
5 + 2 + 2 + 6 = 15 = 1 + 5 = 6
Weak Positive - There's a balance of the external and the internal, there's a doubling of the south so home might be the main focus, maybe there's a weakly positive opportunity to learn at or about your home in a way the furthers your current aspirations in life, the only tail showed up in the third position so maybe what you're learning is has to do with a water problem in your home - either actual water/plumbing or GI related health issues or an emotional issue. Given that the education result is also in the fire or spiritual position, perhaps the subject is spiritually significant or is something you discussed or agreed on with a spirit. With 6 as the number for the reading, this would indicate a need to get started on this education right away.
Other Spreads
You could use this method on spreads designed for other divination systems. It certainly won't work as well as the systems they were originally designed for but it is still workable. 4 tosses per spot would be the most complete but it's also almost too much information to fit in the context of the spread.
I recommend 2 tosses per spot. With some tweaking you can condense some of the meanings I pointed to in the general reading. The first toss would be read on the subject compass. But the second would need to be read on a second compass to add back in the elemental and body readings. You can use the directions that make the most sense to you or use these:
Second Coin Compass
W - Water
S - Fire
E - Earth
N - Air
You could read into the mixed points (SW, SE, etc) if you wanted to add a layer of meaning, or you can just pick the main compass point it is closes to to keep it simple.
Example
Let's look at a simple Past - Present - Future - Advice spread.
Past - Heading: S - [T - NW] [H - E) - 5 + 2 = [7]
Neutral; Reputation + Work, Earth - Physical, Legs/Feet; Pause - Taking a break from work, putting your feet up
Present - Heading: W - [H - S] [H - W] - 2 + 8 = 10 = 1 + 0 = [1]
Positive; Home + Root, Water; New - A renewed connection with someone from the past
Future - Heading: N - [H - S] [T - NE] - 4 + 7 = 11 = 1+1 = [2]
Neutral; Home + Root, Air/Earth - Erosion; Partnership - This connection is likely to erode again for a while
Advice - Heading: NE - [T - SW] [T - W] - 4 + 3 = [7]
Negative; Family + Resources, Water; Wait - Refocus your efforts on your family, don't make any sudden decisions
Summary of the Reading
Overall Number - 7 + 1 + 2 + 7 = 17 = 1 + 7 = 8 - Crossroads, Journey, Binds
Querant's focus was on work but in learning to relax, they've reestablished a connection with someone from their past, perhaps from their hometown. They shouldn't necessarily dive right into it as it's likely to erode. They should protect their resources and not lose sight of their family. Wouldn't lend this new person any money. This friendship might force them to finally make a decision they've been putting off or put them in a bind of some kind.
Conclusion
I'm honestly worried this stuff won't make sense to anyone but me. Fingers crossed this is exactly what someone is looking for and now they don't have to put in the work or at least they've got a basis to build on.

Howler Logs - #13, Little Solace 💠💖
<== Previous -- Next ==>
Full Travel Log Catalogue Here!
The Shroud had been a lot of things in Howler's life. A source of fear and comfort in equal measures, the cause of pleasant dreams filled with scent of spring flowers and willow, as well as the nightmares of twisting roots, howling winds and wrath so ancient it was near incomprehensible for one so young.
It had given shelter to their family, and then ripped that very same shelter away. It had been a place of many failures and betrayals, and yet given a place to mourn and hide and lick one’s wounds.
There were so many stories from their family. Of the dark fallen lancer born of the mist, betrayed by too many while searching true courage. Of the traitorous Wailer, whose second chance stained the ground beneath with blood of the countless bright souls. Of a young man with bronze skin and golden hair, with heart yearning for justice for his home - only to be left to rot in a shallow pool, betrayed by his comrades. Of the Lalafell who gave his life to save countless, when the Wall was still standing. When the Alliance was still standing.
The Shroud was many things, and Howler, whenever they visited, always had mixed feelings about the whole place. In their times, it was dangerous. In these times… well, it was dangerous still - the forest hid many dangers, and the trees were alive, watching.
But at least Howler could breathe without death in their path and lungs.
So, the Elezen decided to confront some of their newly found discomfort, and moved through East Thanaland’s savannahs, through the South Shroud’s swamps - into the forests, past the landmarks both foreign and haunted by memories, of a future not yet lived.
They kept their eyes closed here and there, focusing on breathing - it was just trees. Their grandparents' domain. Grandparents and one specific uncle; Beans had been a White Mage once upon a time. Something Howler was all too keenly aware of, as his Soul Crystal of a White Mage had been passed on to them oh so long ago - even if Howler wasn’t the magical prodigy like one of their fathers.
Perhaps that was why the forest felt so foreboding. They could sense things they couldn’t before. That had been something that had been mentioned by Dar-
“Walking one! Traveling one! This one needs a word!”
Howler stopped their walking with a startle - opening their eyes, realizing for the first time they had walked rather deep into the forest. Some of the darker and deeper parts, from the looks of it - deep enough to start have started running into-
“Helloooo? Is traveling one alright?”
Sylph. They had run into an honest to goodness sylph. Howler blinked a few times, before a tiny laugh escaped from them. Right, Sylphs were among the nicer ones - especially the green ones. Gods, they had never seen one before, aside from a picture book!
“Oh, I- I’m okay. I think. I'm a little nervous to be in the forest, I’m still getting used to everything being so… alive,” Howler coughed softly, before focusing back on the task with a shake of a head. “You said you had something to tell me?”
The Sylphs little… ears? Leaves? Twitched happily, before they reached down to hold Howler's hand - and pulled the Elezen along. “The time one asked this one to look for a walking one with a metal hand! Time one said it is important traveling one has a chance to rest and become friends with these ones!”
Time one? Howler blinked a little, but then… started to follow the Sylph, allowing them to drag the taller one along. “Time one?”
There was a happy hum in response. “Time one is scary, but important. Does an important job, the woods say. So if she asks for help, these ones will help. Looking after a silly traveling one is easy enough!”
“My name’s Howler,” Howler noted, chuckling a little. “But I guess traveling one is accurate enough.”
“Traveling through time. Through lands. Though memories that will never be, or so says the Time one. Traveling one travels, so traveling one he is!”
Howler let out a soft humm - they had no memory of a ‘Time one’, aside from one… and he was dead. A mystery for later, then.
“Come! Come! This one would introduce traveling one to these ones! Traveling one looks like she needs a good laugh and a night of fun-makings!”
Well. That wasn’t exactly inaccurate-
Following the fluttering beast-tribe member, Howler let out a small sigh - watching Pipsqueak from the corner of their eye. The bat had better not wander too far off, they were both still recovering from the cold rains - or so Howler at least thought, before realizing they were surrounded.
They had been surrounded… by extremely curious Sylphs.
“Uhm… hello?” Howler greeted, slightly hesitant at first… before getting swarmed.
“Look at this! Traveling one’s hand really is metal! But not icky!” “The aether of the traveling one... It fluctuates! Adapts!” “This one welcomes traveling one Howler to the forests! Welcome!” “Does traveling one need anything? These ones do not eat the same things, but perhaps the walking ones of Little Solace have something-”
So many voices, laughs, hands, fluttering of wings. It was contagious, and soon enough, despite the confusion…
Howler found themselves laughing along.

i am taking you up on your invitation to ask about the incarnadines!
:3c
right so first thing, a little historical background is needed to explain how and why the incarnadine family ended up in the position that they did: the current period began about three hundred and fifty years ago with the expansion of what was then called the valende republic through the mountains into a region of northeast sanus called the marquetry, which was overwhelmingly populated by a mainly sea-faring people called the alenbo. (ozma was an alenboic sailor at the time.)
(sidebar: due to the tides there’s a strong tendency for sea-faring groups to be fairly small while also developing a technological edge over their land-bound neighbors, because of the extreme difficulties that subsisting on the ocean entails; it’s similar in practice to the real historical tendency for pastoral nomads to be pushed onto marginal land by sedentary agrarian competitors, except with the complicating factor that the sea peoples have a subsistence base that requires them to be really skilled with dust. for the alenboics specifically, think "mongolian horse archers, but with boats and dust-based weather magic")
the marquetry wasn’t conquered per se so much as valende went "this is now a valendian province and if you disagree no you don’t :)"—because valende was massive and had the requisite numbers and military excellence to annex smaller neighbors "diplomatically"—but a significant number of alenboics went "fuck you" and sailed north to found tumak on the west coast of solitas. over the course of the next two centuries the tumakian gradually spread inland to what is now mantle and the coastal settlements were eventually abandoned as the dust deposits they relied upon were depleted.
MEANWHILE, the northwest end of sanus—the vitrine peninsula—is home to a mix of nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples collectively called (in vytali) the glass folk. the lowland parts of the region are boggy and absolutely crawling with grimm; it is nearly impossible to travel straight north from the heart of vale in the maragda valley to the vitrine peninsula.
(that is why it took cinder three days to travel from hellebore’s crossing to vale city: she hopped a ferry north to where VIGL—the vytal intergovernmental league—is headquartered on the isle of vytal, took another ferry east and then a coach cross-country to couloir, on the northeast coast, and then the overnight express southwest through the mountains to vale. because to take a more direct route you’d have to cross about five hundred kilometers of grimm territory.)
so for valende, half the point of annexing the marquetry was to use it as a staging ground to finally conquer the vitrine peninsula—long, long history of enmity between the people of the maragda valley and the glass folk, who historically have dealt with grimm in part by adopting a style of warfare that can be best described as "get the grimm to fight for you by terrorizing the fuck out of your enemies." anyway, the glass folk were none too pleased about this, but once the republic had a corridor into the vitrine peninsula from the east it became sort of a forever-war situation; valende’s armies could penetrate into the region, capture some territory, start to build forts, and then the glass folk would rile up the grimm to drive them back again. rinse and repeat for a couple centuries.
around 240 VE (~115 years ago), tumak and other coastal settlements in western solitas are formally abandoned for mantle. about a decade and a half after this is where the incarnadines come into the picture, with frida incarnadine. she’s from one of the glass folk groups and shrewd enough to recognize that this perpetual stalemate with valende is just not going to end if nothing changes. meanwhile alenboics still living in the marquetry are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with valendian rule and mantle is, with mistrali backing, beginning to test the waters by making ominous noises about liberating that region—after all, mantle is an alenboic state.
(on top of all this, there are also the canonical pressures that contributed to the outbreak of the great war: imperial mistral stakes a claim on and occupies a region of eastern vale further south, slave trade between mantle and mistral is booming, oz—as osiander—inherits the throne of what is now a republic-in-name-only after centuries of an elective monarchy being slowly corrupted into a hereditary one, and does what he can to clean up the mess whilst preventing the simmering international tensions from boiling over.)
in every other respect besides her displeasure with the ongoing stalemate of valende’s effort to annex the vitrine peninsula, frida is in political alignment with osiander but it’s anathema among the glass folk to even consider siding with the republic on anything while there is still an active valendian campaign into their homeland. and there aren’t an abundance of other options, besides throwing in with the marquetry alenboics and soliciting aid from mantle. so frida does that. around 259 VE, she persuades the mantelian chancellor to formally recognize ‘the vitrine federation’ as a sovereign state. both ratify a mutual defense treaty.
osiander is desperate to avoid a war with mantle, so he withdraws valendian troops from the contested territory in the west and makes an attempt to establish diplomatic ties with the new federation which are, for obvious reasons, very coldly received. in any case the upshot of all this is that frida winds up being a key player in the marquetry conflict a few years later, when the alenboic population declares independence, because that mutual defense pact she orchestrated included language obliging the vitrine federation to support the liberation of the marquetry from valendian occupation, and that was not a hard sell for any of the glass folk.
the marquetry conflict isn’t what sparked the great war—that happened a few years later when fighting broke out between mistrali colonists and valendian forces in the southern provinces, which rapidly snowballed—but it did presage a wider conflict and nobody involved wanted it to escalate, particularly. during this period frida is one of the most determined voices on the mantelian side advocating for a diplomatic approach and lives in mantle full time.
historians generally credit her as the main reason the marquetry conflict didn’t erupt into open warfare despite extremely high tensions in the region and occasional skirmishes. it was a bit less than a decade of cold war for independence before rioting in the southern provinces struck a match, and…
…a contributing factor as to why those riots ignited such a horrific war is they coincided with frida incarnadine and the mantelian chancellor, ijsbrand, having a falling out over what came to be known as the Interdiction—draconian censorship laws forced through on the pretext that it would keep the people safe from grimm. frida objected quite strenuously until ijsbrand froze her out of his circle of advisors, whereupon she resigned from her post as the federation’s ambassador and became an outspoken critic of the regime. which was, obviously, illegal.
so she gets arrested and (like many of ijsbrand’s political enemies) flown out to the coldfire waste—around the north pole—and dumped there to die. unlike most of ijsbrand’s political enemies, frida is a master konurge and also completely fucking unafraid of the grimm on account of where she came from, so instead of dying she makes the long trek back to mantle specifically to go "i lived, bitch" and then make him regret making an enemy of her.
consequently once the great war began, the vitrine federation sided with valende (and ended up getting carpet-bombed almost to oblivion for its trouble. most of the territory “lost to the grimm” during the war was in fact lost to Being Bombed, with grimm hordes moving in after. this is a distinction the glass folk in particular tend to be very precise about). frida herself spent most of the duration of the great war in mantle, underground, organizing popular resistance to the ijsbrand regime.
after the war, the vytal accords obliged ijsbrand’s government to pay very substantial reparations not only to what was now called the republic of vale but also to certain key figures in the mantelian resistance who had been individually targeted for persecution, which made frida incarnadine very rich, and then frida went "…the accords abolished slavery without making explicit provisions for what is to happen to all the slaves, and i received more money than any one person needs" and established the incarnadine foundation to solve both problems.
initially the incarnadine foundation, headquartered in mantle, functions as connective tissue binding together a coalition of political groups and charities united by the project of uplifting emancipated people; the foundation itself provides legal aid to formerly enslaved persons pro bono, but frida’s reparation money and existing web of political connections lead to the foundation also becoming sort of the central organizing hub because she knows everybody.
frida never marries but she does adopt a daughter, amanta, a couple years after the war ends. amanta incarnadine is reclusive and intellectual—her biggest political achievement is setting up a research grant through the foundation after frida passes away, and flatly resisting the migration of wealth from mantle to what was then the upperclass suburb of atlas.
what amanta incarnadine is really known for though are two things:
publishing a seminal paper on the koniolytic reaction, the interaction between aura and dust that makes the magic happen, that more or less created the modern scientific field of catathymic mechanics*, and
killing herself by jumping off the coastal cliffs less than a year later.
(*this is like the esoteric equivalent of quantum physics in a world where alchemical theories turned out to be scientifically sound and the human soul is a tangible material reality)
her reasons for doing so were and still are unclear; prior to her death, she was notoriously aloof and kept very few friends, none close. her then-fifteen-year-old daughter inherits everything, fights for and wins emancipation rather than become a ward of the mantelian state, and proves to have both amanta’s intellect and frida’s general disposition.
she enrolls in ambergris college in mantle at sixteen to study dust, graduates with high honors just three years later, divides her time between hellebore’s crossing (where she rehabilitates the long-vacant family winter house) and continuing her post-grad studies in mantle (where she builds upon amanta’s research and theories to help pioneer the emerging discipline of catathymic mechanics + keeps up with the foundation’s work as it begins to expand to encompass advocacy against practices like indentured servitude).
all of this happens in the late 20s/early 30s. (amanta dies in 326; sable finishes her undergrad at ambergris in 329 and completes her masters in 332.) around the same time, the situation in mountain glenn is becoming untenable with the retreat into the under-city occurring in 331.
sable’s research concerns subatomic auraleric interactions between dust and (controversially) grimm, but her interest in grimm is stymied by international civilian restrictions; no one is allowed to travel into ‘bleak zones’—uninhabitable grimm territory—without a license. most grimm researchers handle this by hiring huntsmen to act as a security detail. sable handled it by living on the fringes of grimm territory in hellebore’s crossing for close on a decade and then passing the atlas academy licensing exam.
(no one ever, ever remembers that sable incarnadine is a licensed huntress. she does the absolute bare minimum necessary to prevent her license expiring—which means taking a contract about once per quarter—and strictly takes the sort of backwoods minimum fee gig most professional huntsmen avoid, because when she is in the public eye she wants the spotlight to be on her research.)
she gets her license the same year the mountain glenn under-city is overrun, 334.
(that incident is also how ozpin, then thirty-two, winds up headmaster of beacon academy without ever having been a professor: when the valean council gives the order to seal off the tunnels rather than risk an evacuation that might bring grimm into the valley en masse, ozpin puts out a call and steals a couple bullheads along with a handful of other huntsmen, to save whoever they can reach. most of the survivors—there are only about a hundred altogether—were rescued and flown out by ozpin et al.
sacrificing mountain glenn is politically disastrous for the valean council as the official narrative of pragmatic necessity immediately gets derailed by "the heroes of mountain glenn risked their lives and licenses to save dozens, more could have been saved if the council had tried," so the council appoints ozpin to the headmaster’s office as a last-ditch effort to salvage public opinion before being, predictably, slaughtered at the polls.)
less than half a year later sable delves into the ruins solo, over the protestations of, like. everybody. to study the grimm there; all the relay towers are down so she’s out of contact the whole time and blows past her planned return date by long enough that she’s missing, presumed dead by the time she emerges unscathed with a fuckton of data that she synthesizes into a paper entitled on the eusocial structure of grimm hordes: conclusions drawn from a survey of mountain glenn. her conclusions are WILDLY CONTROVERSIAL (she suggests that grimm communicate with each other via konurgic signaling and that hordes display complex organization similar to that of bees or ants) but mostly borne out by subsequent studies.
for the next decade or so she churns out research like she’ll die if she stops, and when she isn’t doing that she’s in mantle making common cause with the fauni there—during frida’s time, the incarnadine foundation and its allies were very successful in seizing the opportunity and post-war mantle became a bastion for fauni civil rights, but by sable’s time the migration of (human) wealth from mantle to atlas gives rise to the alsius meritocratic party (AMP) and the reactionary backlash is in full swing.
ozpin isn’t initially involved in the plan to raise atlas—that’s an AMP scheme—but when he hears about it he goes 😬 because he’s thinking ahead to maybe a couple centuries down the line when the city runs out of dust. he and ironwood (who is at this point atlas’ headmaster but otherwise politically irrelevant) are old school friends and ironwood has some limited understanding of the divine mandate due to having been around when ozma reincarnated into his teammate. neither of them has anything like the political power necessary to put a stop to the ascension project so the priority is damage control: either the city flies on a massive but finite load of gravity dust, or… the two of them position themselves close enough to the project to sneak the staff of creation into the works with no one the wiser.
to that end they both become publicly enthusiastic about the project until the AMP-controlled atlas council starts to bring ironwood into the loop. meanwhile sable, who a) is more urgently concerned with the immediate socioeconomic and political ramifications of raising atlas than the logistical problems of the distant future, and b) only knows what the general public knows, emerges as one of the project’s sharpest critics.
(she starts writing scathing editorials about ironwood and ozpin around this time and then just. never stops. ironwood thinks sable incarnadine was put on remnant to be his personal nemesis. ozpin has never met her but feels that arguing with her via dueling opinion pieces constitutes a friendly rivalry.)
picking fights with the powers that be in atlas and then (when the fauni insurgency in mistral begins about a year later) vigorously voicing support for the rebels is what elevates her from "notable grimm expert" to "notorious crackpot" because the average person on remnant is only familiar with her work through several distorting filters of interpretation and summary, although she is very highly respected within her field. controversial but meticulous about her conclusions is her general reputation among other experts.
the politics did get her blackballed by a lot of academic institutions in atlas but her answer to that was to look over at the fauni who’d just won a war and established a state on menagerie and go "can me and my posse of brilliant scientists set up our own research institute down there," to which the new qilinese government replied "please do" and that’s the PRISM Institute.
<- all that was a decade ago, with the fauni revolution ending in 347. in the interim she kind of slowed down on the pace of her research on account of adopting a child and writing a handful of books for laypeople, most of them nonfiction but also one incandescently strange historical fiction novel. she summers in mantle, winters in hellebore’s crossing, and sometimes lives in qilin for months at a time when her research can’t be done in the field.
(the incarnadines aren’t wealthy by any measure now—frida poured most of the reparation money into the foundation and amanta transferred her remaining investments to fund the research grant. sable makes a living off of being one of the few people in the world who can make really high-content konurgic alloys without blowing herself up—these can’t be machine-manufactured because molten dust is too volatile, but they’re extremely valuable, like "every CCTS tower was built with several tonnes of hand-made wire" valuable, so the master-konurges capable of creating them make bank. sable does like 3-4 spools a year and smaller ad hoc commissions and never worries about money.)
the reason tdt cinder is… the way she is is sable’s social circle consists almost entirely of 1. other scientists who are leading experts in their fields, 2. firebrand mantelian activists, and 3. eccentric denizens of hellebore’s crossing, many of whom herd domesticated deer through grimm territory for a living. we’re only on the top of the iceberg right now but the CHASM between what cinder thinks is common knowledge and what’s actually common knowledge is extremely funny
#ozpin just about lost his mind when this woman’s daughter applied to his school#his DREAM is getting sable to give like a guest lecture on grimm management at beacon bc that’s her specific area of#practical expertise – preventative measures to mitigate the risk that grimm will swarm. he’s very excited abt her research#on top of being terrified salem is going to murder her for it bfrgsfk#but she never returns his calls#time does this

'but soft, what light through yonder window breaks? it is the east, and juliet is the sun.'
words upon a bloodied page; centuries old parchment torn around the edges by shattered glass against a crimson soaked rug. screams in the distance, a fox calling into the veil between night and day. crystalline shards scatter the entranceway of the old english home, the chosen dwelling of a vampire who'd chosen to bask in the light of humanity. the home is grand by average standards and yet nothing of what would be expected of it's owners' status. it's warm, colored ascents and trinkets of his homeland sprinkled throughout it's corners. a woman's coat knocked off a rack lays upon the ground, muddied footprints stomped into it. the scent of fresh death is thick, swirling in the too silent air. splintered wood lays further inside, a bannister broken. the wall is busted inward as if someone had been thrown into it with unnatural force. crimson rivers leak, seeping, dripping across shelves and artifacts and a singular child's toy at the intersection of the foyer.
the wind from the open door catches, swirls through the ghostly halls. it moves passed the body of a woman upon the ground, her hand laid over the child's toy and her neck ripped out with a feral sort of vengeance. her scent mixes with another, a few meters further. a man bloodied, battered, dead. another upon the turn. and one more, another man, each destroyed as if their right to exist, even in death, had been revoked by one or all of the gods. the breeze proceeds upon it's odyssey, swirling and shifting, scents mingling as it travels toward the shattered window in the furthest room-- it's escape of the this horrorscape. the sound of pages pierce the early hours, a ghost in a tomb which once was a home. pages move, blood drops winkling the pages of a book among dozens scattered across the room.
'a glooming peace this morning with it brings; the sun, for sorrow, will not show his head: go hence, to have more talk of these sad things; some shall be pardon'd, and some punished: for never was a story of more woe than this of juliet and her romeo.'
mehmed's body lays upon the ground, half covering books and broken glass, his ancient body appearing such for the first time as it desiccated, and yet in the stillness he almost appeared asleep if naught for the blood. there was so much blood. dry and wet, covering her in too many places, tears upon her clothes from a struggle and crimson smeared across her face where ariadne had allowed her newly formed fangs to tear into flesh. there was a dull pain in her jaw she was beginning to feel, the dark frenzy of violence and shock melding into the brief flickers of awareness in the red streaks beginning to from across an increasingly turbulent sky, shrouding the brightness of sun in shadows.
a toddler cries out from a closet with a stark suddenness, their mother having little memory of the voices she had risen to, moving toward the child to take her, only the blind rage she had felt. the pain. the turmoil. the primal need of a mother, and of a lover as mehmed's lifeless eyes looked upon her. she doesn't remember the struggle, or the footfalls, or the crashes. she doesn't remember tearing into the flesh of the first threat as the others scattered. she doesn't remember grabbing alara and putting her into the closet, ariadne's own blood and the man's smearing across the child's onesie. she doesn't remember hunting the others down through the house. she doesn't remember returning. she doesn't remember holding mehmed or her refusal to open the closet door out of fear. fear of what she was. fear of the memory of her own mother who had been so close to harming her own daughter-- the madness that had over taken her. (but ariadne was stronger than her mother, she always had been. and such had been the saving grace, if there could be one of the night.)
she doesn't remember, until the approaching footfalls break the hold her shock has over her and she remembers everything all at once. blood. there was so much blood. she could feel it, smell it, crave it, fear it. her face, she can feel the pain in her gums. she can feel the veins in her face. she can sense everything, too much. she needs to go to her daughter. can she? his body's at her knees.. mehmed... mehmed... the crunch of glass. osman. osman killed a member of their order. they'd said that. mehmed had talked about it. worried it'd shift the tides-- bring too much exposure. it wouldn't matter if how many resources they had as one of the great families... she remembers now. she remembers.
"you did this!" she moves in a blur, both hitting the wall and knocking what little remained to the ground. alara cries again because of the sound and ariadne's grip tightens but she doesn't attack as if she's warring with herself and yet such a battle proves she already maintains more control than what should be expected. even if it's precarious. her grip loosens, turns into shoving, into hitting his chest until she's falling under the weight of everything that's too much. she can see the bodies, the killers, the murderers in the corridor.
would they have come one day, either way?
"he's gone. he's dead. they murdered him. and... i killed them."
ariadne emits a guttural cry.

A little about my "Rooks":
Rosahni de Riva is the daughter of my Warden from Dragon Age: Origins and Zevran Arainai. Rosahni spent her childhood in Ferelden, growing up alongside Grey Wardens, but then moved to Antiva under the direction of the mother and father, where she was taken in by house de Riva. From there, she was trained to be a Crow, just like her father. Now, she leads, what is known as, "The Veilguard". Rosahni is an Elf with both city and Dalish origins, thanks to her parents' mixed heritage. She specializes in a tanky, warrior form of combat, which is abnormal for a Crow, but has proved to be an asset against the Antaam. However, there has always been something off about Rosahni and it is not until when Emmerich joins the Veilguard it becomes clear that there's an aura of necrotic energy that flows through her, left over from fighting for her life against the Blight within her mother's womb. Rosahni romances Lucanis. It is clear to everyone but Lucanis that she falls in love with him fast and hard. It takes a while for Lucanis to come around, but, when he does, he reciprocates with the same Antivan passion.
Katari Mercar is the daughter of a human and a Qunari. She is unsure of where she was born, but she knows that she was taken from her mother and brought to Par Vollen by her father. She grew up among her half-siblings and spent her childhood training to be a dutiful soldier, to which she spent her young adulthood in the military under the Qun. Then, Katari was struck by lightning. Where, under normal circumstances, she would have simply survived with some scarring, Katari was granted the power to harness electricity. Terrified that, under the Qun, she would be bound against her will for being a mage, Katari fled Par Vollen and arrived on the shores of mainland Thedas, eventually settling in Minrathous. Seeing all of the injustice in Tevinter, Katari knew that she could do something to help the innocent. She learned of the Shadow Dragons and joined their faction, figuring it was a good way to put her military skills to good use. Katari is a Qunari mage who specializes in infusing her lightning magic into her melee attacks. Her time with the Shadow Dragons has helped her harness both her melee combat and her arcane abilities to her full potential. Katari romances Neve. They form a fast friendship, but it becomes a bit rocky when Neve leaves to assist Dock Town after the Venatori take over in the ruins of the Blighted Dragon. However, once Neve commits herself to the Veilguard once again, the spark between Neve and Katari reignites.
Kalais Laidir, originally named Varhel, was born into a group from clan Mahariel that had broken away from Farelden and settled in Arlathan. He spent his childhood living in the Dalish clan, but always longed for something more. So, upon his first opportunity, he left his clan and ventured further into Tevinter. When in Minrathous, he found himself picked up in the slave trade, to which he was stuck in for a few years until he was liberated by the Shadow Dragons. At first, he believed that he wanted to be a Shadow Dragon so that he could free slaves like himself, but quickly learned that he was too traumatized by his experiences to offer assistance. He left Minrathous and ventured as far east as he could travel, landing him in the Rivain Coast. Here, he was picked up by the Lords of Fortune, changed his name to Kalais Laidir, and pfficially moved to Rivain. Kalais is a Dalish Elf who specializes with a bow, utilizing his knowledge of hunting as his style of combat. Kalais romances Davrin. The two are at odds with each other when they first meet -- Kalais' nonchalant and jovial attitude does not mesh well with Davrin's serious nature -- but, over time, Kalais shows Davrin what it means to have a little fun and Davrin helps Kalais keep his two feet on the ground. The two Elves are very good for each other and they end up falling in love.
There is a fourth "Rook" -- Emmrich's wife who joins the Veilguard alongside him when Rosahni and her team searches for a fade expert. I may introduce her properly soon.

Tough finish going into the break
The second international break is almost upon us and North End face a difficult end to this little section of the season as we travel to Turf Moor on Saturday to face Burnley. The trip to East Lancashire comes on the back of a very mixed week for Paul Heckingbottom with North End having meekly surrendered at Millwall last Saturday followed by a second half power show against Watford at Deepdale on Wednesday evening. To be fair to the manager he is still sorting out his squad and in the six league games he has been in charge he has won two, drawn two and lost two. Add to this, of course, two wins in the Carabao Cup albeit the one against Fulham was thanks to that marathon penalty shootout which ended 16-15 in North End`s favour. It is not a bad start by any means considering what went before and I said when Paul was given the job that I would be more than happy if we were half way up the league at Christmas. We currently sit 21st although the league is so tight we are only three points behind Oxford who are 11th so no need to panic just yet.
Last Saturday North End put in a very poor performance down in SE16 and came away with their tails between their legs having lost 1-3 to Millwall. The Lions just seemed to be more purposeful in everything they did and they will probably not have an easier game than this one all season. Two down at half-time was not the best position to be in but when the home side made it three early in the second half there was no way back for North End. The Jordan Storey goal just before the end was little consolation for the 786 who made the long trek to South Bermondsey and I though PH`s comments at the end told a story when he had said that he saw things he didnt like for the first time since coming to the club.
It was a different story on Wednesday evening at Deepdale as North End comprehensively beat a decent Watford side by three goals to nil. It took North End a while to get going with the five changes from the team that started at Millwall but once we cracked on we played much better and put in a cracking second half performance to overcome the Hornets and breath some confindence onto the Deepdale terraces. Two goals from Mulutin Osmajic and a third from Ali McCann were enough to see North End home and dry but Freddie had to make a couple of very good saves to keep the visitors out on an evening when Deepdale roared again as the boys put in a performance that everyone associated with the club could be proud of.
On Saturday we take on high flying Burnley away from home in what looks a daunting encounter on paper given the respective form of the two sides. The Clarets currently sit second in the Championship with seventeen points from eight games. At home Burnley have won three and drawn one of their four games to date and are clearly one of the strongest sides in the division. However I think Paul Heckingbottom will see it as an opportunity to show the nation what his new team can do and at least this season we will hopefully get a committed performance unlike the 0-3 debacle we saw two seasons ago under the previous regime. This is a tough assignment but stranger things have happened and Rovers got a draw there in a fierce local derby so we should take some comfort from that and go out and show the Sky viewers what we can do.
And finally this week:- I was down at the ticket office on Thursday morning getting my Arsenal ticket. I sit in the Invincibles and the cost was £32.50 which I think is the most I have ever paid at Deepdale to watch a match in my own seat. This isn`t a criticism of the club it is just an observation because I believe the club were between a rock and a hard place when it came to pricing this fixture. Buisness was brisk and I really hope we sell out for this which could be the biggest game of the season.

Tea enjoyed a rapid rise in popularity in Britain after its introduction in the 1650s. Less than a century later, tea was more popular than beer. [...] But without a knowledge of how to actually process tea, Britain was reliant upon its trade with China [...]. But by the mid-nineteenth century, foreign travel and trade in China were tightly restricted following the Opium War. Instead it was hoped that tea could be produced in colonized land in Assam -- largely through indentured labor -- thus circumventing altogether the need to trade with China. [...] In 1848, the British East India Company sent Scottish botanist Robert Fortune to China. He was tasked with securing both an adequate supply of quality tea plants as well as the knowledge of how exactly they needed to be processed. Ignoring Chinese imperial bans on foreign incursions into the country, Fortune journeyed inland [...], he writes of disguising himself [...]. At the end of his journey, he hired a number of Chinese specialists to travel to Assam and pass on their skilled trade.
In one popular history by Sarah Rose, Fortune is framed as a spy or even a thief, though this framing is contested. Alistair Watt, in a biography of Fortune, implores readers not to interpret Fortune’s plant transfers within the framework of our present-day thinking about intellectual property or biopiracy [...].
But [...] I cannot bring myself to romanticize Fortune as a swashbuckler or see his actions as innocuous. For we know from even the very recent past that reimagining and reassessing histories of empire are essential acts of decolonizing our cultural narratives.
As historian Lucile Brockway once wrote, these were circumstances in which “a corps of trained botanists [were] supported by the state and ready to cooperate with the government in removing from a weaker nation a desirable plant for development on British soil, under British control.” [...]
[T]he more I read of Fortune, the more I take this history personally. [...] I am mixed race -- British, [...] with my grandparents born in China -- yet I have never passed as wholly one or the other. So every time I read about Fortune, every time I find a new framing or defense of his work, I come back to the notion that one day, before setting out, he sewed a queue into his hair and disguised himself in Mandarin dress. [...]
How can I begin to think about tea, knowing that the workings of empire are not wholly in the past and cannot entirely be undone? What happens when a plant -- and a people -- are moved from their perceived rightful place? [...]
There’s a famous saying that what we call tea in a language depends entirely on the workings of trade during the period of empire: “Tea if by sea, cha if by land.” If your culture first received tea via trade routes from Fujian in the south of China, your language likely calls it something like “te”: thé, Tee, tea. If trade over land brought you tea, you likely call it something like the standard Mandarin 茶 (“chá”): chai, shay, cha.
The very notion of movement, of trade and empire, is written into this plant.
But our knowledge shifts depending on who’s doing the storytelling.

Reading your tags on the travel poll - you're absolutely right. International travel *used* to be more common among USians, especially to nearby Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean where we used to be able to travel without a passport. But travel costs and restrictions on top of income inequity means fewer people traveling. Also? I've traveled over 4,000 miles/6,700km to a vacation destination (Hawai'i) and was still in the US. It's big here.
Yeah this is it exactly. I can be in France or Belgium in a few hours max for not a HUGE sum of money, and from there the rest of Europe is easy access. Its not even all that difficult to get from here to Africa or the Middle East in all honestly, I understand that a flight from NY to LA is only a bit shorter than a flight from London to Dubai. Insane!
And then wealth inequality and the cost of travel for people in the US is clearly also a huge factor. Its just so much more expensive for Americans to travel to the rest of the world, since you are separated from it by two huge oceans. Even South America is a bloody long trek for someone living in New York.
Though I do think its worth mentioning that when I was staying with a friend in Alabama once upon a time, it was really eye opening to me how so many of her fellow students at her uni had never even left the state let alone the country. I was treated with a mix of curiosity and fascination because I was doing a backpacking trip around the world (literally - I kept to one direction and ended up back where I started take THAT flat Earthers! Lol) and a lot of the comments I got were... why? One extremely patriotic dude was like "why would I leave? America is the greatest country on Earth". (He was also possibly the most idiotic person I've ever met in my life so there is that) so I did get the impression, certainly among certain areas, communities, states, etc... that they simply have no interest in travel either. Though I can't imagine that mindset is one that is popular among Americans who use Tumblr...
So basically there are many many factors as to why Americans don't seem to travel outside of America unlike most people from other countries. It was crazy to me back when I was there how few people had travelled, whereas here in the UK i can't think of a single person I know who hasnt travelled to multiple countries as its just the norm.
Its interesting seeing those differences of experience reflect in the polls though. Tumblr is so America orientated but honestly if that poll was done among only non Americans, I am certain the results would skew heavily in favour of 9+ countries. Over 50% for sure.
#america vs the world#interesting things#come to think of it when i was backpacking australia americans were few n far between#backpackers came from all over#europe asia even canadians tend to do the backpacking thing#but no americans#i never met any americans on my travels until I arrived in america#which i guess also sorta proves the point#americans dont travel#asks
