Rising from the grave with another sci-fi franchise to obsess over. Very new transformers fan and very novice mech artist. May I present to you: SD-227

He was named Steve by a human who found him in their barn. An ex-decepticon seeker drone, Steve's (originally SD-227) a clone of the same base model as thousands of similar 'bots. He's got a fucked-up looking face and wears a battle mask most of the time, if he's not using a holoform (basically a projection of a human to blend in w the natives). He's supposed to be a stealth/recon drone but is extremely clumsy, in part due to major system damage that has yet to be entirely repaired on grounds of lack of resources.

Still working on his reason for defection, but I'm leaning towards being left for/assumed dead after a battle. Damage to some of his core systems made him unable to communicate/share location with other 'cons. The main Decepitcon warship on earth (Nemesis) is notoriously difficult to track, and he'd had extensive damage to his wings anyhow, so he was in no position to move around, let alone transform and seek his allies. Something something he has to rely on another, a non-decepticon, alien, of all people, learns to become his own individual, and develops the suppressed empathy that was always a part of his programing.

Summary: A short fic based on the song "ZOOM UP !" by Kahimi Karie. Benrey, Joshua and Gordon go out on an walk. Computer-virus-now-turned-human Benrey has to learn how a digital camera functions. Feelings and emotions get in the way as per the usual ! Tags: sfw, Benrey/Gordon Freeman, pure fluff, tooth rotting fluff, mutual pining (not mentioned for Gordon's side), lots and lots of sappiness, computer virus tries to learn how a digital camera works irl, not beta read at ALL

The bitter-yet-kind air of spring nips at Benrey’s nose, making the stout man snort more obnoxiously than he otherwise would in such a pollen-riddled season. Surprisingly, being a computer virus hadn’t actually come with the advantage of being immune to actual real-world viruses (that’s what he calls this itching, anyways, no matter how much Gordon insists that no, it is not a virus, Benrey is just allergic, which is like. So much lamer.), but that’s the least of his problems right about now as he blinks sluggishly at the strange device in his palms, turning and twisting it like he was investigating a new item in a Resident Evil game, looking for clues.

The human looks amused by his antics, anyways, judging by the ugly snort he lets out followed by the smile stretching across freckled cheeks which does not make Benrey’s heart palpitate weirdly as if he’s on the brink of a heart attack. 

“ It’s a camera, Benrey,  „ Gordon carefully, patiently explains, green eyes kind despite the kid currently tugging on his pants demanding that they go to the park, dad, pleaasee!!, “ Like the- you literally had a camera in Xen, how can you not recognize it? ,,

Benrey sniffles once in reply, stubby fingers finally properly gripping the gadget before he look up at Gordon, sensing that he’s supposed to verbally respond to that question. “ uhhhh. yours is. shittier. ,, He deadpans as if that’s supposed to explain anything, fingernails digging into the sides of the camera like there’s supposed to be a hinge and the camera just doesn’t know it yet. “ there’s no- there’s no film slot thing. how are you supposed to take pictures without film, idiot? stupid useless device. ,,

Gordon snorts again, like there’s some great inside joke that Benrey had been oh so cruelly left out of, before the man bends up to scoop the fussy child up in his arms, groaning at the way his bones creak like awkward hinges that hadn’t been greased in a long time. Can one grease their bones, anyways? Is that, like, an automatic function? Benrey’s body surely doesn’t do that, judging by the constant pains in his spine. Then again, Gordon does often comment that he sits like a fucked up shrimp, so-

Finger snap in front of his dazed eyes and Benrey is quick to catch on, blinking once, twice, before his other senses catch up and he tunes back into Gordon’s monologue with a startled look. 

“ Have you- were you even listening to what I was saying? ,, Gordon doesn’t expect a reply to that, Benrey’s learnt that’s merely a rhetorical question by now- of course Benrey isn’t paying attention, he almost never is, “ I was telling you about how these are digital cameras. Don’t need film if you just have an SD card to - how do you not know about digital cameras, even? They’ve been around forever, man, that’s like- you know about gaming PCs but not about digital cameras? What even- ,,

Just like how Gordon had previously broken Benrey out of his trance, the shorter repays the kindness by flicking Gordon’s forehead just harshly enough to break him out of his rambling. At first, he quiets up, but he’s quick to continue as if nothing happened, putting one hand on his hip whilst his other, prosthetic one, is busy holding up his child who has by now begun to play with Gordon’s hair out of boredom.

“ It’s just- I’m not asking for much, man. Just one nice picture with me and Joshie, yeah? Then we can continue on our walk. ,, Gordon would be a fool to believe in Benrey having an attention span longer than a few seconds, and Benrey is already considering him a fool for thinking that he can do anything more complex than press the popcorn button on their microwave. Still, the short man shrugs and waves Gordon off, a sign that, whilst begrudgingly so, Benrey’s willing to entertain his antics.

The smile that Gordon flashes back is nearly as blinding as that of a camera’s flash, and Benrey feels like he should cover his eyes lest he go blind, yet he surprisingly doesn’t mind the thought of losing his vision due to the man’s happy grin. He does, however, mind the instant nausea effect that he gets right after that thought, world tilted just a little off its axis as he watches Gordon bound over to the spot he had picked out for the picture whilst Benrey was probably spaced out. Benrey, being the oh so diligent security guard that he still believes he is, follows shortly thereafter. Just to make sure Gordon doesn’t cause a scene, of course.

They’re dressed more fashionably than either of them are used to, really- Gordon has decided to bundle up in the bright orange sweater that he had oh so lovingly been gifted by Dr. Coomer this past Christmas, along with a stereotypical combo of blue dad jeans and sandals with white socks. His green-tinted glasses sit awkwardly on his nose, the lenses crooked and bent from probably sitting on them by accident far too many times, and his prosthetic glistens in the bright sun of the afternoon, a vivid black and orange metal that matches the design of the HEV suit almost uncannily so. Pfft, fanboy.

Benrey, on the other hand, had tried something other than the usual black hoodie and gray sweatpants, the recent dressing up games that he had been playing giving him a more refined fashion taste than before. Not like he had been programmed with a fashion taste, after all, but Benrey likes to believe he’s improved anyways. Dressed in a white tank top with a black leather jacket he’d stolen from Gordon draped over his shoulders, a pair of khaki-colored jeans that Gordon insisted on getting him no matter Benrey’s protests and whines. He had forgone a hat today, surprisingly, though he’d ended up snatching Gordon’s anyways, a bright orange beanie that matched the scientist’s sweater, coming from none other than Bubby himself.

Joshua’s outfit had actually been picked out by the kid himself, this time, deciding on a pair of cream knee-length shorts and a matching-colored bucket hat, a graphic t-shirt currently hidden by the tightly zipped up bomber jacket around his body. God, Benrey felt as if just yesterday he had been staring at a pruny baby swaddled in blankets, only to now feel his eyes soften impossibly so as he stares at the chestnut curls that bounce with the motion of Joshua’s head as he turns towards the short man, offering him a similarly blinding smile that shows off the gap in his teeth proudly so.

Snapped out of his reverie, Benrey shakes his head as if trying to get rid of a dizzy spell, focusing back on the gadget at hand as he brings it up to his face. It really is a technological marvel to him- he’s so used to static, low quality props that felt like air in his hands, yet now he can brush his fingers against the material, can feel all the ridges of the plastic casing on his fingertip, can drag his nail on the scratched up silver accents, can see the image reflected actually change as he moves the camera around, trying to get a proper angle.

He’s not exactly a photographer, per se, but it’s not like he can’t see which angles are flattering and which are very much now. He fidgets with the settings for a bit, tongue poking out as he flicks through all the filters available only to settle for the default anyways. Best not to fuck up and have Gordon chide him for it later, though he suspects the man has been going softer on the arguing lately. He tends to look at Benrey with a far more tender look, an indecipherable emotion swirling within those pupils that makes Benrey’s once-digital self feel all like scrambled code and ciphers on the inside.

Finally, he finds the perfect angle, the light reflecting off of the models just so, bringing out all the details Benrey had been striving for. At first, he fumbles with every button for a moment, unaware of which one actually takes the photo, before he promptly startles at the sound of the shutter going off, camera unceremoniously falling onto the dewy grass. Grumbling as he hears the echo of two laughters basking in his misery and shame, the short man reaches down to grab the camera, only to wince as a resounding crack comes from the small of his back, bringing forth even more laughter at his expense.

“ boo, laughing at my pain. how dare you. punishment for you both, eternal torture . ,, Benrey hisses as he finally manages to grapple the now wet camera back in his hands, using the corner of his tank top to messily wipe away the dew before pointing it the same way it had been before, huffing and puffing. The pouting doesn’t last for long, however, as Benrey’s jaw slackens at the sight reflected in the feed of his camera-

Gordon and Joshua are both leaning their heads into one another’s as they laugh, both their faces scrunched up with what must be a chest-aching amount of laughter. Like this, Gordon’s wrinkles become all the more apparent, yet all they do is make him look all the more breathless, crow’s feet tracing the arc in which his eyes are squeezed shut whilst his smile dimples in his cheeks, giving his expression just another pop that has Benrey’s breath catching in his throat. And Joshua’s smiling wildly too, the missing canine on full display as his cheeks are blotchy and red from laughter, small torso heaving with the force of his childish giggles-

Benrey remains staring there dumbfounded long after the shutter of the camera goes off, long after the pair’s laughter die down only to be replaced with concerned glances shared between father and son as they stare at the man who stands there utterly slack-jawed. There’s a blush crawling on Benrey’s face, the redness tracing a path all the way down his neck and to his chest, and Gordon lets out another ugly snort at the thought of Benrey looking as if he’d been sunburnt, the sound finally enough to once again snap the shorter out of whatever stupor he had been under.

“ bwuh- uh– ,, He flounders like a fish out of sea, glancing between the device, then the tall man, then the device again, as if there’s a puzzle slotting together right before his very eyes.

 Instinctively, not knowing what else he is meant to do, Benrey then begins waving his hand around with the camera still clutched tightly as if he was rushing the development of a polaroid, the sudden movement pulling a startled laugh out of Gordon. Eventually, after enough staring from both ends, the curly haired man merely shakes his head and kneels down to allow Joshua to practically bolt out of his arms, quick to stand back up and place his hands on his waist as he looks at the child with a happy grin before once again focusing his attention on his silent friend, his pace lazy and unhurried as he makes his way over towards the frozen figure.

“ Try not to swallow a fly, dude, ,, Gordon teases as he pats Benrey’s back roughly, said man gasping as if he’d actually choked on an insect right then and there, “ What’s up with you? Was the picture really that bad? Cmon, let me see. ,,

Wordlessly, Benrey snaps his jaw shut and passes the device silently to the taller man, Gordon’s mouth letting out an instinctual ‘thanks’ as he pulls it from Benrey’s grasp and moves to look through the gallery. Now it’s Gordon’s turn to gasp as he looks down at the screen with wide eyes, almost unbelieving of the candid photo Benrey had took- it looked near professional, really, save for the little bit of motion blur, but to Gordon’s eyes it was perfect.

“ Oh my God, dude, this is- this is awesome! ,, Gordon laughs excitedly, bouncing on his feet as he clutches the camera even tighter, “ I’m so printing this out- thanks a bunch, Benrey, you’re the fucking best! ,,

Still reeling from the events that had just unfolded, Benrey barely has the time to let out a startled ‘whuh-’ before his head is wretched by an arm wrapping around his neck, quick to hear the shutter going off as he notices the camera is now pointed towards themselves. Stumbling on his feet once Gordon lets him go, Benrey blinks as if having actually been dazed by a nonexistent flash, the shorter man having to clutch tightly onto Gordon’s forearm so as to not collapse then and there. Gordon lets him, of course, far too focused on the camera in hand to really pay any attention to the way in which he instinctively offers up his limb for the other to hold onto.

“ Gonna hang this one up, too. ,, That voice calls out again, this time less affectionate and more smug as he turns the camera around, showing Benrey the picture that Gordon had managed to sneak. It’s a pretty crappy picture, all things considered- a selfie of them that had definitely been taken in a hurry, yet Gordon’s crooked smile and Benrey’s shocked, flustered expression remain unblurred in the midst of it all, almost as if the camera is personally mocking him for existing. It’s… Cute, almost disgustingly so, like a photo you’d see in an old married couple’s album as they reminisce about their youthful love.

The thought of that alone is enough for Benrey to shove the beanie up until his eyes get covered as he grumbles and kicks at Gordon’s shins, ignoring the man’s outraged cries in favor of running away from the scene… Only to, of course, collide directly into the nearest tree due to his lack of sight. As he lays there on the dewy grass, however, and listens to Gordon’s wheezy laughter as the man undoubtedly makes fun of him, Benrey finds no annoyance in his heart, merely basking in that familiar feeling of scrambled emotions bouncing around in his heart like a game of fucked up ping pong. Maybe digital cameras weren’t so shitty, after all.

No one knew why Emperor Wukong and Empress Macaque executed the Ivory Lady so brutally. She had committed no crime and hadn’t even presented herself to either of them during her time in the Celestial Realm. But she had offended them in some manner and paid the price.

Many whispered that the demon’s death had something to do with the Prince. He didn’t look so well after he briefly spoke with her, after all.

It must’ve been an attempted assassination, many guessed. And it must’ve been a close call too with how the entire palace hadn’t seen a hair or tail of the Prince ever since the incident. No servant was allowed into his quarters - not even to bring food. Nearly all of the servants mourned the Prince’s absence. He was well loved and well respected by the staff because of his considerate treatment towards all of them. He protected them from his parents’ wrath too.

There was no one to protect them now.

Unlike her older brother, Princess Xiaodan was sighted out of her rooms many times, but never out of either parent’s arms. They held her close and tight no matter how much she whined and wiggled as if she would disappear the instant they weren’t touching her.

When the confusion that followed after the Ivory Lady’s execution settled, the Emperor demanded certain treasures and texts to be gathered and destroyed. Many historians and celestials who clung onto traditions tried to fight back against the Monkey Emperor’s orders. Even the Brotherhood stepped forward, questioning Wukong’s unexpected decision to decimate priceless artifacts.

But then, the Emperor and Empress brought Azure, Peng, and Yellow Tusk in for a private meeting. They came out of it completely shaken. Whatever the rulers told them changed their minds completely about the matter. Azure Lion personally saw to it that the artifacts and texts were all gathered and destroyed.

What in the world did the Ivory Lady do? Many could only wonder and speculate.

All of these whispers reached Macaque’s six ears, of course. He’d usually laugh at how nonsensical and outlandish the rumors were. But not this time. Not when the truth was even more unbelievable.

And frightening.

Another world. Macaque could barely fathom it. Time travel itself was a feat that went against nature, but traveling different worlds?

The fact that MK and A-Dan ever came into their lives was only because of a mishap - a one in a million chance - was heartbreaking to Macaque. Instead of being part of a hopeful future, the cubs were simply an impossibility that managed to land in Macaque and Wukong’s laps by mere chance, ready to be taken away at any moment. The bitterest part of Macaque chided himself for being so surprised. It had all been too perfect, too good to be true. He should’ve asked more questions. He should’ve listened to MK in the beginning. He should’ve known better.

But Macaque knew that even if he had exercised some caution, it would’ve changed nothing. MK and A-Dan fit into his heart and his life so perfectly that he couldn’t imagine a world without them anymore. He’d break if they ever left. He was certain of it.

But Liu’er Mihou was never one to let go of something precious once he had it in his grasp. He didn’t when it came to Wukong and he wouldn’t now with his cubs. They were his. It didn’t matter where they came from. All that mattered was that they weren’t going to leave.

And if the him from the other world ever came to take his cubs away, Macaque would be ready.

Macaque heard the sound of a cleared throat, jerking him away from the whispers and his thoughts. Azure stood before him, looking hesitant. Usually, the presence of the Celestial Beast would have elicited some instinctive feeling of irritation and paranoia, but Macaque felt none of that now. Just exhaustion.

“Azure?” The name would usually hop out of Macaque’s tongue with a spit and hiss like a piece of hot coal thrown into water. It almost sounded normal now, like how he used to call for Azure back when things were new and simple. It surprised Macaque and, almost hysterically, he wondered to himself if this was a sign that the world was ending.

Azure was similarly surprised. He was so caught off guard that he floundered for a bit as if the lack of vitriol stole his voice. Grimly, Macaque thought that it was quite ironic that he managed to make a fool out of Azure in the moment he wanted it least. He graciously gave Azure the time to recover and make whatever report he came to deliver.

“All documents and artifacts connected to time and space have been gathered and destroyed.” Macaque could feel the tension in his shoulders relax at the news. “We’re combing through the libraries and the treasuries for the second time to be sure, but I am confident that we got them all.”

Macaque took a shaky breath and closed his eyes with sheer relief. “Thank you, Azure,” he said - and he meant it. There was a time that saying those words to Azure was an impossible trial to perform, but when it came to his cubs, moving mountains didn’t seem so difficult. “It might not prevent them from coming here but -

“It cuts down the chances of Prince MK and Princess Xiaodan from leaving,” Azure finished. “But just in case, we are all preparing for the worst.”

“…Has MK left his room yet?”

Azure shook his head, looking genuinely sorry. Macaque didn’t bother to hide his disappointment. He knew that his eldest needed more time but…he didn’t like seeing MK so upset with him and Wukong.

“Give him time,” Azure soothed. “You have all the time in the world for him to accept his circumstances and forgive you. As parents, you both must make difficult decisions for your cubs in order to keep them safe and happy.”

“Speaking of difficult decisions, I’m late for a very important meeting with Iron Fan,” Macaque sighed, ears twitching as he heard his sworn sister’s voice in the palace. “Setting up a last-minute engagement ceremony isn’t an easy task.”

And it truly wasn’t. But ever since learning about the truth, the entire Demon Bull Family and the Dragon Family’s Heiress were quite insistent on making the marriage happen. Red Son and Mei both came to Wukong and Macaque to beg for MK’s hand. And who was Macaque to stand in the way of love, especially when the pair had proven themselves capable and strong. Besides, Red Son and Mei were one of the few people MK interacted with. As much as it pained Macaque to send his eldest away so soon, it was for the best. MK needed more bonds to tie him to the world and more reminders that this world was better than his old one.

As Macaque met with and discussed plans with Princess Iron Fan, Red Son and Mei went to visit MK. Much to their dismay, MK refused to let even them enter his room. No matter how much they pleaded and cajoled, he kept his door shut.

“Maybe today is just a bad day. We can try again tomorrow,” Mei comforted Red Son as he moped on their way back.

“But he’s never turned us away before…”

Mei gave Red Son’s shoulder a squeeze before pulling him into a one-armed hug. “Awww, don’t let this get you down, Red! Maybe he’s just super-nervous about the engagement ceremony.”

“Do you really think so?”

“Yeah! I -

The pair’s conversation stopped the moment Wukong came into view with A-Dan in his arms. Red Son and Mei immediately untangled themselves from each other and bowed.

“Your majesty.”

“Hey kids, visiting MK?” Wukong greeted, all too used to their presence by now. “How is he?”

Red Son’s shoulders slumped. “My Prince…did not let us in.”

“No?” Wukong’s smile disappeared, making the pair flinch. While the Monkey King had never raged at either of them, they had witnessed his anger enough times to be wary of it being aimed at them. Thankfully, Wukong’s mood only dropped into a resigned sort of disappointment instead of anger. “Well. That’s too bad. Guess he’s experiencing some engagement ceremony jitters since that’s coming up soon. Isn’t that right, A-Dan? Gege is in a silly mood and wants to be alone.”

At her father’s coo, A-Dan’s ears twitched and she giggled.

“No! Silly Baba!”

“Oh, I’m silly, am I? What did I get wrong?”

“Not alone! Gege with friend!” A-Dan exclaimed proudly. Unbeknownst to her, Wukong, Red Son, and Mei all stiffened and shared sharp looks. “Silly Baba.”

Wukong continued to smile at A-Dan. “Yes, yes, Baba is silly and A-Dan is right,” he agreed with her. “Will my smart girl tell me about Gege’s friend? I want to meet them.” And learn about how they managed to sneak through the security.

A-Dan raised a tiny finger over her lips. “No tell. Promise. Secret,” she whispered before bursting into giggles.

Wukong was not as amused. Not only his son, but this nameless threat was casually speaking with his daughter too?

“Did you hear that, Moonlight? MK has a new friend over. I know you’re a little busy, but why don’t you drop by and say hi? I’ll be there with A-Dan and the other kids in a sec.”

By the time Wukong managed to reach MK’s room, his Moonlight was already on his way out with an amused quirk in his smile.

“Mama!” A-Dan chirped. Her tail wiggled happily when he took her from Wukong’s arms and kissed her cheek.

Wukong looked from Macaque to the now-closed doors of MK’s room. “Moonlight, did you find…?”

“He was experimenting with Shadow Magic and tired himself out,” Macaque explained with a hint of pride. “His new “friend” must’ve been a shadow clone he managed to manifest in front of A-Dan.”

“Just a clone?” Wukong could hardly believe it. All that stress and panic over nothing?

“Yeah. Just a clone,” Macaque confirmed gently. “We’re all a little high-strung. I think we deserve a little break.” Right at this moment, A-Dan let out the squeakiest yawn. “How about a nap?”

“A nap sounds great, actually.”

“Good, it’s decided then. We’ll take a nap,” Macaque announced and started to guide his mate and his daughter to their quarters. Red Son and Mei left the family after saying their farewells. Later, as they laid curled around a snoozing A-Dan, Wukong felt Macaque’s tail wind around his for comfort.

“We won’t lose them.”

“We won’t.”

“We know everything that’s happening and we’re making moves to prevent every scenario.”

“Exactly.”

“Everything is going to be alright.”

OMG I love this one. I just re-read it a short time ago. I've always had a fascination with the paranormal, and I really loved the concept of Poe investigating a haunted house with Rey as the ghost. But... how to give them a happy ending? So, I turned it into a curse rather than an actual ghost story.

BTW, the house in my moodboard is the Adams House in Deadwood, SD. Our local paranormal group offers 'ghost hunts' there every October, and my brother and I went one year. So fun, and so much history. I want to do it again!

Some Thoughts About the First 3 Episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam [0079] Part 2

*Spoiler warnings again for both Mobile Suit Gundam and The Witch from Mercury.

*I forgot to mention this in Part 1, but the first time I saw Amuro in animation isn't 0079, but was instead the time he met Hello Kitty, who proceeded to transform his enemies into super deformed versions of themselves:

*And yes, you should watch this, even if you know absolutely *nothing* about Hello Kitty or Gundam (or, perhaps especially if you know nothing). Incidentally, super deformed (SD) Gundams have a long history in the franchise, so what Hello Kitty does isn't even that weird for Gundam (just imagine if she met Suletta instead, and transformed Aerial).

*Another thing I forgot to mention, was that the show's pretty competent about transitions: the Zeon's soldiers earlier were scouting Side 7 via binoculars, which led to them spying Fraw's buggy and switching to her perspective, and her discussion with Amuro about his dad incidentally transitions to scenes with the folks working on Side 7's secret military projects. While the titular Gundam is one of those projects, it's not the only one: I've mentioned before that several characters will be joining White Base, which is a new battleship the Earth Federation has been constructing:

*Shiny! And yes, very toyetic, though I'm growing to get very annoyed at people who refer to Gundam shows as toy commercials as a pejorative about their storytelling quality (some folks have been especially fond of talking about Witch from Mercury that way, and always for the same reason).

*Aboard White Base, we get to meet Amuro's dad, Lieutenant Tem Ray.

*The book he's reading is the instruction manual on how to pilot the Gundam, which I believe was written either partially or in whole by him (yes, this will be important shortly). The other guy with him is Bright Noa.

*So, Bright is rather (in)famous for slapping Amuro at least once during Gundam (maybe more?), so much that there's memes about it, and that, along with the fact that he's a captain, is probably one of the first things you'll hear about him. However, this is an excellent example of how memes decontextualize stories, and fun though they can be, can give you an extremely wrong impression. See, when I first heard 'Captain Bright Noa slaps Amuro for insubordination', it gave me a rather negative impression of him, since it sounded like a military officer flexing his rank against a kid who was drafted into battle (and understandably not okay with this). But if you actually *watch* 0079:

*It turns out Bright is only a few years older than Amuro, and is very much a teen himself who's only been in the military for half a year. Meaning the only way he's becoming a captain anytime soon is if he's the highest ranking officer who's not dead or incapacitated.

*In short, yes, Bright Noa using physical force against Amuro still isn't a good thing, but this is also very much the story of (essentially) someone who'd normally be a freshman at college being put in charge of a bunch of high-school-aged kids in a life-or-death situation and finding himself a bit in over his head, so I'm inclined to be a bit more sympathetic than I might otherwise.

*I really like this scene, even though I find it sad. Tem is very clearly talking to Bright here, but the camera notably focuses on Amuro, and it's pretty good foreshadowing if you didn't know Amuro was getting in the Gundam. With the passage of time, this scene has also taken on a layer of dramatic irony as well.

*I'm also not sure what to make of Tem from this scene. He seems friendly enough to Bright, and seems distressed about the idea of kids like his son fighting in wars, so he doesn't really come off as someone bad (except for the naive belief that you can build a weapon strong enough to end war, of course). While Amuro and Miorine seem to have a bit in common, I'm not sure yet how much that's true of Tem and Delling, aside from being military officers who want to protect their children, since Tem doesn't really seem like the sort of guy who'd authorize the UC equivalent of the Vanadis Incident. I'll have to mull this one over a bit more.

*It seems that unfortunately the White Base was followed by a Zeon ship, which was where the Zaku pilots were dispatched from, which segues into the audience meeting this guy:

*Char Aznable, whose very first lines instantly reminded me of this exchange between Belmeria Winston and Prospera Mercury:

*Char is is quite possibly the most (in)famous Gundam character, to the point that he's featured in commercials for cars and fast food (in Japan at least), and, of course, a number of memes. An examination of Gundam as a whole will reveal that many shows feature at least one mask-bearing antagonist or rival, who's typically manipulative and/or vengeful, and all of them can be traced back to Char. While I will be mentioning points of similarity between him and Prospera, I honestly feel like the connection between these two is by far the most obvious, and that it might be more worthwhile to discuss the ways in which they differ.

*Case in point. In addition to having unusual perspectives on luck (likely influenced by their high levels of confidence), Char and Prospera also have a good grasp of tactics, and are generally skilled at predicting opponents and choosing good moves to counteract them (though they are not always completely successful).

*Their attitude toward subordinates is also noteworthy. Prospera doesn't have a lot of interactions with her Shin Sei staff, but her calmly interrupting the one in the screenshots above (during the stress of the attack on Plant Quetta no less) is the rudest I've ever seen her act toward any of her them. In general, she seems to be a congenial boss who doesn't seem to get angry at her employees for disagreeing with her, a trait Char seems to share with how he treats his followers (so far anyway), and which is probably remarkable to me due to how often I see antagonists act like jerks to people loyal to them. Of course, both Char and Prospera are also known for manipulating people close to them, so how much this might be an act versus how much they genuinely care about others is ambiguous (and, admittedly, makes them interesting characters to observe).

*Char's mention of mobile suits shifts the scene back to the three Zeon pilots from the start, and one of them, Gene, decides that spying on the mobile suit project isn't enough, and opens fire.

*Amuro leaves the shelter to look for his father, and has his first encounter with a mobile suit.

*Anyone who's seen all of Witch from Mercury will already be aware that, leaving aside any armaments, the sheer size of a mobile suit is already incredibly dangerous to a human, as the Zaku simply taking a step knocks Amuro around a bit and prompts him to get in the buggy he and Fraw were in and drive.

*Amuro finds some soldiers and asks for help, but they meet a very abrupt end:

*You have absolutely seen shots like these before in anime, but I recently learned that they're typically referred to as postcard memories, a technique pioneered by Osamu Dezaki back in the early 70s, and since made ubiquitous. It's use is particularly interesting here for a couple reasons, the first being that MSG was made less than a decade after Dezaki started using this animation technique, meaning it would still feel relatively 'new' to audiences at the time. This shot also experiments by including some more traditionally animated objects in the scene, namely the transparent books and papers flying forward on the left side.

*The other reason, is that typically these were shots shown (at the time they were first used at least) to mark a transitional point, either narratively or in a character's arc, and while my knowledge of 70s anime is currently impoverished, I think Gundam may have been among the earliest to use this in such a tragically violent way (possibly beaten out by The Rose of Versailles since that also came out in '79, but I'm not familiar enough with that one to be sure). In any case, this a transitional shot, as it marks Amuro's first encounter with the horror and death caused by war, and the end of his childhood.

*This is a rather somber note to leave on, but at least next time we'll be finally seeing the eponymous Gundam, so hopefully that's somewhat comforting.

On impulse I started a project attempting to make an SD Gundam Woundwort in scale with some SDs from a DS G generations game. I failed in that goal mostly because this is pretty much half the size of the rest of them but I'm happier with the end result of an insanely tiny articulated Woundwort SD. The figure has 13 parts, 11 joints, 20mm in height, was printed on a Mars 2 Pro in Siraya tech Fast Mecha resin and took me a day to get it this far along. It's currently unfinished as it needs the rest of the head and crotch to be complete but I'm very pleased with the current state of it, It's a rare thing for me to show a 3D printed project these days. The joint design is all pulled from a 1/144 Optimus Prime I have in my backlog making this a very very technical Transformers retool, as well as using universal balljoints and sockets on every joint except for the elbows. I intend to make other SDs following this design style and scale for maximum kitbashing fun!

Spooky Season Damerey Fanfiction

Well, we all know Poe already had his own Halloween special, but sadly, Rey wasn't a part of his adventure.

However, two of my stories could be considered good spooky season fare. Both are Modern Alternate Universe stories.

The first one was written for last year's Damerey Week and had the prompt "Porcelain Dolls." It's a short story (for me) about a curse, and I actually researched how to remove curses for it! The house in the moodboard is the Adams House in Deadwood, SD, where I got to go on a real paranormal investigation a few years back.

The second one actually stars a haunted house and a familiar ghost. It's long, angsty, and has some intense smut, so be prepared! The house used in this moodboard is the house located on the property where I board my horse.
