On this day in 1869, the eastbound and westbound railroad tracks met at Utah's Promontory Summit, marking the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Though it remains a monumental moment in history, many Americans felt the railroad created a new empire, ruled by "masters of the iron horse rather than the people."

129. This year is the 150th anniversary of the first Transcontinental Railroad, which opened up rapid (for the time) access across the United States. The original event in 1869 was celebrated as the Central Pacific Railroad locomotive “Jupiter” and the Union Pacific Railroad locomotive #119 came nose-to-nose as a Golden Spike was driven into the final section of track. Well, we firmly believe that every good anniversary deserves cake! Recreate the Jupiter, or #119, or both, made entirely from cake.
Our team is blessed to have a super-talented baker/pastry artist amongst our members!

In honor of today’s 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad, a page from the catalog featuring the dioramas once displayed at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. A few of these dioramas can still be seen in the museum’s “Becoming LA” exhibit, but not sure if this one is out or in storage. Today’s Los Angeles Times features an important article describing the critical role the Chinese played in connecting the East and West Coasts through the transcontinental railroad. An excerpt:
As they approached the meeting point with the Union Pacific, thousands of them laid down a phenomenal 10 miles of track in less than 24 hours, a record that has never been equaled. A Civil War officer who witnessed the drama declared that the Chinese were “just like an army marching over the ground and leaving the track behind.”
Progress came at great cost: Many Chinese laborers died along the Central Pacific route. The company kept no records of deaths. But soon after the line was completed, Chinese civic organizations retrieved an estimated 1,200 bodies along the route and sent them home to China for burial.

Our new "All Aboard" exhibit has a great spot to take pictures of kids (or fun-loving adults like the Lincolns). It's all about trains, and it's located in Springfield's historic Union Station. #AllAboard #TranscontinentalRailroad #Transcontinental150 #AbrahamLincoln http://bit.ly/2Q0xZb9

The building of the Transcontinental Railroad relied on the labor of thousands of migrant workers, including Chinese, Irish, and Mormons workers. On the western portion, about 90% of the backbreaking work was done by Chinese migrants. About 10,000 to 15,000 Chinese workers came to the United States to build the Central Pacific Railroad. Many workers wore clothing traditional to southeastern China, where the Central Pacific Railroad sought laborers. Railroad companies considered Chinese migrants a source of cheap, unskilled labor. In America in the 1800s, Chinese workers were seen as racially inferior to white workers. Employers used this prejudice to justify paying Chinese workers less than other workers and to relegate Chinese workers to the most undesirable jobs.
