xion definitely makes a few fashion missteps (  nothing as bad as the onesie, thank you  ) as she gets more comfortable with fashion and assured of her own style — once she moves out of her intial ‘i’m just imitating the girls around me because it's important to me that i be read as a girl at all times’ thing and into ‘i’m confident enough to try my own styles and take risks.’  that being said, her looks are by and large pretty solid! she has 3.5 main ‘styles’ for the most part.  the first is a pretty feminine / soft goth thing that’s fairly close to her post - kh3 style.  (  this is the look that gets the .5 when she shifts from fem goth to fem punky; fewer skirts, more ripped jeans.  considers getting her nose pierced, hasn’t decided yet.  )  the second is a more beachy cute look, favours a lot of whites and pale blues, off - shoulder blouses, etc.  third is very 90s esque colour blocks, crop top hoodies, high waisted jeans, et cetera. there’s plenty of less 'styled' looks too, obviously, when she’s just throwing clothes on; t - shirts and shorts, sweatshirts and straight - cut mom jeans, printed gay button - ups, etc.  if she’s dating someone her size or larger, she probably steals their clothes, too.

Adding onto the discussion around Xion... I was also a hater of her when she was first revealed. I'm an old fan, and when BBS and 358 were announced, I found out about it through non-translated scans of Japanese magazines; me and my friends even translated her name ourselves. I didn't like her... not because I thought she was a Mary Sue. Not because I thought she was shoe-horned in. Not because I shipped anyone with anyone else and she ruined it. No. It was because I had made an OC exactly like her a year prior. Keyblade- check. Friends with Roxas and Axel- check. Was a girl- check. Randomly vanished for some reason- check. I thought that somehow Nomura himself had stolen my OC.

I look back and laugh at how dumb I was. I love Xion now. I love her story, I love her relations to Axel and Roxas, and the greater cast of characters, and I love her meaning within the greater narrative. Also, Trans Rights!

Kingdom hearts really made a character and said “hi this is naminé, she’s a sweet little girl in a bad situation and basically she’s made out of… she’s what would happen if you had kairi’s heart in sora’s body” and then they LATER came back and said “actually she’s not made of kairi anymore, she’s her own person. She has her own heart. But like. In riku’s body. In a body made to look identical to riku” and it is so funny to me that no one noticed she was transgender because they were too busy crying over kingdom hearts lore. See, here's the thing that kills me about the popularity of the nonbinary Xion headcanon, is that Xion was not assigned male at birth before she transed her gender.

She was assigned agender at birth.

Xion is constantly getting misgendered throughout all of Days, and it visibly upsets her every time, but crucially she is not being misgendered by being called 'he'! She is being misgendered in a dysphoria-causing way by being referred to as not having any gender, let alone the gender she knows she has (which is girl). She has a full-blown crisis when she finds out she was not born a girl. The narrative also positions everyone who refers to her with non-gendered pronouns as doing active harm to her or as being villainous in that moment; Saix constantly calling her 'it,' DiZ scoffing at Namine using "she" to refer to Xion. The narrative is clear that what is upsetting and dysphoric to Xion is being referred to as having no binary gender, even moreso than being forced to become masculine, which only becomes an added layer of dysphoria at the very end of the game.

That being the case... WHAT is the deal with why it is so popular to misgender her in the exact same way? She's a girl. She transed her gender so hard she forced other people to literally see her as a girl even though her physical body was a doll's.

- Is it that this fandom doesn't think she 'passes' well enough, so she can't really be a girl like she says she is?

- Is it that this fandom thinks that even if she says she's a girl, her body doesn't have female sex characteristics so she can't really be a girl, she must be what her body dictates she is?

- Is it that she's not demure and soft like the other two girls with her face, so she can't really be a girl like them? That girls don't have open and assertive body language?

- is it that she was born from Sora, so she can't really be a girl because her origin was a boy and she must be somewhere in the middle?

- is it just an empathy gap, where people can't identify with a trans girl and need to make her less trans somehow? An inability to square the idea of choosing a binary gender on purpose? An inability to see why she would choose to be a girl specifically? Is it the thing where so many people in fandom right now can't get invested in characters unless they're "just like me frfr" and so she can't be a trans girl?

What is it?? Why is the ONE canon trans girl not allowed to be a trans girl? When there is an entire cast of characters to otherwise choose from whose narratives are not SPECIFICALLY ABOUT being trans and a girl? I simply do not get it.
