Hong Kong from the eyes of an Instagrammer
Hong Kong’s places to visit was never of interest to me. It was all about their FOOD - I love warm meaty dim sums and sweet juicy roasts. It was a no-brainer that I will make it to Hong Kong some day for a dim sum pilgrimage.
Can’t recall exactly when but it was a day I flipped through the calendar and realised there wasn’t any holidays planned till 2020. So got onto skyscanner and booked 2 tix to Hong Kong! Boom!
BEST. DECISION. MADE. IN. 2019.
We had a very very comfortable flight to Hong Kong via Cathay Pacific. We regularly fly via budget airlines to other parts of Asia so it was nice to fly via full-service airline on this trip. Food wasn’t fantastic but Haagen Daz on-board was a nice touch!
Landed shortly past midnight. Didn’t feel like figuring out the train services at that ungodly hours so we booked an airport transfer via Rideways by Booking.com. Wasn’t exactly cheap however service by our driver Ken Wan was top notch so I ain’t complaining. I highly recommend Ken if you are looking for an airport transfer in HK. He is so good with his instructions that it made navigating out of the airport so easy for us. 5 STARS!
Ken drove us right up to Hong Kong Island where we booked a 3-night stay at Hotel Jen via Booking.com . I have left my reviews on Booking.com so feel free to scroll through and read before deciding if you should go with our choice. It was a no-frills stay so we found it hard to justify the price we paid. However, you’ll appreciate the convenience of the location. The hood is very different in the wee hours and when the sun comes up! Love it!
Husband did the planning for most parts of this trip. He said he knew he had to pick the most instagrammable places to entice his wife to remain excited throughout the trip ;)
For the rest of this post, you’ll view snippets of my instastory to stay true to the IG-worthy theme.
Started the first day with a day trip to Tai O fishing village on Lantau Island. Wasn’t hard to get there via MTR and their bus service. You can google to find the varied ways to get to Tai O. A Singaporean we met on this trip advised to avoid Tai O during the weekends. Good for us we went on a Friday morning. There was barely any crowd. We took a leisurely stroll and munched on food we found along our path.
These spicy jumbo fishballs were the first thing we ate on this trip. It was the perfect pairing for the cold weather. My lips were on fire, in a good way.
Told ya - there was sooo much to eat as you walk around exploring the village on your own but eat sparingly because you shouldn’t miss out on this tiny dim sum stall. Their plump Har Gows simply glide down your throat one after another. Never ever had one that is this good! Do not worry about having more than 1 platter because there is soooo much walking to do (so you need to fuel up!) and of course a lot more to see besides food.
Tai O is an Instagram haven. There are so many activities and spots to photograph but I wasn’t sure how I would feel if I were to live there... at times I felt like I was intruding the locals’ personal space. Maybe no, there were plenty who greeted us with warm smiles and just went about doing their own things.
Amidst the busy daily morning activities and the buzz in the marketplace, we stumbled upon a white building with massive Christmas decorations. Later realised it was a Church. We stood there thinking if we should go in to pay respects when a local greeted us with a big “Hello” and signalled us to go in. We entered but couldn’t find a prayer hall so exited almost immediately. Happy to have visited during the Christmas season to see the Church in it’s full glory.
We left Tai O to to check out the bargains at the Citygate Outlets located right smack at the MTR station where we have to transit. Very strategic I must say!
If you’ve been to the outlet malls in the US, then this wouldn’t excite you. Bagged a couple of items from Adidas and was mighty pleased with the discount. Left as soon as we gobbled down some roast meat on steamed rice for late lunch.
MTR’s well connected lines and undisrupted service ensured we arrived at the hotel on time to freshen up and head out for our night exploration. The moment we arrived back to HK Island, I missed the charm of Tai O. It was a great escapade from the concrete jungle. The city girl in me truly appreciated that side of HK!
For the night we decided on something a little more touristy - we cruised along Victoria Harbour on-board AquaLuna, a traditional Chinese junk boat. Hubs researched on the various cruise offerings and we unanimously agreed on AquaLuna. He got us tix on Klook . Each tix covered a complimentary drink for the 45-min sail. We ordered taro chips to go with our glass of red. It was indeed a beautiful start to our holiday!
We disembarked at the Victoria Harbour waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui and walked along the Avenue of Stars, an avenue to honour HK film celebrities. It was just about time for the famous light show ‘Symphony of Lights’ to begin so we promptly grabbed a cup of hot chocolate each to catch the show in the cold winter night. Hong Kong is a true stunner at night!
It was hard to end the night early when there was still so much going on around that area. We pressed on and moved on to explore Nathan Street. Nightlife in HK didn’t seem any different from SG - it was all about brightly lit streets, bustling crowd and many more food options.
After clocking 25, 663 steps, we stopped for a quick wonton mee dinner and retired for the night. Thank God for our Timberland boots investment else we couldn’t have managed all that non-stop walking!
Day 2 was a lot more slower... we had to as our energy was depleting after a full on day 1!
We took the MTR once again (we did all day err day alright) and headed towards Quarry Bay to take photographs of the famed monster building. While searching for directions on how to get there, Hubs chanced upon the news that a photo taking ban has been put in place since Sep 2019. Apparently the residents complained about all the mayhem created by instagrammers so they fenced up the area! Oh, well; we didn’t give up ;)
Saw the banner and the fence? Occasionally you’ll have people coming out of their shops to monitor your movements. We were constantly whispering to each other while we were there as we were afraid of being chased out before we were done.
If you got sick of HK food and looking for some Indian/Indo fare, this is also the place to visit. We caught sight of non-locals patronising the grocery stores around this area. There were plenty of hair salons in a single stretch too!
Quarry Bay is an unconventional mix of modern buildings, old school housing charm, marketplaces, traditional bakeries, modern cafes and way more.
Then it was back on the MTR to head towards the Central for some touristy shopping and gourmet indulgence before the next item on our itinerary - Victoria Peak!
Victoria Peak via the tram ride was totally Hubs’ idea. He didn’t manage to go up the Peak during his first visit to HK so this was a first time experience for us both. Once again, we got our tix from Klook. It was basically a combo ticket so we opted for the tram ride to Sky Terrace and a pass to Madame Tussauds.
We met our Klook guide at an MTR exit closes to the tram station. He chaperoned us to the station and briefed us on what needs to be done once we hit the peak. Clear instructions that didn’t require us to ponder much about what to do next. We followed his instructions to a T and ended up on the highest hill on Hong Kong island known as Mount Austin, and locally as The Peak. Windy and cold yet breathtaking view of the city and sunset shortly after we arrived.
It was a certainly a night to remember. In fact, it was 2 consecutive memorable nights! This called for a celebratory dinner. Hence, we trekked down to Yung Kee which wasn’t very far off the tram station. Our hearts and stomachs were so full.
Roasts and rice game strong! Hard to beat the HK folks in their fried rice renditions. Every grain is coated in grease and flavoured so well. Every mouthful leaves you wanting more. Perfection!
Causeway Bay, HK’s most up-scale shopping district was next on our agenda. We were all geared up for more walking and sightseeing. It was the perfect place to head to on our last night in HK as there’s the Wellcome supermarket that is open 24hrs which is the most perfect place to pick up edible gifts for family and friends back home. We researched quite a fair bit on the supermarkets to go to and the items to buy as gifts. A couple of supermarkets we walked into before Wellcome, were very much for expats so you don’t get local produce. I got carried away with the cool Tesco/Waitrose products manufactured just for the HK market!
As for the specifics of the edible gifts, we got bottles of XO sauce and dried scallops from Yick Cheong Ho at Tai O. I felt it was more appropriate to get 'em sauces from Tai O than from supermarkets. The XO sauces sold in the supermarkets are brands that are available back home too. At Wellcome we picked up the remaining items on our shopping list like Greatwall luncheon meat, Nissin XO instant noodles, Holland “Black and White” evaporated milk cans and mango-pomelo sago bottled drink.
We were extremely exhausted after clocking a total of 21, 519 steps for the day. Besides, all the edible gifts were weighing a tonne so it was only wise we headed back to the hotel.
We’ve experienced enough of the efficient MTR system. So, it was time to experience HK’s heritage tram system, Ding Ding. It was a nice and slow ride “home”.
Hong Kong Tramways has done a brilliant job in preserving the charm and maintaining a traditional transportation system to be functional since 1904.
On the next morning, one last hurrah before we board the airport express and fly back home...
I heart you with all of my heart, HK! Till we meet again, XO XO (pun fully intended).

Now, after nearly a year of renovations, it’s back, serving pork schnitzel, cheeseburgers, whole grilled branzino, and more.
Courtyard Tea Room and Map Room Tea Lounge (Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St., Back Bay, Boston): BPL dining (and drinking) has received an upgrade with a rebranding of the Courtyard Restaurant and the addition of a lounge serving tea-infused cocktails and snacks.

Fomu (140 Brookline Ave., Fenway, Boston): This is the fourth permanent location for the local vegan ice cream chain.

Shōjō (Logan Airport — Terminal C, East Boston): The Chinatown favorite has expanded to the airport with favorites like the shadowless fries and the Shojonator burger, as well as all-day congee, a full bar, and grab-and-go meals meant to be flight-friendly.
Tatte Bakery & Cafe (201 Washington St., Downtown Boston): The local bakery chain keeps expanding. This one makes a dozen (and it’s the second in downtown Boston).
Usushi Cafe (474 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington): Rice bowls, sushi rolls, and bubble tea.
Vaanga (102 Water St., Downtown Boston): This self-described “crazy Indian joint” comes from the Godavari team and serves samosa burgers, “desi tacos,” and “baerittos.”

Cafe Jaffa (48 Gloucester St., Back Bay, Boston): This Middle Eastern restaurant had been open for close to 30 years, serving stuffed grape leaves, falafel, and more.

After that, you should visit the Singapore Museum of Art. The nation’s first ever Art Museum is more widely known as “SAM” and houses one of the largest collections of South-East Asian modern art in the world. In the afternoon, a visit to temples such as Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is wonderful to discover Little India. Loads of tiny retail shops selling lovely saris, spices and accessories (a common long dress worn by local women, they wrap it over the body) and don’t forget to look around to see what is available. Without an authentic Indian dinner, you can not leave Little India, of course. Banana Leaf Apolo is a fantastic choice and the curry fish head is too good to refuse.
Evening – Kampong Glam
At night, it’s time to end your day at Kampong Glam to see places of significance such as the Malay Heritage Centre and the glorious Sultan Mosque on Muscat Street. Despite the constant buzz in the market area, entering the property immediately takes you on a quaint trip with it’s larger than life Grandness and symmetry. Colonial symmetry can be best spotted in the balcony attached to each room overlooking greens or the pool. The Little Island, with big plans - Singapore
What a cool and interesting little island. We arrived in Singapore in the early evening and, as one would expect, the airport was super secure (the first time in my life there was an x-ray machine as you exited the plane) and very efficient. We grabbed a taxi and headed towards Tiong Bahru, where Amy's friend Sarah and her boyfriend James live, and where we would stay for the weekend. Singaporeans are known for being extremely friendly and our driver was no different and answered all our initial questions about development - the street we rode on was under construction for a better F1 track - for the famous nighttime Spore course. My immediate thought was that the city was insanely clean - it made West London look like dirty downtown SF. (I was later told that Sing employs thousands of government workers to clean the sidewalks and streets, but honestly, I think they've just found some way to technologically eradicate dirt -- or maybe the trees get fined if they drop leaves?). Sarah and James' apartment was a traditional Singaporean art-deco style, in a neighborhood that was desparately trying to retain its small-town style in a city where skyscraper, new-build doorman buildings are the norm. I absolutely loved their simply beautiful concrete floors, they open-air kitchen, lovely balconies (2x!) and meticulously organized Asian-sized bathroom. They are both Googlers and had a bit of evening meetings with the West, certainly the downside of being an expat for an American company in the East. Amy and I left them to their meetings and headed out to dinner at Sarah's (and then our) favorite mediterranean with an Asian twist restaurant called Artichoke. After so many days of Korean, HK dim sum and then Balinese rice and noodle dishes, I was so excited for bread, olives, salads and chick peas! They had a kale "salad" - in quotes as they had partially baked / fried the kale so I'm not sure it should be allowed to retain the healthy name of a salad. After dinner we headed to the Fullerton Hotel rooftop bar, Sarah's suggestion for a gorgeous view of Fullerton Bay - and it was! Also of note, we had our first interaction with the ridiculously priced Sing cocktails - ~ SGD 24 which is equivalent to ~$17.50 - needless to say we only had one. (It seems the exorbitant prices are due to taxes - it's easier to control alcohol intake at those prices.) Despite the crazy-priced drinks, I am very happy we went as we caught Intel practicing a drone show over the harbor which was super cool. What is a drone show you ask? It's when you put lights on drones so they look like fireflies and then program tens (or hundreds in this case) to do a little aerial dance. It was the epitome of the type of thing I expected from such a high-tech city. The next day we found Tiong Bahru Bakery which is an institution, and headed for coffee and breakfast. I was extremely excited to find granola and ordered it along with a yummy latte - yep, still indulging in my Western food fix. Then we walked through the city to the Botanical Garden which houses the National Orchid Garden. We thought the city seemed very empty until we realized that, like Floridians, people who live in Sinapore are just smarter than walking around in the heat of summer. We were not that smart, but brushed off our SF weakness and embraced our FL and DC humid heritage. The gardens were lovely. Originally the land was a rubber plantation but in the early 1900s they decided to transform it into a city garden and it had grown up as such since then. As you would expect, most of the plants were tropical / rain forest and as such there were splendid colors. I was surprised to see how gorgeous the flowers of a ginger plant is - with a large, bright pink stem. Then we got to the orchids - literally thousands of them. There were beautiful orchid archways, little pagodas with orchids forming flower walls and, my favorite, little photo opp areas where there was a little stone seat that formed your own little flower throne. Besides the familiar outline, nothing was standard from size to color to petals. There was also a VIP Orchid garden, which I thought housed the rarest plants. Nope! It was literally the garden they kept orchids they named after famous people who had visited (mostly British, mostly dignataries). Princess Di had a gorgeous white orchid and William and Kate had a white and speckled pink flower. It all made me very sad that after almost 2 years of tending to my orchid in SF, I haven't been able to encourage it to bloom again -- I'm sure it has to do with the humidity, and not my black thumb. Finally we headed back - but not without some excitement - when we came across a giant lizard in our path! We swalowed our fear...and after running away from it, were told by a nearby garden keeper that they don't typically move very often. Oh, right. Later that day we headed to Marina Bay Sands which is a grand hotel and casino in the newly formed beachfront property in Sing (yep, that's code for landfill). We didn't try, but apparently you need your passport to get into the casino because if you're SIngaporean they charge you SGD 100 to enter (~$70) -- a fee to discourage gambling of course! Instead we headed to the top for more overpriced cocktails but, most importantly, an incredible view of the city. Most interesting to me was the shear number of huge cargo ships - I'm used to seeing tens waiting in SF, but there were hundreds here. Woah! It was also a great people watchig point; people who decided a bathrobe (MBS is a hotel) was suitable attire for the rooftop, family picnics and too many selfie-sticks to count. (Side note: I really hope someone is reading this 50 years from now and asks me what a selfie-stick is. Though I am really nervous to hear what may replace it.) After our view we met Sarah and James, and their friend Logan and her new golden retriever puppy (!!!) in Little India for some dinner. Although the biggest ethnic group in Sing is Chinese (75%), there is a smaller but significant Indian population and a smaller still Malay (muslim) population. We sat outside, which for a SFcian is such a pleasure, and enjoyed our food with Tiger beer. Yum.

The Daily Tulip
The Daily Tulip – International News From Around The World
Friday 31st March 2017
Good Morning Gentle Reader…. The last day of March has given us a beautiful morning with a heaven filled with Stars and other planetary bodies, all seemingly competing to get my attention…. Today Bella sniffed her way down the small side streets that make up Estepona, past the shoe repair shop, and onward past the small bakery.. and the bread being baked smelt so good!.. then past the shop that sells everything and only closes for two hours in 24.. they were cooking Sweet Potatoes and delicious doesn’t cover how good they smelt. Down past where the local council night crew were watering the multitude of Geraniums hanging on the walls of the narrow alleys.. then up past the church, with the old women waiting for the doors to be unlocked and the bells to ring calling them to pray.. and then she turned for home, she imagining the smell of her dog food and me the smell of my fresh brewed Colombian coffee….
NEW ZEALAND AND FIJI TURN AWAY 'DIRTY' SHIP OVER BARNACLES…. New Zealand has ordered a cargo ship to leave its waters and be "thoroughly cleaned" because of concerns about the marine life clinging to its hull. Divers found dense clusters of barnacles and tube worms on the DL Marigold, which arrived in Tauranga from Indonesia at the weekend, the Bay of Plenty Times reports. The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) then gave the ship 24 hours to depart. It is the first vessel to be told to leave New Zealand because of biofouling - the accumulation of aquatic organisms on ships' hulls. "The longer the vessel stayed in New Zealand, the greater chance there was for unwanted marine species to spawn or break away from the ship. So we had to act quickly," says Steve Gilbert, border clearance director at the MPI. Mr Gilbert describes it as a "severe contamination" and says the DL Marigold won't be allowed to return and unload its shipment until it has had a good clean. New Zealand has strict biosecurity laws at its border in order to protect agriculture and its unique flora and fauna. Next year, tighter rules will be implemented to protect its marine environment against biofouling, with instructions on how clean ships' hulls must be before arriving in the country. The vessel then went on to Fiji, more than 2,000km (1,300 miles) away, but the authorities there have said they will also not allow it to dock. The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) said the marine species carried on the hull could be devastating for Fiji's environment.
RUSSIAN 'FLOWER RENTALS' FOR INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY…. Russians who want to impress their social media followers can now rent huge bouquets of flowers for just long enough to snap an Instagram-worthy photo, it's reported. Pop-up services are advertising on social networks in preparation for International Women's Day on 8 March, a public holiday in Russia when women are traditionally feted with flowers and other gifts. They're offering 10 minutes with an enormous bouquet - enough time to perfect the best angle and pose - before the courier takes it back, the TJournal news website reports. One account is offering women a fleeting visit from 101 roses for 700 roubles ($12; £10). Posting selfies with huge bouquets seemingly sent by a boyfriend or secret admirer has been a trend among Russian Instagram and VKontakte social network users for some time. The 360 TV website contacted the owner of one flower-rental Instagram account, who insisted his service was real and had received many requests. He says the 10 minutes can be extended a little, but not indefinitely. "The most important thing to avoid is: 'I'm going to put some make up on and tidy up' and all that'," he says. Another account that 360 TV contacted turned out to be a joke set up to mock the new trend, and there was plenty of ridicule from Russians commenting online. "The secret of a mysterious bunch of flowers from a stranger has been EXPOSED," writes one person on Twitter. "This is the quintessence of modern values", says an Instagram user, who suggests a similar service aimed at men: "A Rolex watch, two iPhones on the table and a selfie taken in a Moscow office with a panoramic view."
EGYPT AD CAMPAIGN BACKFIRES OVER 'SPINSTER' BILLBOARDS…. An Egyptian company's attempt to tackle gender stereotypes has backfired after its latest advertising campaign was accused of reinforcing negative attitudes towards women. "Are you a spinster?!" reads one billboard promoting Sunny cooking oil, alongside a picture of a young woman looking down in resignation while several fingers point at her from the back. Other billboards in the campaign use Egyptian proverbs, including one that says: "Break a girl's rib and she will grow 24 more." In a much smaller font, the adverts encourage women to share their opinions on the stereotypes through the company's Facebook page. The marketing agency behind it told Egypt's Dream TV that the idea was to create new, positive slogans inspired by women's own stories. But the campaign's approach was swiftly criticised. "These are the kind of phrases we want to erase from our dictionary," said TV anchor Lamis al-Hadidi, adding that the wording was unacceptable even as a shock tactic to draw attention to a positive message. There was a similar reaction on social media, where many users felt the billboards would simply reinforce sexist ideas. The head of the Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights said the company should have sought expert advice on how to convey its message. "Social change has specific mechanisms," Nihad Abo al-Qomsan told Dream TV. "You cannot change a mental image by spreading it on billboards." Egypt's Consumer Protection Agency has now intervened on legal grounds and the billboards are in the process of being removed, according to the Mada Masr news website. Agency head Atef Yacoub said the adverts violated the law on inciting hatred against women and were "completely demeaning and offensive".
JORDANIANS DECRY JOURNALIST FOR HUNTING HYENA CUBS…. A journalist has created an outcry among conservationists and animal lovers in Jordan with a video of herself hunting hyena cubs. Hayam Awad's video has been viewed tens of thousands of times on Facebook and YouTube. In it, she crawls out of a den with two striped hyena cubs that are tied up, saying that she would remove them from the area to prevent cattle from being attacked by predators. Some commentators praise her courage, calling her a brave woman and "a sister of men". But many have been angered by it. Hundreds of commentators on social media condemned the act and urged the authorities to take action, the Jordan Times website reports. "Look at the extent of what people can do to gain fame and phony boasting. Leave nature alone. We have destroyed it with our ignorance," said one Twitter user. The country's Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature said Ms Awad appeared to have infringed several laws on animal protection and expected to take action against her. Striped hyenas are listed as "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and are most at risk from persecution by people because of superstition or their perceived threat to farmers. Their body parts are also sometimes used in traditional medicine.
KUWAIT CRACKS DOWN ON STATE EMPLOYEES FAKING WORK…. Kuwait is to prosecute 38 state employees for bunking off work and having their colleagues use silicone fingertips to fake their presence on a biometric attendance system. The system also requires employees to have their faces photographed - something their colleagues avoided - and the lack of pictures triggered an investigation into the issue, the Gulf News website reports. The Kuwaiti government employs about a fifth of the working population in the Gulf state and a vast majority of Kuwaitis prefer to work for the state, rather than in the private sector, which is manned mainly by non-Kuwaitis. But the government has also been trying to reform work in the state sector, where ghost employees and absenteeism have been big issues. An official report in 2011 found only half of all state employees were showing up at work. As part of a crackdown last year, the government stopped the salaries of 900 employees over absenteeism. In one case, an employee had been receiving a salary despite not showing up for work for more than 10 years. Another had been abroad for 18 months without giving their employer any explanation or reason. Not quite the record set by an Indian teacher who was finally sacked after 23 years of absence, but it looks like the Kuwaiti government still has some way to go in getting its staff to pull their fingers out.
Well Gentle Reader I hope you enjoyed our look at the news from around the world this, Friday morning…
Our Tulips today are fit to grace the screen on your computer....
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Friday 31st March 2017 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in ….. Be safe out there…
