August was definitely an odd month.

It also felt like two months. There are definitely events during the early part of the month that seemed like they belonged in July. There are even things that happened after the fifteenth that seemed of another age.

The summer/fall thing had a lot to do with that oddness, I’m guessing. We are, after all, now living in the season of Fall.

Booooooooooo. 😡

August was a busy month for Linzy. She played gigs at The Cottage in Bothell and The Rustic Cork in Mill Creek where we enjoyed a lovely evening with dear friends.

The band she's in, The Little Lies (a Fleetwood Mac tribute band) played to a packed Taste Edmonds crowd on the 11th. The other band she's in, Midnight High, debuted their new album, Swimming Lessons, at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard to a packed house and a lot of love from that audience.

The month was a busy one for me in a number of ways, the most interesting of which was exploring the use of Generative Fill in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe's AI tool that enables serious manipulation of reality. For example, we were at a Public Storage place with friends when I took out a chair, placed it in the middle of the road between two buildings, and had our friend's son sit on that chair with a big smile plastered on his face. With not terribly much effort, I replaced the background trees and sky with a sun-soaked jungle. I also replaced the road with a brighter chunky cement surface and toy dinosaurs running all about.

Seriously.

As if they were giant set pieces I'd brought down for the occasion.

Couple weeks later on a particularly bright and hot weekend, I took another photo at that Public Storage, this time with plenty of room for…

A giant public swimming pool.

No kidding. It actually looks like a public swimming pool complete with a net for water sports, barely a couple feet from our van.

I did a bunch of stuff like that across the month, figuring out this tool. Mostly illustration-y things. But those photos at Public Storage continue to capture my attention because of how strikingly real are my additions.

Kimmer, of course, continued her work from home with Ballard Psych. She's also fully gearing up for her Doctoral program at The American College of Healthcare Sciences in Portland. It's an exciting opportunity for her and, from the sidelines, I can see the experience is fixing to be pretty incredible with all the resources they're already making available to her.

For our family movie outing of the month, we all convened at The Crest Theater in Shoreline to watch "Barbie" and compare notes. It's fun to watch, definitely. It's filled with a lot of laugh out loud moments on top of a metric ton of nostalgia. It's creative as hell, great casting (did not see Rhea Perlman coming, for example), wonderful performances all around. Definitely a lot of social commentary that, in a nearly full theater, resonated with a lot of different people at different times according to their experiences... as well as lighting up universals that are obvious (of course) to everyone.

One of my favorite quiet moments of August was a comfy weekend afternoon when Kimmer 'n I drove into Ballard, grabbed some burgers at 'Lil Woody's next to The Majestic Bay Theaters, and drove further west to that spot overlooking Salmon Bay where the water empties out into Shilshole Bay. At that overlook is a patch of grass with a park bench on which we enjoyed a lovely lunch together.

Those sweet moments are not nothing, you know?

Insanely Small World Award of the month goes to Lerin Herzer who opened for Midnight High at their album release show. Lerin, it turns out, is the daughter of Linzy's Jr. High band director.

Dang.

The previous winner, by the way, is Harry Wirth III, Linzy's bandmate in The Little Lies who was also in a band called Molasses, a band in which Linzy's High School band director also played.

Speaking of Linzy's high School band director, he recently referred one of his 2023 graduates to me to talk shop. The student's about to embark on their university experience and wanted to ask questions about being a professional creative. We covered a lot of ground during our conversation and, once again, much to my chagrin, I found myself advocating what once I used to roll my eyes at whenever the Music & Video Business director at the Art Institute of Seattle would bring up his pet advice: networking.

He talked about it a lot.

And we all rolled our eyes.

Only, you know, he was right and even though I frame the advice in terms of community and chasing your career as part of a group with compatible skillsets, yeah.

I'm singing that same old song.

Networking.

So that's it for August (and summer, apparently).

Here's the wip I will probably never finish but listen me and my friend have so much fun lately creating soukoku fantasy au, and I have some stuff I wrote for it. So yes its not finished but it's been so long and I wanted to share. (Its basically love letter to Chuua cough cough)

Chuuya Nakahara was beautiful. That’s an indisputable fact, a well known one - sun is bright, water is wet and Nakahara Chuuya is beautiful in every possible sense of this word.

Dazai knew that from the very beginning of their acquaintanceship, well aware of the looks people on the streets were giving his (friend? lover?) partner. How bartenders in taverns were scanning him up and down, sending flirty looks his way and even sometimes touching his arm and hands.

Chuuya as always remained blissfully oblivious to all this attention he was given. Time and time again, he would be blunt in his responses and all the flirting would go over his head. He wouldn't get that someone is trying to win him over even if they kneeled before him and asked for his hand in marriage. That’s just part of the charm, leaving him even more desirable.

Anyways…Dazai was perfectly at peace with this knowledge, he layed in their bed at night, not able to sleep because of Chuuya’s loud snoring and insomnia, long enough to come to terms with that unquestionable fact- his partner was beautiful. Really, there is no other more fitting word to describe well enough his looks, his personality, his voice, his fiery colored hair.

Sure there are other epithets that would do nicely, like lovely or stunning, but they just felt wrong. Beautiful was such a simple word, a basic one that everyone learns at the beginning of their existence. Beautiful smile, beautiful flower, beautiful person. Beautiful-

Maybe it was because Chuuya was, in Dazai’s humble opinion, the sole definition of simple. Simple yet not. A person - a half demon, a somebody mixed, mended and bonded with some sinister being that couldn’t be described even in elfs’ ancient tongue. Nakahara Chuuya was everything and nothing at the same time. He smiled, he raged with emotions like a mixed bag of magical explosives. He laughed with his whole body, lighting up the room he was in and drawing people to him. He was a pure destructive power, raw and pumping with adrenaline and danger, he was a calamity coming down on his foes, grinning in their faces and at their demise.

Yet, he was also a quiet person, respecting Dazai’s moods, helping lost orphans, abounded on the dirty streets of slums. Chuuya was the one that helped him bandage his arm with ratty old bandages around his spell scars and weird tattoos, that even the taller man didn't know their origin. He was the one holding Dazai at night, snoring like an old tractor. When he was focused on spellworking practice his tongue poked out and he frowned, funnily changing his freckles into different shapes and constellations.

And then his eyes, gods his eyes. Beautiful cobalts and indigos, prussian blues and stormy grays, all swirling in two perfectly combined harmony. Harmony but colors fight with each other, sparkling, bustling, rumbling in silent screams that were so adamant for attention. Eyes that changed correspondly to weather. Summers with blue skies in two pools and winters with cracking night colors one could say nearly navy, heavy with dark pigments. The most expressive part in Chuuya's appearance, no matter what, always changing, liquid-like, overflowing and constantly different. Shining with life and joy, empty when times get heavier and hazy with sensual bliss. Simply beautiful. Breathtaking even, leaving Dazai gasping for air, clenching shirt over his heart, to just catch one pitiful breath.

So how can Dazai exhale now, when Chuuya is, is-

Dancing.

The brown haired male was sitting at the wooden benches that creaked with every movement, but was still surprisingly sturdy. The wood was somewhat sticky, with some substance that Dazai didn't want to know the contents of. He was enjoying his freshly brewed beer, sipping from (again) sticky mug and observing the wide fields.

The midsummer festival in the nearby town was in full swing. Villagers from their hometown, that Dazai didn't bother to learn the name of, were perfectly on time with the yearly celebration.

The fair was a gesture of thankfulness for the plentiful harvest this year, showing their gratitude to some god they stupidly believed in. On the other hand if creatures like Chuuya and him exsited, then why not gods and goddesses? He must read about it tomorrow, he will definitely convincente Chuuya to come on a library ride again. The last time they robbed a place like this, their whole house was cluttered with old books and scrolls. Speaking about his partner…

He took another sip, looking at the scene before him through his lashes. The redhead was in the middle of the big crowd, dancing and twirling around with other villagers on the spacious meadow. Year after year nothing changed, there was live music played by some more talented people. Shouts of joy mingled with loud chatter and sounds of instruments. The crowd happily danced to quick tempo, holding each other arms and hands, switching partners with quick moves and getting lost with other ones to music.

(the 1950s) 1. Consider a train, passing fields and farms; silos, barns, Holsteins and lowing tractors, corduroyed farmers sweating in the bright day, dust rising from the earth like the ribbed drone of flies purling green in the primeval daylight. Consider the sonorous horn of this hematic streak weeping brightly as it speeds on, straight as the arrow in its headlong tumble, rumbling laughingly as it sifts the dappled greens and browns of that spare landscape, tempering the endless acreage provisioning the nation—that flat, felt land sprawling alike the singing coastal cities so relentless and intractable, curmudgeon- ly and close-fisted, devouring their children in the tens of thousands with the gawping mouths of their Mohammedan skyscrapers lowering and wind-blown, piercing and lighting up the vast electric night in ensemble. Consider this myria- pod existence of steel and ossified will thunder- ing by on two slate-silver ribbons running paral- lel for countless miles, lacing the vast Midwest, stitching up the endless column of ties and oc- casional grade crossings like hemp boot-laces, stringing the fields together with gravel and barbed wire, signage, burrs and tall grasses. Consider how this train plies its route with a hale abandon, calling its rhythmic lightning up from the earth, up from the rocks and the dirt and flocks of mourning doves calling out in the redbuds and maples toward the enormous light.

2. This train may crash. I tell it to you now: this vagrant smear of maroon and vital orange that rends the fields with searing, luminous fire as it hurtles incandescently over the grassy-knolled, grain-bleeding, cornrowed Shield toward its terminus in sprawling, smoking civilization— the Twin Cities, with their endless depots and boxcars and freight yards and shunters all toil- ing away from sunup till sundown; with their murky tenements and lucent towers, shopfronts and movie-houses, dances halls and all the rest— may meet its fragrant, instant destruction on a bad section of track or a turn rushed into, top- pling car by car: crashing, careening, jerking, jittering, jackknifing, compacting, and collapsing in on itself like an accordion in subsidence, steel walls crumpling and windows shattering, roofs peeling open like sardine tins, men and women in blue, brown, and grey suits thrown about like ragdolls in total confusion, landing broken and haphazard to be crushed by overturned settees, or ripped to shreds by the wheels and steel gird- ers, blood spilling out of mangled bodies to douse the sparking flames lapping greedily at their char- ring limbs, their faces frozen in silent cries of agony or mortal terror, their eyes blank and milk- white, rolled back into their fractured skulls, and the many passengers aboard, embarking at innumerable stations, may, unknowing, be spend- ing their final breaths in the upcoming moments.

3. Consider this slick culebra sidewinding its way across the vast Prairielands at the heart of this continent, this orange, black-backed serpent braiding its way through the empty Shieldland toward the far, Western mountain ranges so indomitable, snow-capped and sky-scraping, vertiginous holy schist and gneiss thrusting their gnarled rug-folds into the blue mountain air, hog- backed and glaciated with Methuselan water. Consider this train, a city on wheels: coaches and dome cars, taverns and diners, sleepers, the mo- bile post office. Consider the inside of the obser- vation car, strikingly modern and strewn with amenities: Plush reclining seats and couches, panoramic windows, lamps and indirect lighting. Softest touches. Crisp, clean lines throughout, wood veneer and polished metal. Stylish, canny understatement. And air-conditioned, the 20th Century's saving grace of all graces. Consider its construction, steel trusses and plate glass in a gyroscopic half-bullet-head, an arch geo- metric prism 27-faceted, surrounding idle men and women in pressed suits. A bird-cage of light enshrouding in an elongated glass dome, swimming in the rays of blue afternoon sun. How shall this fabricated luxury hold its own, if the onslaught of Nature should present itself?

4. Consider the Atom Bomb, which was dropped on Hiroshima by a bomber baptized after the pilot's mother; which killed over 60,000 people instantly, vaporizing them into atomic particles that stained the stone steps and roads of the city, and crafted a crater over two miles wide, destroying buildings with fanatical passion, pul- verizing stone, concrete, wood, and tile through heat and shockwave blast; which continued to kill Hiroshima's citizens by the thousands in the days and weeks that followed, through radiation sickness, burns, and malnutrition, bringing the total death toll to 146,000; which happened also in Nagasaki three days later with a death toll of 80,000 souls, a lesser number due to the moun- tainous terrain of the locale redirecting the blast- waves of the second Bomb; and some top gener- als in the war who were against the use of these bombs, who preferred to continue using con- ventional incendiaries to carpet-bomb as they had above Tokyo, and President Truman who ordered they be used; and the young pilots who likewise were uncertain of their duty's moral standing in dropping bombs of such unbridled brutality on innocent civilians who had little to do with Imperial Nippon's military machine beyond those conscripted laborers in factories; and the new world also which spawned on that day, August 6, 1945, a world of great and terrible machines which the World's Powers hurried to stockpile in an ever-escalating arms race which we now find ourselves confronting; which hangs over our heads a wanton sword that casts our faces in sickly pall with cadaverous refracted sun- light, our eyes sunken, our hands bony and grasp- ing at shreds of blind hope in this uncertain Age—

5. Consider the engineer and the conductor in the cab of the locomotive, as it streaks across vast, thicketed Montana, en route from Chicago—with its dockyards and freighters and ore-loaders all toiling and laboring dustily away, with its spider- web of train stations and rail lines connecting our nation's farthest points together, a vast and ever-complicating machine—toward Spokane and Seattle on the Pacific coast, hauling its frail cargo of ordinary human lives in sveltest finery, its interior stylings the crème of our postwar modernité. It is their job to make sure that their train leaves safely and arrives safely, never encountering a disruption or delay. What if, through negligence or illness, they might fail in their duty, and thus through their onus their train come to grief? If so, the men and women aboard this lightning flyer, in their elegant trav- eling clothes, mothers watching over sons and daughters, fathers reading the daily paper or talking politics with their fellow men, economy passengers in their reclining chairs, spendthrifts in their private rooms, honeymooners in the Super Dome taking photos of the passing land- scapes, all of their lives would be forfeit! 150 souls injured or extinguished in a burning wreck of twisted metal cockle-shells piled ignominious on some Alpine rail line, blocking traffic in and out of the pass where they met their end. What, if such a fate befall these innocent travelers!

Consider this wry, fitful, intransigent world in which we find ourselves now inhabiting, which demands our servitude and utmost compliance in the new ways of living running rampant, pug- nacious, impersonal and impervious to all as- sault now, restructuring our lives into modes cold and strange, where at this very moment Hollywood is making blockbusters in sunny Italy borne on the backs of her poor Southern farm- ers, and Hollywood is flying her stars into Rome to appear in these Spaghetti-films and crass tab- loid papers cropping up, staffed by ungovern- able photographers and reporters, and Elvis is gyrating his hips to the youth-shod trill of a million prepubescent girls, and Rome's beauti- ful liners are sinking in Nantucket's waters, and the Iron Curtain has come down with a bang, and airplanes are the finest new way to travel, no longer the means of California's elite, and what's a few crashes to douse public opinion? The new Comet's flaws are merely contrition. America is searching within the atom for Peace, and seeking to emphasize her right to the sky, stockpiling her nuclear marvels, singing her war-cry, hawking her blue jeans for the whole world to buy, and cities are putting fluoride in their water supply, town taps burnishing teeth pearly-white, and Senator McCarthy has the whole of the nation seeing Reds in their stock- ings, and Allen Ginsberg is hawking his scurri- lous poetry, and supermarkets are proliferating, supplanting the grocers, and America will admit to no wrongdoing in dropping the Bomb, and the Marshall Plan is siring economic Miracles, and everyone wants their plastic flamingoes, as America and Russia wage proxy wars across Eurasia, bombarding their vassals, and merry the Devil who tends the flame-flowers of evil, and Kaliningrad is in ruins, and so too is Poland, and Russia has outlawed jazz yet again, and every man fancies himself a poet, and the whole world is sliding into intractable panic, children huddling under desks and fearing the sirens an- nouncing the imminent bombs overhead spiral- ing, alike a clumsy old albatross careening onto the deck of a sultry destroyer hove to and bran- dished in territorial disputes—How does one keep hope in this godless new age? How can't one madden at the news overflowing in these rank, algal days from our many newspapers? And what can be done if one drops the bomb on the heads of those riding this automaton stri- ation, as it cascades volubly over her tempered steel ribbons? What if this this train should yet wreck? What then? Who shall mourn these inno- cents caught in the crosshairs of Fate's ready rifle- men aiming so deadly at the forefront of history?

Coda. The train does not crash. The engineer and con- ductors attend to their duties, and no harm bursts in the air above. All is well on this autumn day.

GBV 40

It's a popular wink-wink-nod-nod joke among the diehard Guided By Voices fanbase that dedicated GBV fandom is #notacult (but kind of a cult). You'd think that Robert Pollard and company were in on the joke, considering they decided to celebrate 40 years of the band's existence at a venue built by a 14-group Masonic Temple Association, which is a true story and not the name of the band's new single. As a full disclosure converted GBV head who has in the past attended Heedfest, the band's long-running fan weekend chock full of cover sets and Miller Lites, this first weekend in September absolutely felt like an extension of it, a full-on celebration of all things Guided By Voices. Celebrity superfan Paddy Considine came from overseas with his son Joe, playing a covers set at the Yellow Cab Tavern in Dayton's Oregon District. During the encore of GBV's first night at the Dayton Masonic Center, Scott Marshall (of Chavez fame), Matador Records Director of Digital, A&R Jake Whitener, and GBV manager David Newgarden presented Pollard with a "Most Valuable Lead Singer" trophy. Even Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis, normally reserved, gave the crowd a half-hearted "G! B! V!" chant during the band's opening set. Miller Lites at the venue (along with most other beer) cost a measly $6 per can, a bargain in 2023. During the second night, Pollard took a moment to thank the alcohol distributor, who may or may not have been stocking his personal cooler full of beer bottles and the once-again passed around Jose Cuervo. What's for sure is those bottles were fueling Pollard's high-kicks, 2022 busted knee be damned. Always different, always the same: It was The Fall. Is it now Guided By Voices?

Yes, the same spirit pervades GBV: In a recent beginner's guide to the band, Uproxx critic Steven Hyden described them as having "one foot in the bowling alley, and another foot in the art gallery," whether that's the band's early R.E.M.-indebted material, lo-fi golden era, Aughts arena rock attempts, or the current, arguably most prolific late-career lineup. The quartet of guitarists Doug Gillard and Bobby Bare Jr., bassist Mark Shue, and drummer Kevin March is certainly the most formidable group of instrumentalists to ever back Pollard, and his songwriting on this lineup's albums has notably embraced the proggier, more epic side of his forebears. During the band's anniversary concerts, they paid curatorial attention to these newfound favorites just as much as the "Motor Away" and "Tractor Rape Chain"s: the tempo-changing "Alex Bell", bopping "Dance of Gurus", and even absurdist poem "Razor Bug", delivered a capella by Pollard and Shue. Pollard also admitted how the band tackles the old imperfections, joking that March made sure to play all the original studio version "fuck-ups" from "My Impression Now".

But GBV also had work to do. This year so far, they've released two albums, La La Land and live-to-tape gem Welshpool Frillies, and purportedly (shocker) have two more in the can. Only this band could garner this much crowd enthusiasm by opening a four-decade celebration with the first three songs from their latest album, but when they're as good as the jagged "Meet the Star", cascading "Cruisers' Cross", and Cheap Trick-meets-Crazy Horse ripper "Romeo Surgeon", it doesn't really matter, does it? The sets in general were treated like a normal GBV marathon, featuring but not overwhelmingly dominated by their most recent output. Gillard's trademark guitars chimed through the sludgy "Seedling", while La La Land's "Queen of Spaces" offered a necessarily languid breather between "Everybody Thinks I'm a Raincloud (When I'm Not Looking)" and "Motor Away". To my pleasure, on night two, the band played La La Land closer "Pockets", a song about exactly what you think, that nonetheless exemplifies Pollard's ethos: As long as you have a sense of wonder and a penchant for songwriting, you can maintain constant creativity. Songwriting can be a daily exercise.

Built to Spill

Throughout the celebration, Pollard expressed thanks for past and present incarnations of GBV (joking that the current youngins help him up the stairs) as well as the other bands joining the celebration. The inspired lineup was a mix of 90's contemporaries (Dinosaur Jr,, Built to Spill), Dayton connections (the birthplace of Heartless Bastards' Erika Wennerstrom and Dino J.'s Lou Barlow), and new indie rock royalty (Kiwi Jr., Wednesday). Dinosaur Jr., Marshalls stacked upon Marshalls, treated the crowd to eternity-long fuzz jams heavy on their earliest albums, from "Gargoyle" and their faithful "Just Like Heaven" cover to "The Lung" and "Freak Scene". The next night, Built to Spill also offered a set with plenty of guitar solos and extended intros and codas, respectively bookending the set on the slow-burning "Stop The Show" and eternal "Carry The Zero". As for their (sort-of) cover, they chose The Halo Benders' "Virginia Reel Around the Fountain" and not Heartless Bastards' "The Mountain" since, well, the real thing had played right before them.

Heartless Bastards

Heartless Bastards are not a band you'd normally associate with 90's indie rock, though I wouldn't have expected Built to Spill bassist Melanie Radford to sing Wennerstrom's part so convincingly last time I saw BTS. Wennestrom and Martsch came out with Heartless Bastards on night two for "The Mountain", but I saw where the Texas-via-Ohio rockers fit in with the band lineup even more on other songs. Yes, their brand of blues-rock is unique, not quite punchy, certainly eschewing raw psychedelia for grooves or high and lonesome country. But while Wennerstrom's throaty singing led the hazy "Photograph", the song's instrumental outro with gorgeous guitar work snuggled beside Wednesday and Built to Spill. And the chugging back catalog highlight "Gray" came across almost like a GBV ripper with keyboards.

Wednesday

And then there were the up and comers. Toronto's Kiwi Jr. combined the instrumental concision of GBV with the storytelling of a band like Wednesday. They took from their three very good records, concentrating on their Sub Pop albums Cooler Returns and Chopper in their brief set, contextualizing "Maid Marian's Toast" and "The Sound of Music" (about insurance fraud and Christopher Plummer), easing the crowd into a night of clatter. Wednesday, meanwhile, was the unabashed non-GBV highlight of the entire festival, the band that converted the unfamiliar and justified those of us who have hyped them up. Their quintessential country-gaze was on full display from the moment they queued up the buzz saws of "Hot Rotten Grass Smell". "Chosen to Deserve" was the bonafide ne'er-do-well anthem, the song of the summer for the bad kids, Xandy Chelmis absolutely slaying on pedal steel. Of course, lead vocalist Karly Hartzman's drawl-cum-yodel was the perfect medium to communicate stories of people dying in Planet Fitness parking lots, getting electrocuted by your own house, and toothless men on oxygen tanks smoking cigarettes. But it was "Bull Believer" that absolutely brought the house down, tears in the eyes of people who had never heard the song before. In a rare move on a normally apolitical GBV stage, Hartzman decried the nadirs of the nation, from the return of student loan payments to the policing of Black and Brown and LGBTQ+ bodies. She invited the crowd to scream along in anger as she beckoned "Finish him!" Perhaps that's what even implored Pollard to, out of nowhere between "Twilight Campfire" and "To Keep An Area", declare, "We live in a shitty country...Everything is crooked as fuck!" It was a small moment, perhaps inconsequential, but one that really hammered down for me that after all these years, Pollard's done what he's always done: change.
