Get the Right Supplies

Before you get to work, you want to make sure you have everything you will need already. The supplies you will need include:

Prepare Your Camry

No matter what year your Toyota Camry is, the process is more or less the same across the board. The first thing you will need to do is lift up your Camry with the car jack. Place the jack stands underneath it to hold it in place. From there, you can drive your vehicle up onto the wheel ramps. You will need to brace the backs of the front tires so that the entire car does not go rolling.

From there, you can open the hood and find the oil filter cap. Remove the cap as well as the dipstick. You will need to collect the new filter, oil drip pan and closed-end wrench. Some cleaning cloths will also help. You are ready to slide underneath the car to locate the filter and drain plug.

Change the Oil

Using your closed-end wrench, you can remove the drain plug. You want to pull the plug away quickly to let the oil drain smoothly into the pan. This should take about 15 minutes. This is a good time to inspect the threads of the drain plug to ensure it is still in good condition. You can then replace the drain plug and turn your attention toward the filter. With the filter wrench, you can remove the old filter in order to install the new one.

Next, coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with the new oil. You are now ready to install a new filter. From there, you are ready to pour in the new oil. You can find out what type of oil is best for your specific year of Camry in the owner’s manual. Search online to find the best prices for synthetic oil so that you can do this job without spending a ton of money. Turn on your car for a minute to allow the oil pressure to build. Inspect the dipstick to ensure there is enough oil. If there is not, you can add more until it is good.

"Being a Buddhist is more than performing rituals and not doing bad things," Wangdi says, and without a blink of an eye, his right hand sharply turns the steering wheel to avoid a loose shoulder above a steep escarpment. There are countless of them on the slopes of the Himalayas.

I have been to Bhutan many times but I would never dare to drive here. For the narrow asphalt roads, unpaved mountain trails, crazy climbs and descents, and curves twisted like a snake around a hill, from which a huge truck always rushes at the end, a simple driving school is not enough. Here you need to have at least a PhD in driving!

"It's great that sometimes I can drive even at the gear four. A few years ago, this was impossible. Now, especially on the road between the airport in Paro and Thimphu (the capital), cars in the opposite directions can pass without slowing down and at some sections, you can drive around a hundred (km/h)!“

What a nice indicator of the progress in Bhutan …

As a UNICEF driver, he has to drive slowly, carefully and respect all the rules. He also has to wear a formal outfit, which means a „gho“ for the men - a knee-length robe tied at the waist and high knee socks. In his leisure time, however, Wangdi enjoys to get things going. Nobody would recognize him in his motorbike leather suit,. “I drove all India on this motorbike. I even got to the Mount Everest base camp,” he proudly shows the photos.

We move to the next photo where Wangdi shoots from a bow. Archery is a national sport in Bhutan. The target is 150 meters away. I can hardly see it but the Bhutanese men (women do not shoot, which is perhaps the only cultural restriction for women which I have encountered in Bhutan) are quite capable at hitting the target from this looong distance. "You have to estimate the direction, wind and all the conditions. I'm really good, just look at how many trophies I have," he points with a smile at the multicolored bands on the traditional Sunday gho.

Wangdi is simply a guy who knows what to do in any situation and always picks up the slacks whenever needed: if something goes wrong, he can fix it, he knows where to inflate the football which I brought all the way from Prague to the child monks at the Chorten Nyingpo Monastery, he knows how to chat with a policeman so that we can film at the local market, he even convinces the head lama to let us inside a temple where we arrive after the closing time. He always knows where the best shot is and as a voluntary camera assistant, he has already helped to shoot at least four documentaries.

And when I was once impatient in the car that we drag up the hill like a snail and was tempted to give Wangdi some good advice, a big Indian truck rushed out from the bend in the opposite direction. If we went just a little faster, it would have swept us from the road and this blog would have no one to write. He´s even able to see behind the corner!

 For those interested, he is not available: o) His wife has a small shop with the prayer flags and religious items in Thimphu. Buddhism is taken very seriously by the whole family. When there is a flaw on the prayer flags that are printed in India, they transcribe them at home in collaboration with the local monks so that the prayer is spelled correctly. It is not possible to pray with a typo!

Wangdi´s life was supposed to go in a completely different direction. “Actually, I was born in a monastery. My mother was a nun and my father supervised them as a monk. But something went wrong,” he smiles. “When I was born, they had, of course, to leave the monastery. But my father did not give up the hope that they would have a monk in the family so he sent me to the monastery when I was in the second grade. It was a tough place for a small boy like me, it was cold, we didn't even have shoes, no hygiene at all. I remember once I prayed and my back was itching. When I scratched, there were hundreds of big white worms under my skin. Then I got sick and my parents took me home,” he recalls. “I am glad that, thanks to our work, today's little monks live quite differently. They have water, hygiene, they can play and have more normal childhood.”

With his three brothers and four sisters, he considered to start a family business in a small hotel. But when they realized that they would have to prepare meat for the tourists, they didn´t pursue the idea. “So many lost lives, that's not right. I prefer small profits from the wife´s shop to spoiling my karma for many next lives,” he thinks aloud.

For me, Wangdi is a great colleague that I have known for over fifteen years.

"Working at UNICEF saved my life," he says.

"No, seriously," he adds, noting my sceptical face. “Before I joined in 1998, I had to take a medical exam. It discovered that I had a serious heart defect. I had to undergo a heart surgery in India. I would never go to a doctor for a preventive check-up myself, there was no reason why, I was young. But if I didn't find out then, I'd probably not be here anymore. ” As the senior driver, he manages the others, supervises gasoline consumption, checks the road records and technical condition of the vehicles.You don't need to be a doctor or a teacher to help. There are many other ways in any profession.

I remember a situation when ten years ago I came to Bhutan  with a Czech journalist who immediately at the airport began to grumble that UNICEF drives a Toyota Landcruiser. Hm, how much does such a car cost, who can afford it, he commented. The next day, before the dawn, we travelled to an isolated monastery where UNICEF built the water supply system, toilets and washrooms. It rained all night so when we hit the road, there was mud everywhere. On the asphalt road, it was still quite ok but when we turned off the main road, we were literally slipping uphill. Wangdi kept the crew in a good mood and joked that as long as there was no red mud, everything was fine. And then, of course, we drove into the red mud! Wangdi stopped talking, just concentrating on the road, and minute after minute, for long two hours, each of us hypnotized the slopes down the road, trying to identify a spot where we could possibly survive a car crash.

When we finally reached the monastery, the journalist fell out of the car all white and green and said: Look, I have to apologize. You can't really drive this country in a skoda. Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay’s Welcome Reception in Tokyo, Japan

Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay is here in Japan on a four-day official visit. The Welcome Reception organized by Honorary Consuls & Bhutan Japan Friendship Association held at Imperial Hotel, Tokyo. The room filled with many Japanese participants ( but a handful of Bhutanese) from all walks of life and some traveled as far as Kyoto and Nagoya precisely to be part of this event- Welcome Prime Minister, Aum and Delegations to Japan. It did not take too long before the speech from Hon. Consulate General and applauses continued strongly, smiles and exchange of conversations more audible, and imagine a room filled with many people eager and anxious to hear from our Prime Minister, interact with and of course as usual the photo op opportunity with our Guests.

Dasho Tshering Tobgay along with his translater Prof. Pema took the podium and as we witnessed a pin drop silence in the room, Dasho smiled and gracefully started his speech by greetings to all and thanking Japanese Diplomats in the room, Hon. Consuls, Bhutan Japan Friendship Association and everyone who made it to this event.

His first and foremost remarks highlighting the special friendship and ties between Japan and Bhutan mostly nurtured over time because of a close relationship between our Monarchs and Emperor House.

His message of renewing and further strengthening the relationship between two countries as unequivocal, his appreciation and gratitude for Japan’s assistance thus far in the identified development areas which to a larger extent has been very satisfactory and made a huge progress and helped people, exchange between people to people enhanced resulting to an increase in Japanese Tourists to Bhutan, appreciation to organization such as JICA and reminded the audience that still Bhutan has a long way to go to becoming a developed nation, we have to rely on our core Partners such as Japan to assist in future development areas , Dasho invites Japanese companies to invest in Bhutan, and a sense of optimism that Bhutanese can and should learn from Japanese, their skills, work ethics and so forth. The program concluded with the toast in honor of our Prime Minister and the cheers of ‘ Kampai’ continued.

The festive event did not end quickly as more interactions amongst the audience continues, some sharing their nostalgic feeling how great the experience to be in Bhutan, some with unique stories of their connection to Bhutan, some with business ideas floating around to support Bhutan and eventually the occasion went on way after the guests have left the room.

A small group of Japanese and Bhutanese decided not to conclude this gathering without a rounds of beer and Yakitori ( Japanese type of skewered and roasted chicken) at a local Izakaya.

On a footnote, as a Representative from Bhutanese Community of Japan, I had quick conversation with Foreign Minister Lyonpo Damcho Dorji and Ambassador Major Gen V.Namgyel about how we wish to create a Community Group here and establish a point of contact.

We can either be a spectator and observe, or we can be a participant and be involved, let’s choose the later.
