Growing up in Scottsdale, Arizona should have and would have been a peaceful life if it hadn't been for Alejandra and Mariana’s parents' chaotic and sometimes toxic relationship. The Solano’s had emigrated from Monterrey, Mexico in their early twenties with the hopes of making it big in The Land of Opportunities but had subsequently fallen short in every possible way. They’d gotten in their own way with their mutual obsession for one another leading to too many squabbles and jealousies that had stolen them from progression. Stuck in their ways, then having not one but eventually two daughters left them little time for education and programs that would give them the leg up that they’d needed. Instead they were each stuck working multiple jobs to support a small family.
Although Scottsdale was a relatively large city it had always felt stuffy, perhaps even a little close minded for the youngest Solano. Alejandra was adventurous and took the freedoms being born first generation American had offered her. The first time she looked at other girls in a way the Catholic upbringing and most of Scottsdale wouldn’t really approve of, Ale learned a hard lesson about being herself and staying true to that. But also that ideals didn’t often equate to how society operated. So, as a teenager her struggles with who she was and how she was expected to be had put drugs in her system as a means to cope. She’d take off with her older sister, Mariana, and friends to Las Vegas where they’d party and get up to no good. Like plenty of teenagers just trying to figure life out.
It was the love affair with another girl that eventually sent Alejandra running from her hometown and to the much more liberal Southern California. Nothing hurt more than finding love for the first time but also being forced to keep it a secret and act as though the one you love was only just a friend in the gaze of others. The move and rush away from Arizona was also in pursuit of a dream. Since Ale was little she’d been drawn to photography and took every class she could that public schools offered and even entered competitions, sometimes even winning a few local ones. At 18, the nighttime gig of working as a stripper afforded Ale to attend film school so that she was able to learn filmography on top of the work she’d done to become a professional photographer. The dream was to do both, to be behind the camera in movies and television while also featuring on the glossy pages of important print. If she could have her photos framed on walls of galleries or people’s homes then she would believe she’d made it.
Life as a young adult in Los Angeles was wild. It was thrilling and heartbreaking. Mostly, it was everything Ale needed because not only did she get to soar and find her dream in a career but the mistakes along the way taught her a lot. No matter how many times she got burned by love it only seemed to free the young woman further. After film school Ale was able to pick up work on a few shows meant for the silver screen or streaming. Her career as a professional photographer filled out a beautiful portfolio and both were abled her to step away from her nighttime dancing gig. One of her favorite things to shoot were weddings, not only because of the money she was able to make but being a part of them even as a background piece gave Ale hope that she’d one day be that happy in-love.
As it normally went, when life was going too good and the high was at its biggest peak, that was when the most dramatic drop took place. Just over eighteen months ago, Mariana seemed to disappear. Texts and calls went unanswered and unreturned, not just for hours or days, which was unusual for the sisters, but for weeks. When it continued on for months, Ale really began to dive into the whereabouts of her sister and became determined to find her and figure out what went wrong. The last location that Ale had been aware of Mari being was Providence Peak, Colorado, so she packed up her life and made the move after dropping everything in Southern California. Most of her initial search and poking around town led to nothing, no answers, but something eerie was in its place. The realization that she would be in town for some time, at least until she was pointed in another direction, Ale found herself an apartment downtown. She found a wedding planner with a brilliant booming business and took on a job as a wedding photographer. In the year that followed, she’d grown closer to her boss and made some connections through town but hadn’t gotten anywhere near a resolution when it came to Mariana Solano.

Americans Are Drinking More During The Pandemic (NPR) When the pandemic began spreading across the U.S. in March, stores, restaurants and schools closed down. But liquor stores in many parts of the U.S. were deemed essential and stayed open. Alcohol sales have ticked up during the pandemic, so maybe it’s a good time to ask yourself: Are you drinking more than you’d like to be? R. Lorraine Collins, a psychologist at the University of Buffalo, recommends asking yourself, “Are you keeping alcohol as ... a special beverage for limited situations, or are you engaging in alcohol use across the board?” A break from alcohol can lead to a range of outcomes. As we’ve reported, a 2016 British study of people who participated in a monthlong “Dry January” break, found that 82% said they felt a sense of achievement. “Better sleep” was cited by 62%, and 49% said they lost some weight. Maybe you hike farther, have better conversations or get better sleep. Notice if your life feels richer to you. If we’re stuck at home for now, why not give it a try? What do you have to lose?
‘Do as I say’: Anger as some politicians ignore virus rules (AP) Denver’s mayor flies to Mississippi to spend Thanksgiving with his family—after urging others to stay home. He later says he was thinking with “my heart and not my head.” A Pennsylvania mayor bans indoor dining, then eats at a restaurant in Maryland. The governor of Rhode Island is photographed at an indoor wine event as her state faces the nation’s second-highest virus rate. While people weigh whether it’s safe to go to work or the grocery store, the mayor of Austin, Texas, heads to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on a private jet after hosting a wedding for 20. California’s governor dines at a swanky French restaurant with lobbyists, none wearing masks, a day after San Francisco’s mayor was there for a birthday party. Both had recently imposed tough rules on restaurants, shops and activities to slow the spread of the virus. To the public’s chagrin, some of America’s political leaders have been caught preaching one thing on the coronavirus and practicing another. Sure, politicians have long been called out for hypocrisy. But during a pandemic that’s forced millions into seclusion and left many without paychecks, such actions can feel like a personal insult—reinforcing the idea “that some people just don’t have to follow the rules while the rest of us do,” says Rita Kirk, a professor of communications at Southern Methodist University. Pandemic-era hypocrisy has only deepened the polarization in a time already marked by division, emboldening those who doubt the seriousness of the virus and dividing people’s responses based on political affiliations.
Hacked networks will need to be burned ‘down to the ground’ (AP) It’s going to take months to kick elite hackers widely believed to be Russian out of the U.S. government networks they have been quietly rifling through since as far back as March in Washington’s worst cyberespionage failure on record. Experts say there simply are not enough skilled threat-hunting teams to duly identify all the government and private-sector systems that may have been hacked. FireEye, the cybersecurity company that discovered the intrusion into U.S. agencies and was among the victims, has already tallied dozens of casualties. It’s racing to identify more. “We have a serious problem. We don’t know what networks they are in, how deep they are, what access they have, what tools they left,” said Bruce Schneier, a prominent security expert and Harvard fellow. Many federal workers—and others in the private sector—must presume that unclassified networks are teeming with spies. Agencies will be more inclined to conduct sensitive government business on Signal, WhatsApp and other encrypted smartphone apps. The only way to be sure a network is clean is “to burn it down to the ground and rebuild it,” Schneier said.
College students recruited as teachers to keep schools open (AP) As the coronavirus sidelines huge numbers of educators, school districts around the country are aggressively recruiting substitute teachers, offering bonuses and waiving certification requirements in order to keep classrooms open. Coming to the rescue in many cases are college students who are themselves learning online or home for extended winter breaks. In Indiana, the 4,400-student Greenfield-Central school district about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Indianapolis made a plea for help as its substitute pool shrank. “I said, ‘If you’ve got a student who’s in college, maybe they’d like to work even a two-month thing for us—which would be a stopgap, no doubt—but it will help us a whole, whole bunch,” said Scott Kern, the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation director of human resources. Over a dozen college students answered the call including his own daughter, 19-year-old Grace Kern, who is studying medical imaging technology at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. She has been working in elementary school classrooms, helping students as teachers offer instruction remotely via a screen inside the room.
An Ex-Governor Is Gunned Down, Punctuating a Deadly Year for Mexico (NYT) The former governor of the state of Jalisco was gunned down early Friday while vacationing in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, the authorities said, a brazen killing that further illustrated the government’s struggles to rein in the deadly violence that has surged across Mexico over the past five years. The killing of the ex-governor, Aristóteles Sandoval, who was shot in the back inside a restaurant restroom, is one of the highest-profile political killings in Mexico in recent memory, security experts said. Mr. Sandoval was killed just hours before President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his cabinet delivered a grim update on the nation’s security situation during a news conference. More than 31,000 murders were recorded in Mexico this year as of November, the latest month for which government statistics are available, a figure roughly on pace with 2019. But homicides have nearly doubled over the past five years.
Bosnian city of Mostar gets a vote (AP) Irma Baralija is looking forward to Sunday, when she intends to vote and hopes to win her race as the southern Bosnian city of Mostar holds its first local election in 12 years. To make that vote possible in her hometown, the 36-year-old Baralija had to sue Bosnia in the European Court of Human Rights for letting a stalemate between two major nationalist political parties prevent her, along about 100,000 other Mostar residents, from voting or running in a municipal election for over a decade. By winning in court in October 2019, Baralija believes she has “busted the myth (that nationalist parties) have been feeding to us, that an individual cannot move things forward, that we matter only as members of our ethnic groups.” Left without fully functioning institutions, Mostar—one of the impoverished Balkan country’s main tourist destinations—has seen its infrastructure crumble, trash repeatedly pile up on its streets and hazardous waste and wastewater treatment sludge dumped in its only landfill, which was supposed to be for non-hazardous waste.
India’s virus cases cross 10 million as new infections dip (AP) India’s confirmed coronavirus cases have crossed 10 million with new infections dipping to their lowest levels in three months, as the country prepares for a massive COVID-19 vaccination in the new year. Dr. Randeep Guleria, a government health expert, said India is keeping its fingers crossed as the cases tend to increase in winter months. India is home to some of the world’s biggest vaccine-makers and there are five vaccine candidates under different phases of trial in the country.
Israel’s top-secret Mossad looks to recruit via Netflix, Hulu and Apple TV (Washington Post) After decades in the shadows, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, the Mossad, has been getting a lot of airtime, both on the news and in popular TV thrillers. In real life, details of operations attributed to Israel are in the open like never before, including the theft two years ago of a trove of nuclear secrets from inside Iran, last summer’s drive-by killing of al-Qaeda’s No. 2 in Tehran and the assassination last month of Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. And on the screen, streaming hits like Apple TV Plus’s “Tehran,” Netflix’s “The Spy” and Hulu’s “False Flag” have starred the Mossad as a cold, ruthless and efficient machine. Far from squirming, the once-supersecret agency has welcomed the exposure, former spies say. The Mossad needs recruits. Military veterans who might have once made their career in national service now leave to work for lucrative start-ups, or found their own. Israeli companies Waze, Wix, Viber and others were started by intelligence veterans. In response, Yossi Cohen, the Mossad’s director since 2016 and a close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has embarked on a hiring spree, increased the agency’s number of sabotage operations and enlarged its budget by billions of shekels. The Mossad’s recruitment drive includes a heightened social media presence and a calculated trickle of unconfirmed information about its exploits. And former spies say the agency is quietly embracing a slew of TV shows and movies that could do for the agency what “Top Gun” famously did for naval recruitment: make a life in the organization seem cool again.
Chaos and jubilation as freed Nigerian schoolboys reunite with family (Reuters) Parents sobbed, mobbed their children in hugs and even kissed the ground in gratitude on Friday as they reunited with scores of schoolboys who had been kidnapped a week earlier in northwest Nigeria. Hundreds of adults jostled to find their offspring among the 344 dusty and dazed looking children who had arrived by bus in Katsina state on Friday morning. Those who succeeded cheered and grabbed their children, but scores more were still waiting by early evening. “I feel like God has granted me paradise because I am so happy,” said an ebullient Hamza Kankara after she found her son, Lawal, in the crowd. Another man knelt and kissed the ground, thanking God for the return of his young son, before clutching the boy and sobbing.

As a portion of LA's busiest wedding DJ's, we've seen a lot of bloopers, and we would say, the strongest couples not just have an extraordinary disposition toward the unforeseen, yet in addition are furnished with strategies to guarantee any disasters don't escape hand. To enable you to ride out harsh spots in your big day, we've assembled a rundown of tips for how to deal with wedding accidents.
Imagine a scenario where: It's falling down in buckets on my open air wedding.
While a stormy wedding day isn't excessively likely in LA, each savvy couple has a Plan B, even in radiant California. It's a smart thought to lease a tent for an outside wedding—at any rate, it'll give your visitors an obscure spot to chill. You may even need mutiple; for example, in the event that you have live performers, they may require a secured territory to play.
Another thought? In the event that the conjecture isn't looking extraordinary, incorporate a reasonable umbrella on every visitor's seat as a cute gift. On the off chance that it downpours, everybody has an individual haven, and your picture taker will get some truly cool Mary Poppins-esque shots.
Most importantly, it is key for you as the lady of the hour and man of the hour to stay cheery about a blustery function, and your visitor will stick to this same pattern. Since there's literally nothing you can do to change the climate, simply unwind, have a decent giggle about it, and appreciate the magnificence of the compelling force of nature—that is the thing that the couples highlighted in this NY Times article did, and the wet climate wound up being an affectionate memory for them. (Clue: read the entire article for progressively extraordinary thoughts for what to do in the event that it downpours at your wedding).
Consider the possibility that: I have a closet breakdown on the move floor.

Any move floor disasters can likewise be moderated by an ace wedding DJ, who will realize exactly what to state—and play by occupy the group—in most any circumstance.
So in the event that you or a visitor does to be sure have a humiliating minute, basically grin, snicker, and proceed onward. Almost certainly, everybody will understand, and the less dramatization you make out of it, the more rapidly individuals will proceed onward to the following thing, similar to a line dance or eating cake!
Imagine a scenario in which: I stumble on my dress when I stroll down the passageway.
For the most part, the most ideal approach to approach any incident is with cleverness—and that is never more valid than with regards to a slip or outing. Dismiss it and continue. For somewhat viewpoint, look at this story: one couple's picture taker truly fell through the ice, and he continued shooting the entire time. It's a quite sure thing that any lurches you take will be inconsequential in correlation.
Consider the possibility that: I wake up with seasonal influenza on my big day.
Becoming ill on your big day is the most exceedingly terrible! While you can't absolutely kill the opportunity that you'll contract the muck, you can take measures to forestall ailment and guarantee your insusceptible framework is working in best structure for your wedding and special first night.

In the event that you do wake up on your big day feeling off, ensure you have some OTC cures in your purse—ibuprofen, Pepto, decongestant, and so forth.— to give some help after all other options have been exhausted should you need it.
Imagine a scenario where: my playlist goes haywire and the chicken move stalls out on rehash.
On the off chance that one thing can cut down the vibe of a wedding gathering, it's terrible music, or an absence of music totally. Luckily, this accident is practically 100% avoidable. Skirt the DIY playlist and contract an accomplished, proficient DJ to deal with your music. Additionally, ensure the DJ you pick has their own demonstrated reinforcement framework if there should arise an occurrence of crisis for one less thing to stress over.

What makes Gallifrey One so special? What makes it the hot ticket for Whovians and DWeeks? We are going to give you a general overview about what Gallifrey One is, what you can expect there and tips on how to get your hands on these hard to get tickets!
Gallifrey One is the world’s largest and longest-running annual Doctor Who fan convention. It is a fully non-profit event founded in 1989 by active fans in local Los Angeles science fiction fandom. Gallifrey One boasts some of the best Doctor Who celebrity guests while still maintaining its small con feel. This convention is completely fan run. It features one of kind panels, guest from all walks of science fiction and the non fiction science community, not just the Doctor Who universe. Taking place every February over Presidents’ Day Weekend at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel, this con is an experience not to be missed.
2018 Highlights:
Gally (as it is often called) is one of those cons that have a jammed packed schedule. Programming goes from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm. And even after there are after parties, screenings, dances, masquerades, karaoke events and so much more. There is probably way more that went on at the 2018 event than I could possibly list. I recommend checking out the 2018 Gallifrey One Wrap Up on the convention website. But for now, here are some attendee photos of some of the guest highlights from the con!
The Great Steven Moffat. Showrunner for #DoctorWho, #Sherlock and soon #Dracula. Still highly passionate about his work and at times combative. Struggling mightily against those who might accuse him of writing the same female characters over and over again and promoting a false image of sexism against the first Doctor. An extremely entertaining panel. #whovian #scifi #timelord #tardis #gallifreyone #thedoctor #gally1

Beware when #DavidBradley shows up to your event especially if it’s a wedding. Here at #gallifreyone talking about his experience portraying the first #DoctorWho. No thoughts on #WalderFrey and #GameOfThrones. Spoke about his early days acting and meeting the family of #WillaimHartnell before he portrayed him. Outside the Con:
The convention is held at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel. It is just steps from LAX international airport. There are plenty of hotels in the area, as well as a variety of places to eat within walking distance.
Child Friendly:
This is probably the most child friendly convention I have come across. There is a ton of children’s programming available as well as babysitting available. Children programming does fill up quickly, so I suggest keeping signing up as soon as the programming is announced. There is a courtyard just outside of the convention floor that gives children some room to run around and wind down a bit. There are plenty of food options available at the convention as well as in the nearby neighborhoods. I was able to find food options for even the pickiest of eaters.
Pros of this Con:
There is so much great programming that there really is something for everyone. There are guest from the audio series, from the comic book creators, there are even guests from other fandoms. If you are interested in cosplay, there are panels on cosplay as well. There are writing workshops, discussion groups, ribbon trading, meet ups of all types. There is a bar and lounge area on the main floor of the hotel that is lovingly referred to as “Lobby Con”. At this 2018 Convention Steven Moffat and Sylvester McCoy were both spotted in the lobby with fans, interacting and hanging out with fans. The con takes place in the same hotel that many of the guest stay in, so seeing the guest walk around is very common. They are not guarded by security like they are at larger conventions. This gives the convention a more intimate feeling and allows for experiences that would not normally happen at other conventions. One of the benefits of a convention that is specifically geared towards Doctor Who fans is that everyone at the convention is a Doctor Who fan. You are in a safe place to express your total love for Doctor Who. It creates a very welcoming and open environment. You are all there to celebrate the thing that you all have in common. The thing that you all love.

Cons of this Con:
The Vendor/Dealer’s room at Gallifrey One is pretty small compared to most Southern California conventions. It boast only a few rows of vendors. It seems fine for a convention that holds less than 4,000 attendees and despite being small you can still find some truly unique merchandise that you wont find anywhere else, but it would be nice to see an artist alley with a nice variety of Doctor Who art for sale. The con takes place during a holiday weekend and it takes place at the same time as a gaming con in a neighboring hotel. This can make it difficult and pricey to find both room accommodations and parking. If you plan to stay at the hotel from Thursday until Sunday night, be prepared to spend upwards of $800 for the 4 days, 3 night stay.
A fullsize volunteer owned TARDIS on display at the end of the Dealers Room.
Rubber Toe Replica Booth at Gallifrey One 2018
Cosplay:
The Cosplay is pretty top notch at Gallifrey One. The fun thing about cosplay at this convention as opposed to other pop culture conventions, is that because it all centers around one fandom, you find some of the most clever, creative and even obscure cosplays. At any given time you can fins cosplayers portraying characters from all walks of the Doctor Who universe. You can find cosplays from Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, Class and even the Big Finish Audio Series (yes, they even cosplay from audio cover art).
Con Costs:
$110.00 Adult Full Weekend $50.00 Teen Full Weekend (Ages 12-16) $20.00 Child Full Weekend (Ages 3-11) Note that the above prices do not include a small EventBrite processing fee, which will be added to each order ($6.22 per adult ticket, less for the others).
Gallifrey One only sells weekend badges. Single day passes are no available.
Parking for locals:
Parking can be reserved in advance (AND YOU SHOULD). Parking ranges anywhere from $15 a day to $35 a day. General airport parking lots are available within walking distance of the convention. Arriving early is highly recommened.
Hotel Accommodations:
Hotel rooms at the Marriott are in high demand and are filled up almost immediately after reservations open. There are many hotels within walking distance near by. *See YouTube Video Below*
Pro-tip:
We recommend turning on post notifications for the Gallifrey One Twitter and Facebook accounts so that you stay up to date on hotel announcements, ticket sales, guest announcements and programming information. If you are trying to get tickets or hotel room accommodations on the day they go live, don’t give up on the first sold out screen. try again for the first 20 minutes. Many times the systems just need to refresh and catch up, and you may be able to score the tickets/room that you need.
Overall Impression: It can probably best be explained in this quote from veteran Con-goer and Temple of Geek photographer, Nathaniel Peinado, “Gally isn’t just a convention experience. It’s a family. A yearly reunion, if you will. A chance to see your closest friends that come from distant places, and an opportunity to make new ones. It’s a place where everyone and everything is celebrated and it doesn’t matter if you’re there in an old TARDIS t-shirt or a screen accurate costume. The amount of joy and love you receive from this convention will leave you wishing the next one wasn’t another year away. It’s definitely an experience that makes you believe things really are bigger on the inside.”
My babies ❤

Is California spiking the football before the game is truly over?
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s declaration that the coronavirus outbreak could largely be over in his state by June sent local leaders, public health experts, doctors and business owners scrambling for thoughtful answers to that question.
Some questioned the wisdom of of the state’s sudden shift into the recovery fast lane, given the significant gains still needed to attain vaccination goals and the gradually slowing declines in caseload growth. Others, however, were confident that this was the appropriate decision for a state eager to break free of the fiercely debated coronavirus restrictions and the economic turmoil triggered by a bitter year of pandemic.

Soon after Newsom declared on Tuesday, April 6, that the state’s color-coded recovery tiers would be erased come June 15 — a mere 10 weeks from now and five days before summer’s dawn — Los Angeles County Health Director Barbara Ferrer held her own press conference Wednesday, hosting a session that replaced Newsom’s grin with reminders grim.
The governor spoke of “resuming everyday activities,” wide-open businesses and “common-sense risk-reduction measures.” In response, Ferrer raised the specter of the “double mutant,” potential super-spreaders and the enduring sting of winter’s deadly surge.

“I don’t think anybody knows exactly what reopening looks like on June 15, except that with a lot more people vaccinated many restrictions on some of our activities will no longer be necessary,” Ferrer said.
Ferrer’s words were not stripped of optimism, however. Ferrer said L.A. County would follow the state’s guidelines, including the continuation of a mask mandate and social distancing, especially in schools and other settings with children. And she said she sincerely hopes the statistics — and the vaccine supply — will boost the governor’s buoyant vision.
“I think it’s completely possible if we move forward with this collective will to take care of each other from now until the time we get more and more people vaccinated,” Ferrer said Wednesday. “That’s what gives us that extra level of protection that allows us to get beyond the blueprint.”

In Orange County, experts and officials aligned optimistically — but with their own caveats.
“I do believe that we’ll be in a much better place June 15 than we are even today,” said UC Irvine epidemiologist Andrew Noymer.
But eight weeks still feels like a long ways away to the Irvine professor.
“These things can kind of turn around,” Noymer said, noting that Michigan has seen an unnerving uptick in cases in the past month.
Restaurant, brewery and distillery owners received news that they will be able to fully open by June 15. They’re making plans to get operations a bit more back to normal. (Photo by Mark Rightmire, Orange County Register/SCNG)
Dr. Roger Lewis, who leads the team at the L.A. County Department of Health Services that forecasts hospitalization demand based on coronavirus case rates, said that local modelling shows June 15 as a reasonable target for complete reopening given what they are seeing in the local models.
“Our models show that the number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 is steadily going down and in fact we’re seeing some of the people hospitalized with positive COVID-19 are hospitalized for other reasons.”
Key numbers have now returned to levels last seen in March 2020 before the first surge in patients in April.
As of Wednesday, 572 people with COVID-19 were admitted to L.A. County hospitals with 136 in intensive care units. In Orange County, 114 were hospitalized with 29 in ICU. In Riverside, 106 were in hospitals with 20 in ICU. And in San Bernardino 103 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals with 25 in ICU.
Adjusted coronavirus case rates this week in L.A. County were 3.1 per 100,000 people. In Orange County it was 3.0 per 100,000. In Riverside it was 3.5 per 100,000. And in San Bernardino it was 3.4 per 100,000. To advance to the yellow tier, adjusted case rates must fall below 2.0 per 100,000 people.
Still, Ferrer cautioned that rates of declines have levelled off significantly. And she worried that more gatherings in the days ahead could kickstart increases in those pivotal categories.
At the top of mind for Lewis and many others are the growing number of variants, including a “double mutant” recently found by Stanford University researchers that could be especially virulent.
“While we have essentially informally good news locally, we would be foolish not to be paying very close attention to what’s happening in Michigan and other states,” Lewis said.
National public health officials have been watching increases in caseloads in Florida, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, too.
“We don’t live in a bubble here in L.A. County,” Ferrer said. “In order for us to hold on to the gains we’ve made, we have to be more diligent not less diligent.”
The June 15 deadline is ultimately contingent on two factors outlined by state health officials Tuesday: Case rates remaining low and vaccine rates increasing.
Statewide, more than 20 million vaccine doses have now been administered, at least 4 million of them in the state’s hardest-hit communities based on the Healthy Places Index.
For Dr. Lawrence Sher, an allergist-immunologist who leads the Palos Verdes Medical Group, said assessing the vaccine stats make him believe June 15 could be premature.
“Everybody is, of course, weary and looking forward to reopening. And the state is looking forward to that for multiple reasons,” he said.

But he added: “Until we get children and adolescents vaccinated as well, we still can have problems down the road. We are still being a little more aggressive than most of us would like them to be.”
A key factor: Southern California’s millions of minors.
So far, the Pfizer vaccine is approved for residents 16 and older. Both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson require recipients be at least 18. Drug makers, however, are currently in trials with children as young as six months old.
Sher expects it will take another few months for children 12 and older to be approved. Children younger may require six months or more, he said.
“They (drug companies) are all trying to go younger and younger,” Sher said. “They just have to get the approval and inoculate as many people as possible to prevent spread and mutations of the variants.”
The ultimate question: What constitutes herd immunity? Experts do not agree, Sher said.
Most place it anywhere from 70 to 80% vaccinated — or higher. It really depends, he said, on how effective the current vaccines prove to be at warding off variants. (A hint: So far they have fared pretty well, including against the U.K. variant, Sher said.)

Moving into the new green tier on June 15 “depends on us,” said Brandon Brown, a UC Riverside associate professor with a background in epidemiology.
“We need high vaccination rates, people practicing masking and physical distancing, we need to do better with (hard-to-reach) populations, and importantly keeping a close watch on the data to track the number of hospitalizations and cases including the new variants,” he wrote by email.
Brown worried about the summer break bringing increased travel and more people easing up on prevention measures, some of which became habits back when caseloads were soaring.
“Masking may need to be our ‘new normal,’ even after June 15,” Brown said.
Much progress has been made in getting vaccines into the field, with about 40% of the state’s adults getting at least one dose, said Bernadette Boden-Albala, dean of UC Irvine’s School of Public Health.
But she’d like to see that number at least doubled before people go back to a pre-pandemic “normal.”
Some of the groups already eligible for the vaccine — seniors, people with underlying health conditions and public-facing workers — were highly motivated to get inoculated because they face higher risks from infection, Boden-Albala said.
Fear of death can be a powerful motivator. It generally doesn’t resonate, however, among younger residents.
“What is concerning is that we don’t really understand the behavior in terms of vaccine uptake of young people,” she said
Also: “Vaccine hesitancy is going to rear its ugly head,” she added.
Noymer and Boden-Albala both worried that the end of the state’s tier system will make it harder to fine-tune the response based on what’s happening in each county.
However, Richard Carpiano, a public health scientist and medical sociologist at UC Riverside, doesn’t foresee the same problems.
Eliminating state tiers throws decision-making to the counties, which could decide to keep more things closed if their numbers go in the wrong direction, Carpiano said.
“The trick is, to make that work, there needs to be more detail around what the markers will be, what to be aiming for,” he said.

But real recovery for business owners, jolted by the gut-punch delivered by months of restrictive health orders and the subsequent shutdowns, still seems far off.
“I celebrate that this hurdle to our business recovering will be behind us soon, but this is not the only hurdle,” Kao said. “Whether a business is able to fully recover will depend on a lot more factors than whether the government says we can. Going back to the way we were is going to take time.”
Kiran Savage-Sangwan, executive director of the California Pan Ethnic Health Network, which represents the interests of minorities, said their biggest concern was maintaining a clear focus on equity as the vaccine is rolled out.
While progress has been made on the unsettling gaps detected in the initial months, revealing that communities of color were bearing an inequitable burden, Savage-Sangwan said more needs to be done to reach those hardest him.
“The larger question is who has access to the vaccine supply and is it equitably distributed,” she said.
“The state has made great strides in that area but when we look at the data it’s clear we have to do more.”
Staff writers Jeff Horseman and Ryan Carter contributed to this report.
