The Arcade in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, is a Victorian-era structure of two nine-story buildings, joined by a five-story arcade with a glass skylight spanning over 300 feet, along the four balconies.  Erected in 1890, at a cost of $867,000, the Arcade opened on Memorial Day, May 30, 1890, and is identified as one of the earliest indoor shopping arcades in the United States. The Arcade was modified in 1939, remodeling the Euclid Avenue entrance and adding some structural support. The Arcade was built in 1890 by Detroit Bridge Co., run by Stephen V. Harkness.   Designed by John Eisenmann and George H. Smith, the Arcade is one of the few remaining arcades of its kind in the United States. Modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II located in Milan, Italy, the Arcade comprises two nine-story towers with a skylight, 100 feet high, made of 1,800 panes of glass spanning over 300 feet .

     The construction was financed by John D. Rockefeller, Stephen V. Harkness, Marcus Hanna, Charles F. Brush. and several other wealthy Clevelanders of the day. The Arcade is a cross between a lighted court and a commercial shopping street. The building is a complex of three structures: two nine-story office buildings facing out to Euclid and Superior Avenues, connected via the five-story iron-and-glass-enclosed arcade. The Richardsonian arched entrance of Hummelstown brownstone along Superior Avenue is original, but the Euclid Avenue front was remodeled in 1939 by the firm of Walker and Weeks. The level of the Superior Avenue entrance is about 12 feet lower than the Euclid entrance, so that there are two bottom arcade floors, joined by staircases at each end. Since Euclid and Superior avenues are not parallel, a passage leads, at a 23-degree angle, off the Euclid entrance to a rotunda at the southern end of the Arcade. 

     The arcade itself is a 300-foot-long covered light court, ringed by four levels of balconies, which step back above the Euclid Avenue level. The vertical lines of the columns, rising nearly 100 feet to the glass roof, create a spacious domed interior.   The Arcade's design inspired a similar shopping arcade in Atlanta called the Peachtree Arcade, which was constructed in the 1910s.  The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 20, 1973.   It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1975.  In 2001, the Hyatt corporation redeveloped the Arcade into Cleveland's first Hyatt Regency hotel. The Hyatt Regency occupies the two towers and the top three floors of the atrium area. The two lower floors of the atrium area remain open to the public with retail merchants and a food court. In addition, the Hyatt's lobby and offices are located near the Superior Avenue entrance. That same year, the skylight was also replaced.

Variable air volume (VAV) is a type of heating, ventilating, and/or air-conditioning (HVAC) system. Unlike constant air volume (CAV) systems, which supply a constant airflow at a variable temperature, VAV systems vary the airflow at a constant temperature. The advantages of VAV systems over constant-volume systems include more precise temperature control, reduced compressor wear, lower energy consumption by system fans, less fan noise, and additional passive dehumidification.(1)

Simple VAV systems(edit)

The simplest VAV system incorporates one supply duct that, when in cooling mode, distributes supply air at a constant temperature of approximately 55 °F (13 °C). Because the supply air temperature is constant, the air flow rate must vary to meet the rising and falling heat gains or losses within the thermal zone served.

Even a simple VAV system has several advantages over a CAV system. One is more precise temperature control. To meet a space cooling load, a CAV unit operates the fan and compressor at full capacity until the temperature drops to a specified limit, and then the compressor turns off. This on/off cycling causes the temperature to fluctuate above and below the temperature setpoint. In a single-zone VAV unit, the fan speed varies depending on the actual space temperature and the temperature setpoint, while the compressor modulates the refrigerant flow to maintain a constant supply air temperature. The result is more precise space temperature control.

Another advantage is energy savings and reduced wear. VAV fan control, especially with modern electronic variable-speed drives, reduces the energy consumed by fans, which can be a substantial part of the total cooling energy requirements of a building. Modulating control of the compressor also reduces wear and delivers further energy savings.

A final advantage is increased dehumidification. Because VAV air flow is reduced under part-load conditions, air is exposed to cooling coils for a longer time. More moisture condenses on the coils, dehumidifying the air. Thus, although a constant-volume and a single-zone VAV unit maintain the same room temperature, the VAV unit provides more passive dehumidification and more comfortable space conditions.

Multiple-zone VAV systems(edit)

The air blower's flow rate is variable. For a single VAV air handler that serves multiple thermal zones, the flow rate to each zone must be varied as well.

A VAV terminal unit,(2) often called a VAV box, is the zone-level flow control device. It is basically a calibrated air damper with an automatic actuator. The VAV terminal unit is connected to either a local or a central control system. Historically, pneumatic control was commonplace, but electronic direct digital control systems are popular especially for mid- to large-size applications. Hybrid control, for example having pneumatic actuators with digital data collection, is popular as well.(3)

Control of the system's fan capacity is critical in VAV systems. Without proper and rapid flow rate control, the system's ductwork, or its sealing, can easily be damaged by overpressurization. In the cooling mode of operation, as the temperature in the space is satisfied, a VAV box closes to limit the flow of cool air into the space. As the temperature increases in the space, the box opens to bring the temperature back down. The fan maintains a constant static pressure in the discharge duct regardless of the position of the VAV box. Therefore, as the boxes closes, the fan slows down or restricts the amount of air going into the supply duct. As the boxes open, the fan speeds up and allows more air flow into the duct, maintaining a constant static pressure.

Radon Basics

One of the challenges for VAV systems is providing adequate temperature control for multiple zones with different environmental conditions, such as an office on the glass perimeter of a building vs. an interior office down the hall. Dual duct systems provide cool air in one duct and warm air in a second duct to provide an appropriate temperature of mixed supply air for any zone. An extra duct, however, is cumbersome and expensive. Reheating the air from a single duct, using electric or hot water heating, is often a more cost-effective solution.(4)

Neglecting regular maintenance, like cleaning your vehicle's glass, can result in windshield and auto glass replacements and repairs. However, more importantly, your windshield is a key component of your automobile's safety system, so keeping it in good condition is essential for the safety of you and other drivers on the road. Keeping your auto glass well maintained improves performance, safety, and it makes your vehicle look nice! This article will examine some ways to protect your windshield and the appropriate way of cleaning it.

Park Your Vehicle Inside

Our first suggestion for protecting your windshield is to park your vehicle inside whenever possible. Doing so will keep it in an environment with a consistent temperature and stop inclement weather and extensive UV exposure from damaging it. Sudden shifts in temperature can cause existing damage, like cracks and chips, to expand and become worse.

Switch Out Your Windshield Wipers

Another way to protect your windshield is to replace your windshield wipers every six to twelve months. Over time windshield wipers degrade and accumulate debris. Whenever this happens, the debris and uneven wear on the wiper become abrasive to the glass. Once the wipers are used in this condition, they scratch the glass and allow contaminants to collect inside the scratches. By changing out your wipers routinely, you will extend the life of your windshield and decrease scratching.

Washing Your Windshield and Auto Glass

Regularly cleaning your windshield prolongs its life and increases its performance. It's also a good time to inspect your windshield for chips and cracks that need to be repaired. Do not use your windshield sprayers and wipers for routine cleaning. They are designed to work in a pinch. The best way to clean your windshield is to use the correct tools, products, and some elbow grease. If you want to know if your windshield needs cleaning, you can start by rubbing your fingers across it. If the glass does not feel smooth, then it is time to roll up your sleeves.

Before you start, make certain that you have the suggested tools. You will want: microfiber towels, ammonia-free auto glass cleaner, and newspaper or towels. Microfiber towels are recommended because they are less likely to damage the glass and they can be washed and reused. The automotive glass cleaner is also recommended because it is safe for tinted glass. Furthermore, a clay bar and cleaner are helpful any time you're dealing with extremely dirty glass, but they are optional.

The best time to clean your windshield is shortly after you wash your vehicle. This gets the majority of debris off and will help you get a streak-free results. After it's been washed, move it inside or to a shady place. Keeping the glass cool will help prevent the glass cleaner from drying when applied and causing spots and streaks.

Once the vehicle is inside a garage or under shade, allow the glass to cool for a moment. While it's cooling, take the time to prep your vehicle by placing newspaper or towels over the dashboard. This creates a barrier and protects the dash from the glass cleaner. Now, the glass should not be too hot to touch. That being said, if it is, then you should wait a couple more minutes.

Next, you will need your ammonia-free glass cleaner and microfiber towels. Spray the glass cleaner directly on the inside surface of the glass and wipe vertically, then reapply the cleaning product and wipe horizontally. Do your best to stay steady and even when wiping. You should keep on wiping until the surface is totally dry.

After you have cleaned the windshield on the interior, repeat the prior step on the exterior surface of the glass. If the exterior glass still feels gritty after cleaning it, you should use a clay bar and cleaner. It will remove the grime and make the glass smooth. Afterward, reapply the cleaner, wipe, and dry. At this point, you should be finished and have a streak-free windshield!

Complete with a mansion, Georgia’s second minority-owned production studio debuts in Decatur

East of Atlanta, Aztec Warrior Studios is the state’s first Latino-owned TV, film, and music facility, leaders say

Georgia’s first Latino-owned production studio has opened its doors in Decatur.

Just beyond the point where Interstate 285 meets Covington Highway, Aztec Warrior Studios—also the state’s second minority-owned production studio, following Tyler Perry’s—now offers facilities for making movies, TV, music, and more, following a ribbon-cutting last week.

Founded by a collective of commercial real estate investors and entertainment industry professionals, the studio features more than 20,000 square feet of production space of all sorts.

What officials are calling the “biggest attraction” is the eye-catching mansion at the front of the property.

It’s also “the perfect backdrop for your next event,” says a press release from the studio.

A roundabout driveway brings people into the Agape Way address, and—in typical mansion fashion—visitors are greeted with an ornate water fountain with a statue.

Inside, “the mansion is jaw-dropping with grand chandeliers, white marble floors, elegant crown molding, and a massive winding staircase with a baby Grand Piano on the top landing,” per the release.

Built in 1993, the mansion appears to have once served as a religious building. It shares the street with the Assembly of God Tabernacle and Great Faith Ministries Atlanta.

DeKalb County property records indicate the property is worth about $1.65 million.

Beyond the antebellum-style scenes are offices, post-production facilities, and a sizable soundstage with an elevated viewing gallery.

“It has a wing dedicated to audio production that is perfect for music producers,” officials noted. Behind the venue stands “a broadcasting tower so that TV shows can broadcast from the facility live or prerecorded.”

A soundstage with 27-foot ceilings designed “for whisper-quiet sound.” In the background is a 33-person viewing gallery, used for fashion shows and other events.
