Global AgriInno Challenge 2021 aims to harness innovation, entrepreneurship and digital technologies to address challenges related to the transformation from rural villages into ‘Digital Villages’that contribute to the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life, while leaving no one behind.

b) sharing the latest information, knowledge, and best practices in rural digital transformation innovations, digital technologies, and business models;
c) building an enabling environment through Public-Private Partnerships and co-creation opportunities with diverse participants, practitioners, and experts;
d) engaging and empowering young agripreneurs and innovators to tackle development challenges through FAO and partners’ global networks with continuous support during and after the innovation challenge;

Optimizing walking routes to keep you in the sun or shade
Keith Ma was an Insight Fellow in Summer 2018. He is currently a data engineer at Tellus labs where he works on understanding and modeling the global crop supply. Keith is excited by the intersection of geospatial data and machine learning and the challenges unique to that area. Prior to Insight, he completed his Ph.D. in geology and geophysics at Yale.
Sun and shade have a strong impact on how many of us pick a route to the places we want to go. For me personally, direct sun is the devil himself. The point of Parasol is to leverage knowledge of the environment to help people make these decisions. This is analogous to how we use popular navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze to navigate around traffic: we want to avoid congested routes and the apps use extra information about current conditions to help us do so. The Parasol navigation app knows more about where it is sunny and shady than you do, and can help you stick to whichever is your favorite.
I built Parasol over four weeks as an independent project with Insight Data Science. I cannot recommend this fellowship highly enough. If you are a PhD considering a career in data science, apply to Insight. If you are a company looking for newly minted data scientists, become a partner.

TL;DR
Parasol uses high-resolution elevation data to simulate sunshine and constructs routes that keep users in the sun or shade, whichever they prefer. You can try out the app at parasol.allnans.com. Easier still, check out the demo video below:
The demo starts by finding the shortest-distance path between the Esplanade and South Station in Boston. Next, I turn on the sun/shade layer, with light colors indicating sun and dark colors indicating shade. Then, I use the sun/shade preference slider to update the route to prefer shade, and show that the resulting route is 19% longer than the shortest path and has 13% less sun. Shifting the slider to prefer sun yields a different route that is 5% longer than the shortest path with 18% more sun. Finally, I change the time-of-day and show a new best-sunny-route that is 2% longer and has 25% more sun.
The approach behind Parasol is surprisingly straightforward. First, I built a high-resolution elevation model. Next, I simulated sun/shade using the position of the sun for a given date and time to illuminate the elevation grid. Then, I computed a cost function that incorporates sun/shade as well as distance for each segment of the transportation network. Finally, I applied Dijkstra’s algorithm to compute the shortest path given this custom cost. All of this is wrapped up into a friendly web application.
To make this a little easier to follow, the figure below shows a high-level schematic of the inputs and outputs of the system. Later sections provide some insight into how I designed and implemented each part of the system.

Gridded Elevation from LiDAR
To run a decent shade model, I needed a decent elevation model. My goal was to build two elevation grids: one for the “upper surface” including buildings, trees, etc., and one for a “lower surface” that excludes these things. For my purposes, the sun shines on the upper surface, and the people walk on the lower.
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scan data is a near perfect data source for my application. The raw data consists of a “point cloud”, meaning a long list of (x, y, z, …) points, with a <1 meter spacing. Even better, each laser shot can have multiple returns, so that it is possible to resolve both tree top canopy and bare ground elevation.
The first challenge was separating the point cloud into upper and lower subsets (i.e., tree-tops and bare ground). There are a few well-established methods for doing so, but it turns out the LiDAR data I used were pre-classified by NOAA. As these classifications were quite good, I just used them straight out of the box.
Now I had two point clouds, but still no grids. LiDAR data are not on a nice regular grid, but rather scattered about with irregular spacing. Because there is some noise in the measured elevation, I needed to smooth (not interpolate) the raw data and then resample on a regular grid. This is trickier than one might expect, especially because features with sharp edges (e.g. buildings) are important to the sun/shade simulation. I used a nearest-neighbor median filter, which returns the median value of the k-nearest neighbors for each point on the output grid. This has the nice effect of both smoothing the noise in the data and preserving sharp edges. Median filters are common for image de-noising, but I had to implement my own to work with scattered input data. If interested, you can find the code for my nearest-neighbor median filter here — it is quite simple!

Simulating Sunshine
To simulate sun and shade, I use the GRASS GIS module r.sun to compute insolation on the upper surface grid for a given date and time. This simulation includes ray casting for direct sun, as well as diffuse illumination from scattered light. It is not fast, nor is it easy to use, but it gets the job done.

I also did a quick qualitative validation in which I compared simulated shadows to the observed shadows in high-resolution aerial photography (from the NAIP program).
Comparison of observed shadows in NAIP aerial imagery and simulated shadows created by Parasol. Comparisons like this served as a qualitative ���smell test” to make sure the solar simulation worked acceptably well.
To account for shade cast by trees, I set the insolation at all pixels where the upper surface is higher than the lower surface (i.e., where the user will be walking below some object) and set it to the minimum observed insolation in the scene. A more sophisticated approach might account for sunlight angling in under the trees, or for the changing leaf cover in each season, but these features were sadly out of scope for this project.
Sun and Shade Cost
Dijkstra’s algorithm (which I used) finds minimum cost routes between nodes on a weighted graph. The weights are essentially a cost incurred for traversing between two nodes. An obvious choice for the cost in a navigation application is the distance between the nodes. For Parasol, I needed a new cost function that included sun/shade exposure in addition to distance. The key requirements for the cost function were:
Incorporate both insolation and distance
Allow for routes that prefer sun and well as routes that prefer shade
Have a minimal number of free parameters (ideally one) so that it is easy for users to indicate their preference
Be non-negative
It turns out I was able to write the cost as a simple weighted average of a “sun cost” and a “shade cost”:
cost = β⋅sun_cost + (1−β)⋅shade_cost
The weighting parameter (β) reflects a user’s preference for sun or shade. It ranges from 0 (total preference for shade) to 1 (total preference for sun).
The “sun cost” term is the path integral of the insolation along each segment of the OpenStreetMaps transportation network. This is related to the amount of sun you would absorb by walking a given segment. The beautiful thing about integrating over the length of each segment is that the cost implicitly includes the length of the segment — it is the average insolation times the segment length.
It turns out there is a problem with this super simple approach: insolation is on the order of 1000 W/m², whereas route lengths are on the order of 10 m, which means sun is much more important than distance in the total cost. From experience, I can say that this leads to some very crazy routes. To fix this problem, I rescaled the insolation to the range 0 to 1 prior to computing the cost. This amounts to giving distance and insolation equal weights in the cost function. In practice, this generates sane routes so I stopped here, but it would be very interesting to explore what scaling would lead to an “optimal” cost function. Letting I be the normalized insolation, the sun cost is:

Moving on, the “shade cost” term is a bit weirder than the “sun cost”. It is the path integral of the reduction in insolation due to shade along each segment in the transportation network. This is related to the amount of sun avoided by the shade cast on each segment. I computed the shade cost as the difference between the maximum insolation and the observed insolation. Since the insolation is normalized (has a maximum value of 1), this amounts to:

Here is the fun part: if the user sets β=0.5, then we recover the shortest-length path! Working this through shows that the cost in this case is just the path integral of a constant, which is proportional to the length.

Voila! A single-parameter cost function that allows users to choose sunny or shady routes and still cares about distance.
Routing with a Sun/Shade Cost
The heavy lifting for computing the route is handled by the wonderful PostgreSQL extension, pgRouting. This extension computes least-cost routes using a variety of algorithms (I used Dijkstra) and allows the user to specify the cost as a function of the columns in an OpenStreetMap database. All I had to do was to store the computed sun and shade cost for each segment of the transport network in my database, choose the right column to use based on the time of day, and apply my simple cost equation.
Web App
I won’t go into the details, but I set up the web app using Python and Flask to host an API with endpoints for generating routes, etc., used Leaflet with a few wonderful extensions to build an interactive map, and hosted the sun/shade simulation images using Geoserver.
Next Steps
My biggest hope for Parasol is that the idea catches some traction and gets picked up and integrated into one (or more!) of the many wonderful navigation apps out there in the wild. A few things I had hoped to tackle but ran out of time for are:
Use sidewalks rather than roads for routing. While OpenStreetMaps includes special tags for sidewalks, coverage is woefully incomplete. This is problematic because Parasol is not able to advise users to take advantage of streets where one sidewalk is shady. A few ways to go about this might be to (1) try to synthesize a sidewalk graph, or (2) adjust the sun and shade costs to follow the best side of each street.
Adjust shade to account for seasonal tree cover. It is definitely possible to identify trees from the LiDAR data, and the shade cast by these trees could be adjusted based on the season. Even better, it is probably possible to use satellite imagery to drive the timing of the change.
Better ray casting! I used GRASS GIS, which worked fine, but it would likely be better to take advantage of the wonderful machinery that drives modern computer graphics instead. An additional benefit would be that the LiDAR could be converted to a proper 3D model, rather than an elevation grid, and the ray casting could handle the edges of obstructing objects better.

Chatham Lodging Trust (NYSE: CLDT) today announced that it has acquired the 219-suite Embassy Suites by Hilton in Springfield, Virginia for $68 million, or approximately $310,000 per suite. Chatham funded the purchase through available cash from its recently completed 5,000,000 share offering that raised approximately $109 million dollars. With this acquisition, Chatham has invested approximately 81 percent of the proceeds from the share offering. “This is a superior-quality hotel that has been ranked the top hotel within the Embassy Suites brand each of the last two years,” said Jeffrey H. Fisher, Chatham’s chief executive officer and president. “Acquired in an off-market transaction, the Embassy Suites by Hilton Springfield has the best location among its competition with superior access to the primary demand generators in a market where new development is difficult and little new supply is on the horizon. It generates an approximate 10 percent RevPAR premium to our existing properties while lowering our portfolio’s average age and needs no capex for several years.” Opened in August 2013, the LEED-certified hotel features steel and concrete construction with a soaring lobby space. Once upon a time, it was simple. The database was a modern Bob Cratchit putting data in tables made up of very straight columns filled with one row per entry. Long, endless rectangles of information stretching on into the future. The relational database has been the bedrock of modern computing. The vast majority of websites are just a bunch of CSS lipstick painted on top of SQL. Everything that makes us special is just another row in the big table of life. The love affair with the big matrix of bits is slowly fading as developers are realizing that not everything fits into a simple table. And because developers are smart and obsessive about finding solutions for every need, they’ve started creating new and better places to store the information. The last few years have brought an explosion in other mechanisms for squirreling away our data. Are these wonderful new options still databases? Does the data have to fit into some big matrix to be a database? Some like to use the word “data store” to differentiate the modern mechanisms because the word “database” is too tightly linked in our minds to the old tabular structure. We’ll leave that up to the philosophers. Data goes in and answers come out. Here are eight ways that the database is being reinvented in new shapes and forms. GPU computing Once upon a time, video cards were built to draw elaborate scenes for kids’ games, but now the so-called graphics processing units are doing plenty of non-graphical processing. Searching through data is just one of the best non-graphical operations for them to tackle. And why not? Plowing through endless piles of data looking for a match is an inherently parallel operation made up of lots of rudimentary jobs (testing equality) repeated millions of times. So it is pretty simple to turn the job over to the thousands of processors in the GPU. The biggest wins aren’t in answering each query (which are obviously many times faster) but in the preparation work, because there is little need for preprocessing. Many databases save time by maintaining an index, which is effectively a precomputed result of every possible search. If this index is corrupted or destroyed, rebuilding it can take hours, days, or maybe even months. If the data can fit inside a GPU’s memory, though, you can usually get by without the index. If the data is changing quickly and most of the index is never used, then skipping the preprocessing can be quite effective. Check out MapD, Kinetica, Brytlyt, and others to see whether your data and searches can be accelerated. Non-volatile memory (NVRAM) Programmers who cut their teeth 50 years ago had it easy. They didn’t have to juggle data between the RAM and the disk with elaborate protocols for ensuring consistency. That’s because the memory back then was iron core and wasn’t erased when the power was turned off. Those good times may be back again soon because chip manufacturers are talking about replacing RAM with NVRAM or non-volatile memory. This is a big game changer for database programmers because one of their biggest challenges (and even their greatest reason for living) is disappearing. Some suggest that the databases can get much faster because the transaction semantics can be simpler. Others float the idea of building the recovery log after the data is written to the media, not before. No one knows how the dust will settle. Will people still use a database at all if they don’t need a permanent record? Or will the searching and indexing keep them coming back? All of the algorithms and all of the architectures are up for rethinking. We’ll know the best way to use NVRAM in a decade or so. Scale-out SQL When the NoSQL movement began, one of the big features was the ability to spread your data storage across multiple nodes. NoSQL databases like Cassandra and MongoDB made it seem like getting all of the nice features of large-scale storage meant abandoning the comfortable world of SQL. In reality, there doesn’t need to be a tradeoff. While the earliest experiments in large-scale databases were easier to create because they left behind all of the SQL baggage, there’s no reason why SQL can’t work well across multiple machines running at huge scale. Indeed, companies like Oracle have been doing it for years. The newest large-scale databases let you use all of your SQL knowledge and convenience with a set of data spread out across a big cluster. CockroachDB, for instance, offers a standard SQL query engine that accesses data replicated in multiple nodes, all with ACID guarantees. Yes, you’ll pay for some of this belt-and-suspender support for data consistency, but perhaps less than you expected. If guaranteed consistency is important to your work, start by checking out stacks like CockroachDB, Google Cloud Spanner, Clustrix, Azure SQL, and NuoDB. Geospatial databases Traditional databases are built for one-dimensional data sets, not the two dimensional coordinates from geography. You can fake it and use a standard database to accomplish basic tasks with geographic coordinates. If you stick latitude and longitude in separate columns, it’s not hard to search for rows that fall within a box defined by a range of latitudes and longitudes. But once you want to go beyond this basic box, standard SQL queries just don’t cut it. Geospatial databases add a few extra functions that make searching, sorting, and intersecting much easier in two-dimensional space. Spatial indices, for instance, usually work by adding a grid on top of the coordinate space to make it much faster to search for rows that are adjacent in two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds. These indices make it possible to write queries with operations like “contain,” “overlap,” and even “touch” with sets that are defined by polygons. All of this makes reasoning about the real world that much more efficient. Check out Neo4j Spatial, GeoMesa, MapD, and PostGIS for some good places to begin. Graph databases Tables are a good repository for many data structures but they don't do a great job of modeling one big, emerging data structure that has powered the last 10 years of Internet evolution: the network. As the so-called “social graph” explodes, we’re filling our computer with more and more nodes with links between them. And the connections between the nodes are often more important than the data in them. Sure, storing and retrieving one link between one pair of nodes is easy to do in a classic relational database, but more complicated queries start to get impossible. Is Bob two or three hops away from Chris in the friendship network? Is Mary dating the ex of one of her friends? Graph databases make queries like this easier to run. There is no endless fetching from tables because the query knows how look in the neighborhood specified by the links. Tools like Neo4J, OrientDB, and DataStax are just a few of the options that now can barely be counted on two hands and two feet. They have their own query languages too. Cloud databases One of the biggest changes lies in how we buy database software. In the past, we bought our own machines and signed licensing deals to run the software on our machines. Now the cloud companies are offering services that store blobs of data off somewhere that we can’t see or touch. They just say the data will be there when we want it. #ITPro #SoftwareDeveloper The advantages are obvious. There is no need to maintain the server or the room holding it. There is no need to worry about licensing or configuration or installing patches. Someone else deals with all of those headaches. The solution is often cheaper too — especially if you don’t have a ton of data to store. The services usually charge by the byte. But the dangers, if there are any, are lying in the shadows. Does someone else have access to the data? Is the server protected from power surges, lightning storms, or floods? Is the data backed up to a trustworthy offsite location? You’ve got to trust the cloud provider on everything. Major cloud service providers Google, Microsoft, and Amazon offer a long list of database services. These days Oracle, MongoDB, and DataStax also make their databases available in the cloud. Artificial intelligence (AI) Some say that artificial intelligence is just a term for the latest generation of research that is just rolling out of the labs and into production. If so, there are a number of new products and solutions adorned with buzzwords like “machine learning” or “neural networks” or “deep learning.” They may not seem like a database, but you fill them with data and ask them questions. Why not? The good news from artificial intelligence solutions is that you don’t need to know what you’re looking for. You can just wave your hand and ask for something nebulous like “most interesting” or “closest.” There is no need for the right key, the infernal reference number that the customer service folks are always asking you to write down. The bad news is that you won’t know if you’ve gotten the right answer because you didn’t specify the question with any precision. Is that blog post really the most interesting? The biggest secret for Google’s success is that there is no absolute right answer. If you’re in the ball park no one can complain. The list of machine learning toolkits is almost too long to contemplate. You can always ask your favorite search engine for the “most interesting” AI. Blockchain The word blockchain may be tangled up with the complicated economics and politics of Bitcoin, but underneath all of the talk about currency is an extremely stable and practical distributed data store. Everyone has a chance to update the data in the long table and everyone gets to share in the answer. The big excitement is the fact that everyone shares in the same answers. It’s perfect for businesses that are frenemies. Some developers take this a bit further and talk about “smart contracts,” which is another way of saying that the bits in the database are trustworthy enough for people to base legal issues like ownership upon them. You can’t do that with a regular database, which can be tweaked by anyone with administrative privileges. There are weak points, though. Each user must maintain an encryption key because all transactions must be digitally signed. If that key gets lost or forgotten, the data in those rows is frozen forever. If that key gets stolen, well, all bets are off. The blockchain isn’t perfect, in other words, but it’s much more reliable than the standard model. R3, Ripple, and IBM are just three of the many competitors exploring the space. Many of the leading banks have their own internal projects. And then there are the Bitcoin and Altcoin companies themselves, which are also big parts of the ecosystem.

Matt Mullenweg, one of the founding developers of WordPress was the keynote speaker at Saturday’s WordCamp event in Provo, Utah. His speech included a summary of WordPress developments this year and included a large list of what’s next for the fast-growing, free blogging service.
The WordPress blogging service started with only 5 developers and 2 blogs. In the beginning, the developers focused on building a system for friends who were not technical in order to help them join the web community. The goal was to develop something that was both simple and user-friendly. Currently, WordPress.com has about 4 million new posts and 6.5 billion page views per month. WordPress has had a strong development schedule which has continued to accelerate.
WordPress 2008 Year-in-Review
In 2007 there were 1090 commits made and so far in 2008, there are already 2840. WordPress has made 11 releases in the last year alone which is much higher than normal. The WordPress team also just added 3 new core developers increasing the development team back to five full-time members. The upcoming WordPress 2.7 release is currently scheduled for November 2008.
In the year 2007 there were 2,849,349 downloads of WordPress tracked and in 2008 they have already surpassed 11 million downloads. This number does not include the number of downloads and installs from hosting companies which would significantly increase that number.
Combating Blog Spam
Over 5 billion spams were caught in the last year with 99.925% accuracy using the WordPress Akismet plugin. This shows that Akismet is staying very high on accuracy. There is a new type of spam that is now getting through due to spammers being very clever. They are starting to copy comments on other posts and change the URL referenced to gain a free link. Spammers are also paying people to go in and leave relevant comments and spam you with their links in them. The most common are spammers leaving kind remarks and compliments and having the webmaster approve the messages due to them feeling flattered by the positive remarks.
WordPress Mobility
Due to the website friendly nature of the iPhone and the success of the iPhone application (over 100k installs) WP is considering the creation of some new apps for other platforms as well including the blackberry and other mobile handsets.
WordPress Plugins
WordPress plans on improving their observance of plugin stats. Mullenweg mentioned there is a plan to watch the bottom 1000 plugins to find the new and upcoming trends. It is easier to see what is gaining fast popularity when monitoring the tail end of the plugins. He also mentioned the use of intelligent tails or the monitoring of the use of plugins and packages in order to gain valuable intelligence from the free market. Currently, there are a huge number of features brought in via plugins. He mentions a few examples such as one that does real estate management and another that is an independent record label system.
Thoughts on PHP5
Matt Mullenweg predicted that PHP5 would fail early on due to its lack of major changes. He was wrong and fully admits it. PHP5 is now being used to host WordPress in 79% of WordPress installs. This means that when PHP4 usage falls below 10% or so they will pull the trigger and move ongoing development and support to PHP5 only. This will allow them to speed up and optimize the WP system.
The Future of WordPress – WordPress 2.7 Live Demo
Included during his speech was a live demo of WordPress 2.7. Version 2.7 is expected to be released sometime during November of 2008 and currently has 13,000 blogs testing it.
One of the key features of 2.7 will include a dashboard redesign. Mullenweg began by apologizing for a lack of tests regarding usability with a previous dashboard redesign. This time there is much more focus on ensuring that there won’t be issues such as a large number of user complaints which came with the removal of the edit feature in comments.
Version 2.7 also introduces a number of major changes with one of the largest being the dashboard navigation being moved to the left-hand side. This new navigation has expandable categories that can be viewed in real time when you click them (i.e. no waiting for the page to reload etc.) The right side of the default dashboard setup has a quick blog post and the center features an inbox. The dashboard still has stats and other dashboard features WordPress blog owners will be familiar with. The whole dashboard has been built in ajax which allows changes to be made on the fly. Users will, therefore, be able to, for example, drag a section in between columns to move stuff over and around as well as the ability to hide or show specific sections.
Other key changes include:
New sticky posts feature which will allow bloggers to keep important or interesting posts at the top of their blog’s homepage.
An insert media button has been added which allows for one-click uploading of pictures, video, audio, etc. WordPress will automatically know what to do with the media uploads and will set them up appropriately.
Inline editing – you can see your actual blog and quickly edit tags, categories etc, or mass edit an entire batch of posts at once to add new tags etc.
Comments API – most commonly people edit comments and check stats, now you can moderate, approve, delete etc. and reply to comments via your mobile phone as well as the dashboard. Comments can now be threaded (you can enable it and have limits set etc.) which allows you to have conversations without the current hacks that people do to keep a conversation linear.
Keyboard Shortcuts introduced for moderating comments
Automatic plugin installation and upgrades via the browser. This includes the ability to search, upload, upgrade, install, and manage plugins from within the dashboard. It will also allow for one click installs for plugins that are in the WordPress.org library. Mullenweg also mentioned a goal of including this same feature for themes in the future (i.e. search, install, upgrade etc. all with a simple, intuitive interface).

Security is an increasingly important aspect of WordPress development. Currently, there are over 20 US government entities using WP including Air Force, Army-CIA, Coast Guard, Department of Energy, Homeland Security, State Treasury, DEA, Marine Corps, FBI, National Security Agency, Navy, National Reconnaissance Agency, Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Mullenweg also discussed what he considers to be upcoming blogging trends. The use of media, namely photo galleries and videos are going to become more mainstream in blogs. Additionally, this includes bloggers making posts that can just be a comment, a video or some small item on its own, and the ability to include the media content inline with your post. This will allow WordPress become a complete hub of information.
He continued to discuss WordPress as a hub noting that people’s blogs will become their best possible social profile and they intend to make it so when you post something on another social site such as Twitter or YouTube it will work on WordPress. Of important note there he mentioned that your data will live on your blog and in your database so you don’t have to worry if the other site goes down, you will still have all the data and stay in control. This hub system is a long-term goal of their team.
BackPress is another system he discussed which will help show the underlying framework for WP and Theme Press, their user systems, internationalization, security systems, etc. making it easier for developers to make use of the WordPress base.
Another exciting development in the works is BuddyPress. This will allow users to have to take a group such as a Boy Scout, church, or team and build a small “Facebook in a box” type of system in which you can have a full set of plugins and extensions that build a small social network with activities, profiles, interests, photos, groups etc. – all in a small private group. BuddyPress will allow small groups the ability to develop their own public or private social-networking site.
Mullenweg also discussed an improved feedback loop – trying to incorporate user feedback and testing earlier in the process of making updates. A core goal with this is the desire to incorporate more “normal” people in the process of development.
Mullenweg also mentioned how he feels that this is the year of themes. While everything used to be plugin driven, themes are really taking off with new automatic plugins built into them. They are being used for things such as a monotone theme which can make your site change the backgrounds to be complimentary to the photos you are updating.
What Else if Coming Up for WordPress?
Launching sometime in the near future will be WordPress.tv which will be a video site with screencasts that will show WordCamp videos including key speakers. This service will be searchable, include tags, and will also include HD video content.

The Esri Startup Program is back from the annual 2017 Esri Partner Conference (EPC) and Developer Summit (DevSummit) in Palm Springs, California. These are two events held at the same location that overlap by one day. It’s one of the most important events of the year for Esri community.

WordPress WordCamp 2008
Matt Mullenweg, one of the founding developers of WordPress was the keynote speaker at Saturday’s WordCamp event in Provo, Utah. His speech included a summary of WordPress developments this year and included a large list of what’s next for the fast-growing, free blogging service.
The WordPress blogging service started with only 5 developers and 2 blogs. In the beginning the developers focused on building a system for friends who were not technical in order to help them join the web community. The goal was to develop something that was both simple and user friendly. Currently WordPress.com has about 4 million new posts and 6.5 billion page views per month. WordPress has had a strong development schedule which has continued to accelerate.
WordPress 2008 Year-in-Review
In 2007 there were 1090 commits made and so far in 2008 there are already 2840. WordPress has made 11 releases in the last year alone which is much higher than normal. The WordPress team also just added 3 new core developers increasing the development team back to five full time members. The upcoming WordPress 2.7 release is currently scheduled for November 2008.
In the year 2007 there were 2,849,349 downloads of WordPress tracked and in 2008 they have already surpassed 11 million downloads. This number does not include the number of downloads and installs from hosting companies which would significantly increase that number.
Combating Blog Spam
Over 5 billion spams were caught in the last year with 99.925% accuracy using the WordPress Akismet plugin. This shows that Akismet is staying very high on accuracy. There is a new type of spam that is now getting through due to spammers being very clever. They are starting to copy comments on other posts and change the URL referenced to gain a free link. Spammers are also paying people to go in and leave relevant comments and spam you with their links in them. The most common is spammers leaving kind remarks and compliments and having the webmaster approve the messages due to them feeling flattered by the positive remarks.
WordPress Mobility
Due to the website friendly nature of the iPhone and the success of the iPhone application (over 100k installs) WP is considering the creation of some new apps for other platforms as well including the blackberry and other mobile handsets.
WordPress Plugins
WordPress plans on improving their observance of plugin stats. Mullenweg mentioned there is a plan to watch the bottom 1000 plugins to find the new and upcoming trends. It is easier to see what is gaining fast popularity when monitoring the tail end of the plugins. He also mentioned the use of intelligent tails or the monitoring of the use of plugins and packages in order to gain valuable intelligence from the free market. Currently there are a huge number of features brought in via plugins. He mentions a few examples such as one that does real estate management and another that is an independent record label system.
Thoughts on PHP5
Matt Mullenweg predicted that PHP5 would fail early on due to its lack of major changes. He was wrong and fully admits it. PHP5 is now being used to host WordPress in 79% of WordPress installs. This means that when PHP4 usage falls below 10% or so they will pull the trigger and move ongoing development and support to PHP5 only. This will allow them to speed up and optimize the WP system.
The Future of WordPress – WordPress 2.7 Live Demo
Included during his speech was a live demo of WordPress 2.7. Version 2.7 is expected to be released sometime during November of 2008 and currently has 13,000 blogs testing it.
One of the key features of 2.7 will include a dashboard redesign. Mullenweg began by apologizing for a lack of tests regarding usability with a previous dashboard redesign. This time there is much more focus on ensuring that there won’t be issues such as the large number of user complaints which came with the removal of the edit feature in comments.
Version 2.7 also introduces a number of major changes with one of the largest being the dashboard navigation being moved to the left hand side. This new navigation has expandable categories that can be viewed in real time when you click them (i.e. no waiting for the page to reload etc.) The right side of the default dashboard setup has a quick blog post and the center features an inbox. The dashboard still has stats and other dashboard features WordPress blog owners will be familiar with. The whole dashboard has been built in ajax which allows changes to be made on the fly. Users will therefore be able to, for example, drag a section in between columns to move stuff over and around as well as the ability to hide or show specific sections.
Other key changes include:
A new sticky posts feature which will allow bloggers to keep important or interesting posts at the top of their blog’s homepage.
An insert media button has been added which allows for one click uploading of pictures, video, audio, etc. WordPress will automatically know what to do with the media uploads and will set them up appropriately.
Inline editing – you can see your actual blog and quickly edit tags, categories etc, or mass edit an entire batch of posts at once to add new tags etc.
Comments API – most commonly people edit comments and check stats, now you can moderate, approve, delete etc. and reply to comments via your mobile phone as well as the dashboard. Comments can now be threaded (you can enable it and have limits set etc.) which allows you to have conversations without the current hacks that people do to keep a conversation linear.
Keyboard Shortcuts introduced for moderating comments
Automatic plugin installation and upgrades via the browser. This includes the ability to search, upload, upgrade, install, and manage plugins from within the dashboard. It will also allow for one click installs for plugins that are in the WordPress.org library. Mullenweg also mentioned a goal of including this same feature for themes in the future (i.e. search, install, upgrade etc. all with a simple, intuitive interface).

Security is an increasingly important aspect of WordPress development. Currently there are over 20 US government entities using WP including: Air Force, Army CIA, Coast Guard, Department of Energy, Homeland Security, State Treasury, DEA, Marine Corps, FBI, National Security Agency, Navy, National Reconnaissance Agency, Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Mullenweg also discussed what he considers to be upcoming blogging trends. The use of media, namely photo galleries and videos are going to become more main-stream in blogs. Additionally this includes bloggers making posts that can just be a comment, a video or some small item on its own, and the ability to include the media content inline with your post. This will allow WordPress become a more complete hub of information.
He continued to discuss WordPress as a hub noting that people’s blogs will become their best possible social profile and they intend to make it so when you post something on another social site such as Twitter or YouTube it will work on WordPress. Of important note there he mentioned that your data will live on your blog and in your database so you don’t have to worry if the other site goes down, you will still have all the data and stay in control. This hub system is a long term goal of their team.
BackPress is another system he discussed which will help show the underlying framework for WP and Theme Press, their user systems, internationalization, security systems, etc. making it easier for developers to make use of the WordPress base.
Another exciting development in the works is BuddyPress. This will allow users to have take a group such as a Boy Scout, church, or team and build a small “Facebook in a box” type of system in which you can have a full set of plugins and extensions that build a small social network with activities, profiles, interests, photos, groups etc. – all in a small private group. BuddyPress will allow small groups the ability to develop their own public or private social-networking site.
Mullenweg also discussed an improved feedback loop – trying to incorporate user feedback and testing earlier in the process of making updates. A core goal with this is the desire to incorporate more “normal” people in the process of development.
Mullenweg also mentioned how he feels that this is the year of themes. While everything used to be plugin driven, themes are really taking off with new automatic plugins built into them. They are being used for things such as a monotone theme which can make your site change the backgrounds to be complimentary to the photos you are updating.
What Else if Coming Up for WordPress?
Launching sometime in the near future will be WordPress.tv which will be a video site with screencasts that will show WordCamp videos including key speakers. This service will be searchable, include tags, and will also include HD video content.
