Top 12 New-to-Me Songs of 2024
I'm meticulous about listening to new music and tracking it all. So here's the top 12 in no particular order:
"Dressing Up" by in the blue shirt. I'm a sucker for upbeat chopped vocals and in the blue shirt's entire discography rocks. I need more like this.
"this is what space feels like" by JVKE deserved its virality. If you've only heart it in shortform videos, go listen to the full song. Please.
"This Will Make You Happier" by Blue Foster. Poignant and a good reminder. I thought about this song a lot, and I'm going to try to live by its message in 2025.
"TEAM FLARE!" by WDFA & Shofu as my nerdcore rep on this list. There were a lot of bangers this year from the YouTube nerdcore scene, and this isn't necessarily my #1 favorite, but it combines a lot of good artists and represents the constant raising of the bar for bars-based nerd rap. Some really clever stuff in here as the pokemon folks start getting more esoteric with things instead of just punning on pokemon names.
"Going For The Orange" by 3D BLAST. I love 3D Blast's sampling and syth-y vibes. This track in particular puts you in a particular time and place and lets you just exist with some friends.
"VANISHER" by LilyNiku, who now publishes music as Femtanyl. Strong contender for my #1 favorite artist I discovered this year, and this track's clean, poppy melody grabs me and makes me want to headbang like nothing else. Genres get fuzzy with this stuff, but I've seen hyperflip and digital hardcore used. VANISHER only exists in reuploads now; "MURDER EVERY 1 U KNOW!" almost got this spot for being the most aggressive earworm I have right now, and also not delisted by the artist.
"Havana Banana" by Too Many Zooz. Brassy New York street jazz. Great sound.
"Taking What's Not Yours" by TV Girl is another earworm.
"The Milk Carton" by Madilyn Mei. I love a catchy indie folk acoustic song that dips into a little digital distortion for effect.
"Crush" by Tessa Violet. Just so catchy.
"Hyperdeath (Central Cee Flip)" by strxwberrymilk. I went hard on breakcore, hyperpop, and the related hard-hitting indie electric genres this year. Extremely tempting to fill this entire list with them. I wanted to include something by Lafew, Mashiro, and Xxstarlit, but strxberrymilk won out one of the songs I kept coming back to the most.
"party at club bug!" by spellcasting reps all of the goofy goodtime tracks that I so adore. This could've come straight out of OMORI.
By listening time this should be way more weighted towards hyperpop, hardcore electronic, nerdcore, and indie rock. But these all really stuck with me and represent a lot of artists and genres I've had a good time exploring. If you read this far and have music recommendations PLEASE let me know.

motivated by prev post. list of concerts i remember going to chronologically
age 10: billy talent & mcr. billy talent and one other band were opening for mcr but i liked billy talent more so i was there for them more.
age 14: george watsky. in detroit. went with my brother & wrote a seven page paper about the concert for a school project.
age 17-ish: foo fighters. lost some time during this concert, honestly not sure if i passed out or just zoned out but i was seated so it was ok. i like the foo fighters a lot and the concert was good it was just really late at night
age 21: hozier. november 2019 so like Right before the pandemic. also seated, an honestly transcendental experience.
literally in the past month: too many zooz (awesome), they might be giants (one of the best nights of my life), joe jackson (pretty damn good)
#ignore me#i MAY have been to more....? but i donot remember#honestly i saw a lot more live theater/musicals growing up than straight up concerts#and have only recently started spending my own money on tickets#too many zooz & joe jackson were both on my parents' dime cos they had extra tickets tho#i need to start saying yes to that kind of thing more often both those were a great time#ok actually i had. Some Gripes with the joe jackson show BUT IM NOT GETTING INTO IT IN THE TAGS
