GETTING DOWN IN DETROIT WITH TONY WHLGN | HOUSE OF VANS POP UP
Tony Whlgn created a one-of-a-kind mural at House of Vans Detroit along with leading folks in his Customade workshop.
Find out more from Tony’s night by taking the leap below!
Photographs by Laura June Kirsch
Who are you, where you are from and what do you do? Tony Whlgn®, from the Eastside of Detroit. My background is in design & fine art. I’m also founder of the Whlgn®–a conglomerate of creative entrepreneurs–operating as a think tank and working to strengthen community resources around creative entrepreneurship in Detroit.
Describe your artwork for someone who may have never come across it? My work uses the structural and geometric bases of the indigenous mask from different cultures: Using them as a communication tool, these masks express the reflection of the environment of my inner and outer self. I feel we’ve been conflicted with showing the world our true Self.
Describe to folks the mural you created for the House of Vans Pop Up? Can you tell us about your process when painting a mural? This mural represented some of the minute characteristics of Detroit culture, and the mask represented the community that inhabits it.
I typically always start from black. For me, this pigment represents creating “Something from Nothing”–pulling a color out of a dark space, allowing the eye of the observer to fill in the blanks with their imagination unconsciously. Through natural self-expression, I want my art to inspire engagement with self-knowledge and knowledge of the whole world, which in a sense is self. After using a soft pastel or chalk, I create an outline of quick lines & geometric shapes. Follows is a series of broad color strokes, intuitive color fills & detail lines.
Having created a lot of murals, what is it about painting large scale that you just love? I love the process.
Words to live by? Or words that keep you inspired and motivated? Do what you love and love what you do. — whlgn®

"DISMISSIVE, FACADE"
by Whlgn
Born on Detroit's Eastside, Tony Whlgn [hoo-li-gen] has been consumed by art since an early age and today says he survives as an artist by "by creating unconventional ways for my work to be experienced and made available." A decade ago he and some close friends formed "the Whlgn", pushing each other's imaginations and entrepreneurial spirits and in September, 2018 gratefully accepted an invitation by @1xrun to participate in Detroit’s fourth annual @MuralsInTheMarket festival. Whlgn expressed his thoughts behind this Alfred St mural this way: "Right in front of us are usually the things that matter the most. Wearing False fronts, hiding who we really are behind the mask of our egos, conflicted with showing the world our true Self." @tonywhlgn/

Now in its 12th installment, the Vans Custom Culture 2021 event launched recently, affording an opportunity for students to work with the skate and action-sports brand and win prize money to benefit their schools' art programs. The Costa Mesa, Calif., Vans is asking students to submit digital shoe designs under the themes of "Hometown Pride" and "Head in the Clouds." These themes are aimed at celebrating the neighborhoods that the schools serve and student hopes for the future.
Prizes include a $50,000 top award that will support the winning school's art program, while runners up will receive $15,000 prizes. The top five schools will receive mentorship from one of Vans' art ambassadors, such as Kelly Breez, Robin Eisenberg, Jay Howell, Todd Francis, Olivia Krause, Camilo Medina, Noah Humes, O.J. Hays, Tony Whlgn and Sydney James.
Opened Jan. 4, registration on the Vans Custom Culture website will close Jan. 29, and the digital-submissions window ends Feb. 19. From submissions, 250 schools will be chosen to submit a physical version of their shoe designs. The top 50 designs will be entered into the online voting pool that begins April 26 to identify the five finalists. Schools that create the best designs using sustainable materials will have the opportunity to win a $500 gift card for the purchase of art supplies. The brand will also donate $500 per school to an environmental organization.
"The variety of submissions we received in the past continues to reveal the pool of talented artists we have and the need for well-funded art-education programs across the country," Vice President of Marketing at Vans Americas Carly Gomez said.
A grand-prize winner of the Vans Custom Culture contest will be announced in May through a livestream event.

GETTING DOWN IN DETROIT WITH ZELOOPERZ | HOUSE OF VANS POP UP
Performing artist, Zelooperz created a beautiful mural at the House of Vans Detroit pop up that still has us in awe! We’ve been checking out Zelooperz’s works for quite some time, so you can imagine how pumped we were to chat with him for a quick q&a. Take the Leap!
Photographs by Laura June Kirsch
Who are you, where you are from and what do you do? What up, I’m Zelooperz aka (Moszel Offline) from Detroit, and I’m a performing artist.
What was the inspiration behind your live mural? What materials did you use? My mural was inspired by the concepts of the future and the shape of technology. I used a combination of matte and iridescent acrylic colors.
Was there an aspect of live painting you enjoyed more than creating works in let’s say, the studio? The difference between working at home in the studio and live painting is the satisfaction of everyone else getting to see me do what I love. When the people are watching, it brings inspiration in confidence form.
Tell us about some of your other passions beyond fine art. Beyond fine art, music is another part of me that I like to express on a daily basis, I’ve been touring around the world with Bruiser Brigade.
Who are some of your favorite visual artists that folks should check out? Tony Whlgn and Sixmau, these guys are phenomenal and have two totally different art styles with some of the same values. But my biggest inspiration is Hajime Sorayama, mainly for his robot art.
What’s coming up next for you that you can share? Soon I will be releasing new music with Bruiser Brigade and I’m excited about that.

“DISMISSIVE, FAÇADE”
by Tony Whlgn
Born on Detroit’s Eastside Antonio Robinson, aka Tony Whlgn (Hoo-li-gen) doesn’t believe in conforming to society standards and is proud to be a product of his environment. Deciding early on that college was not the right path for him, he and a group of his close friends formed the Whlgn in 2009, each Whlgn contributing to a vast array of skill sets: from photography to carpentry and everything in between. Now back in Detroit after spending time working in New York, Tony Whlgn recently created this piece on Alfred St in @EasternMarket for the @1xrun curated @muralsinthemarket. Happy for the opportunity to impact his community he says this piece is about wearing false fronts—“hiding who we really are behind the mask of our egos, conflicted with showing the world our true Self.” @tonywhlgn

The 13th: A Whlgn Cabaret
The 13th: A Whlgn Cabaret
2017 for many reasons started off pretty damn smoothly for myself and many others. For The Whlgns, however, decided to bring in the year with a sort-of traditional Detroit Cabaret. I mean of course if you have a collective such as, there’s going to be a bunch of creativity in the mix. Tony Whlgn was doing a live mural, Bre Whlgn took photos while Allante Whlgn sold WHLGN shirts (That Sean Whlgn…

Detroit Entrepreneurs and Artists Collaborate on Second Annual Quicken Loans Small Business Murals Project
For the second straight year, Quicken Loans partnered with 1xRUN—the team behind Detroit’s Murals In The Market—to help strengthen small, local businesses and support the city’s creative community.
Recently, the Small Business Murals Project helped create six new murals on the sides of buildings owned by entrepreneurs throughout Detroit. The project also produced six murals for small Detroit businesses in 2017.
Over the course of 10 days, Detroit artists Sabrina Nelson, Tony WHLGN, Paul Johnson, Anthony Lee, Tylonn J. Sawyer and Zak Meers worked hand-in-hand with local business owners to create vibrant, larger-than-life pieces of art in communities across the city. From concept to final designs, the artists and entrepreneurs made each location unique and representative of the flavor and character of the business—as well as neighborhood—all through each artist’s signature style.
“The small business murals are a great way to celebrate Detroit’s deep-rooted connection between art and entrepreneurship,” says Helen Johnson, vice president of Quicken Loans Community Fund. “Growing small businesses and promoting the rich talent of local artists are key to the advancement of Detroit’s neighborhoods. We’re thrilled to see this project continue to expand and inspire creative collaboration throughout the city while also bringing attention, and increased foot traffic, to the businesses featured in this year’s project.”
New this year, three of the artists opted to design new “paint by numbers” style murals. More than 30 Quicken Loans team members were able to participate and help complete the projects in the Southwest Detroit, North End and Grandmont Rosedale areas.
“Spending time at each of the walls while these artists are painting is a profound experience,” says Jesse Cory, co-founder of 1xRUN and Murals In The Market. “With so many people from the neighborhood stopping by to see what’s going on, and to ask each of the artists questions, these works of art become a part of the community instantly and help transform a little corner in each neighborhood.”
The Quicken Loans Small Business Murals Project is part of a larger philanthropic strategy to invest in housing stability, entrepreneurship, education and employment, public space activation and community sponsorship in Detroit. Through its For-More-Than-Profit model, the Quicken Loans Community Fund brings together for-profit businesses and non-profit investments. All of the businesses in the Small Business Murals project are graduates of ProsperUs, a local entrepreneurial training/development program.
1xRUN and their veteran team have championed Detroit’s public art scene for nearly a decade. Their annual arts and culture festival, Murals In The Market, is also entering its fourth year this September, partnering with the Eastern Market Corporation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to present dozens of permanent murals throughout the Eastern Market district. Over the past five years, 1xRUN has curated and produced more than 150 murals in Eastern Market alone, with more than 250 murals throughout the city of Detroit.
The public is encouraged to go see the new murals and help support these local businesses at the addresses below:
