Strange Connections

As I’ve grown up on this website, things have changed around me. I’ve met people, made friends, and learned things along the way. I’ve now gotten to a point where I see my username and kinda of cringe at it.

It was meant to be jarring. However, it’s not exactly true. I’m not against feminism. I’m against a small fringe of people who are very extreme. I grew up on the Internet during the “anti-SJW” era. All those cringe compilations and skeptic Youtubers making “anti-feminist” content.

I didn’t fall down a rabbit hole per say, but I did make excuses for people who were “on my side.” They went from making actual criticisms like how Ghostbusters (2016) tried to benefit by creating very divisive marketing to complaining about literally everything.

Then I watched videos about how a once liberal guy became alt-right and pulled himself out of it. It reminded me of what I could’ve became because I was toeing the line. I was at a point where I couldn’t enjoy media anymore because both sides had something to complain about. People in the comments had many similar experiences, and although I believe some of them went from one fringe corner to another, it resonated with me in a way.

But this is not the only connection I want to make. When I was younger, I watched Tommysotomayor. I mean really fucking young, and he had a thing where he made videos on angry, black women, calling them “hair-hatted hooligans” and other stuff. He formatted his stuff in a way where he complained about the very angry and nasty, dark-skinned women.

However, instead of making fun of these few women, it bled into an anti-black women narrative. His comment section was very vicious, complaining about how black women shouldn’t be trusted and how they turned to white women. I’m ashamed to admit I was very impressionable to that.

I was scared of being seen as the loud, angry black woman stereotype. I was worried about how people saw me, but as I got older I realized how that thinking is absolutely dumb. I don’t know how I got out of it, but I’m glad I fucking did.
