Knights of the Zodiac
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
Knights of the Zodiac (2023, USA/Japan)
Director: Tomek Bagiński
Writers: Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken & Kiel Murray (based on the manga by Masami Kurumada)
Mini-review:
This isn't as bad as some people say, but it isn't good either, that's for sure. The whole time I was watching it, I kept thinking it would have made a pretty good TV show. However, with a runtime of less than 2 hours, both the plot and the character arcs felt completely rushed and undeserving of their final resolutions. It also doesn't help that the movie takes itself way too seriously. But there are good things too. All the action scenes are impressive and the CGI is pretty solid, considering it didn't have a super huge budget or anything. And most importantly, the cast does a great job, and its obvious these actors elevate the material and save it from disaster. Mackenyu is as charming and charismatic as always, and he makes it clear once again that he was born to be an action movie star. And of course, Famke Janssen and Sean Bean deliver the quality anyone would expect from veterans like them. To sum up, Knights of the Zodiac has its strengths, but it left me feeling like it couldn't even begin to tap into its potential.

One of the producer of the Witcher Netflix series - **Tomasz Bagiński - **has blamed it's plummeting viewership on Americans being too stupid to understand politics... and TikTok.
Tumblr media
And not, of course, on the show's complete disregard for the books deeply entrenched lore, their terrible and directionless writing offer 3 seasons, and being so bad at their job that it causes their leading actor - Henry Cavill - to depart the project.
I wish I was joking, BTW. Holy crap @ the 2nd one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FYI, there is absolutely no researched evidence to back up the claim that technology reduces attention spans or that they've fallen of at all.
Or that Americans are "stupid."
It's an utterly baseless myth spouted by cynical old people who want to bitch about "the kids."
What's actually happening there is that many impoverished Americans can't actually AFFORD higher or level education due to income inequality.
This leads to an imbalance in the number of people ABLE to access education and progress into a comfortable adult life. The idea that an entire country of people are just "stupid" is the stupidest mindset imaginable.

All I can say is: Mind positively blown!! You are getting an honorary degree in Witcher studies for this, right? RIGHT???
oh man! thank you!! honestlyyyy i wish i could get a real degree in witcher studies—or, well, i mean pursue this kind of research as a focus of an academic study. i mean, i would like to go to grad school one day… well, it’s a little dream ok 😂
all the people who wrote the journal articles and essays i’ve looked at, who created all the literature looking into polish speculative fiction (and ofc specifically the witcher), are like role models to me, even though i had to read most of their work through google translate and DeepL 😭
Zbigniew Wałaszewski, “Wiedźmin: pierwszy polski supersystem rozrywkowy” in Obraz literatury w komunikacji społecznej po roku ‘89
EVERYONE involved in Wiedźmin: polski fenomen popkultury (Wrocaw University) but especially Paulina Drewniak’s “Are we there yet?” and Anna Wróblewska’s “Jak napisać bestseller?”
Adam Flamma, (who was also published in the previous, but moreso for) Wiedźmin: historia fenomenu, which is just so comprehensive as a resource it’s hard to not cite in everything
Anna Michalska’s thesis, Otherness and Intertextuality in The Witcher (Utrecht University)
and some magazine articles (that are more essay- than article-like):
Dominika Materska and Ewa Popiołek, “Trzy gra Sapkowskiego” (Nowa Fantastyka, (143) 1994)
Agnieszka Fulińska, “Basń, która ocala” (Tygodnik Powszechny, (29) 1999)
agnieszka fulińska is also kind of a freaking legend because she did the first ever known translation of “the witcher” (hers was “the hexer”) short story into english—as part of a project between ŚKF and superNOWA in 2000 to translate polish authors into english… also tomasz bagiński (yes, the same tomasz as the one we know from platige image and netflix) did the cover and illustrations for this).
also, these aren’t “witcher”, specifically, but related topics:
Stanisław Krawczyk’s “Popular Authors in Search of Recognition” (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań)
Piotr Siuda, “In Pursuit of Pop Culture” (Kazimierz Wielki University, Bydgoszcz)
so like… it is something people do professionally, academically, so it’s a dream that is perhaps one day possible…
however, there are two necessary precursor accomplishments that need to happen before anything happens on this front:
>learn polish
>become financially stable
… each one is as hard as the other 😂

First thing i managed to read in this ear was short novel "The Cathedral" by Jacek Dukaj for my polish lesson. I forgot abt it, so Ive done speed run of reading 50 pages just before class.
Its sci-fi, really good i think. I like vibe of it, used langage is kinda typical for this genre (so I enjoyed it, at first u dont understed half of that but after few pages its starting to make sense, actually).
"The main hero comes on a planetoid, where a “cathedral” was built to commemorate a death of a man who sacrificed himself so others would live. He is treated like a saint. The hero, sent by The Church, has to decide if the miracles were real, and if he should be called a saint. The Church is running out of time. The planetoid is on a way to “doom”."- short description that I copied for internet bc im too tired to write this on my own. Oh, and the main character is priest btw, it really makes his point of view somehow deeper.
And in 2000 was created short animation by Tomasz Bagiński inspired by Dukaj's novel, it was fully created with computers technology and also was nominated for Oscar. If someone wants to watch, heres link to animation, just few minuts, but its interesting: https://youtu.be/lrCN2dLFf5Y?si=sYdGVVHyULQyzXTT

Sorry, @suzieloveships , I haven't watched Interview with the Vampire, but most of what you write about TWN is wrong. Of course, you have the right to dislike the show, even hate it if you want to, and there is a lot that can be criticised about it and that could have been better, but spreading false rumours is not what you should do. If you claim things, you have to give reliable sources for them. Where did "the writers actually admited they didn't even like the books"? What is your source for this? There is none! One writer who was fired claimed that. Is he a reliable source? No! He was fired from another project just recently for unacceptable behaviour. Some of the writers had no prior knowledge of the Witcher when they joined the writers' room, that is true, and Lauren Hissrich did that on purpose to include people who would have a fresh look at the material. But others involved in the project were familiar with the novels and big fans, like, for example, Tomasz Bagiński.
And what do you mean by "The Witcher missed the whole point of the series"? What is the whole point in your opinion? Especially S2 consisted of plot points that Netflix invented (and at least some of it is most probably Henry Cavill's fault), but S1 and S3 are, all in all, still pretty close to the books when you look at the overall plot of the novels.
About Henry Cavill, he himself said in interviews that he repeatedly changed things last minute while shooting a scene and without informing his co-actors. How would you describe this as not "hard to work with"? Fortunately, his co-actors like Joey and Anya are very professional and talented actors and managed to make the best of it. But it must be a nightmare for the directors, producer and the showrunner.
And about the "when all he did was pointing out that the script doesn't follow the book", this is also nothing but rumour and misinformation. Henry Cavill changed lots of things in comparison to the books himself, for example the taciturn Geralt who hardly says anything but hmm and fuck. I don't say it was a bad thing, but it was definitely very different from book Geralt. Cavill mostly had game Geralt in his mind when he campaigned to get the role because he did not even know the games were based off books before Lauren Hissrich introduced him to the novels. (Even my 14 year old son knew about the books, btw, it was no secret.) Other actors, like Joey and Therica, actually know a lot more about the books than Cavill.
If you want to have a look at more things that Cavill changed and all the sources, you'll find everything on this very well researched blog @endiness
Repeating gossip and lies does not make them true, even if many people seem to believe in the Henry Cavill myth ...
Let is be know that when I say "AMC Interview with the Vampire is everything Netflix The Witcher should have been" what I mean is "Iwtv is a good adaptation of a popular fantasy series that does take liberties in many places but at the end of the day it still stay true themes of the book, made by people who can't stop praising the book author (and it also looks like a really fun set to work at) while The Witcher missed the whole point of the series, the writers actually admited they didn't even like the books and the lead actor left the project after being told like a dozen of times "he is hard to work with" when all he did was pointing out that the script doesn't follow the book" but also "they actually made those cat eyes contacts lens work"

Friday Film Short
The Kinematograph, a 2009 3D-animated short directed by Tomasz Bagiński of the award-winning Polish indie production house Platige Image, more recently a contributor to Blur Studios' Love + Robots sci-fi animation anthology series on Netflix. It's a touching story about an avid inventor who finds that succeeding with his masterwork might have come at a sacrificial price he was unwilling to pay ...

I feel like most people watching The Witcher must be confused as fuck, unaware decades pass between an episode and another. They really should have worked out how to present that timeline better. Also, valid complaints about rushing the timeline but things to consider: Netflix. Netflix will axe their own shows in a heart beat. They gave them 8 episodes, they gave them a second season, I don’t blame them for taking a mop to the whole thing and trying to work with what they have. Lauren S Hissrich and Tomasz Bagiński have seven seasons mapped out, but they would be extremely lucky not to get cancelled before that, meaning the series needs to to incredibly well for them not to get axed before time.
Considering the things they have to worry about and time constraints I think season 1 was extremely well put together and I thank everyone involved for the work well done.
Now release the freaking soundtrack!
