'Rarely in recent years has so much public attention been riveted on three films opening over a single two-week period. Just as “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” (Paramount) has arrived, and just ahead of the July 21 openings of “Barbie” (Warner Bros. Discovery) and “Oppenheimer” (Universal), hopes for three distinct films changing the trajectory for the summer are sky-high.
Ahead of the initial reports on “Mission: Impossible” results from pre-Wednesday previews, here’s a film-by-film analysis of the opportunities and challenges for each film, as well as their combined potential for theaters.
“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One”
Two things to note ahead: The pre-marketing cost on this latest sequel has been reported as $290 million, triple both of the previous two films in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. And you might have noticed the marketing? Not cheap either.
Then, there are the expectations. Anything less than the biggest film of the summer (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is heading to close to $400 million) or even the year (“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” $574 million) might seem disappointing.
That’s unfair and unrealistic. That potential certainly exists, but so do impediments.
The consistent appeal of this franchise since 1996 (as well as its consistent quality) is evident....
This summer has consistently shown multiple franchise titles falling short of high-end expectations...But could lesser sequel resistance be a factor here?
Though past films have overcome this, “Mission: Impossible” is the first half of a two-part story. That could impact reactions, thanks to an ending that, by all accounts, only whets the appetite for more.
“Mission: Impossible” also faces the issue of limited playtime in premium theaters, as well as second-weekend competition from both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” A handful of films this summer (“Spider-Verse,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Elemental”) have sustained strong holds, but the norm this year has been quick falloffs.
On the plus side, this is getting initially strong reviews...
Domestic returns are important, but any response to the film’s grosses should be more on the international side, both because of precedent (the previous two films’ take came from less than 30 percent domestic)...
Paramount is pushing all the buttons to maximize the gross. A Wednesday opening, plus three different sets of previews that started more limited (Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday) will produce a higher gross than just the normal Friday start. And the hope is that initial positive response make the weekend bigger.
“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”
These are two significant non-franchise titles in the heart of the summer, both costing around $100 million, both from previously acclaimed directors, with both hoping to receive both critical and popular positive response to propel them beyond the pre-release appeal the films already have.
The awareness for “Barbie” has been sky-high since production was announced. That sort of interest is tricky to maintain. The marketing has not faltered through its one-showing premiere last Sunday.
Like “Oppenheimer,” it faces challenges. It’s not what a four-quadrant movie (its appeal initially is skewing more female). It’s a comedy, with a tricky path to find the right balance.
It also has in Greta Gerwig a director whose “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” both surpassed expectations, and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as leads, and of course familiarity with the iconic dolls. And its originality might actually be an asset as audiences get more resistant to retreads.
“Oppenheimer” with Christopher Nolan directing (of course, a huge part of its draw) has likewise been in the spotlight since announced. As a biopic about a scientist, partially in black and white, 180 minutes, it’s not normal summer wide-release fare.
Nolan has smartly positioned the film as a visual experience. His previous films have emphasized premium formats, and the curiosity about how the spectacular power of atomic explosions are conveyed in state-of-the-art technology is high with this one.
His previous World War II-set “Dunkirk,” also released in July, was a success with adjusted grosses of around $200 million domestic/$600 million worldwide. It had the advantage of military action (a draw for older male audiences who rarely go to theaters). The appeal of the subject matter is less clear here. Apart from what promises to be a sensory experience, Nolan’s reputation and the expectation of top-level reviews add interest.
The two films will follow different paths.
“Barbie” might open to double “Oppenheimer” (perhaps $100 million to $50 million), but if those are the figures, that’s parallel success. “Barbie” should have a heavier domestic share, while Nolan has generally approached two-thirds foreign. “Oppenheimer” is handicapped by its length, combined with strong interest in seeing it on premium screens. That will limit seating initially (similar to “Avatar: The Way of Water”), but assuming it sustains interest, it could see a strong multiple. (“Dunkirk” got to $188 million from a $50 million opening weekend, less burdened by initial limitations and competition.)
The Stakes for the Summer and Beyond
Theaters need money into the till and fast. The range of suggested expectations ($300 million domestic for “Mission: Impossible,” $200 million for the other two) should be enough to improve the current situation. Last July saw a domestic gross of $1.134 billion. At those levels, combined with other films, $1.2 billion (best month since 2019) is doable.
Both “Mission: Impossible” and “Barbie” have the strongest upsides during the months above these levels (“Oppenheimer,” again, perhaps more over a longer period). If either or both overperform and push the total higher, it would be a clear win for theaters.
And over-performance by “Mission: Impossible” would provide relief that franchise fatigue can be overcome with a smart production. For “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” success would encourage more non-franchise top-end pictures, as well as deeper trust in proven creative directors like Nolan and Gerwig.
But the risk that one or more of them does less than expected also exists. Four years into the COVID-impact experience, it’s not getting any easier.'

i think this is the first year i haven’t seen any of the oscar’s best picture noms. i just don’t watch movies anymore, unless it’s something my kids want to see. my husband just doesn’t like movies and anytime i decide to watch something on my own it’s usually just rewatching a fav.
i kinda wanted to see eeaao but decided not to after figuring it would have a bunch of manic edits (based on what i’ve already seen) and that’s just not my thing anymore. i almost watched the ‘banshees of inisherin’ but didn’t. idk idk, i guess i’m more about watching shows than movies now. but man, i used to make such a big deal abt the oscars, and tonight i’ll probably skip it to watch ‘the last of us’.

Oscar Talk: Podcast Preview
The Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday morning and The Chair and Holly will be waking up early to devour it all for you so they can report in on a new POD FROM A CHAIR episode on Wednesday. Yes, every year we say we care less and less yet every year we seem to devote more and more time to speaking about it.  Why??  Because we are shameless and need a break from….everything. Preferably…

'The month of July is going to be an exciting one for Hollywood fans. The much-awaited Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One, starring Tom Cruise, will have a grand release on Wednesday, July 12. On July 21, there’ll be a clash between Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Barbie. The bookings of both Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One and Oppenheimer commenced on July 1 and has got an encouraging response.
However, the ticket sales for Oppenheimer have surpassed expectations. An exhibition source said, “We all knew that a section of moviegoers is excited to see Oppenheimer. But no one imagined that tickets would start selling like hot cakes, that too, more than two weeks before release.”
The source further said, “There is a heavy demand to see Oppenheimer in the IMAX screens. Since most shows are almost sold out, the exhibitors had no choice but to play shows at 3 AM as well.”
The source continued, “As of now, PVR Lower Parel and Inox Malad in Mumbai have started the bookings for shows at 3:30 AM and 3:45 AM respectively. The other IMAX theatres in the city will soon follow suit and so will IMAX screens in other parts of the country.”
Another exhibition source said, “There are also plans to have midnight shows, that it, at 12:00 AM. Not just IMAX, normal screens might also play midnight and post-midnight shows as per the demand. After all, those who are interested to see Oppenheimer are not going to wait to see the film on OTT and on their phones. This is a film meant for the big screen and hence, exhibitors expect the film to have a healthy lifetime, more so after the response to the bookings in IMAX theatres.”
An industry insider commented, “What’s fascinating is that when it comes to Hollywood films, until now, only the family-friendly Marvel superhero films and Avatar: The Way Of Water have had 12 AM and 3 AM/4 AM/5 AM shows. Oppenheimer doesn’t belong to any franchise or cinematic universe. It’s also an adult-rated flick. Yet, the demand is such. It shows the craze for Christopher Nolan among a section of the audience. The curiosity to see on the big screen the much-hyped atomic explosion scene, which is claimed to have been shot without CGI, has also played a big part. It has enhanced the hype manifold.”
As per reports, Oppenheimer has sold 14,000 tickets in the three national chains on the opening day, that too, in just IMAX.'

Welcome back to the Avatar Programme
Part 5 of ?
Summary: I was part of the Avatar programme. Simple as that. Then that changed after the schoolhouse incident.
Warning! More sad, more mentions of Tom Sully, relationship reveal between (Y/N) and Tom
Tumblr media
Helping Norm carry some gear to the flightline, he followed behind. Trudy already there, she waved as we both approached. Wainfleet already there, his arms resting on the rifle on the side door, blowing a whistle as he lay his eyes on me
“Hey (Y/N), nice to see you back in Avatar form again,” Trudy gave me a fistbump.
“This is Norm,” I gestured to Norm’s avatar form who gave a small wave, despite him holding two of my cases for samples. Putting the gear into Trudy’s Aerospatiale SA-2 Samson, whom she called ‘Baby’. Grace arrived not long after with Jake in tow. Hopping in, Trudy piloted us out of Hell’s Gate at 0900.
After flying for some time, watching the lush green scenery, flying with some of the Pandoran wildlife, near bodies of water and waterfalls almost like a sightseeing cruise, Norm and Jake’s expression of wonder and excitement plastered on their faces. Our long braids billow in the wind. We finally arrived at a spot in the jungle. Wainfleet and Jake hopped out first to clear the area with the rifles as we followed suit. Grace motioned for Trudy to cut the engine as we were going to stay for a while.
“Norm! your pack,” Grace raised her voice over the whirling blades. Norm turned back to grab it as I grabbed two of my four cases. Sitting down on the ledge I took my boots off, feeling the blades of grass between my large blue feet.
Grace gestured for Wainfleet, “Stay with the ship. One idiot with a gun is enough.”
“You the man, Doc,” Wainfleet responded.
As they wandered into the surrounding jungle, I headed to work. Not straying too far from the Samson. Coming across some recognisable plants I began taking samples of it, opening my case I opened the clear cylindrical containers, adding flora and herbs I could find within an arm's reach. Even going back to the Samson to get another case after filing the two cases worth of samples.
Grace, Norm and Jake somewhere off in the jungle talking about how everything is connected and the connection to Eywa. I could hear them, not too far away when the call of a hammerhead titanothere vibrated through the air. Loud thumping coming from the same direction. I stopped what I was doing to listen, getting up on my feet, I made my way to the same direction. Hearing some rustling from the brush, I watched as a thanator crept up behind them. The titanothere charged toward Jake, as he roared back.
“Grace! Thanator!” I yelled out to them, as the large feline-like animal snuck up behind them. Grace and Norm turned to look, now even more nervous. The thanator leapt over Jake, hissing at the hammerhead creatures. Turning back to Jake letting out a terrifying howl.
“So what about this one? Run? Don't run? What?” Jake questioned, his rifle pointed at it.
“Run! Definitely run!” and with that, Jake took off. He weaved through trees as the large feline viciously charged at him, running into the brush out of sight.
“Oh my god!” Norm freaked out, “What the hell was that?!”
“Thanator, get back to the Samson,” I told them.
“I'm not letting you go after him, (Y/N),” Grace yanked my arm, as I was about to leap over a fallen tree trunk, “You're not equipped to fight.”
“Someone has to. I know how to track. And I have some medical gear, in case To– Jake gets injured,” I say, pulling my arm from her grip.
“No,” Grace simply said, tightening her grip, “We’ll look for him together. Let's head back.”
I sigh, looking in the direction that Jake ran. We headed back to the Samson, picking up my case on the way back. All hopping in as Grace explained what happened to Trudy and Wainfleet. After liftoff, we started searching for Jake from the sky, unaware of what was going on below us. We searched until the sky slowly turned to dusk.
“I'm gonna have to call it, guys,” Trudy says over comms, “We’re not allowed to run night ops. Colonel’s orders.”
Grace sighed, removing the binoculars from her eyes. Norm and I continued to keep our eyes peeled on any movement down below.
“I'm sorry, Doc, he’s just gonna have to hang on till morning.”
“He won't make it till morning,” Grace states, clicking her tongue. Trudy turned the vehicle as we made our way back to Hell’s Gate. Landing her Baby on the flightline, Norm and I carried the cases to the science drop off zone. Then returning to the Avatar Compound, as the sky turned darker. Changing into more comfortable clothes before settling into the hammock. I stared at the empty bed Jake’s avatar rested the night before. It reminded me of my final moment with Tom. The soft kiss he gave lingering, I traced my lips with my finger at the memory. Tears falling from my eyes. Remembering those smiles he gave when I walked into any room he was in. His eyes smiled too as he stood opening his arms, giving me a big bear hug. He’d kiss my temple, as I asked him what he was doing. But now I can only grieve his loss and absence, the only reminder of him was his avatar, and hell, his own damn brother. Feeling the same pain when Anuk passed away. I silently cried myself to sleep.
Waking up back in the cradle, I opened it and sat up, rolling my neck as Ruth approached, handing me a cup of water. I downed it before standing up. Approaching Jake’s cradle I stood over it. Unaware of his encounter with a certain Na’Vi. Grace met me at his cradle as we both debated whether we should bring him out.
“No, we can't. Not right now. What if he’s in danger? It's his first time surviving the night out there,” I blocked the tablet to access his cradle, “We can't just pull him out, if it means putting his avatar in danger.”
“(Y/N), I know. But we don't know where he is, and that's even worse. As soon as we know where he is, we’ll put him right back in and we’ll go get him,” Grace argued back.
“I can't let you do that,” I fumed. She looked at me, a bit miffed but trying to understand.
Grace looked at me with concern, “I know you’re still grieving someone you love, and that Tom’s avatar is a constant reminder,” she pulled me into a hug, “I know what it feels like to lose someone you care about.”
“Three,” I say into her shoulder, “This is three times now. I miss my mom. I miss Anuk.” I raise my head to look at Grace, “I miss Tom…And Jake is not Tom.” I wipe the sad tears. “I love him so much. He was all I had left. And now he’s dead. He promised me, he promised me,” I say, just barely a whisper, my facade breaking. “I can't just forget him,” I mumbled into Grace’s shirt.
“Sweetheart,” she rubs my back trying her hardest to calm me down, as I was on the verge of tears. “We’ll wait until midnight, then we pull Jake out.”
